Moto X Update Help - X 2014 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
First post so please be gentle . I am currently on 5.1 on my 2nd gen device. For some reason I haven't received the MM update over the air. I was wondering if I really need to install a custom ROM at all? I am in the UK and my model is lpe23.32-25.3. Added a a screenshot to be slightly more helpful.

I got the update some time ago. Can you confirm it is an xt1092, and the system version?

Moto X Update
Indeed. Noob problems but I cant seem to be able to attach an image to this reply.

I can't post the screenshot either since I am a new user but yes the model is XT1092 and system version 23.16.3.victara_retgb.retgball.en.GB retde

Ok, if the system version is as you say there's a slight mismatch between GB and de at the end. Did you buy it second hand? Check in the fastboot to see if it's been unlocked (there are guides in the general forum). Have you tried to factory reset and see if the update cones through that way?

I sent it off to repair the screen and there was a issue with the device. Long story short Motorola messed up when returning the device and rather then send me the correct one they provided me with someone else's phone. I shall try the factory reset but I suspect that the bootloader has been modified leaving me with no option but to install the OTA myself? Or do I have any other option?

Hey guys,
Any chance I would be able to do this over the air? Planning on flashing the phone tomorrow and just do the installation that way

I think you need to read all the flashing guides and have a good idea of using fastboot, if you don't already.

LG 4xHD not registered

I have just managed to root my old LG P880/4xHD using advice from this forum. Thought I would try on an old phone first. One reason I tried is because I cannot update Android via the usual About phone, Software updates, Check now for updates. The Android version installed is 4.0.3. I am in Australia and it is possible the phone is an overseas model (got it from a friend in LG). Has "Not for Resale" stamped inside the back cover. When I try to update Android, I get an error message "Registered Error - Your device is not registered yet." I had hoped rooting would get around this but it hasn't. Have looked up old forum posts and there is talk of using .kdz files and all sorts of other things. Can anyone help me get around this registration issue but please be aware I am a novice and most of the older posts I read, I couldn't understand so simple explanations please. Thanks.
What you have is developer or test device and it is a bit different from normal ones. Try googling more but you will have hard time....

Could it be that it has overseas firmware, I read in a two or three year old post that this can happen but there was a way to get around this.

Its a year old phone, its not like its the nexus one or samsng galaxy s2...
Try flashing 4.12 with kdz. Google is your friend, try kdz flash 4.1.2 Optimus 4x hd.
Funny thing, when I bought my phone, only google asked me to register the phone, the usual Google Play thing. SO what do you exactly mean with REGISTER?
i think the whole phone isn't registred by LG for consumers, like dimi89 said it has to be a dev device. they aren't registred and cannot be updated/used the normal way. the serial number of this phone isn't present in the LG databases i think. Just flash kdz and everything is fine. You know that you don't get any support or warranty on that phone but you should know that.

Moto G 2nd Gen ( XT1068) hard bricked: neither turning on, nor opened by blankflash

One morning i restarted my phone( Moto G 2nd gen.) with Android Marshmallow because it went slow, but after that it restarted in fastboot mode when i pressed the power on button. Normal startup or recovery were also not working.
I checked this forum, then unlocked the bootloader and downgraded to Android 4.4.4 . My phone operated well, then at night it started asking for lollipop update again and again, i allowed for OTA update (that was my biggest mistake), and after downloading the data and during update, my phone went off and didn't start again.
Although the indicator light glows solid for sometime when connected to wall charger or to PC via USB cable.
I have tried blankflash, ADB and fastboot utility, Volume down + Power combination, pressing power button for over 120 seconds, but all in vain.....
Please suggest me a way to solve this problems, i have important data in my phone and i want to save those too.
Welcome to the hardbrick club ^^
They all did the same mistake like you did. When you go throught the motoG Threads you will see all did the same.
The only solution is a clean flash what is not given from motorola for moto g2. The only existing is for moto g what did not work for our phones
Feel blessed, you don't have to use moto g anymore.

. I wish I could say it was, but unfortunately Motorola won't release this file. There have been some serious attempts to solve this problem but none have succeeded.. As far as I know the only way to fix this problem is by getting a new motherboard..

no blankflash.zip for our model available
if you are from india then you can try out this solution for xt1068 by an guy mobile unbrick something contact him but remember it will be paid not free
Code:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WynBaVyW0oU
if you from another region then need to wait for blank flash zip
There are some methods to extract the partition layouts...one can be using dd cloning & extracting img files...another can be through B2bSupportLg Tool, also calleld BoardDiag. It does have MSM8226 chipset option, but that device is W7 G2MDS. Take a working Moto G 2014 from someone, ask them to use this tool to extract the partition schemes, then you'll get .mbn files, especially prog_emmc_filehorse_msm8226.mbn . Use that to dump into the bricked device using either QFIL Tool or use this blankflash tool, replace it's singleimage files with the one you got, then execute blank-flash.bat.
Also I had some emmc prog firehorse files, all 4 related to 8x26...You can try those & confirm me if they work or not

From what I'm seeing, the repair program you linked IS the one for the DTurbo, so I'm not sure what you're looking for. Go download it from the link you provided, and use it.
If you want more advanced repair processes, you're probably looking for RSD flashing using Motorola's RSDLite software. You'll need an RSD-compatible image to flash (you can't use a TWRP or such image). As far as I know, there is no RSD image for the latest Marshmallow release, so you'll probably have to try the older LP version and see if you can apply that. Eg, see this page for info on how to use RSD: https://www.andromods.com/unroot-lo...-moto-droid-turbo-restore-unroot-unbrick.html
The software upgrade assistant can do the full firmware, but currently only the lollipop full firmware is available. When Verizon adds the marshmallow firmware, it will do that as well. Just not available yet.

Having it as backup would be great, because I know I'll brick it sooner or later xD

See? Click that link, and it that program will automatically start downloading.
But that's not going to help you with locked bootloader to reinstall 6.0.1 until Verizon releases full firmware.
Always, always unlock your bootloader before installing any new firmware like this or you may never be able to do it. Plus, if something screws up, with an unlocked bootloader you have more options to fix it than with a locked bootloader.

This isn't the software (Windows version), here at this link?
http://www.motorola.com/VerizonSoftwareUpdateWin
The problem is you have taken the 6.0.1 OTA on a locked bootloader and Verizon has NOT yet released the full firmware version. You cannot use this tool until they do. See this quote from the Software Upgrade Assistant website?
The most recent software version (full firmware) will be available on the SUA/SRA tool within a week of a new software update. During this time, the SUA/SRA is unavailable for usage.

Obviously, it's been well over a week since 6.0.1 was released for the Droid Turbo -- but Verizon doesn't care. If they did, they wouldn't demand Motorola keep the bootloader locked in the first place! Motorola give free bootloader unlock codes for all the other Quarks (XT1250, XT1225). Only Verizon demands locked down bootloader for their variant. And then they have this OTA repair software which doesn't work unless they provide the full firmware to go along with it.
I'm sorry Verizon still controls your phone. With an unlocked bootloader we could help you. Right now you have to wait until Verizon posts the full firmware.
He can try using the repair function with the software

Interesting.. When did MM OTA started rolling out approximately?
I tried software myself and there indeed isn't option for "repair" , it simply says phone is up to date. Maybe it has to be on older ver SW or when they release firmware more options will pop out..
From this quote it seems to me that even when full firmware gets out it will only be available through SUA/SRA until somebody doen't extract it somehow.
Or VZW has place where it publishes firmwares?
I'm getting deeper with my downgrading experiment and it's just a matter of time when I'll brick phone.

He can TRY, but it won't work. Until Verizon realists releases the full firmware. I sound like a parrot, I keep repeating the same answer over and over. I'm sorry people don't like the answer.
It really depends on what exactly he did and what is wrong. Most likely he will need the full firmware, but that is exactly why I stated TRY. I appreciate that you are on here a lot answering questions, but please keep the snark down.

Read my post with the quote directly from Motorola and Verizon and I clearly explained why it will NOT work right now, and exactly when it would start working.
Also, we know exactly what he did. He has a locked bootloader with 6.0.1 and tried downgrading via ADB to Lollipop. He's screwed up his phone and he also bought a phone with a "locked Google account". Ignoring the fact the phone may be "lost" or stolen, we are still trying to help him.
He's posting in two different threads about the same thing and we've been trying to help him -- but at this point he can only wait for the full firmware:

We know exactly what he did. It's not a mystery. But besides him...
Most of these people bricking their phones on the 6.0.1 OTA are installing the OTA, then either
1) trying to install the OTA file again to "fix" something or
2) trying to downgrade back to Lollipop.
See this thread from a week ago for examples of both. I could show you even more if you wish. Like here:
babalovemaker said:
i updated twice and now holding a bricked driod turbo with bootloader locked. no back and no solution to downgrade or install yet
Click to collapse
(If they had UNLOCKED bootloaders with TWRP installed, we could help them.)
Or third cause of bricking is ...
3) trying to install OTA on an encrypted phone.
Initially, encrypted phones couldn't handle the 6.0.1 OTA. Verizon paused the 6.0.1 OTA rollout for a few days, told people with bricked phones to send them in for replacement, and then resumed the OTA rollout -- without ever confirming they fixed the issue.
For the first two points, you can't reinstall OTA update again on a locked bootloader as it's basically only a partial firmware file which looks for the previous Lollipop firmware.
You also can't downgrade from Marshmallow back to Lollipop on a Droid Turbo locked bootloader.
Even if the cause was neither of those two scenarios -- or the encryption problem, it doesn't matter. Regrettably, his phone is a brick until Verizon decides to release the full firmware. Then he and others can use the Repair Assistant or flash via RSD. That's been said time and time and time again.
Or unless some dev comes up with some magic?
This situation has been going on for for WEEKS, in various threads with several people. Maybe you haven't kept up?
I feel very sorry for him, but there's nothing we can do.
Here's what he says the reason is:

And THAT has not been released yet. OK? This has already been discussed many, many, many times over the past few weeks. New people coming in with this problem are not aware and we are having to give them the bad news.
It's Verizon's fault for not making the full firmware available.

Look, I don't know everything. I'm not a dev. But I try to help people and I have helped lots of people. I do tons of research for my answers or it's based on hard won experience.
If I don't know an answer, I'm not going to pull one out of thin air. My answers are based on facts or personal experience.
I'm the one two years ago who pointed out the XT1250 = XT1254 (same radio bands, same FCC ID)when Verizon Droid Turbo owners didn't even know about that or even wanted to admit it -- and Verizon was lying through their teeth they had a worldwide exclusive, when they didn't even have a U.S. exclusive. I proved it to all the naysayers. I knew this because of my research/knowledge of the U.S. cell phone industry.
I'm the one who found the XT1225 had LTE band 5 (which AT&T uses) and HSPA band IV (which T-mobile uses) by doing modem software scan when Motorola didn't want to initially admit it. They left those bands off the official specs for some reason. (I know why, but too long a story for here.)
If I do answer and I even post direct links to manufacturer/carrier statements (research), and then someone else comes along right behind me and says the exact opposite -- then yes I will probably point out that is not correct answer.
But I'm always glad to help.
The reason for the confusion is that the GUI of the update assistant has been redesigned and it no longer looks like the screenshots that were provided in the OP. However, it still performs the same functions as the old version.

I have an eva-L09 with C900B190 and have country "demo" ??
I read a lot of posts how to get from the C900B190 to a Rom that has ota updates.
Before I start and because I am a bit of a noob I want to be absolutely sure I get all steps correct...please help me out and confirm/correct this
1) set develloper usb debugging
2) make sure phone connects to pc
3) install latest twrp
4) unlock boot loader with tool (https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/huawei-p9-eva-l09-eva-l19-eva-l29-tool-t3591358)
5) make note of unlock code
6) use twrp to flash B136 (still have to find zip)
do I get ota to android 7 or I have to flash latest Rom meself (what is the best version for eva-L09?)
After that can I lock the boot loader and stay on android 7 or will the phone reset with locking and revert to android 6 again?
Thanks for helping

Seems I have no warranty (I got the phone from a friend and have no papers or anything) and have to pay for service centre. So I will try unlocking myself...
If anyone can help me out with all the steps in the right order I would be very grateful.

Phone is laggy since the OTA update to 9.0

Every since accepting and updating my Moto G6 (US Retail) to 9.0 (PPS29.118-11-1), it has been laggy. The lags seem to happen mostly when there is some type of I/O operation (like opening an app), or when a background app is doing something on the network - email getting delivered, etc. I've rebooted to recovery, and wiped the cache, but now I am considering doing a factory reset. Anyone else experiencing this? Anyone got any ideas that don't involve me reloading all my apps and data?
Thanks in advance.
-Chris
yeah, i'm also getting some lagginess. it's mostly when i unlock my phone using the fingerprint reader. the transition takes a super long time. i feel it's mostly the animation that's causing the ton of lag. initially after i updated to 9, opening and closing apps would take forever as well. but changing the animation with nova launcher made it a bit snappier; although it's still slower than 8.
No lag here
You guys might want to do a clean firmware install, I don't have any lag on this version I didn't take the OTA just flashed the firmware.
I think I may have resolved at least some of the issue. First, I use a SD card to hold some pictures, and videos, and other data (no apps). I reformated the card from android, and this resolved about 80% of my lag issues. Not sure if there is some kind of disk polling that is done, but with the clean format on the SD card, things most run smoothly now. The other area I'm still seeing a little lag is when scrolling over something in apps like google news where it is trying to pull a video or large image file and there seems to be some delay in the network. At this point, I think the issue is in my wifi network, not my phone (although I'm still no ruling it out). But at least it is better.

Dead on. While I was able to make my G6 better, it was still laggy at times. Yesterday, I bite the bullet, backed up my data, and did a clean flash of the current firmware. Now the phone is smooth as glass. Good call.
Thanks,
-Chris
Noticed the same thing. Reflashed for some other reason and instantly saw the lag that had been getting more and more noticeable disapear.
What do you mean by 'reflashing'? Is that the same as 'restore to factory settings?'
I've read a thread on the Motorola forum where users have done that, with no noticeable results.

No, I literally reflashed the ROM.
I downloaded the current official ROM from here:
https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/moto/ali/official/RETUS/
(note the link is for the US Retail channel distribution, if your phone is not RETUS channel, find the matching ROM for the channel your phone is.)
Once downloaded, I used the RSD lite app to flash the phone.
http://download.canadiancontent.net/RSDLite.html
You can google exact directions to use the tool, but basically, you reboot your phone to the bootloader, start RSD Lite, connect the USB cable (I had to use the factory cable on a USB 2.0 port to make this work), select the ROM file, and press Start.
Note: This will wipe your phone! So make a backup of your data.
I'm not familiar with flashing ROMs etc. And I don't want to mess up my phone any further.
Despite the fact that Motorola insist that there is no problem, I'm hoping their forum will convince them that there is.
Thanks for the help, but I'll keep it as it is. Meanwhile I'll be looking around for a dependable Android One phone.
I found one thing that helped:
Go in to 'Settings', 'system', 'Motorola privacy'' and uncheck both the slides in the menu. And I disabled the Google feed on my start screen (Swipe access).
The restart your phone.
The phone is a lot less laggy after that.
update! the August security patch update kind of helped with the lock screen lag I was experiencing.

Just did a check on my phone, and there is an update on the RETUS channel.
PPS29.118-15-11 / Security patch level: August 1,2019
A few questions about this. Through pure dumb luck, I didn't accept the Pie update, and have turned off automatic system updates in the Developer's options. It gives me a notice of new firmware a few times a day, which I decline, but so far has not updated without my consent. I realize it may do that at any moment regardless of the Developers setting.
So I'm still on Android 8, and would be delighted to stay there. But, if I'm forced to go to 9, would I be able to flash 8 again using the files here? Would that accomplish anything, or would it still insist on going to 9 after I had flashed 8?
The earlier reference to the "current official" rom - does that mean the latest 9 rom?
Why would installing the same v9 rom over again produce any different result from the OTA update to that rom?
Is there any way to turn off the firmware update notices? I've tried lots of things, but they still come.
Just trying to figure out what my options are, and what I should do. There's a 42-page thread on the Lenovo forum about this problem, with no indication that Lenovo/Motorola will lift a finger to fix it, apparently being content to see some unknown number (perhaps all) of the G6's ruined by the update to 9. I called Moto CS, and they blamed Google for the problem. Obviously, I bought the wrong brand of phone. Actually, it's my first smart phone. It seems beginners luck is a myth. At least I know better than to buy a Lenovo computer when Windows 7 becomes dangerous in January.
Anyway, I would appreciate any comments on the G6 thing.
Hello, is it required to have unlocked bootloader when doing re-flashing the official rom?

JimmiH on the Lenovo forum has found "Lenovo Moto Smart Assistant", a new utility from Motorola, which is installed on your PC (Win 7 or 10). Included in the utility is a "rescue" function which appears to do the same thing as RSD Lite - resurrect a phone from any software issues. It downloads the correct official rom and reflashes it to the phone. JimmiH will be reporting back over the next few weeks as to whether the rescue has permanently solved his Pie lagginess issues.
The advantage of this LMSA over RSD Lite is that it runs on Windows 10, and presumably works with USB3 ports, while apparently neither was the case with RSD Lite. And of course you don't have to go hunting for the right rom.

My understanding is that this utility does not require unlocking, and it does not root the phone.
Hello, I tried LMSA for flashing, but it says not supported device, I have model XT1925-4.

RSDLite will work on Windows 10, I have been using it, even on the newest Windows 10 version 1909. It will not work on usb 3 ports though. If you have any USB 2 ports available, plug the cable into one of those and it will work.

Hm I have just USB 3 on my PC, ok will try on some older one.
But is it required to unlock bootloader, when using RSD Lite?
Thanks.

No. RSDLite doesn't require unlocked bootloader.

Count me among those watching this thread, in particular looking for evidence that LMSA (or RSD Lite) actually eliminates the lag problem for more than a few days. My phone is a bone stock model XT1925-6 running Android 9, PPSS29.118-15-11-2. Lag improved after the October update but returned in about a week.
I appreciate the efforts of this group in trying to resolve this problem.
My sister-in-law recently switched to TMo and ended up with a "free" G7 Power running Android 9. It's very smooth with no lag at all, so Moto apparently knows how to resolve this problem, they're just not helping us with the G6.
