have to return rented ipad to school and considering buying this- but have questions

Hey Guys! so heres my situation: my high school wanted to go digital so added wifi to the entire school and made us all rent ipads from them (private school). I graduate next month and will have to give my ipad back. There is supposed to be an option to be able to buy it, but I have always been an android and open source person who liked to tinker so I am looking to get a new tablet. This tablet was on Amazon for $367 for a little while, but is back up to $400. My 18th birthday is next month and should get more than enough money to buy this tablet and accessories. I want to know if there are any major issues hardware, software, or something slowing down development since I most likely will root it. I am going to college next year and am considering the much cheaper older models with the keyboard dock since people keep complaining about issues with this versions keyboard dock. anyone want to clarify on that? I do have a wireless full sized keyboard that folds in half from my ipad will work, but the USB 3 and extra battery and potential to not need a case is tempting. The other thing is if I root and run the 4.4 rom builds (Am I correct it is only 4.3 that is officially supported, and boot loader unlocking tool is officially available from Asus?) will the official accesories still work without issue? I am considering buying this adapter and a micro HDMI to HDMI cable or this miracast dongle to access my movies on my 2TB seagate external hard drive (with its own power source) to watch movies instead of using an xbox 360 or my laptop around home and when I travel (which is at least once a month). I am also thinking of connecting a ps3 controlled with sixaxis app then to a TV for a more portable console for gaming. I have already done this with my LG Optimus G. Also how far along is development? I see hardly any roms. two CM11 rom and a few 4.3 roms but seems only one is heavily customized. I have experience with adding some tweaks, themes, debloating, and compiling (official) nightlies of CM for other devices and was wondering if there is enough for me to be satisfied with a hopefully not overly customized official 4.3 build and might be able to take my knowledge to help contribute to the community if I buy this. if anyone can answer a single question of this long post it would be awesome.

If you like the functionality of this tablet + dock it would be a grave mistake to buy the older versions of the Transformer series. I have owned the 700 for more than a year now and flashed most CM based roms as well as all CROMi based roms to it. The improvement compared to stock is amazing, but none of the best custom roms are as good as the TF701 on stock. The TF701 is gorgeous out of the box and that is also the reason you probably won't see the level of development the TF700 received.
Why?
Because there is way less user demand. This tablet is so good on stock, that only the serious flashoholics crave a custom rom.
The CM based KK roms all have minor issues with implementing the full functionality of the keyboard. It's only special function keys like wifi toggle, trackpad, auto brightness etc that don't work (and maybe never will) and at this point there seems to be an issue with the USB 3.0 functionality of the USB port, but if those are important to you, just flash CROMi-X 6.1 which is based on the official Asus firmware where everything works.
That is my preferred rom for this tablet. It's based on the latest 4.3 JB and it beats me why people HAVE TO HAVE the KitKat rom - I don't see much of an improvement in 4.4 compared to 4.3....
Can't help you with Miracast and the other game stuff - I don't use any of it.
The dock can be an issue. My second one works fine, but it's still something you have to pay attention to and possibly exchange/replace if the known issues show up. I have read about one user now receiving a 2014 keyborad without issues. So there is the chance that they finally fixed the disaster the dock has been in 2013. But I would be watching this...

If you like to tinker I think you'll like this device. As Bernd says it is very good out of the box and my CROMi-X build is what I run as a daily. I'm more than satisfied and my keyboard works fine. I love it.
You could join the CROMBi-kk team if you want to learn more about building a solid rom. I'm on holiday at the moment (typing this in a coffee shop in Japan) but when I get back there will be more improvements made to kitkat as well as the kernels we are using

Okay. So if I get enough money for my bday then I'll get this. Considering the dock price, issues, and I need some stuff for my raspberry pi, I'll get the tablet now and get the dock later. But other than that this tablet has everything I need, and appears to be the best hardware out there and has an even better price comparatively. I'll be watching for the docks too.

Okay. So I can have stability and features when I want it, and have a lot of tinkering when to also. That's exactly what I need. Nandroid and tinker on weekends, stable when I have classes. And if I get it I'll definitely join. Maybe I can join now though and start learning more. And until I get the tablet (maybe next week) I can use what I learn on my og Evo 4g, LG Optimus G, and nook tablet. I'll message you later most likely, but the main things I believe I need to move forward are the updates script and such and how to fix syntax errors so I don't need dsixdas kitchen to recompile everytime I make make a change even if it's just updated gapps, new ringtone, etc. the other thing I really want to figure out is how to setup aroma installer which I believe ties into the other thing. Them learn java with the coursera class I put my name down for and I could start to do a lot. Thanks for the help guys! This pretty much answers everything I need except for one thing. The ps3 controller I'm sure will work, but with the miracast dongle I'm not sure if I would be able to use midi direct straight to the dongle, and connect to local wifi in case I want to stream or play online games like clash of clans or war of nations (seriously check out the second one, it's new to android but amazing on ios). If that works and doesn't have miracast/DLNA bugs like some devices then I'll have everything I need or want. If not I can get a 15 ft micro hdmi to hdmi cable for like $10 on amazon (I have prime)

Doesnt look pretty if you plan on rooting which is a must if you want to actually use it. Get some depth of knowledge. Seems people cant repair it in some places without paying a lot of money especially after the warranty is voided. They need to offer better service in that area. I guess if you want to void your warranty and root it. Dont buy an extended one. That would not make sense. Correct me if Im wrong. Aside from shipping costs ASUS should be giving lifetime warranties only because they cut and past peoples software which is fine. Just give us what we're owed. :cyclops: LOL i dont know.

What do you mean doesn't look pretty if I root it? Rooting doesn't affect how it looks. Unless you mean if you damage it and can't get it fixed because of warranty? And my trick is if it's damaged enough I need it fixed I plug it into my laptop and hard brick it's I'm on my 5th Optimus G already and only paid $150 once. Only once was a shattering screen,

I think what I mean is I have a desktop PC or a laptop. I can have root. I do not need to void my warranty. Why would they need to void the warranty for root access?

Because you have to unlock the bootloader to get root on the TF701.
@evodev I think you would make a great addition to the team. Get the tablet!

Sorry, I literally wrote every reply right before the bell for my next class rang so I had to be quicked. Interestingly enough clash of clans and some tech sites and all are blocked, but xda I can access without having to use my phone for a hotspot connected to my 22,000 mAh battery. And I'll know be the end of next week if I'm getting it or not, I'm going to see if there might be a price drop in the near future to save some money though.

If you're saying what I think you're saying, that won't work with the TF701T as when you unlock it (which is needed for rooting), it "phones home" to the Asus server to tell them that you've done it, which instantly voids your warranty. It doesn't matter how much your hard brick it after that - they just look at the serial/IMEI number and compare it to their list of unlocked devices, and won't touch it.

Dang it. I need to do more research. Someone needs to make a modified version of the program that blocks that. Or if it doesn't require downloading the files during the process and can be unlocked offline, just create a firewall blocking all the addresses or disable wifi. Problem solved. Lol. I might look into it more when I get the tablet.

I don't believe its possible. Unlocking requires a unique per-device key, and there's no way to get that other than from Asus, so it cannot be done offline and without Asus knowing, at least not unless there's a flaw in their encryption etc.

So firewall definitely won't work. And anything to get it working I don't think anyone will bother doing. Not worth the time. Just have to be as careful as I usually am for now. Might not even root it off the bat and see how stock suites me until I want to add a ps3 controller to it.

No way around it I'm afraid. You can only unlock using the Asus unlock tool due to the encrypted keys they use.
However I'm pretty sure a ps3 controller works without root.

Just to give you guys an update I'll have the tablet tomorrow and the case on Saturday.

Living without Xposed...

Hi. I'm thinking of getting a Nexus 6. One thing I'm curious is how are people coping with not have Xposed modules. Are you depending on custom roms and themes to make up the difference? Currently on my Note Edge I use App Settings, Heads Up Notifications, Multiwindow plus. Notifly Clean, Swipeback and YouTube Adaway among others. For example App Settings really comes in handy for changing look of apps and such (can give more of a tablet UI). I'd especially like to hear from folks that heavily used Xposed in the past to get their impressions. Anyways, I might get a N6 or wait a bit more to see what comes out at CES. Thanks!

I have adaway on my Nexus 6 and it works great. It's part of the LS ROM. The Nexus 6 is fine without xposed even after using it heavily on all of my other phones. If you want a tablet UI then you can change the DPI on your phone to 320 (560 is stock) and most people seen to like 460-480dpi. It's well worth the upgrade if you love to flash. Anything from CES (LG, ASUS, Samsung etc..) Won't have nearly as much development if any compared to a Nexus device. I like to flash ROM's and kernels so rather than deal with the hassle of unbricking a LG or Samsung with factory tools I can flash the stock ROM via fastbokt with my nexus easily. It's all up to what you plan to use the phone for. Any new phone debuting this year won't have xposed anyway because they will have lollipop

Your problem is not the Nexus 6, your problem is with Lollipop. Due time, Xposed will be made to work with ART.
Regardless of whatever phone you're using, if it has Lollipop, Xposed will not work.

Thanks for your replys. I was wondering if folks could change dpi on apps individually instead of globally.
Clearly lollipop is inevitable. I've tried a recently released developers version of lollipop on my former dd (Note 3) and it has some nice features plus some Note 4 multiwindow improvements. But I also missed my Xposed mods when using it. The main problem I'm having with the EDGE is that I'm not sure how much development will continune on it. Currently there are two very nice roms (I'm refering to tmobile here variant) but no custom kernels. So I guess I'm suffering from developer envy lol... CES should be interesting in that more devices should be introduced with 64 bit processors along with, perhaps some of the larger screen sony devices. At lest that is the hope!

What is it you are wanting? We have cleanrom and a few other debated options and an available framework to let you customize the crazy outta your touchwiz. As far as AOSP or CM, give it time. It's a new device, a lot of hands are on it and after some time, more options will be available. When I bought my G2 on release day, it was a month before root and another before good rom options showed up and even longer before stable rom options we're brought to the table.

I don't understand why people buy a phone like this an expect a ton of development on it. Everyone knows AT&T locks bootloaders so there will be no AOSP ROMS for this device, especially with it packing an exynos processor. The root exploit has been patched in 5.1.1 so don't expect root unless you plan on tripping KNOX or never upgrading again. People really need to do research before they go out and buy a phone. If you need that much development, buy a nexus.

Exactly. I knew this going into getting another ATT phone (Active). It was either getting a phone I knew would work out of the box or getting a toaster oven with an 810 SOC. HTC and LG both failed this year IMHO and OPO2 will also be throttling back the 810 2.1 SOC. I wanted the active because of the bigger battery, but if those wanted ROMs on a S6 they should have just bought an international model outright.

I bought this phone expecting no development. The fact there's even root and roms for it is more than enough for me.

I went from a Nexus 5 (chronic flasher) to a no root Note 4 (now obviously s6) and I discovered that not having root or a million roms to flash caused almost zero issues. Having root and debloated roms on the s6 makes me completely happy. I just flashed XtraStoLite and it's awesome, even more customization and you choose only Samsung apps you want.

I haven't even rooted yet. Works fine for me. First phone I didn't root right away.

Yeah, the issues that made me feel like I absolutely had to root in the S4, S5, N4 are pretty much non issues with the S6 so I'm happy not rooting.

Probably the built in themer.
For everyone: when you buy a phone with a locked bootloader, you buy a phone that will have very limited development support (if a hack is found all the better, but don't count on one being found, they ain't easy to find). If you buy a Lamborghini are you going to complain you can't put the turbo you saw on your friends Mazda on it?

Alliance Framework and soon 3minit. You just need to flash a deodex ROM and to top it off, we are now seeing that you can flash roms from the international thread. I will attempt this myself 4th of July weekend and post videos on my channel if successful.

Honestly I think it's quickly getting to the point where rooting will be an afterthought. I rooted my S6 Edge and flashed back to stock within a week.

It's not hard, most are just an Aroma installer. I'm running one and it works great. The only weird thing was the Aroma installer screen flashes while you're selecting options you want to add/remove. I have an ATT S6 as well.

So I can Flash the deodexed ROM linked earlier with Flashfire then add the alliance framework with flashfire too? Still Kinda new to this(Had the s4 rooted and never flashed anything till after getting the s5 which was rooted with a custom ROM) and it seems like its a different method every phone. Im trying to read up on the different threads but dont have much time usually. Need to take a day and figure it out. Thanks for the help.

What I'd like is to see something like Xposed,,which works without issue on a completely stock+root install.
I've been doing this since the G1 days, and i just dont have the time or patience for it anymore. I have a hobby that to me, is far more satisfying and fun than jacking around with phones.
All i really want is to remove the volume warning and the redundant wifi notification.

Xposed is in alpha or pre alpha for TW devices. So it is in the works, just a ton of bugs and the install is pretty in depth at the moment.

Don't know about the volume warning, but the WiFi notification is easy if rooted. Get the CSC editor and search for WiFi. Blank this value and reboot.

I have up on roms (TW or AOSP/CM) based a long time ago due to glitches and bugs. The last thing I ever did with root was adaway but now many all developers and websites are getting content past adaway and ABP, so no point there even.
I had a problem with my Tab S not taking the lollipop update after rooting then un-rooting which kind of soured me it in general. I got it flashed back to stock at bestbuy and updated, but settings menu still shows status as Custom even though download mode shows Knox 0x0

How is the state of the OnePlus 3T right now?

Hello, I've been an Android user from a while and decided to upgrade from my Nexus 5 to the OnePlus 3T. The only thing I'm concerned is not having the Google Android version since I'm very fond of how good it is, but in October 31st, Nexus 5 will be 4 years older and although Google isn't still talking of stop working on the software side of it it is probably going to happen eventually.
With all that said, I'm trying to learn beforehand (my phone arrives in 10 days) if are there any lag problems, if people are using any specific ROMs that work better with it and anything that could be quality of life improvements that I could do once it arrives.

The Nexus 5 is already discontinued when it comes to official software updates. It will only get security patches and even that won't be for long. (In fact it's latest factory image is from December 2016 so it might've fully stopped already.)
As for the Oneplus 3T, it's currently running the latest 7.1.1, latest security patch and the Oneplus skin (OxygenOS) is basically stock Android on steroids. I'm running the fully stock beta 4 version and the phone is extremely fast and smooth, battery is great. It's good to the point where I haven't even felt the need to unlock the bootloader and root yet. You definitely won't be disappointed in your purchase.

I recently (last week) replaced my 2 year old Nexus 6 with a OnePlus 3T and had the same concerns as you. Would I enjoy another OEM's version of Android? I was even running a really bare bones Vanilla AOSP ROM by the end and loved it.
I don't regret changing at all thus far.

I've been looking around a little, but not many of the available ROMs seems worth it (I don't want CM, Lineage or anything pre-rooted).

Ah, that's so good to hear! This is exactly what I was expecting. Yeah, Nexus 5 had an extremely good run and until the beginning of this year I felt it was still so good as far apps go, but anything web related started being more and more painful. It is still a pretty good phone and I'll keep around for Android dev related things.
Now I'm pumped for the 13th.

So you did modify your phone? Or am I getting it wrong? If not, why is that?

OOS is as close as you can get (factory OS) to "pure" Android unless you buy a Nexus or Pixel (and the latter will of course cost you). Many are calling the OP3T a spiritual successor of the Nexus series.
There are just a few OnePlus versions of apps (music player, file manager, weather) that many folks will find useless (you probably have your preferred options). And a OnePlus launcher.
But beyond that, there are a few modifications many will see as value added: The OnePlus camera app is really nice (great options in Manual mode). There are lots of settings which let you tweak and customize in (my opinion) really useful ways.

I flash Franco Kernel because I have great experiences with it from my Nexus 6. Ran without for a few days, but realised I missed it...
I install Magisk because I want root and for a few nice systemless modifications. Currently: changing screen density, debloating system apps and Viper4Android.

I see. I never used a launcher (except the Google Now, not sure if that is even considered a launcher itself, and hopefully it is a feature in every Android phone, not just Google ones), ideally, I think I would want to get rid of that, if possible. The File Manager might be helpful, although I use one I like, perhaps theirs is a good one. No biggie, though.

Google Now is a launcher (AKA home app). It's not pre-installed, but you can easily install it from the Play Store.
I don't think you can disable or uninstall the OnePlus launcher on a stock OP3T ("disable" is grayed out), but you certainly can with root (may want to freeze it before uninstalling, and make sure it doesn't break anything else). But I also doubt it would make any significant difference, compared to simply installing Google Now launcher, and making it the default home app.

Haven't used it much, it does the basic functions (move/copy files, looks like it can open archives like ZIP) but doesn't look like anything special. If you use one that has more features (particularly root browsing) you'll probably prefer what you already use.

Donating N5 to my Dad. Keep on stock Marshmallow or upgrade to Oreo?

As said in the title, I'm giving my N5 to my father. Is it best to flash stock Marshmallow or try something a little speedier and secure but not as stable? What are your thoughts?

if you want to do a little work before you give it to him, this is my suggestion. this is what i did for a long time, before i started really messing with my N5. (instructions for clarification, you probably already know how this stuff works.)
TL;DR: flash stock M -> root -> remove junk [-> unroot]
ive never actually unrooted so i dont know the process, but if you feel its a good idea...
INSTRUCTIONS:
- download and flash stock Android M from the google stock ROM collection. (hammerhead).
- wait until it reaches Startup Wizard and then reboot into bootloader.
- flash TWRP recovery.
- reboot into bootloader again.
- from recovery, flash SuperSU to gain root.
- reboot into system.
- after setting up the phone, disable first and then remove (titanium backup is my choice) any unnecessary app.
note: make sure the app is disabled. sometimes after you hit the disable button it just uninstalls updates without actually disabling it. the app will say Disabled in the app list.
note: you can filter installed apps in titanium backup by Frozen status so the disabled ones are easier to find.
- reboot.
- if youd like, here you could unroot.
- reboot and enjoy.
REMINDER:
removing certain apps can prevent basic functionality from working properly. trial by fire, i know for a fact that the system cannot run without the Google app installed. Google Play Services is another necessary one.
i feel marshmallow was a fantastic generation of android. i was always learning new things i could do. also, as a human with a father i feel he would benefit more from stability than from extra performance or features.

Two years ago I bought a OnePlus 3T, and I have been using a Pixel 2 for a year now. I wish Google released an improved Nexus 5. There are no good small phones anymore.

How does the Pixel 2 compare with the nexus 5?
I'm using lineageos 14.1 with MicroG, Xprivacylua, and AFWall on my N5 (no Google apps) and would probably do the same with a new phone.

Is he going to be using it as his main cell phone? If you need stability the best bet is likely LineageOS 14.1
Personally, I'm on darkrom 7.1.2 (& elementalx 8.14 kernel) for more than a year now as I need a stable phone but LOS is more up-to-date.

Actually the OP3T is wonderful. The only reason I got a Pixel is because my wife's N5 died, so I gave her the OP3T and then I bought myself a Pixel 2. Like most of us, I'm the unofficial smartphone dealer in the family...
The Pixel 2 is great. The camera is unrivaled and stock Android is lightning fast as always. That said, I wish it was the same size as the N5. No current smartphone can match the ergonomics of the late N5. If I were Google, I'd release the N5 with the same exact dimensions, OLED screen, current camera tech, bigger battery, and stereo speakers. I'd buy the **** out of that phone.
