i keep getting spam calls from the same number recently, and I went online to my verizon account to block the number. however, when I tried to apply it, I got an error message saying that I could not block it. interestingly, the system applied the block to my wife's iPhone.
is there an alternative way to block calls aside from a 3rd party app?
thanks!

Some ROMs have that feature built in -- like CM. That's not "3rd party app".
Call Blocking in CyanogenMod

Other than that, I use RCB blocker, but I'm rooted and it's a 3rd party app.
Root Call Blocker Pro

if it was a landline number you could use this service:
https://nomorobo.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205761775-What-Phone-Carriers-Are-Supported-
But it doesn't work with cell phones.
finally got it figured out. had to have a chat with VZW and they had to enable "blocking calls and messages" feature on my account. i couldn't do it myself online, only on their end.
What I've done is create a contact called Block, tick the box to send to voicemail, and then set ringtone to none. You can add more than one number to this contact. Naturally this only works for numbers that you can save.
I use this. Works great. Xposed.

go to youmail.com sign up they have an option to block unknown calls
head up to trapcall.com and sign up for the flytrap service. It's free and will allow you to bounce unknown numbers, give you their actual caller ID and then if you so choose you can go online to blacklist them from ever calling again. They will hear a "the number you have dialed is no longer in service" message.
works like a charm, and free is always cool. They offer more features but with an additional monthly fee.
Thanks for the tip on trapcall, it's a great service. I was actually looking for something to forward unknown calls to my voicemail so I never have to deal with them. Does anyone know of an app that can do this?

Call and SMS blocker.
I don't know if the applications are supported anymore. Someone was looking for them a few weeks ago and I saved the attachments in case I'd ever want them.
Let me know if they still work?

I've been looking everywhere for callblocker. I am about to test it out now, thank you so much. I'll let you know if it works out.
Well after installing the app I realize that the unknown block feature isn't exactly what I was looking for. In the about dialog it explains that it will block anyone that isn't in your contacts list. While that will cover restricted calls, it will also block people calling from random phone numbers. I just want to forward restricted calls to voicemail or drop them altogether. Anyway thanks again for the post, this has put my mind to ease now that I know what that app was all about. I wonder how hard it would be to code an app that forwarded restricted calls to the voicemail. Seems like it should be fairly simple.

Trapcall works great but the only thing I didn't really like was there voicemail service I use PF voicemail and you cant use them both
I install tCallblocking app this morning and haven't had an unknown caller all day.
youmail
I second youmail. It blows phonefusion away and is much more customizable. And no annoying text message. The only thing is it doesn't really block them from calling but it stops them from being able to leave a msg, gives them a greeting you choose, such as the number has been disconnected or doesn't accept calls etc. Totally the best vmail app around.
I found an app to block restricted calls, actually sends them to voicemail but that is exactly what I wanted with trapcall. It's called tcallblocking, search for it in the market if you are interested.
Just saw previous post about tcallblocking, so basically what I'm saying is, this app rocks.
Patrick
Edit: It seems like I need to read the original post thoroughly. Sorry for polluting this thread!
Can I use the Caller Blocking Application on this website for the G1?

Damn, would be nice if I could get the source for them, would really like to look into them.
tCallBlock on JAChero 2.7.3
Have had this installed for a couple of days now and works great. Will notify you of missed call from unknown but phone never rings. Also forwards straight to voicemail. I'm happy with it! No more UNKNOWN calls for me. Hope this helps.
Block unknown callers straight to voicemail
Hello everyone, the app is call tcall blocking lite is on the android market
enjoy it!!!!!
Youmail and Unknown Contact
Youmail works best for this. And its best VM app out there. I just set this option and should know in few days if actually works. Not sure how to test it out since I dont have a land line to do *67 from. Tested from phone of friend...he did *67 and it says Unknown but still phone rings and have to drag up to decline it before they hear "This person does not accept blocked calls...blah blah blah". So after adding the unknown contact from gmail contacts and letting it sync, I set to block call. So now it does not ring at all
I know this has probably been answered a billion times already, but I can't get the voicemail to go away on aospCMod. I already flashed Google Voice and changed the voicemail number to my own, but the notification still pops up every 3-5 minutes. How do I go about getting rid of it?
You mean you don't want a voicemail at all?
No. I still want voice mail, I just don't want the ghost voice mail notification popping up
Ah, the old phantom texts. Haven't seen that in years. I can't give you a direct link since I'm using the app, but search for the SMS Char Limit thread. It has a solution there. Or you can get a program to block those texts; which at the moment the name escapes me.
And that's really odd for you to still receive those if Google is taking your voice mails.
Super Private Conversation (SPC) from the market. Block the text number in the program and you still get the texts, so VVM still works, but you don't get notifications and your message box doesn't fill up with them.
Try that and see if it works.
Well no, it's not the 9016 texts. Have them blocked with handcent. I mean the ones where if you're on a non sense rom you get a vm notification. It says to call *86 to get the voicemail. But if you do it says it's an invalid number or something. I read somewhere that if you change the number to your own number it fixes...which it didn't.
Nevermind. Found a fix. Since I have Gingerbread there is an option to turn off voicemail notifications. Can't believe I didn't see that.
Where is this option at ? Mine always says I have 8 voicemails, and drives me insane !
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I think it's only on aospCMod, but you go into Settings>Call settings and scroll down and turn off voicemail notifications. I use Google Voice which gives notifications from the app itself, not from the phone app, so they stop
I was previously using ESET Mobile Security to block incoming calls and texts from a certain number. However, I've given up on that program, at least temporarily and have moved on to LBE Privacy Security. The only problem with LEB is that it doesn't cover call privacy in the same manner ESET did. Thus I'm not in need of another app to perform this task. CM7 can divert calls to voicemail but it doesn't appear to be able to block messages. Can anyone recommend an app to me?
I would recommend you to block sms and calls KasperskyMobile Security, CallMaster, Root Call Blocker. I'm sure that there are other programs for this.
i haven't tried any in particular but there are a few call & sms blockers in the market.
you could search for call blockers or even blacklist.
Try avast antivirus. Works best on rooted phones, has call and SMS blocker with theft protection, lockdown and SMS alert to two numbers.

How do you block a contact?
I have a contact named "Junk" to which I add all garbage numbers to, and set that contact to go directly to voicemail in the contact settings.
I believe in order to actually block a number you would have to go through your carrier?
I use an app called Mr. Number and it's worked perfectly for me. Been using that for about a year now actually. Has some nice little extras too besides just pure blocking.
There are lots of apps on the Play Store that do this very thing.
You cannot do this without a third party app
Hello is it possible to block incoming calls unless in my contact list. I have tried the do not disturb function and it still shows the number who called in my call log. Is there a way to block it so it just doesn't ring or go to voicemail or show in my call log. Spam calls getting annoying now thanks in advance
@Pixel5xD Sounds much like the old Call/Message block that I recall when I was using the SG3/SG4.
May need to try a 3rd party application to achieve this on Pixel, but I can't say for sure::

I know this is a few months old, but I've been using Calls Blacklist Pro and it does exactly what you're asking. I needed something like the old CM dialer that blocked anything not in my contacts list. I've tried just about everything out there and this is the only one that really works for me.

The app hasn't been updated in 2 years and spammers have found a way around it. I've found I don't get as many with the native Google dialer block but I still get some. The good thing is I now have a brand new warranty for my car that I sold 3 years ago. In the description is says you can block any number after they call. That is pointless since you will never get a repeat caller, they just move to the next number on their list. The new government protocol is useless too, they've gotten around that as well. I do wish they would have a global block like (area code)+first 3 digits of your phone number. Nonetheless, I'm down to about one or two a day from 10 previously.

I'm still using the app and I have never gotten a spam call because I block everything that isn't on my contacts list. That was the point of the thread. He was looking for something that blocked everything but the contacts.

I get that. But look at the reviews saying it doesn't work any longer. Non contact calls still getting through. They need to update the app I believe.
edit: does the native spam blocker in the dialer not work with contacts only? I do wish there was an option that spam gets a "this is not a working number" message instead of ringing silently or screening. I also think a global block like (620) - 345* would be a good thing since many calls are spoofed from my area code + my first 3 numbers.
Lastly to the OP @Pixel5xD How do you handle calls from businesses or medical offices not on your contact list? If those get blocked and don't even screen you must miss a lot of appointments.
In the Phone app, go to Settings > Spam and Call Screen > Call Screen. Enable "automatically screen" or "Silently decline" for spam, possibly faked numbers, first time callers, and private/hidden. The only calls that should come through are your contacts or numbers that have called before. When the Assistant is screening a call, remember to use the "Block/Report Spam" option on numbers you don't want to get repeat calls from.
