[Discussion][MM] Security lack or improve? - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Well something I've just noticed.. we can turn "mobile data" on/off while screen is locked.. previously that was a problem for alot of users who forgot there backup code and tried to log in to Google account but they were turned data off!!
But on the other hand I think this is a security lack.. which mean that if I locked my mobile anyone can change it without my permission!!
What you think?

Well to me, when i noticed it yesterday and was excited with because i have lost my data by doing factory reset on my S5 when i was unable to unlocked the device which was very worrisome.
It good to be able to access the data service when the device is lock same as to be able to turn on the flash light on lock screen, on can turn on/off the data service without unlocking the device, sometimes, people send me chat on Whatsapp that am not ready for, so instead of silencing the device, i just turn off the data which will prevent such notification. So to me, the merit outweigh the demerit.
My thought.

G1 got stolen, a few questions

So, unfortunately I got mugged and my G1 was stolen.
I already changed all relevant passwords and will soon contact the network and police so they can lock the phone and the card.
However, I just wanted to be sure that if I change my google account password, the G1 can no longer access my data without the new password.
Or if the G1 always has access to it despite any changes.

Within a few minutes of a password change Android will lose sync and a pop up will hit the notification bar to update the password.
Sorry to hear about that... =(
Are you getting a new one? If so, make sure this time you install a GPS tracker, there are many programs on the market. I use GPStracker by instamapper, it works really well. You need to create an account and enter the device code you get online onto your G1. From there you can text your phone and it will enable GPS, and you can view where your phone is online. Here is the site, and i am terribly sorry that happened to you!!

Thanks for all the input guys.
The thing is, first thing the thieves usually do (as they did in this case) is take out the battery on the phone.
Also, they usually also get rid of the SIM card, and insert another one, most likely of a different network, so the G1 won't have internet access.
That kinda makes those programs useless.

That's why I don't unlock my phone for another network until it's absolutely necessary. If they have to unlock it, that takes time with the correct SIM installed (and then I am able to track it).
Out of curiosity, have you tried looking on Google's Latitude?

They wont. They will disable the IMEI (if recorded) on their network but that's it.
Yeah, no chances of SIM tracking, but they can disable the IMEI on a national level, essentially making the phone useless on the country.
Well, I know I've never had to worry about being hacked with my Trackstick.
Any application you can get for tracking your phone's location will only be useful if you LOSE your phone... then you can follow it.
If you want to be able to track a STOLEN phone, you need to think along a different line....
First off, the FIRST TWO THINGS that the thief will do are... 1) change SIM, 2) FACTORY RESET. That means that anything installed on the DATA partition... is gone.
So what do you do? Obviously, you need to install something on the SYSTEM partition. Not only that, but it must not have any configurations that are stored on the data partition.
Easy and simple solution is this;
You rig up a bootup script that checks if the installed SIMCARD is yours. If it is NOT, it will send an SMS message to some phone number, i.e., your googlevoice number. You will then have the thief's phone number. For further fun, CELL SITE ID, maybe GPS coordinates within the SMS message. And periodically repeat.
Note: The phone number may or may not be traceable by itself. To catch the bastard, you need to find a HOT SOUNDING girl to seduce him over the phone and arrange to meet up with him for a "good time". You then go there and beat the snot out of him and retrieve your phone. Or even better, you go there with cops to slammer him.
That sucks, I'd be lost without my G1

Questions about G1 ... ATT... Blocked Data... Debacle!

So my friend is giving me her old G1 since she got a new phone and it is basically sitting in her glove compartment. She has T-Mobile I have AT&T.
I am on a family plan with no data plan and my parents went so far as to put a data block on all the phones. I read a few sites and I heard from one that once the phone is unlocked it is a one time deal, if this is true this may be good for me.
A) Since my friends phone is obviously unlocked since it was hers and she used it, if I put my ATT sim card in (she's not gonna factory reset), will it work? What would I have to do
Since I dont have a data plan and my parents blocked all data (internet, not messaging) but I have Wifi, can i tell my friend before she mails me her G1 to enable wifi?
B) Since I don't plan on getting wifi anytime soon, this would be good no? Ofcourse if question A is correct that I wouldn't have to unlock it and activate it.
Ba) If question A is fail, could i still activate the phone via my wifi on the gmail account set up?
So those are all the questions I have, I would like to know what I should do when i get the phone in anycase because I would really like to use it, and i plan to use the wifi feature instead of paying for a data plan since my town has a lot of free wifi hotspots!
Let me know!!!

If the phone is up to date, it should allow you to skip the account sync process (which is one reason data is required). That way it should allow you to get into the phone and activate wifi yourself.
Of course it wouldn't hurt to have you friend do it for you. Convenience and all.
you meant to say "Since I don't plan on getting data anytime soon..." right?
If she doesn't factory reset, you can add multiple accounts on a single G1 through settings. So give that a go too. The main thing is, that before donut, it was mandatory to sync over data service to activate your phone on a fresh G1. So you should be ok.
Hey Innovated,
Shouldn't have any issues doing that. If you pop in the SIM card, the phone will first say Emergency Calls Only. You have to go into Settings, Wireless Controls, Mobile Networks, then Network Operators and select AT&T.
If it pops up with an unlock code screen, then you need to purchase an unlock code. eBay is usually good, around $5.
After that, everything will work. As you don't have a data plan, and have a data block in place, there's no need to enter new APN details.
As for wifi, you can turn it on or off as you want. To turn on and off, click Settings, Wireless Controls, Enable WiFi.
Hope this helps!

Wow thank you so much for both of your fast replies! This will help so much and hopefully it is as easy as you say! I can't wait to have this cool phone!
My friend wants to know if it can still work if she can factory reset it, and add my gmail account to activate it before mailing me the phone... Would that still be the same as what she 'WAS' going to do in my first description?
As far as I know that can work. What the sync does is add your contacts, and allow the phone to sync with your google account. With 1.6 and higher, android allows you to skip the step, but it should be possible if she does it for you.
Worst comes to worse, you factory reset and hit "skip" . So yup. hope that helps.
even if im ATT and she's Tmobile?

[Q] XT890 - Data Roaming Issue

Hi Folks,
I hope you can help me with a data roaming issue I am seeing on my RAZR i. I have data roaming disabled in the options.
There seems to be a lag of some kind, where the RAZR i will not recognize a cell/operator switch while in standby/locked mode.
I can reproduce the error everytime - I have the phone locked and connected to my bluetooth handsfree in the car - it will show my home network operator. I cross the border and drive to a point where I know 100%, that I have lost home operator connectivity. The BT handsfree will show my home network operator - data will be sucked in the background, since the phone believes it is still booked in under my home country operator.
I helped myself by setting my contract to explicitly activate roaming everytime by sending an SMS message - I am getting the notification SMS everyday, that data roaming has to be enabled, and I am now trying to consume data in a foreign country....
As soon as I press the power button and wake the phone up, the network operator will immediately switch to the foreign countries operator and data roaming activity will cease...
I have tried this well over hours already as well, to leave it in standby state, to see if it will eventually recognize the operater switch, but even after 6hrs at my workplace (50km away from the border) it was still showing my home countries operator.
This has happened to me on ICS 4.0.4 as well as JB 4.1.2 - I thought the update might resolve it.
I am stock JB Retail EU, unrooted (thanks Moto) and locked BL.
Anyone else observing this or able to reproduce the fault? I have opened a ticket with Motorola but their first "repair" attempt was to flash the latest firmware again, which did of course not resolve the error....
thanks a million for your time reading this and maybe offering some insight on what might be causing the issue.
cheers, Stefan
Out of curiosity, is this your first Android phone? And also do you have data to show that other Android phones switch instantly when crossing the border?
(Not trying to be rude, just that the expectation on that behavior might not be feasible and it is not the Phone's or Motorola's fault, I have no idea at the moment)

Appreciate the quick response Omar, and no worries I don't see your question as rude. This is indeed my first Android phone, however - I think a fundamental function like Data Roaming should work immediately when the event is about to occur, since it can inccur significant cost..
When it is switched off, I expect the phone to not download data when it is on a foreign network, so I assume it would be an easy thing to "program" polling cell-information again before I start the download, no?

Need to block international roaming - I live near Canadian border
Since we do have that option to select "Home Only", see if that makes a difference. I think that might even block the phone calls too .. but try it as a first approach.

Oops, I couldn't find it ... maybe it was there on ICS? But you can also try under Network Operators try unchecking "Choose automatically".
There's an option for data roaming under Mobile Network settings, just uncheck it if it's enabled...

This is what I have unchecked from the very beginning, but the issue is, that the phone is not obeying that setting.. thus the thread...
@Omar-Avelar, I don't have my Razr currently to check your suggestion with the operater selection - Motorola had me send the phone in another time, "to fix it" - so apparently they are admitting there is an issue in the way it is behaving.. I wonder if anyone else has the issue or it is just my phone - which would mean hope in terms of an "easily repairable hardware defect"...

Hi Omar, received my phone back yesterday - tried this morning and of course it is still not working.. I will try your suggestion of disabling the automatic network selection tomorrow morning on my way to work and see if that works.
What I did notice, is that I seem to have a different baseband version, than the official specs are suggesting:
according to this site:
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=reposi...0_android_4.1.2_ota_system_upgrade_91.2.26001
the baseband is supposed to be:
SUNRISE_SMB_REV30_V2_R3_1233.C7_sec
however, my phone is showing:
SUNRISE_SMB_REV30_V2_R3_ENZO_1251.B_SEC
the name somehow smells custom made fishy to me - I am sure I never messed with this however. My girlfriends Razr i is showing the same version and I know she never ever touched it other than doing the OTA upgrade, so I wonder if there was a faulty OTA distributed at some point?
Could this be the culprit? If so, can I switch to the "correct" baseband without unlocking/rooting?
Really appreciate all your feedback and help so far.
cheers, Stefan
I'm in the UK with a retail UK firmware and the same baseband as yours.

I'm on Tescomobile (O2 provide the network) and have my data roaming off and the phone never locks onto another provider, as I understand the problem for you is when cross a country border which I don't (being an island and no borders) I'm due to go to vacation in South of France in 5 weeks and I'll check then whether my roaming switches on when I change to another provider there.
Have tried select another network (Orange) but cannot connect,
Hope I understood your problem.

yes, you got it exactly right. I have no issues within my country (Germany) either, phone stays on T-Mobile and never locks onto another network (O2, Base, etc..), it is like you said, when I switch to another countries roaming partner, the phone in standby mode still believes to be in the home network (T-Mobile).
Watch out in France then, although the issue might not be happening for you - assuming you fly in and switch off the phone. Once you reactivate the phone in the foreign country, it will be actively pulling and seeing the foreign operator I suppose.. In my case the phone switches countries in the background in standby, thus not actively searches/recognizes the change... at least this is my current theory that would match the behavior that I observe on an external hands free unit display...
Right I'll watch it when in France, might even make a working visit to Munich before then. I do know when I went to Hoogeveen in Jan I had a xperia go and that retained roaming off when on kpn.

Hi @Omar-Avelar,
I tried your suggestion this morning and disabled automatic network selection - guess what, I am observing a similar behavior.
The phone does in fact loose network connection at a point when the home network is no longer in reception, but the phone/hands free unit is NOT updated.. it keeps saying "Telekom.de" and shows 3 bars.. Even turning off the external bluetooth hands free unit and disconnecting the bluetooth link, then re.enabling the bluetooth link on the hands free, does NOT update the network operator status. You have to wake up the phone for it to realize it is disconnected from the network.... (good news obviously in the state of being disconnected from the network there is by the nature of design no possibility to retrieve data....)
My non-technical skills tell me, that the baseband is doing it's job of handling the network connections/operations properly, but when it comes to passing on the network piece to the "software/android side" this is where the disconnect is. Obviously the roaming setting is an android feature, that is not handled within the baseband, so if the phone/software doesn't know what's going on, it can't interact.
Any suggestions? fixable? did you take a look at my previous post on the baseband version?

Hi there, how did your trip to France work out? Did you run into the roaming issue?
Hi @Omar-Avelar,
I think I made some progress - I believe the culprit is the intel deep sleep mode. When I interprete the sources correctly, the RAZR i enters deep sleep mode directly when going into standby/phone is locked/screen turned-off. To prove my theory, I installed "WakeMyAndroid" ( https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gejos.android.wakemyandroidpro&hl=en ), the program is intended to prevent deep sleep mode and keep the phone in standby.. I set the timing to 9 sec and advanced invisible smart wakeup, as well as force wake if data lost - guess what, it works. Network operator switches and the phone immediately turns off data roaming.
Downturn of course is increased power consumption, since the phone never enters deep sleep. It brings me still over the day, so it is an acceptable workarround, I may play with the wake interval, too to increase usage, but I guess there should be a way to check network status in deep sleep mode, no? I am not a developer, so I don´t know what would need to be done, but shouldn´t it be able to poll network status in deep sleep every couple of seconds? Or rather a baseband function to "invisible wake" the phone when network operator changes?
Hope you or anyone else reading this, can help me. Appreciate your time.
cheers, Stefan
Hi @StefanGA do you have any tips or update on the issue?
In my country we pay data traffic by just roaming with another operator (within the same country). Because the signal of my current operator isn't always good, the roaming happen often, resulting in a lot of additional 0,01€ - 0,03€ that pile up.
Thanks
Sorry, Motorola admitted, they have no solution to the problem - I.e. No interest to invest time to research it.. I returned my RAZR i and exchanged it for a RAZR HD.

Find 'My Xperia' Utility

Hi Everyone ,
I'm new to this whole Sony Xperia thing being a new convert from the iPhone , so forgive me if this sounds a bit odd.
I've just enabled and activated the Find 'My Xperia' utility , that on the face of it is like iPhone's 'Find my phone' , the only difference and correct me if I'm wrong here , whats to stop me turning it off in the settings (assuming i have no pin on the keypad - ok so i'd deserve it if that was the case). But it also seems easy enough to reflash my 'lost' phone with a virgin stock firmware and then thats the find my xperia utility disabled , as it needs to be active on the phone as well as online. IOS stops you doing this by locking the phones repair and activation unless you unlock it with your iTunes account.?
Does this seem a bit of a half hearted effort or am i missing something?
Thanks guys.
Sixx
I can and have pushed updates to my iPhone when I was playing with that and had the phone locked. Could have been a fluke but still should have never happened. I have also flashed ios firmwares that were no longer signed without SHSH blobs including betas without being a dev.
IMHO, lock your phone and see what it does. I do not use those apps because the iPhone one was wasted on me and if my phone is not in my hands or pocket we probably have larger issues.
You may need to log in with your PSN ID to unlock the device. This would be similar to using an Apple ID to unlock the device.
My Xperia Utility
Hi there,
Thanks for the reply , I tried it out by registering and locking my handle remotely , and as I guessed reflashing with a stock ROM wiped any trace of it and I was unable to trace it.
I'm assuming it's this way as the handset does not need to talk to an authentication server like the iPhone's do prior to activation.
Was interesting to do though.... Bored now.
Sixx
Yeah, My Xperia and similar solutions are useful, but if a determined and/or technically clued up person steals your device then you almost certainly aren't going to be able to retrieve it that way. They're more of a deterrent to the opportunistic thief than anything.
I have Cerberus and have it set to email me images via the front camera on incorrect unlock attempts. My phone also automatically switches over to a secure lockscreen when away from my home wifi. The power menu also don't display in the lockscreen, so makes it difficult for someone not in the know to power off my phone.
If my phone goes missing for more than an hour and I receive any notification of incorrect unlock attempts, then it's being wiped remotely and a message to call my other line is displayed to return the device. If that fails, then a phone call to my provider to get the phone totally blocked is the next step.

Help with Verification Failed on Note 9

Hi everyone! First I just want to say thanks to anyone who has any information to help me.
I have a Note 9 and I enabled the directional lock (to unlock the phone). My phone is also encrypted so it will prompt me to enter the the directional lock anytime the phone is turned on and then again to unlock the screen. I turned my phone off the other day. When I turned it back on I saw the screen prompt for a directional lock. My friend needed help with something so I ended up talking to her before I even tried to unlock it (big mistake). When I got back in my truck to use my phone the screen was black and the message appeared, "Verification Failed, Unable to restart your device. The integrity verification has failed. You need to reset your device to factory default settings. This will erase all your data. I am not sure if while I was talking I accidentally touched the screen causing this message.
The biggest problem is I do not have a backup of certain files. They are on the internal memory of my device. So I DO NOT want to do a factory data reset. I just want to know a solution to get back into my phone again.
Here are the things I have tried:
-Soft reset with Power and volume key
-Wiping cache partition
-Calling Samsung
-Calling T-Mobile
-Downloading Samsung Switch (Does not Recognize device)
-All options in recovery mode (except factory data reset)
-Download mode
My phone is not rooted but it did go through a series of OTA updates and now is running Android Pie. I have came across a few other people with this issue and it happened after updating.
I want to know if there is a way to get in the phone or is there a way to recover my encrypted data and then decrypt it. I also would like to know if I can have the steps to use Odin (already downloaded on my computer) to reinstall the current firmware on the phone. I am wondering if anyone has ever done this and still kept their data (pictures, videos, memos, documents and text messages). I have only flashed my device probably about 10 years ago. So step by step directions would be amazing. Also I do have developer options enabled.
I have searched the forum and the only advice I have seen is to reset but I want to know how to keep my data. The only thing I have came across is a store that has a "Samsung" machine that will do a Home Restore without losing your data. He told me if something is corrupted that I could still lose my data. I have over 100gbs of data I need to access and it would be horrible to lose it.
Finally I have one last question is to back up all my encrypted data so that if I find a way to decrypt it later?
PLEASE any advice besides the things I have already tried would be so helpful. If anyone is able to help me I PROMISE I will help you with whatever you are trying to do and believe me.... I have the resources to do so. It will be a way I will show my thanks.

u can try with odin and flash latest firmware but it will not remove encryption. none the less it might at least get you access to the unlock screen and allow you to unlock but it might not.
read up about odin and get latest version.
read up on stockfirmware and your phone model and which carrier CSC code you are on and get latest version. via samfirm tool or frija or sites like sammobile
flash it in odin by filling the different .md5 files to the according slots. but for CSC slot use home_csc.md5 to not wipe data.
but what i dont understand is what does the landscape/portrait have anything to do with this?

Thank you so much for the response!! My Phone is from T-mobile ]. I have been reading up on it and I did download Odin but I am unsure of how to exactly use it. I could figure it out with directions but I am afraid to do the wrong thing because I have only done it one and that was with Samsung Kies ( a long time ago.)
I am unsure what you mean by Portrait and Landscape mode in my post. I don't see where I mentioned it. Maybe you are referring to the directional lock. That is how you unlock the phone (with a series of directions). For instance... left, left, down, down, right, left, up. I mentioned it because that could be causing this issue. That is the method to get past the secure startup as well. A lot of people don't know about that option because you have to enable it in accessibility menu.

That is how you unlock the phone (with a series of directions). For instance... left, left, down, down, right, left, up. I mentioned it because that could be causing this issue. That is the method to get past the secure startup as well. A lot of people don't know about that option because you have to enable it in accessibility menu.

oh instead of a pin or biometrics the pattern lock screen?
but if it was locked because of too many tries then dont think you can do anything. you should have received a message through the email used to register your samsung account and follow it to get it unlocked.
any talk of circumventing this type of lockout isint something that can be discussed on xda because there is no way to prove that it was by accident. and even if it was and there really was a way to bypass it, it would give criminals insight. so sorry but there isint much more that can be said.

Yes, it is an option instead of the regular pattern. I like it because it is hard to copy for anyone looking at you unlock your phone and if you lose it... even looking at the screen will not tell them how to unlock it because they need to know the sequence.
I am unsure what caused it.. maybe me or the updates. I have never had this problem before in my entire life. I had the Note 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 9. (Yes, I love my Notes.) Not one of them have done this and I only noticed the directional lock beginning on the Note 5. I have an S10 as well and I could't find the option. So I am not sure if it is just specific to Galaxy Notes.
I never thought of giving someone else insight on how to get into phones. That is a good point! I understand that not being allowed. I have known about XDA developers for a long time. I think back somewhere in 2007 -2009 when I was very active on Tmonews forums. So I really haven't been on a forum in like 10 years. I am sure a lot of things have advanced since then but I REALLY appreciate the time you took to respond.
I just have two more questions... I am paying for this phone like $30 a month and I also have the $15 insurance. I can't do anything to this phone that would void the warranty. However, the place that told me they may be able to help me is an authorized Samsung repair center. He said he would have to download the firmware and reinstall it on the phone. He also told me that he could do it without losing data (Home Restore) but if something is corrupted it also could erase. It is with a machine that is directly given to them from Samsung. If somehow I lose my data....can it be recovered if I pay a data recovery company? These pictures are VERY important. Honestly, my data is more important to me than the phone.
Lastly, I remember my email I used for the Samsung account however it was an outlook email and it gave me so much trouble trying to log in (even when the phone was fine). However, if I am able to get in do you think it would take the message off the screen? I know my directional lock to get back in. All I need to do is get back to that screen but it won't pop up.
Again seriously.... I thank you so much for trying to help!

i doubt that the samsung repair shop would be able to do anything for your data. but i guess it might be good to give them a call and explain the situation.
but i think they would basically do what was discussed earlyer using odin.
regarding the rest on how to get back in the phone I've never been locked out so i hope someone can chime in and see if there is a way to get it to prompt again or maybe have a remote unlock. co to samsung.com, login with your account that was used to setup the phone and check around. i know there is a remote dashboard on there to find your phone and do other commands remotely. i know for a fact that locking remotely exists. maybe its just as simple as having the phone online, lock it remotely and maybe the prompt will be seen on the device.( trigger it so to say)
good luck

Thanks so much! I actually got locked out of my Samsung Account and my email so I called Samsung and they got
me right back in. The first person told me they couldn't do anything but then she gave me a number (855-795-0509) to call. She said it was for the "find my mobile" department so I could see if could unlock it. The second lady helped me get back into my account. She was a huge help! I was able to access the remote unlock but it didn't work. I guess because the phone isn't connected to data at all. Is there anyway to force it to connect to a network? I reinserted my sim so it would recognize my number and also so it would have data to connect.
My last option is to go back to the store and see if what he does can fix it. The lady at Samsung said that people have been reporting issues with this update so it wasn't just me. I literally have to keep these files or it could be my life. I have to edit video for a celebrity and a lot of it is on the internal memory. I had to put it there because I use Adobe Clip and it never finds files that are on my SD card. It is just easy to me because I can do it on the go and not have to carry around my laptop everywhere. Next time I will surely back it up somewhere. This is the first time I haven't.
