Looking for latest "best experience" ROM for my Sister (Urgent) - Nook HD, HD+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello and good day/night to all.
First let me recap, I haven't been active in this device forum since I got the NOOK HD+ for my Sister and removed Stock to flash CM9, then she left our country to study in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is now back but for Vacations for a very short period of time ( she lives in few days).
She told me she had problems with the firmware, mostly when she turned on WiFi the device would slow down a lot making it almost unusable. Her laptop broke so she depends on the tablet for now for even study.
So the first thing I did was to do a quick research for options. I picked the New maintained MM CM13 build by Amaces and been testing for 2 days now but its definitely not going to work out for my sister as MM is recent and there are many things to work out still.
I'm here to ask you guys (flashaholics) for advice. What ROM would you recommend me for my sister.
She needs something that just works, bugs free, good multitasking, near smooth experience that doesn't slow down after a while, good WiFi that don't cause issues.
"We don't care on the eye candy part and I don't mind if its really outdated firmware like Jellybean, ICS, Kitkat nor if it has a bunch of features."
So please recommend me the best and simple (light) experience ROM in performance that last that you've flashed in the past.
Hope you understand the rush of this, I'm running out of time, we are traveling plus I'm the one driving so I really don't have enough time to test different ROMs blind.
Thank you so much in advance.

For a simple, stable rom I suggest CM10.1.3 stable. Go to my thread linked in my signature for instructions.

FWIW I've been running CM11 20151122-NIGHTLY build since it first came out and I am very happy with its responsiveness and stability as a daily driver.
I had tried out CM12.1 for a few weeks and found its performance can have wild swings as time goes on.

CM
I would probably grab the last official snapshot cm off the cm website and run that. May not be the fastest or flashiest but it's rock solid. Just my 2 cents

Thank you all for the replies. I just got back from a trip and I'll have time tonight to flash CM 10.1.3, I also have the proper gapps and TabletUI zips ready.
I'll post back how it goes after testing.

There is new CM11 nightly: cm-11-20160221-NIGHTLY-ovation.zip
Has any of you tried it?
Enviado desde mi ghost mediante Tapatalk

OK so tested CM 10.1.3 and I left it that way, she didn't like TabletUI (plus i found few issues with it) so I better reinstalled system.
After I disabled all 3 animations options from developer options , the tablet started feeling a bit more faster/responsive. Enough to not pull my hair while multitasking and using apps.
Wish it be faster while using apps but oh well when I get another chance and enough time, I may try another ROM in it, CM11, as was also recommended.
Thanks!

Mokee is the best right now and has an amazing ui
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2761812 after trying latest cm nightly(Setup wizard stopped working) and cm11 m12 snapshot(tablet would automatically reboot after shutting down).
So far, i have never experienced any of those issues on mokee.

Thank you @paz4491 I'll give it a try next time. I've used mokee in the past in my MotoX and I liked it.
How long have you been running the Mokee ROM?

I couldn't get Mokee to work. "Unfortunately, Google Keyboard has failed." kept popping up when I tried to go through the setup. How can I get through setup without a keyboard?
I tried the Marshmallow ROM available here on XDA and had similar problems - in addition to random freezing.
I'm still running PacMan ROM 4.4.4 - no problems.

Hmm that is very strange, never had this issue on my hummingbird..
boot into twrp, mount the system and use twrp's file manager to delete the stock keyboard in system/priv-app....After rebooting you can then use adb to install another third party keyboard.

The keyboard failure is usually because you used the wrong version of gapps for the version of rom you installed.

Plus Mokee has their own gapps package that is the recommended one.
At list that was the case for my MotoX when I tried Mokee month ago.

Sorry if this is a bit off-topic but i've just flashed this rom to my GT-P1000. Almost all of my apps do not work, including facebook. Can anyone confirm that this is normal with this release candidate?
Also the tablet hangs when i try to reboot into recovery from ICS.

[Q] Recommended ICS ROM

What ICS ROM do you recommend me? Thanks!
Both The CM9 nightlies and AOKP are nice ICS ROMs.
They are stable. While AOKP has more features and flexibility, CM9 nightly in general has less bugs and more builds to update from.
Thanks. And works the camera in both of them. It is important for me.
I know cm7 and I like cyanogen. So I will start with this.
Enviado desde mi Nexus One usando Tapatalk 2
Camera works on both. But I think CM9has a better menu for the camera app.
AOKP camera does not have the complete menu therefore flash setting is impossible to change.
I imagine you can get camera patch from CM9 flash it to AOKP. Btw AOKP is a CM9 based rom.

I've been wanting to upgrade from 2.3.6 to ICS but in dilemma if I want to install CM9 or AOKP. Both looks like nice ROM. I guess now I am leaning toward AOKP. I guess I will flash CM9 first for a week, and try AOKP for another week before deciding to stick with one. Thanks.
I finally am trying Cm9 and it works ok. I think it will be my daily rom.

I don't suggest you to install AOKP, because it derivates from CM9, so they have the same bugs. What more, AOKP has too small keys (I'm referring to those who are at the bottom of the screen and allow you to go back, return home or view the open applications), even if it has some features more, and they're a bit buggy, too. Personally, I returned to Overcome 4.1.0, since ICS has too small icons and the battery used to last less than 24 hours without an intense use.
By the way, in English which of these expressions is correct: "What's more" or "What more"?

I am on aokp #36 and I really can't let you say it is more buggy than cm9.
I can do everything without problem.
Small buttons is known issue and easily resolved ( workaround) by customising the buttons. Just add one more or change one of them to
a "menu" button and no more tiny buttons.
On the other hand, cm9 is changing daily so it is more buggy.
Btw, aokp is by team kang, and not related to cm.
Only stimpz0r's aokp for p1000 has TE4M's CM9 stuff included with permission.

As you are discussing about Bootloop, i want to verify about installation.
When i flashed CM9 , i got bootloop . And then i followed the installation instruction from AOKP which is pressing up volume key and install .zip again. and it's worked. Is it the correct way to install CM9? or i just didn't give enough time for bootloop (cuz in CM9 instruction it's normal). I waited not less than 3 minutes.
guys! have you tried cdesai's unofficial build? its awesome! you can download it from goo.im, under devs section->cdesai. im really loving his build. navbar can be fully customized, even the toggles. cant wait for the next release of his build!
just one thing though, i wish that the official nightly builds will soon be merged with these such customization options. it will be like an early christmas present!

one thing that bugs me in the aokp builds is the spacing of the navbar buttons, navbar buttons are too close apart.
Acually all roms with ics 4.0.4. Tried them all, all working fine, for little issues is always a solution, but so far i prefer aokp with its features. The only thing not working for me yet is direct wifi, but iam sure it will be fixed soon.

Hello.. Pls say something on this
I will say: "as long as it works"
The install method for CM9 and AOKP is identical.
Also note that CM9 Dev thread said:
Normal install :
You need to have a kernel with CWM Recovery
Get the zip from the above download links
Put the zip on your sdcard, reboot into recovery, and install the zip
It'll reboot a few times during the install, that's normal
What does that tell you? Sounds like boot loop, right? Yes, it is the same.
Coming from BML, it will throw you to recovery.
If you come from Overcome, you will notice that the CWM is no longer Overcome's one, it may say HumberOS or whatever.
That is what the first install done to you. So proceed with second time install and you will be ok.
Again, as long as it works.

cm/pa building/discussion & plans.

hello all, I've just picked up a razr i as a temp standin while my xperia Z is away under warranty repair.
(it was cheap enough to keep too play with afterwards)
is there any reason why no-one has started on CM /PA yet? I've looked through all the posts and can't see anything remotely like a real custom rom..
I'm happy to start working on this (will probably leave it till my Z is back in use though), but would like to get a decent team together to work on it, rather than do it on my own, which is what I've done in the past for a few devices and burnt myself out!

I want people with a more technical bent than a lot of the users on here to get involved.
for those people, is there anything I'm missing that would stop us building for this?
we have kernel source, and omars kernel looks fairly decent basepoint looking at his git, and some source from motorola that looks sloppily put together.
we can flash with fastboot, and even using blobs it doesn't look too arduous to get at least a 4.1 based build going, so am I missing something?
I'm pretty open on how I work, but I don't tolerate people demanding stuff, or expecting perfection, this will be a W.I.P for a very long time (especially if done on my own).
As far as i know, the problem is on intel processor libs... That's what i've read somewhere around here

hello the problem is that no source AOSP (Cyanogen or AOKP) have x86 libraries and formats, visit www.androidx86.org
if you need a beta tester let me know
The app also must be compatible with x86
The problem I faced was that at the moment of booting it kept restarting netd -- which is odd seeing how the Kernel iptables/ipchains and net configuration is the same on Motorola's one. [info]
I even tried adding and compiling extra modules on the Kernel without much luck -- and it was not the typical ramdisk *.rc files fix here.
Hmm I presumed that with the amount of x86 development boards about there would be a load more work on bringing cm across.
I'll start to have a look at it in depth in the next couple of weeks.

Harder cause it's not only based on cm10 it's alto different port
For MiUi 4.0 there was the possibility to make a stock based Miui Rom,
There even was one for our Razr i, even though it wasn't very popular.
Is this possibility gone with v5 or is there any other reason not to?

I got Intel's AOSP Android (4.1.2) to build and then made some binary blob overlays on top. It show the Motorola animation logo on the Phone and then it starts flickering -- I have yet to plug adb to it, but I need to go to sleep soon.
Experimental File, adb enabled at boot: RazRi_AOSP_A001.zip [Flashes boot animation, this is using Motorola's *.prop files, which shouldn't be]
Experimental File, adb enabled at boot: RazRi_AOSP_A002.zip [Have not tried this one, this has safe cflags and default build.prop]

Q: Anyone with two phones who knows what to experiment with? I put the instructions to build on the github readme at the moment.

How about Miui V7. Did you try?

There were a lot of stable cm and aosp+ builds of KitKat. Download 1 of them and flash a modern kernel for lp or one of them that has KitKat support and it should work just fine. I flashed carbon rom then flashed xcelerate build 65 kernel without any issues booting or functioning. I never used it long enough to confirm random reboot was gone but as that was related to kernel issue the odds are it wasn't going to ever happen

Me too. I don't really like MIUI. Why don't you try Lollipop ROM like Blisspop. It's quite stable, no bugs, no SOD, customizable, you can use as daily ROM. I used Extended Partition, TWRP and TK Gapps.
It is better than MIUI, I think.
lollipop don't have good battery backup
this is not entirely true ... the difference is about 10 or up to 20% in favor of miui (stable) ... the latest china developer MIUI rom also suffers from poor battery life... sacrifice 1h (sot) use of the phone is quite profitable ... in my eyes.
Sot may not see a huge difference but with standby time KitKat blew lp out of the water unless you didn't flash gapps in lp. That's my opinion and experience anyway. Gapps in lollipop is always a huge battery drain I've never been able to fully control even by turning everything off in app ops and etc.

There are any issues with your configuration ?
Only real problem I seen was a slower charge and the back camera didn't work and the front camera quality was crap. If it had a working camera I would honestly still be using carbon KitKat or even pa aosp+ KitKat which didn't have the slow charging issue but didn't look as nice though either.
Sorry my quotes no longer work Tapatalk has to keep screwing up a good thing and turning it into crap

out of all the custom roms i tried, Ivan's aosp kitkat was the most stable and I had no problems with it except the capacitive button light issue which wasn't a major concern for me, for customizations xposed was my way to go. I highly recommend you to try it if stability is your concern ✌

I wouldn't recommend it because the only good KitKat rom for this phone was Ivan's. Pa wasn't bad but you won't have a camera anymore. I never tested it on Ivan's but I did test it on carbon and WiFi worked fine on it if I remember correctly. The slow charging (which is fixable flashing a boot.img from a rom with faster charging) and not having a working camera kept me from keeping it. I still wouldn't recommending going to KitKat unless you can persuade a Dev to make a fully functional KitKat rom. I seen a couple devs say they would but never followed through and with all the real devs working on marshmallow your not going to see any help there.

On PA with Xcelerate, Wi-Fi didn't work and also there was frequent android.media force closes. Not with other kernels though. Camera of course doesn't work.
I didn't stayed long on the ROM. But I did got a random reboot type once (in PA the phone simply dies and u have to hard reboot). Camera doesn't work of course.
Ivan's ROM is laggy af. The scrolling is laggy everywhere and etc. I don't like the custom kernels as the phone heats (little bit less with Xcelerate). And not quite sure whether the upcoming Xcelerate build will be compatible with MIUI.
Only MIUI is the usable Kitsap ROM quite actually. Would have been cool if Xiaomi upgraded the Android version, which is not gonna happen at all IMO

Keeping up with Android

I guess this is the right place to post this question as the other one would be more focused on the development side.
What is in our opinion and experience the best rom / mod running on N7000?
I'm stuck with the stock updated only to KitKat and missing on security updates, but I'm also concerned that if I run any rom for later Android version my Note would get extremely slow.

For security, go with CM12.1 at the absolute maximum. CM13 (and potentially CM14) feels like it's gonna kill the Note.

It's true what @AutumQueen92 says but if you are coming from a completely stock phone with KK it's almost certainly slow and laggy by now so you should see a big improvement than your current speed provided you also flash a kernel that has emmc trim support and also a bigger partition too, even though CM12 may be marginally slower than stock in original mint condition!
I flashed NightOwl 12.1 which includes a kernal with trim support as per Savin Vasudevan instructions to increases partition size for apps and the phone feels much faster. The main reason is the memory is trimmed or can be trimmed with fstrim app manually. See the "How to Repartition your device and install this Rom:" link on the NightOwl CM12.1.1 thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note/development/rom-t2938649 , best of all this ROM gets the monthly security updates you are after!
(Also very stable, mines never had an FC, though I do have an issue recently with the videocam freezing but that is my phone I think not the ROM)
Many thanks, guys! Very useful input form you! I'll start with CM12 as soon as I get the new battery from Amazon. Looking forward to see Note 1 in its (near) old glory and with security updates.
Im not even testing NightOwl cm 13. Right now Im on NightOwl cm 12.1 and I must say rom is little laggy from time to time. But without frezzes or force closes. Only issue with camera in whatsapp randomly.
I will try again NightOwl cm 11 cause I use them some time ago and I think that kitkat version was running little faster. Even if I loved Lollipop looks, recent apps and night option I will test again kitkat from Bauners hands.
