Consumer gear vr - rubbish - Samsung Gear VR

1. Note 4 Gear VR - immersive, excellent FOV
2. S6, S6 edge - cant comment but i can assume it would of been the same as the note 4, since it was designed for a 5.1" phone.
3. S6, S6 edge, S6 edge plus, note 5 - looks like your looking through a toilet roll tube. What a dissapointment. What happend?
Last thing, does anyone know if the note 5 will work with the first innovator edition?
Rant over,
Thanks

Have you got things set up right on the s6 the fov is excellent so not sure about this toilet tube effect you are seeing

It does not, sadly, and I don't just mean physical incompatibility. The Note 5 just doesn't launch the Oculus software at all.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=62423916&postcount=7
By contrast, the "consumer" Gear VR 2015 model apparently works on a Note 4 on a software level, but Samsung was stupid enough to have the physical construction of the front smartphone mount block off the Note 4 unless you start cutting bits and pieces off.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=64823075&postcount=192
What I really want to know is if the flattened sides of the later Gear VR pose a problem for Note 4/5 use, since I can't imagine them being all that great for FOV on the larger screens. The Note 4 Innovator Edition model already feels kinda like you're looking through ski goggles as it is.
Better yet, if someone could test a modified "consumer" Gear VR with a Note 4 that has a Note 5 ROM port installed, I'd like to see it. As it stands, the Note 4 Gear VR doesn't work, presumably for the same software-related reasons it doesn't work on the Note 5. Those ROM ports obviously pass the phone off as a Note 5.

Perhaps if you are not happy with Samsung's approach, you should just order BlitzWolf vr or similar.

gear vr compatability with note edge?

Hi i have been searching everywhere for this answer. Do you think the note edge will be compatible with the upcoming gear vr? I know it says only compatible with note 4 but the specs are identical and dimensions are similar... The only reason it mite not work that I can think of is if the gear vr uses the note 4 screen fully ie 100% then the edge part would be an issue.

Sadly, works only with Note 4.
Resurrecting an old thread. Has anyone else tried?
From this review:
http://gizmodo.com/samsung-gear-vr-review-hell-yes-i-will-strap-this-phon-1670312012
"It's worth noting here that while Samsung has pointedly said that you're not supposed to try and fit the Galaxy Note Edge in here, you totally can. I mean, it doesn't "fit" in the conventional sense, but I've crammed it in a few times without breaking anything (yet). The problem is that the Note Edge doesn't launch the Oculus app when you plug it in. I'm sure there's probably some workaround but it probably involves black magic. Or at least root access."
Read this too when it first came out and was wondering the same thing, such a tease.

Note 4 Gear VR compatible with Note 5?

Now that Note 5 is officially announced, I am trying to find some official/semi-official information on whether Note 4 Gear VR will be compatible with Note 5? Any ideas?
Thanks,
Osho
Of course not. Different sizes, they told they are about to release a. New compatible version for them
Honestly they are the same size...I don't see why it wouldn't work. My friend just got his note 5 today so I will give it a try in my Note 4 Gear VR

They never said that exactly. They told us to wait for Oculus Connect before buying a new phone, so that could mean no Gear VR for the Note 5 if they decide on announcing a VR phone.
What about Note Edge?
Will any VR work with note edge either Glaxay Vr or Innovator edition?
Any trick....!

No support for the Note Edge.
Got my note 5 and have been trying to connect it to the gear VR (Note 4 version). I got the oculus apps installed (ported from my Note 4 using Samsung smart switch), but the micro usb connector on the gear vr has a bump on it which stops anything other than the Note 4 from connecting. I looked inside the Note 4 micro usb port and I can see a notch to accommodate the bump. So Samsung succeeded in making a standardized connector into a proprietary one. *Hurray!*
Anyway, I then bought a micro usb extender cable and cut the notch into it myself. Still a no go. The extender doesn't fit on all the way (only about 4/5 the way). It seems like the female end on the Note 4 not only has a notch, but is also deeper *Hurray again!*
I tried connecting the Note 4 with the extender anyway, but couldn't get it to enter the oculus app. My last thought is to file down the bump on the gear vr connector. My only concern is that the bump is required to engage something on the Note 4. Definitely don't want to make a $200 mistake.
Has anyone tried shaving this bump down? Or has anyone heard of someone trying this?
Update: I filed down the bump and got the Note 5 to fit. Unfortunately, nothing happened. I'll try again after the official firmware update. However, I also tried the Galaxy S6 and S6 edge with no luck and those do have the firmware needed so it looks like there is a software lock preventing anything other than the Note 4 from working. The good news is that the Note 4 still fits and works :thumb: I'll be posting about this on the Techisode TV channel if anyone wants to see images and video of the process.
Update 2: video uploaded.
How about changing build prop. Wonder if it checks build prop for verification. Also wonder if there was any vr apps already pre-installed before you sidesynced anything. If so try using vr setup wizard. Then again the S6 didn't work so probably no go. Could be a kernel thing. That's what delayed the lollipop update back then for devices with gear vr software.

What a pity Galaxy Note 5 not work with Gear VR.
This isnt too bad of a Necro, but curious if anyone had any other trys with this
I don't think anyone else is going to bother now that the latest Gear VR iteration got confirmed yesterday at Oculus Connect, with Note 5 and S6e+ support along with the smaller S6 variants. At least the Note 5 can do Gear VR after all.
If anything, what might make me curious is the inverse: taking that recent Gear VR iteration, when it hits store shelves, and checking to see if the Note 4 acknowledges it at all. I'm guessing not, since it's not officially supported and the USB descriptor probably won't match up enough for the Gear VR Service to do its thing.
I hope the Note 4 works with the new gear VR. I don't like the direction Samsung is going with there product support and I don't like the Note 5. The gear VR for the Note 4 clearly has issues that have been resolved with subsequent versions. It's extremely disappointing Samsung most likely will ignore and forget the Note 4, especially even more disappointing since it's the device that started this VR evolution.

Gear vr - innovator note 4 vs consumer note 5

I had the note 4 when it came out and if was amazin and really injoyed it. I just bought thd note 5 consumer and it doesnt seem as good. It looks like i am looking tbrough a cardboard tube. Does anyone else have the same issue? Or maybe it was the same

S7 Edge or Note 6

Hi gang i`m due for a new phone in April and as much as the gorgeous S7 Edge looks appealing the rumours that starts lingering about the Note 6 sounds very promising but that phone is at least 4 months away, what's your thinking?

What's the point of this thread? We barely have any rumors on N6, nor any real info. It's too soon to compare the two - because you can't.

I think, you should wait for note 6, there are two reasons for that:
1) u'll get spen and more improvements over s series.
2) in countries like india, there will be a price cut after few months, u'll be able to get better deals if u wanted to go for a s7 edge.
I gotta admit that this is pretty pointless thread, but we all love tech and stuff so, here is my opinion:
I'd wait for the note 6. While the s7 edge is certainly appealing, it will suffer a strong price drop as all samsung phones do in the first months. Hence, waiting for the note 6 will not only give you clarity about whether or not you like the note 6, but it also will make the decision to go with the s7 edge less expensive. Looking at the differences between the s6 and s7, I'd argue that samsung will do pretty much the same thing with the note 6: Same processor and camera like the s7, bigger battery, refined design, more software features, slightly larger display, micro-sd slot. I highly doubt that they will increase the amount of RAM to like 6GB though. It will stay at 4GB I guess.
To sum it up: if you need/want the S-Pen, wait for the note. If you don't, go for something else.
I'd definitely wait for the Note 6.. 5.7" vs 5.5" for the S7 edge.. and if it sees the same battery capacity bump it's likely to have ~4000mAh with the S Pen bonus and other optimizations to the OS
I purchased the regular S7 as I wamted something a bit smaller, but haven't been entirely satisfied as I do miss the s-pen and larger screen (the screen on the S7 edge is really irritating). So I'm going to get the Note 6 once it launches.
I agree about jumping the gun but it's only because i`m due for a new phone in 2 weeks time, l love my Note 4 which is why I was wondering if l should stick with the Note family .

Keep it until the Note 6 is launched.
i gave my wife my s7 edge and im waiting for the note 6.. im back on my note 4 atm and happy i gave the s7 edge away
I am following news about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 6. There are rumors about the next Galaxy Note will come with great new features, except a downgraded display with only 1024 pressure points.
(Source: "http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_note_6_rumored_to_come_with_whoppin g_6gb_ram_58inch_display-news-16649.php")
Quote:"In addition, the rumor also notes that the handset's screen will be pressure-sensitive with 1,024 pressure points. This, however, doesn't seem correct as it's a downgrade from the Note5, which already has 2,048 pressure points."
My question is, how relevant are pressure points, and how may it affect the general use? (Couldn't find anything specific on the web).
Also, is this possible? Can Samsung decide to "Downgrade" their display on the Note 6 compared to previous phones?

i prefer having a non edge phone ... i realized im not going to use the edge features and didnt like how i had to use it differently (holding etc) also i didnt like the tall and thin screen style .. prefer the notes wider stance
I just got the s7 and happy I did! Its an amazing phone and blazing fast. The camera is top notch! I also use my note 4 as a secondary phone and while using both, there is a huge step above with the s7. The note 5 was never released in Europe and if they do bring the note 6 here, I will give my wife the s7 LOL
note 6 for me. upgrade in september, so perfect timing. don't like the s7.
Wait for the Note 6, the Note phones tend to set the standard for at least the following 1.5years.
The Note 6 is said to bring:
5.8inch display
6GB RAM
IP68 protection
And of course the SPen and its software that still to this day set the Note range apart from everything else on the market.
Gladly waiting for the Note 6 as nothing so far has matched the Note 4.

The Edge devices also tend to feel very fragile.
I agree, the Note tends to have a far more solid build and stance. Its like comparing a Range Rover Evoque (Edge) to the big body Range Rover Vogue Autobiography (Note).

I have been using Note4 for one year bought a s6 edge+ 64gb .broke it when it dropped from just 0.5m hieght on a carpeted floor
The screen was shattered completely although the phone had a spigen rugged cover on. The repair was very expensive nearly 1/3 price of the phone.
Sold it the day i recieved it back after repair. And will stick to my Note4 , its the best phone for me using it with a 128GB Sandisk sdcard
Advice: Dont buy a Note Edge phone if you have fumbling hands.
if an upgrade is necessary and you can bare the smaller screen on S7 i.e 5.1 inch go ahead.
otherwise wait for Note 6.
I am thinking of shifting to some other brand e.g Xperia X performance may be amazing.. As i am fedup of fragile glass build phones . and xperia x perfomance is not made of glass by sony this time.
i think note 6 is not right choice it will be the first device supporting Type-C that meaning you will faces a lot of troubles with it
my current plan upgrading to S7E then waiting for Note 7 or S8E
one more thing .... Samsung will forced to make a big step forward in S8E and N7 because Chinese manufactures has got a big piece of market cake .
if you just waiting for N6 you will not get any real development compared with S7E

Galaxy note 5 buying in mid 2019 ?

well as the title says i'm really curious that is it worth buying the note 5 in mid 2019 since i was in the market to buy a phone i can find s7 and note 5 to be in the same price tag and both are in good condition and (used phones both of em) i got confused which i should buy s7 or note 5 and my bet was on the note 5 until i saw both prices and i would like to hear your guys opinion that which one should i buy. ( i wanted s-pen features coming from note 3 )
The Note 5 was a great phone. The only reason I traded it in was the amazing Note 8 promotion. I found it to be every bit as fast as the S7 and the larger flat screen is much better.
The only considerations I would make:
-The Note 5 stopped getting updates at 7.0 Nougat whereas the S7 got 8.0 Oreo.
-The Note 5 does not have Always on Display and would require a third party app for this feature where it's built into the S7
-The S7 has water resistance, the Note 5 does not.

what about xda support well i was gonna buy note 8 but since it's still have 1000$ tag in my country rip :x so i thought note 5 would be a good choice but s7 was available to and have you rooted your note 5 with any Samsung experience rom along with Gcam ? The S7 has water resistance, about this i think i should be cautious since im buying a refurbished phone

the note 5 is still a pretty solid phone and if you install a good rom you can get aod and other features too, but the development is pretty much dead, so I'd go for the s7 edge. It has a better low light camera and the xda support is comparatively better too. Also not to mention expandable storage. Have both currently and if you dont need the s pen that much the s7 edge is a better choice.
