Seeing Chinese lettering - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, 2 weeks ago, I woke up my phone and I had a different wallpaper and a local advertisement. I changed my wallpaper, rebooted and it was fixed. This morning, I turned on my phone and now have chinese looking lettering at the bottom (see pic). No matter the screen I'm on, if I turn off the screen and then back on, this pops up and changes font twice then goes away. Any ideas?

I have same problem and was not able to find the solution. Does anyone know how to fix this??????

I'm thinking it may be related to synapse.

Bump?

Well, what ROM are you on? What apps do you have installed? Did you change anything in synapse? Did you try uninstalling everything or a different rom?

I'm on TexHDN4 5.0.1, my phone has been set up for a few months now with no changes (no new apps, I don't allow auto updates until I read the reason for update) and I have not modified any settings. I am going to look for a new update to this rom or just reflash it. That lettering is my only symptom aside form GPS once in a while telling me I am in Eureka Kansas and then fixes itself to my home state.

screen turns off after 1 sec when it's being turned on

Hi, I have this problem when i turn on the screen it turns off, tho only the "screen" the buttons still light up and i can feel the vibration when i use the screen. I have tried different roms and still this problem. Sometimes i manage to get it to work and don't have these probs, But i really don't know what it is Thanks in advance!
P.S some roms have this problem for me and some don't so i don't think it's a hardware problem.

Hi there,
funnily I just had this issue yesterday, but I also know it from the past. After some time I found the cause (at least in my case):
the Lightflow-App
You don't happen to have it installed as well? As soon as I uninstalled LightFlow, things went back to normal for me. It started for me after I did some customizing in LightFlow, so it was logic to start with uninstalling that.
I suspect it has something to do with how it is setup or notifications in general. Maybe you have another Notification-App installed?
Let me know if this helped...

Hi, thanks uninstalled lightflow and it stoped, have been force to change roms i just installed becuase i thought this was some problem from the rom.
thanks again

[Q] Weird screen glitches (4.4.4)

So I used a guide a few months back to make my HTC One into the Google Play edition. Today I finally got around to installing some updates. I went to 4.4.3 and installed it, and then noticed that there was another update out, 4.4.4, and went ahead and it installed that as well. Everything came out fine, but I'm having some issues:
The biggest is a flickering kind of screen glitch - I've attached a photo. I can't take screenshots anymore, either; it tells me that 'storage may be in use'. It goes away if I swipe or change something, but always comes back if I, say, reopen the keyboard. It happens everywhere, including the status bar.
The powerdown menu also no longer displays. My screen simply goes dark like it does when the menu opens, but it doesn't display the options. It still functions as if it's there, as I've been able to use it to shut down my phone.
I haven't been able to find anything online about it - perhaps I should just roll back to the last version I was running if I can't figure this out.
Anybody know? Wasn't having issues like this before.

Screen overlay

Ever since the last July security update, when I try to use any number of apps from capital one too smart select with my s pen, I get it asking permissionas then coming up saying I need to turn screen overlay off. This is an os permission that many programs use. Unless I turn it off on every app, I cannot give the current apps permissions. However summarily turning them off screws up those apps.
Is Is anyone else having this problem?

I'm glad to hear that I'm not alone. I've been really struggling lately. Seems like quite a few of the new apps trigger that "Overlay" problem. I'm not sure how/what to do. Please help
I've been having the same exact issues. It's been driving me nuts. The only thing I can think of is it must have something to do with the latest security patch we got.
Hopefully they fix it, soon!! How do we let them know?

I just turned off all the apps which using screen overlay. After I installed the new app successfully, I turned them all back on. That's annoying, but working.

From my experience, that only works until you open/download another app... Then you start all over
I am also having this problem, I am glad I wasn't alone, I was beginning to think it was just me!
I've found that restarting the device will resolve this issue MOST of the time. It worked for me twice yesterday...
But it's such a tedious workaround!

Go in Dr. Ketan rom & check in few days back post. Someone has posted a zip file. Just flash it & its perfect. Plz take a backup before flashing the zip.

Screen Tint issue and AOD issue after Oreo update?

I just (excitedly) updated to Oreo, and now I am wishing I had not. I love the new features, but two really irritating issues presented themselves:
1) My screen is not tinted an awful color. It looks almost like my blue light filter is on (but it isn't - when I turn it on it gets HILARIOUSLY bad). Whites are not white. Adaptive mode is the worst, basic mode makes it tolerable but not good at all. My screen looked so much better before.
2) My always on display is wonky. It occasionally is so dim I cannot even see it. Sometimes it is fine, other time it's bad. No rhyme or reason to it (my lighting is the same so it's not adjusting to the environment).
Neither is these things were an issue before. Anyone else experiencing these things? Any idea how to fix either one?
Same issies
Horrible screen tint, opaque orange and the whites are awful. They work fine during initial bootup of the phone, then change. Contacted Verizon and Samsung, they are both aware and no fix as of yet to what the deal is. So do not update your note8, there's absolutely nothing exciting or great with the update. Waited 3+ months for this update, had it on my Z2 force and it was great, ABSOLUTELY blows on the note 8...

Try clearing the cache in recovery
You can do that by turning the phone off
Hold Volume Up+Power+Bixby and wait till the blue screen goes away
Navigate down with the volume keys and select Wipe Cache Partition with the power button.
Select Yes
Select Reboot System Now
If that doesn't help, I would either try a factory reset or flash Oreo with Odin.
I didn't do the OTA, but flashed the ROM with Odin instead and I have zero issues

Update
Did the wipe cache/partition and no luck.
Won't try the FDR option as that was never worked for any issues I've had in the past decsde. Always a waste of time and hassle. Unless that's a guaranteed fix by Samsung or Verizon I will wait for a software patch update or whatever else it is to fix this issue.
OP, did you have blue light filter enabled prior to Oreo update?
Furthermore, it seems to me like Samsung devices prefer having their original Android OS , meaning updates seems to make them not as true and stable as they originally were out of the box. Perhaps another little sly tactic for us users to upgrade hardware yearly.

Yeah something definitely went wrong for OP during install. I would start fresh and reinstall or reset.
I haven't taken the update. But its a new Android version. I personally always factory reset before updating to a new Android base version. I've never had issues on any phone Samsung or not when clearing data first.

I also factory reset with ever major update and never had a problem.
The bluelight filter is off, turning it on makes it way worse. I've never had to do a FDR with any phone for an update for over a decade, but those phones were all Motorola. This is my first Samsung and it's definitely a problem with the software causing this orange effect on all the white portions of the screen. Samsung and Verizon both confirmed this has happened to several so hopefully there'll be a fix soon as this is most annoying.
reset here too. no more issues.
I've always factory reset before taking a major update.
Do you have any substratum themes installed? Substratum seems to be buggy for oreo. I disabled all the them and my lockscreen went back to normal color.
I've never used it downloaded any themes
Clearing Blue Light or Screen Tint issues with Oreo on Samsung S8
My friend had this issue on an S8 after Oreo. It started by dismissing a dialog box when launching Google Play Books then opening a book. The dialog was asking something about Blue Light mode. Dismissing apparently caused a default to Blue Light mode and Always Enable. But, we could not find a way to get back to those settings in Google Play Books. Using the system setting to turn off did not work and turning on made screen colors worse. So, we uninstalled the Google Play Books app, restarted phone. Still bad colors at this point. Next, we re-installed app. After opening app and then selecting a book the same dialog box appeared. We selected Settings this time and turned the slider to OFF for Blue Light mode. Now, the Blue Light mode is off for the app and the rest of the phone screens outside of the app. Everything seems like correct colors again.
Even if you do not use Google Play Books, maybe this process will unstick a setting for you.
I don't use or have never used Google play books. Never seen a prompt like that either

It's funny, I actually factory reset because the cache wipe didn't work. All looked well. Then after the initial setup (with a beautiful white background), my home screen popped up, and the screen immediately got all tinted. Some setting must have restored with my account! So I factory reset AGAIN, didn't import my setting or apps, then redid everything on my phone from scratch. Now it's fine. What a pain!

Thanks for posting this!! I had the same problem and couldn't figure why. After reading this, I went into Google Play Books and simply turned the night light off, and problem solved! It seems the nightlight setting in Google Play Books gets stuck in Oreo and overlays everything.

Question Can't turn off always on display

Have turned off AOD as I don't need it nor want it and the white fingerprint circle pops up every ten seconds or so even though I've said I don't want AOD.
Has anyone else got this crap behaviour??

Lol honestly mate, AOD is off and fingerprint animation is also off. Try it yourself, I think it's a bug.
I've just turned on AOD, going to leave that bitmoji thing on. Why not.
I've tried everything to get rid of the FP, it just won't go.

I'm sure if you tried it would do the same thing. Probably one of the many issues.
It's definitely a beta this firmware

I even went so far as to disable the system AOD apk via an apk disabler tool & that did not work.
IDK if you ever found the actual toggle to turn it off......I finally found it by selecting the search result in Settings.
I typed in Always & stopped there,finding "Always-On Display".
The toggle is at the very top of the page (FWIW,I missed this earlier when in the settings,it was easy for me to overlook the toggle in dark mode).
If you've already tried this & it's still coming on,here's what I'm trying for the next day or so:
Turn Always-On Display back on & set a scheduled time for one minute.
For example,I've got it turning on at 4:00 A.M. & turning off at 4:01 A.M.
ATM,option 2,the scheduled on/off time,seems to be working.
EDIT;after a few minutes,AOD is coming back on.
This is annoying....... Not looking good as a keeper, not liking OxyColor OS at all, what a mess compared to the OP7T Pro.
Not just this, but, the settings layout (for individual app settings is a trainwreck & power/performance options not sticking, keeps reverting back to out-of-box settings.
Well I think I found a permanent fix for this...it's actually a bug (in my case anyway)
I was forced to wipe my phone, which was a huge pain due to a problem with a mod I'd installed..
Anyway on boot I set everything back up then realised it's got AOD on by default and I went a turned it off.
Low and behold it stayed off..no need to do anything.
So what I think has happened is the update that came recently (11_A.12) that could have caused issues, always good to wipe after an update.
I honestly don't know if this will fix things for you, but it did for me.
Couple that with the fact that I'm now getting unbelievable battery life...I think it's maybe a good idea to at least try, you may not fix your AOD but you may get better battery. As I did, I think you'll probably get both.
Here's a bunch of pics from the last 24 hours, midnight on Thursday evening /start of Friday up till now.
Absolutely amazing.

I just got the 1st system update for the T-Mobile US version.
The AOD option to turn it off is now working.
Here's what is/was strange, pre-update:
The only way I could see/access the Always-On Display settings/toggle was to have the stock OnePlus Launcher as the default home app.
Even then, AOD stayed on, whether toggled on or off.
I was able to figure this out from prior experience with the original Oppo Find X & VIVO NEX.
Very strange that certain (seemingly unrelated) settings would be hidden due to choice of home launcher, but, apparently,BBK doesn't see this as an issue/bug(feature, LOL) that needs to be addressed, guessing this "feature" is persistent on the home market China models/firmware.
Glad it was cleaned up for the T-Mobile US update.
On a somewhat related note, pre-update, I could not find a way to choose "No Lock Screen". I looked in the usual place to find such & it was not available, AFAIK.
Now, post-update, that setting is found in "Developer Options". (Why?????? LOL)
On an unrelated note, post-update, another bug has apparently been taken care of for the T-Mobile US version :
T-Mobile bloatware apps now stay disabled, if chosen to do so. Pre-update, they would re-appear after a reboot.
With these bug fixes, my outlook on keeping this phone has definitely changed for the positive. I still have about 10 days remaining before T-Mobile's buyer's remorse return window closes.
