Hallo.
Used to have a rooted device runnin adaway. After I switched to the Note 5 I have no roote access anymore, so I cannot install adaway. Are there any 'root-less' alternatives to adaway? What about adblock plus? Can I install it without rooting the phone? Does it just block ads in the browser or on a system-level, i.e. inside other apps aswell?
Thank you for your answers!

What is the best method of blocking ads on the RAZR i? I'm running InfiniROM which is based on JB 4.1.2.
Adblockplus was the BEST on my old Android 2.3 phone. On my RAZR i, I'm rooted and everything but it isn't functioning the way it should on my rooted device.
AdAway sort of works. My complaint is that it doesn't block 100% of the ads and when it DOES block them, there is a box saying "cannot display this webpage" in place of where the ad would be.
It this the best it gets until they compile adblockplus to work on x86 android devices or is there something I don't know about?

Thanks. I've had Lucky Patcher all this time and I didn't know it could block ads. It replaced AdAway's ~700kb hosts file with a beefy 1.3MB hosts file. It doesn't work as well as adblock but it's the best solution so far.

Are you talking about the one on adblockplus.org? Man, I really wish that would work. It currently doesn't work on x86 androids (the root functions don't work) and it probably never will.
The adblockplus android team is too busy keeping up with the newer JB updates. They're probably not going to bother to fix their app for the couple thousand or less RAZR i users when they've got millions of other users to fix other issues for.
Why not use Adfree? Works like a charm.

In adaway, enable the webserver.
I took all the default hosts files from AdAway, the hosts file that Lucky Patcher provides and another anti ad hosts file that I had and merged them all into one using the Linux terminal. I also deleted the duplicate lines with the terminal. This gave me an ~8.6MB hosts file.
There are sometimes boxes that say "could not display this webpage" just like there is with Adaway and Adfree. It's just that with this hosts file, less of them actually get through. I'm happy with this solution.
If someone wants to test it, use a root file explorer, backup the original hosts file, put this in the original hosts file's place, give this new file the same permissions as the original one and then restart.
This post is almost a year old now, can you maybe merge the updated hosts with the newer MoAB thread file (unless its the same thing?)

Unzip and use the hosts file from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916098 . It works great.
Is it possible to get rid of advertising and other recommendations on Miui?

If you have root you can edit the hosts file.
I have the root and I have installed the app adaway but I still have recommendations on YouTube.
Will try, thanks.
Hosts are those from adaway

The Adaway app does not work any YouTube ads. I don't think modifying the host files will help with removing ads at all..
I need help in getting rid of those extremely annoying youtube ads before something plays... My device is rooted so im sure there's an easy way?
Lastly is there any way to enable youtube playback with screen off or in a different window? (there used to be a xposed module for this a long time ago...)
THANKS !!!
Check out the iYTBP thread. Should be in the General Android Apps&Games section.
It's basically YouTube with bg playback and inbuilt adblocking

Ah, you don't necessarily need the Magisk variant. I wouldn't recommend it, just clutters Magisk imho.
Go for the rootless variant, install the iYTBP-Youtube and MicroG-for-iYTBP (both can be found on the MediaFire links or AFH) and just launch&setup with your primary account you use YT usually with.
Don't worry about battery. I'm using that combo on my N8 (rooted w/ Magisk) aswell and it's no drainage.
download tutuapp apk.. then download youtube ++ and iYTBP from tutuapp store:good: It will also work on non rooted phone
I installed iYTBP manually & it works great. Really easy. Uninstall prev YT, create folder, copy iYTBP apk, set permissions & reboot.

Alright, good to hear it works again. Just beware that as soon as Magisk looses root randomly or it crashes accidentally, iYTBP will need a reboot to work whereas the non-root variant will work regardless of Magisk status (which makes it a tad more attractive, don't you think )
Yeah that makes sense, I've been having issues with magisk loosing root to often now... I'll give it a go...
Oh, how about blocking YouTube ads that appear from external pages? For example if i click on a video link from Facebook... It opens a browser version of YouTube and that has ads... Anyway to stop these?
Now that root on X4 is pretty solid it would be nice to see what different people use it for.
Themes? Apps that need root? Magisk modules?
Let's share some tips and tricks!
I have not rooted yet but want to know if there is some interesting customised tips for motox4
For me it was actually needed to remove operator bloatware.
But I found here the (almost) clean EU retail ROM where only Linked-in and Outlook apps are added, so it's perfectly OK for me.
So... no need for root
I reverted back to fully stock but I mainly used it for AdBlock.
i use root for adblock. if i could find a way to write a hosts without rooting id be happy
You guys using ADblock, wouldn't it be the same to use a browser with this feature built-in?
Well, that works if you don't want to block ad banners inside apps.

It's not the same as editing the host file. Many ads still get through.
Another important reason why I need root. Titanium backup.

2nd This!
Rooted for.
* No wireless display support (edit built.prop)
* Adblocking( Edit host)
* Audiomods(Viper)
* Xposed modules.
@anas214812, now that's interesting stuff! A couple of questions:
1) is that wireless display mod you refer to able to show the phone content on the TV?
2) about Xposed, do you know if GravityBox works? I'd be interested in a way to set the statusbar clock centrally aligned.
Thanks!

Bro...warranty will be voided permanently...right now there is no way relock the bootloader and most of the banking apps not working for me ?
Ah! Thanks again for the heads-up!
Now I'll think twice before rooting X4, because I use a banking app and actually care about product warranty.

On my old Moto PE, I had no issues with unlocked bootloader and Magisk for Adroid Pay or any banking apps. Are you finding differently with Moto X4 or are you not hiding root with Magisk? Does safetynet checks pass in Magisk?

When I install magisk safety net was pass and after installing xposed and its framework.zip file from magisk then safetynet failed.
But even without installing magisk just because of bootloader unlocking my banking apps won't work. Even with safetynet pass(but Google pay worked).
Seems like adaway isnt working for me. Same with Blokada.
I tried adguard and it does work, but it gives me cloudflare issues and i cant login to xda properly.
Annyone having the same issue?
Im on 10.4.6
I'm using 10.4.6.0 xiaomi.eu version and AdAway 4.2.8 and have no problems.

Try energized magisk module
Try latest AdAway (5.0.4 - you can download it from their GitHub). It works for root and non-root devices. Works great for me. I added the Energized Blu host list and I can't see a single ad.
If you are rooted and Magisk installed then why not use Magisk?
I use adguard, pretty useful and has a few more option to tweak if you know what you're doing

For Chrome and its derivatives you need additional steps to disable their built-in adblocker and to make them using standard DNS resolving mechanism. Then, AdAway or DNS66 (perhaps Blokada, too) will work for them:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=80526823&postcount=2
But adblocking highly depends on the chosen hosts sources files - e.g., Energized Pro Blue (mentioned above) works excellent for me (I use nine additional hosts sources on top of the three as default coming in AdAway)
Btw, if you use hosts source:
https://raw.githubusercontent.com/j...ter/Extension/GoodbyeAds-Xiaomi-Extension.txt
then you will need to white-list some Xiaomi URLs to be able to receive OTA updates (first URL below), connect to the public WiFi host spots (second below), or login and use your Mi account (third and fourth URLs below):
update.miui.com
connect.rom.miui.com
api.micloud.shaomi.net
sgpac.account.xiaomi.com

Same here, adguard works really well for in app ads, I have to white list games otherwise I can't claim stuff from watching ads lol
