Rooting Galaxy note5. - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi friends, My friend just got factory unlocked samsung galaxy note5.He wants to root it.I checked and read about rooting and found that odin would be the easiest way to do rooting.Right now phone is at Android 5.1.1 , baseband version-N920W8VLU1AOI1 , build number-LMY47X.N920W8VLU1AOI1.
I found odin file for this build at autoroot.chainfire.eu. But his phone is also showing update (N920W8VLU2AOK5) available.Any suggestions how should i proceed? Thanks

Update to 6.0.1 and find AUTOROOT-file for the new Version.. Note, each time you load a new Stock-FW, you loose ROOT-permissions..
But be carfeul! Do NOT root the updated Note (6.0.1.) with the AUTOROOT-file for 5.1.1. unless you want a Boot-Loop..

Thanks for the reply.
But i couldn't find auto root file for the available update (N920W8VLU2AOK5).

Is available update that i mentioned (N920W8VLU2AOK5) 6.0.1? or phone will take more updates automatically after above said update untill it reaches 6.0.1?

hi ,
No , it's still Android v5.1.1.( according to this info .) Read this about update vers.
http://www.galaxynote5update.com/ota-update-n920w8vlu2aok5-for-canadas-galaxy-note5-sm-n920w8/
If you root your device ,you won't get any further OTA updates (,for that device .!)
Also Knox will be tripped.
Warranty void etc .
If you do get a OTA ,you will/might just soft brick device...!!
Bottom line ....
when you root .You have to flash that device official Rom with Odin ( to get further updates )
I suggest you read up more about particular device ,
eg .if it has a locked bootloader .Correct rooting method for that particular .etc.
Best is if you do not understand fully ,check YouTube for an instructional video on that device .
I can "conclude" from your post /enquiries ,you need to "read" up some more ...!!
Good luck .

the thing stopping me from rooting is losing Samsung Pay - not that its here in the uk just yet!!!

[Q] Newb Question re: Rooting & ROM upgrades

Hi - I have rooted my N7000 with no problems and have CWM installed as per the instructions at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1446987.
I am new to Android (previously an IOS user) so the rooting/unrooting thing is new to me. I have searched the forums here and on android forums but most of the information I have found winds up being more advanced than the basic questions I have. Please forgive me for this basic question ahead of time.
Once rooted, do I need to manually unroot before upgrading to an official ROM? I am not interested (at this point) in flashing any custom roms - just the official ICS rom when it is released. I understand that if I accept an OTA rom upgrade, it will unroot the device. Is the only consequence of that having to re-root the device?
Thanks!
I dont know wat you make sense to follow Nook Table rooting guide instead of Rooting guide for Galaxy Note. which is sticky thread on development section.( and as much other device section i have seen, here it is most easy n state of the art guide available for note.)

- You need not to unroot to update your device
- Yes you understand right, it will unroot your device
- Re Rooting is not only consequences, Rerooting is not easy after it. b'coz newer ROM is non rootable directly.
So in case of update, you have to use CWM / Mobile Odin instead of Kies/OTA
I have not read detail on link you have mention to root your device.
I just request to check your flash counter (Boot to download mode n check it on Rt upper corner)
Your CWM is working ?
Forgive me - I copied and pasted the wrong link. It was your rooting guide that I followed. CWM is working - I have already created an image of the device as backup.
When I enter download mode, I see no mention of flash counter. Upper right corner is empty. Upper left says:
Odin Mode
Product Name: GT-N7000
Custom Binary Download: No
Current Binary: Samsung Official
Is there some concern?
Thanks again for replying! So when an official rom update is released, if I want to maintain root for the purpose of doing backups, I should not upgrade using Kies or OTA. Otherwise, if I don't care about losing root (and hope that the new ICS rom is rootable) just use the OTA method, correct?

Everything's fine with your Note - your binary counter is No (or zero), which means that your warranty is still OK should anything happen to your Note. Binary counter 1 or higher is bad news - warranty is void.

I'd forget about OTA or Kies for two reasons:
1. you lose root and all the fun it brings
2. you wait until someone (either Samsung or your provider) sees fit to deliver the update - the same update is available here a day or two after its first release. In other words, you are in better hands here at XDA.
I will stick with here then.
I am disabling Auto update under Software Updates. That will only prevent OTA rom updates won't it?
Thanks again!

Yes, it will. Welcome to the fold.
If you followed guide for note thn itz ok, b'coz that link u shown was totally wrong. I read your data regarding counter n it is perfaxt, as of now nothing to worry, just atay tuned on xda, when you want to keep root use cwm to update, otherwise kies/ota.

Why did your phone throw the custom binary by frp lock? Did you do OEM unlock first?
Sent from my SM-N920R6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
SM-N920R6 stock firmware
I grabbed firmware for the SM-920R6 from SmartSwitch so I can probably help you out. I know how you feel, it's sad how hard it is to find anything for this phone! If you need the firmware I'll have to upload it to google drive or something this evening...
Successful un-brick and root of SM-N920R6
Using the software SamFirm and manually entering in all of the information for my phone I was able to download the correct SM-N920R6 firmware.
Here is what I had to type in the SamFirm program:
Model: SM-N920R6
Region: LRA (This really isn't a "region" it's a sales code which is why it took me forever to figure out - it can be found in System/csc/customer.xml but will be the same for all Cellcom customers)
*SELECT MANUAL CHECK BOX AND ENTER THE FOLLOWING*
PDA: N920R6WWU1BPD3
CSC: N920R6LRA1BPD3
Phone: N920R6WWU1BPD3
***MAKE SURE YOU CLICK "Decrypt automatically" (check box on right side) before you download so you get the usable zip file as well (you won't need the .enc4 file it also downloads (that is the original encrypted file)).
***You'll also want to click the "Check Update" button before downloading the firmware, but you'll get the prompt to do this by the SamFirm program.
Once you have the firmware unzipped just place it in the "AP" section on the Odin program, hit start, and you're all set!
Happy un-bricking, Cellcom customers!!
Note: After your phone reboots with the stock firmware if it hangs on the screen that has a Samsung logo dimming in and out just reboot into download mode (hold power, volume down, and home button simultaneously), and then restart the phone from the download mode menu (i.e. don't go to "continue" on the download mode screen). I tried the above recovery method a few times and it only hung on this screen once, but I was able to get out of it using the method I just described without issue.

If you were frantically looking for the firmware as I was you may be telling yourself, "I'm never going to try to root this thing again!" But wait! You now have the ultimate "Un-rooting" tool at your disposal (the stock firmware!).
That being said I went further in search of achieving a successful root and..was successful! (The root achieved was using CF Auto Root which leaves the stock firmware alone. Unfortunately no custom kernels exist as of this post for this phone so this is as best we can do at the moment.
I used the file "CF-Auto-Root-nobleltespr-nobleltespr-smn920p.tar.md5" (as users pointed out above to start this thread - the "p" version works for the SM-N920R6). You just need to download that file and flash it the same way as you flashed the firmware (i.e. put it in the "AP" section of Odin and hit start. It takes a few minutes and after it's done showing all of its text as it installs the program on your phone your phone will have a black screen - don't worry it just needs to be turned on and you're rooted!

This trips knox, right? Can you still use Samsung Pay?
It does trip KNOX and as a result you cannot use Samsung Pay on the device (Even if you flash stock back Samsung Pay will forever be disabled on the device).
Its been a week since i got my note 5 sm-n920r6 , the person i bought it from told me to of a issue with it. He told me ever since update to naugat 7.0 the back button stop working so am seeking from anyone who can help me to get marshmallow 6.0 to downgrade to 6.0, please.
If someone who might still be on 6.0 on their note 5 SM-N920R6 can extract it from their phone or other means ,it would truly appreciated.
I use the samfirm to get the 7.0 firmware so i could flash to stock when i want, here is a link of the firmware for the SM-N920R6 if anyone might want it: https://mega.nz/#!IJYFEa5T

I cannot say because i didn't notice whether it was trip or not, not that it bother me if it did. But i did manage to find the marshmallow firmware and flash back to marshmallow from naugat successfully, even though it didn't fix back button and now am back on naugat firmware.

For those of us who are using this model N920R6 , i have being able to flash custom roms from the Sprint section without any issues. When i flash custom roms for other models i find i must flash the twisted kernel v2 for sprint model or your own stock kernel but even with that i have no data, so i don;t use those roms. But as for the sprint custom roms they run faultless with normal bugs that might be in a custom roms.
At first when i get this model i was piss because their is actually no support for this model until i try the sprint custom roms,it was awesome and now bit more happy.

Need Update Advice (KitKat to Lollipop)

I currently have an LG-D415 running KitKat 4.4.2 that's rooted. I've never had a need to upgrade to Lollipop 5.0 until now. I just bought a new truck that has Android Auto which requires 5.0. My phone has been giving me a message that there's a system update available for quite a while now but I have been reluctant to do it because my phone is rooted and I'm not sure what would happen. Should I just let it do the update or do I need to unroot the phone first. It's been so long I'm not even sure what method I used to root the phone.
If you have rooted phone i recomend you installing latest twrp recovery and flashing lollipop ROM for lg l90d415. the stock ROM van ne found on t
his site
OTA update will fail if device is rooted. If you want to keep root enabled, then follow lgl90 suggestion. If you remove root to update it may work but you will have to root again. A backup is always a good move.
I'm kind of a novice at this so I'm looking for the most painless method of getting Lollipop. I'm not sure I'm comfortable installing twrp and flashing the rom. Also, I've read the bootloader needs to be unlocked which it isn't. Can I use SuperSu to unroot, let the OTA update do its thing and then reroot?
the bootloader is unlocke by deafult on lg l90d415 all you habe to do is download flashify app from play store download the latest twrp for d415 and wipe system, dalvikcache and cache the flash te lollipop stock tom by going to install and chouse the rom file where you have downloaded it inernal or external sd card and the swipe to flash the firsr boot will take maximaly 5-10 minuts .. lollipop is waaay diferent than the kitkat thats why will take to boot longer
So I unrooted the phone downloaded the OTA update and tried installing it. It made it halfway through then the phone restarted without completing the update. The phone is still at 4.4.2 and I no longer get any message to update. When I check for updates it thinks its up to date. When I tried manually updating using the LG Mobile Support Tool it initially said an update was available then changed to the phone is up to date. Why does it think the phone is up to date when obviously it's not?

zagreb - as I stated I'm a novice so I chose the path that I thought would be the easiest. My phone was fully charged so I do not believe that was the reason for the update not completing. Is there a thread or link you know of that provides a step by step (from beginning to end) tutorial of what you're proposing. Thanks for your help.

S5 rooted help

current software 4.4.2 what's the best way to update to update the software to latest new to root
What phone model? G800F, G800H, etc?
Most versions have official Lollipop from Samsung, you can update it using OTA, no root needed and it won't trip Knox warranty. If your model doesn't have a version for your particular country then you can use Odin to flash a compatible version (same model, another country) and it should keep your warranty.
If you want Marshmallow then there is no official version yet. You can get a custom ROM, then you will need TWRP either using Odin or rooting first.
Thanks for the reply ! I'm a idiot ... I have an s4 mini lol

If you meant GT-i9195 or anything other than G800-something then probably you're in the wrong forum, you will get better help in the appropriate forum for your device.
Secondly, if you've used KingRoot then either stick to KingUser app (SuperSU won't work) or you need to replace it completely either using an app or some script, both don't work always...

Question Any issues with changing CSC from CHN to XAR.

I just purchased a Galaxy Tab S8 (SM-X700 WiFi) in China and I want to replace the chinese firmware with US one. Are there any special considerations I need to know or can I just follow the rooting guide in the current post? Thanks!

You don't need to root to change firmware. Just re-flash your device with US firmware and if you want you can change code as well so it keeps getting US firmware updates instead of Chinese ones.
Rooting it will void warranty all together since rooting needs bootloader unlock and that trigers KNOX permanent and apps like samsung pass, secret folder will stop working permanently as well. Since they need KNOX to work, but since KNOX is broken/permanently disabled, then they won't work.
Thanks for the advice and information! I was hoping there was an option to update the region without rooting, but I wasn't sure. Cheers!

No problem, reason why you can flash other region is because those firmware are counted as stock. Only difference in them would be some apps that are preinstalled and such.
So as long it's stock firmware you don't need to touch the bootloader.
Might not be necessary to even flash a new firmware and loose data.
Use this tool: https://samfw.com/blog/samfw-frp-tool-1-0-remove-samsung-frp-one-click
Under adb commends get a list of CSCs, see if the one you want is there. Then you can go back to the tool's main screen and change your CSC. Takes 10 seconds + a reboot, no data loss.
Worked for me both on my Tab S8+ and S22+.
