Anybody interested in Ubuntu Touch for N6 still? - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm currently in the process of attempting to build Ubuntu Touch for the Nexus 6, I'll continue if there is any interest. If not, I will probably stop.

I'm interested

Ok, will continue. Currently working on doing kernel stuff.

Tried building it a while back, couldn't figure it out to save my life. What version of android are you going to build it over?
btw; INTERESTED!

Interested!

I'm going to try to just do whatever works. Trying to build a kernel from source, as Ubuntu Touch's stock kernels are all based on 4.4 or something like that, and the N6 was released on 5.0. Although I could build it on 4.4 if I really tried.

Go ahead bro

interested as well! I used to have it on my N5

I'm down for testing or whatever you need

Currently trying to build my ugly, patchwork masterpiece. Hopefully it works.

And quick question. If my "throw it at the wall and see if it sticks" port succeeds, should I put it on General or Android Development? Because Ubuntu Touch is not Android, but I don't know if to put it in General.

Probably Android. Technically it has an android base, no different then MIUI.

Pretty much the reason why I gave up. I had all the pieces, but no real way to mash 'em together.

libcameraservice seems to love stopping me. .-.

Interested. Thanks for giving it a shot!

I am interested. Had fun messing with it in the past.

[ROM/AOSP] Cyaonbread - The Best of CM6 and 7 All Rolled in to One - v1 soon

With the buildbots not up yet, I've been working on a little project in secret for a while. I call it Cyanobread. My plan here is to make a CM7 that has all of CM 6.1's bells and whistles before the CM7 team does. Some patches I will probably submit, and some will be only for this ROM as they go against the ideas of what Cyanogen wants. I haven't decided yet if I will keep this updated once the buildbots come back. If it divulges from the CM7 project significantly than probably.... otherwise I will just keep this as a mod for a few patches you can add to CM7.
My philosophy behind doing this ROM is the fact that I love CM6 and have used the nightlies as my daily driver and was very dissapointed 7 wasn't up on the buildbots.
Even though this is mostly a CM7Src ROM, please report any bugs here and I will do my best to either report them to the CM Team or fix them myself if I can. Same thing goes for any features you'd like to see added.
My approach to deving is a very collaborative one. Invisiblek, jladronka and DS36 will be helping me with this project. If any other devs would like to help, please shoot me a PM. The more the merrier, I really want to see a nice group project out of this.

You could also, you know, test it out yourself.
Just saying...
Interesting (but then again, I'm a ROM hua), I'm on board.
I'm also interested in Cyanocomb when it's ready. ;-)
sounds interesting, i'll definitely try it
Looking forward to it.....I know I should not ask, but.....ETA?
lol I dont go by the No ETA rule so long as you dont mind if you're wrong.
well this has been an in work project for a few weeks... finally had a full compile this morning but was missing some apps.... so i decidedd to make clean and do it again... first time my laptop blue screened, then it hibernated because I forgot to plug it in.... I'm thinking within a few hours.
I'm looking forward to this.
Back in my Blackberry days we used to call these Hybrids. Some of the most functional, stable BB OSs were patched together from different OSs or even bits and pieces from different phones.
Of course, some hybrids were the biggest train wrecks also...
I have high hopes for this. Good luck!
Heh, FrankenROM.
sorry for not getting this out tonight... I had a few minor setbacks. Teaser installer video coming in a few minutes. Right now, it is completely stock CM, and you can think of the teaser as a .5 of sorts. v1 will be out tomorrow I promise. Very minor tweaks that I am going to do to start out with.
Excuse my ignorance, whats the point? Isn't CM7 the best of 6 and 7 all rolled into one sprinkled over some Gingerbread?

This ^^ I'm running gridlock's CM 7 latest build and so far, it's got all the mods that CM6.# has, on GB.
What exactly are you planning on adding that it doesn't already have?

Cause I went from Cm6.1 to to 7 up to the latest 32, and there's nothing at all that has made me say "Oh damn, I miss that from CM6". CM7 has TONS more tweaks, and a pretty bad ass music player.
Glad to see I'm not the only one wondering what the point of this is...
when i started this project that wasn't the case. a lot o the goodies in CM6 were missing... I plan to add my own little touch to it and hopefully diverge from the CM project slightly. Video's not going to happen, having some issue with the touchscreen....will look at it in the morning.
hmmm... no issue with the touch screen... but somehow this compiled lacking a keyboard... blah... i was hopeful... oh well... will deal wiith it in the morning

[Q] Android on HP Veer 4G

XDA-developers has Beta MIUI.us Tenderloin HP TouchPad 2.3.7 by scott951 done, does anybody know if i can use this ROM to install android on HP Veer 4G?
I tried with alpha releases and nothing.
I'he tried
Nothing happens
Roms designed for one device will almost never work on another. If you want Android on your veer, someone will need to create it from scratch. The touchpad stuff wont be of any use.

I'd love it if someone put 'Droid on the Veer. It would increase its use to me exponentially.
Now that I have Lollipop on my TouchPad I'd love to put it on my Veer.
I have found it has been put on the Veer with some functionality....but no phone. Kind of useless without phone.

Thats all Folks!

And that is all folks! I hearby declare the Dell Streak 7 dead. Unable to boot KitKat for Dell Streak 7.
Due to our older kernel, GCC-4.7 results in a no boot after compile. I've switched to 4.6 but then KitKat fails to compile.

Hi Giveen,
very sorry to hear that, but to be honest I expected this somehow. It doesn't look like DerArtem will ever compile a newer kernel for us. That's what I read from your posts over the last months, and that's the part that made me expecting this. It's a real pity, because the Streak 7 itself isn't a bad piece of hardware, even today, I think. But it never was really suppported by Dell as it would have deserved it. And with Kitkat it might have been revived once again, as KK is optimized for low ram devices. (I also own a Galaxy S1 phone, where the wizards/devs of XDA refuse to let it die since years and this old phone becomes better and better with every new Android version. KK is in alpha status and is already doing quite well on this phone...). As you see, I love to see getting the best out of my old devices
Saying all that, the higher I appreciate all the time and work (blood, sweat and tears) you and the other few devs and helpers here invested over the last years for our DS 7.
I personally moved on to a Nexus 7 (2012) 32GB. It's a good tablet and rigth now a quite good bang for the buck, as it's successor is on the market. My N7 now has more RAM, faster CPU, faster GPU, better screen, better battery lifetime, higher resolution etc. as the old DS 7. But it has also it's drawbacks, even compared with my old DS 7 (don't laugh!). e.g.I miss the SD-Slot, the 5 MP camera on the back, the stereo speakers. The DS 7 is heavier, ok, but on the other side it feels also a little more valuable than the N7 when I hold it in my hands. I know I could have bought some another device with all my missed whistles and bells. But money is an argument for me and the chance to get future developments and custom roms is another. So the N7 was quite a good compromise all in all. But as long as my DS 7 still works ok, I will continue using it too. It's still too good to throw it away, and nobody will buy it on ebay anyway. Maybe I'll give it someday to my little nephew as a gaming console.
Giveen, thank you so much for the past efforts you made! Without you the DS 7 would have been died already long ago.
One last question: Will you still continue your work on the CM 10.1 ROM or will you give up the DS 7 development completely?
Regards,
Michael
Personally I am looking at a Dell Venue 7 or 8.
I may look at CM10.1 again and see if I can work out the kinks but I am really focused on my school and my security training.
Just out of curiosity Why another Dell... any other tablets have your interest
Price and it is using an Atom chip which is common with quite a few tablets so I would have something to work with.

Thanks for the reply was just wondering if it would be easy to develop on since you know so much about the streak
Poor Streak will never feel the joy of a fully working os, as stock hc is as buggy as an anthill. Thx for the patience anyway, giveen and all other devs working on our poor man's tablet
In the end it seems that to buy this tablet was a very bad decision. The original HC ROM is terrible and the CM versions never worked completely (Many thanks to giveen and others for making the tablet work at least partially).
I'm thinking about trying the old official 2.x firmware. Does it work reliably? Does anybody have any experience with it?

I tried some 2.x recently and I thought it was also unusable since a lot of apps are not supported.
Too bad that everybody stopped caring for that little bugger. Thanks to giveeen and all the others that were working on a good rom, right now 4.2.2 from giveeen seems to work best on my Streak..

Hi biert87. I use the streak 7 (European / 3G) as navigation device on 3.5. Device is rooted with cwm. I guess I have already downloaded everything necessary. I am though not really sure how to install 4.2.2. There are just too many posts on this topic. The more I read the more I get confused. Can you give me a clear and short hint? Thank you in advance !

Hi Wolfgangt,
inside giveeens latest 4.2.2 package there is a file called "Install Android 4.2.2.bat" - just open a command terminal in there and run it (if you are on windows).
Before running it you need to put your Streak into nvflash mode - when its turned off you need to press both vol plus and vol down and connect your usb cable. Streak will stay dark but your hardware keys will light up. This is when you can run that batch.

[Q] What is CM doing?

I tried to flash CM on my N6 and it bootlooped. So I got to checking, since going public, Cyanogenmod has not put out anything but nightlies since cm10. What is going on? Why start up an actual company if you're just going to pump out nightlies from a generator?

This is one of the reasons why many users have jumped ship for other ROMs.
I have tried CM over the years on several devices and I've never found them to be most stable ROM out there. maybe it's just me but I tend to avoid them now.

They are not as separate as they are trying to imply. cyngn is the "business" side that CONTROLS the "code" side. Cyanogenmod is the *pretend* community side. The relationship between the two is parasitic. Nothing goes into cyanogenmod without going THROUGH their gerrit server, which is wholly under the control of employees of cyngn.
Exactly. Thank you. CyanogenMod is open source community driven, Cyanogen Inc is a business.
Would you say Fedora Linux is the same as Red Hat?
As for the OP, CM12 wasn't around long enough to go milestone yet. They release a stable variant when they are no major bugs and all the *extras* are included. This takes a while.

No variety in ROM's

I came to Nexus from an HTC One. I know that fact that the main thing with the Nexus is to have a simple, fast, stable and latest vanilla Android, but Im getting bored All the ROM;s look pretty much the same and most of the launchers/themes I used were either poorly designed, slowing down the phone, or draining the battery.
With the HTC I was able to switch to vastly different ROMs (Vanilla, HTC Sense, MIUI, Ubuntu etc.) whenever I want to experience different ways of using Android but with the Nexus i feel its very stale.
I searched the forums and there are no other options. Any idea why? Or are there and i'm too dumb to find them?
Well porting something like sense or touchwiz would be way too much work due to chunks of them being closed source. We could probably have miui or ubuntu though, would just need someone to be interested in doing it.
Imo there is a certain group of people who want to flash other devices in order to get an aosp like experience. It's these people who the nexus line appeals to.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Kind of surprised there is no Ubuntu port (at least that I'm aware of). MIUI is too far behind. Last I checked it's still KK based, so we don't have a base to use, and besides, we are playing around with M, so almost two named releases ahead.

very easy solution. make your own rom if you are bored with the n6 rom options. no one is stopping you, nor hindering any if your creativity. if you dont want to, then you need to apologize to all if our developers that are here on the n6, for calling out their "worthless" roms. launchers/themes have nothing to do with it, as they are different developers. again, your option is to use your own creativity and make a creative rom, or be a good soul and appreciate what we already have.
It's funny because I saw this thread title and thought "no variety in threads". I come from a Samsung and HTC background and we never had these threads, but now I see this same thread being posted every week.
Just a case of "should have done your research before buying". Personally, I find a wider variety here than either from my HTC days or my short stint with LG.
