Well, THAT happened 10 hours ago........
The launch for the S5 came and my enjoyment faded pretty quickly. You can see from my track record in my signature that I've been a pretty loyal customer of Samsung for quite some time now, and this may be the first Galaxy launch that I won't have a pre-order in the system. Other than stepping away from the Galaxy line to pick up the Atrix 4G, the first mass produced phone with a fingerprint scanner, coincidentally, I've enjoyed only Samsung phones for the last 4 years. The "premium version" of the S5 was supposed to be 5th in line, what with the 20MP camera, metal body, G-Note 3 battery size, 5.25" screen - you've seen it all and read it all, it didn't show up today. Now unless Samsung is about to pull the biggest stunt they've ever pulled, the Unpacked5 event is in the books and we're not getting anything more than what we got today.
Is there any positive that came out of this event? Sure! USB 3.0 is a big thing for me as I have lots of 3.0 gear and want that from my next phone, it's dust and water resistant, cool fingerprint scanner providing it works flawlessly unlike the one on the iThing, updated TouchWiz which (try not to judge) I actually like a little bit, the wearables, the bigger focus on health, better processor, camera, and connectivity, but then comes the let downs, especially for S4 owners. Same 1080p screen at almost the same size, same 2GB of memory, almost the exact same front camera, soon to be the same OS (again, I like TW so I'm sticking it out on 4.3 until the TW 4.4.2 comes out), same plastic body that I don't necessarily mind, but would have appreciated a little change other than just putting dimples in the back cover, and probably worst of all to me, they're offering it in a 16GB format again after what they just did to us who pre-ordered and / or early adopted the S4, sticking us with next to nothing for internal space because they believe everyone has kids and needs to have likely a ton of space dedicated to a kid mode with pre-installed games and crap. I'm single and not looking for that anytime soon!!! It's like they claimed to listen to their customers but only those who are married, have children, want a "modern glam look," whatever the hell that means, and work out enough to bring their phone with them while exercising!
Damn that's a lot of negatives so far. So what can Samsung do between now and launch to earn my money short of releasing their ultra premium version that was supposed to exist but doesn't, and calling this one the S5 Neo? Let's take a look, and please, feel free to help me add to this list!
Ship the phone with an unlocked bootloader - I know, fat chance, right? But if you don't want people complaining about lack of storage, let us kill it off as we see fit! I also know it isn't up to Samsung on this, the carriers are the ones being douchebags about it, but Samsung put their foot down with them previously by stopping them from dictating all the individual revisions when they launched the SIII, making them all the same shape and size, so why can't they force their hand on this in the sake of making even the smallest group of their customers happy - those that truly use the phone for what it was meant for!
Negate the 16GB version - this is obvious, why the hell is this even a thing anymore with Samsung.... just get rid of it if you're not going to slim down this ridiculously large ROM of yours! Ship with the 32GB at minimum and announce the 64GB as well. iThings do this as a standard now, and while iSheep love to keep their music on their device and we have this little thing called external storage and another little thing called Google Music, we don't have to, but seriously, cut the crap and ditch the 16GB model!
Allow us to remove certain features we just aren't going to use, EVER - as I stated already, I don't have kids and don't need a Kids Mode. If you aren't going to let us root the thing AND aren't going to launch it with more than 16GB, let me get rid of the damn Kids Mode. Or the health features. Or anything else I decide useless or unnecessary. When looking at pics of the camera settings on the S5, I'm able to download more features as I see fit - why not make some of this crap downloadable and not don't ship it with the device? Why not make an Aroma-like installer when you first boot it and say "hey, would you like all of this crap or just some of it?" like any PC software does when it installs something - Typical or Custom installation. Sounds like I'm asking for a lot here, but really, I'm asking to not be forced a lot that I really won't use. And before you comment that if I don't need it, don't buy it in the first place, there are so many things I love about my S4 and TouchWiz that I'm not planning to part with in order to have "a phone," my N7 has a purpose and it isn't so I can keep the screen on when I need it just by looking at it. It does great for playing movies on a trip but not for letting me change the channel of my big TV when I want to watch a blockbuster movie....
Ship with at least the S805 processor for crying out loud - if you're not going to blow us away with something new and powerful, at least ship it with the very latest processor this time from Qualcomm. The 800 has been out for months, the 801 is obviously an incremental update over the 800, and the 805 isn't that much better, but at least give us the goods instead of just going along with the same processor found in the N5 and G-Note 3. I don't think we've heard which one for sure will be included, but from what I've read, so far they say it's the 800 or the 801. EDIT - it's the 801, confirmed by Qualcomm....
Include wireless charging in the box - I shouldn't have to say this, wireless charging is now old technology, the SIII had the capability but not the attention or love needed for Samsung to just release the official cover, the S4 cover took 3 months to post online for sale, and with all the competition shipping their phones with it included, why aren't we able to get it without paying $50+ for it? I used a 50% off coupon to get it for $25, but that's $25 more than I should have spent after being let down on a promise that the SIII was supposed to be able to do it on a phone with nearly useless internal storage....
Sell us some legit accessories this time, namely a car dock - I'm always impressed when people recognize me from my review on the only working car dock for the S4 since Samsung decided to screw around with the whole thing and make my Infuse dock useless. It worked on the Skyrocket and SIII, and would have fit the S4 except it wasn't possible to get the thing working properly by charging and outputting dock audio on it, so it's collecting dust in a box right now. Sure, I get it, you want to sell me something new instead of letting me use the same one for my last phone, and that's different than what you are doing (or didn't do?) with the wireless charging cover, but in this situation, you're not even selling me one! The S4 sold tens of millions of devices, did you stop and think that maybe ONE of them would be going in a car and being used for playing music or navigating that owner safely from one place to another?

That's all I got for now, I'm sure we can come up with more and while I highly doubt Samsung is listening to people like me, one of their 200M customers (I'd like to think I counted 4 times for buying 4 iterations of the Galaxy line), there's always a chance someone is listening. I bet they'll listen when they're trying to figure out why the sales figures are going to be monumentally lower this go-round, that's for sure!!!
A note to fanboys of all kinds, Samsung, HTC, Nokia, iThing, etc - let's keep it clean here, please. You haven't heard me bash anyone else here, even Samsung really, so please don't get this thread locked on me. I'm sure you have witty comments like Nokia and HTC have today, with their "Samesung," "Buyers Remose," and even the most original ones like telling me that you're disappointed or this phone is ugly.... As if we haven't seen those comments before. Be original if Samsung isn't, post something relevant to the discussion if you're going to post at all! I don't waste my time on writing this stuff to insult others, so don't do it to insult me. If you were never considering buying it, you don't have any reason to comment on here because nothing you're going to say will come across as helpful to myself or others. If you were considering buying it or even, dare I say switching from another brand, or actually will be buying this phone - let's discuss intelligently your reasons why!

In Slovenia in past month we have major electric blackdown becouse of mother nature - no internet no nothing.. but FM radio did work.. on my S2 I could still listen what is happening, but on newer device.. bljah.. must have tool which cost them 1 euro cent per device..

I agree with all you say. Particularly about wireless charging, and accessories which get launched with fanfare and then never see the light of day. The other thing they could do is to put one of the new gear items in the box too. That would be a good sweetener. Lol.

How do you know it doesn't ?
Two points here:
1. I see you are American, and that in the US the carriers **** in their customers' heads when it comes to freedom. The international S4 has an unlocked bootloader, it has been like that since the original S.
2. The Snapdragon 805 isn't available yet, sadly.
And why isn't 2GB of RAM enough? I have 300+ apps here, 9 accounts syncing and available RAM never goes below 700MB.
I'm going to point something out to everyone here that wants Samsung to get rid of security features such as locked bootloaders or Knox.
We are the minority. Do you Expect Samsung to tailor to us and risk the average consumer's information and safety so people can run an AOSP build or a custom kernel?

While I'm not excusing the US carriers for doing this, but why do you think they try to steer people away from rooting and unlocking the bootloader? People mess up, brick their phone, and then try to do a warranty claim on them. They're protecting their profits, and as a business you cannot blame them for that. Anyone else here would do the same thing to retain profits. And what do you mean "use the phone for what it was meant for?" The phone is meant to be a mobile multimedia cellular device, which in fact still does on the software it ships with no problem.

I do agree with this, I don't see too much point of the 16gb version. Still at least gives you a start of 10gb of storage at least.

You can disable features you don't need. But just because you decide a feature you think is useless or unnecessary, does not translate to everyone else will think this too. I like the kids mode feature, I've got kids and nephews that get my phone somehow all the time.(Anyone with kids can attest to that too! ) I'm sure people will love this feature.

This is Qualcomm's area right here, ARM cpus are following the development of x86 cpus. Meaning it's reached a point now where development for ARM cores is slowing down, tremendously. We probably won't see any groundbreaking ARM cpu's come out for maybe at least a year or so now, took x86 cpus years to show good and cost effective performance gains.

I do agree with this, but also at the same time there are 100s of other companies making accessories that Samsung does not make.
Samsung is not going to tailor the phone just for one person or a small group, they're doing it for what they believe are the best choices for their devices. Looking at their track record of the Galaxy line up, I'd say they've got it down pretty good.
Why do u need a 2k screen on a 5" device? It eats battery life, it bogs down cpu and gpu performance for something that your eyes can't notice. I cant even see a pixel on my s4.

When kitkat was being written all the engineers had to use a smart phone with only 512 mb of RAM.
This will be moot tho with TouchWiz which is the most bloated god awful software on Android. 2gb IS enough yet the s4 still suffered from lag.
With the newer processors not being available yet Samsung should have focused on design. They put zero effort into that. This will be their first flop in the galaxy line. And by flop I mean by their standards. It will still sell millions.

I have minimal lag here, but even Nexus can lag, it's not just TW or Sense.

this is so true. people just want a better spec sheet not realizing going above 1080p will actually lower benchmarks particularly with the s800 and 801 being the only SoC available now. To get something you probably wont even notice you will be sacrificing just about everything else performance wise.

Come on It was a pretty common bug on the s4. I have a Samsung tab note 10.1 and it lags considerably.
I've had numerous HTC phones over the years and sense has been toned down quite a bit. sense 3.0 was a system draining nightmare.
I really don't think you can compare a straight android ROM to A samsung rom and say with a straight face this makes no difference on performance or lag.
Just compare the size of a nexus 7 rom to any s4 rom.

Sure, the Note 10.1 is slow, but the problem isn't how light or heavy the ROM is, the lag happens because the Java-based Android Runtime isn't a optimized as iOS, for example.

It's actually dalvik at runtime. Dalvik virtual machine and kitkat is optimized quite well.
When you add a huge amount of code on top of that of course it will change the performance.

Actually that's a matter of opinion. My nexus 7 2013 and HTC one run as well as any iOS device I've played with. And they're of course other factors such iOS locked down system, boring home screen, no widgets, tiny screen etc.

Hello from North Carolina, US.
After carrying the Note 2 for two years, I am over the large phone form factor and was considering the Z3c back when it was released. But, I'm on Verizon (CDMA) and it just wasn't a good time to shift to TMobile. My Note 2 died, and I started carrying my wife's old Galaxy S3, which confirmed my preference for a smaller handset. Since my contract with Verizon is over in June, I figured I would carry the S3 until then, see what phones were announced at MWC and make my next phone decision based on that.
Frankly, for my use cases... MWC was MEH.
The S6/edge and HTC One M9 are both lovely phones, but I don't feel like they meet my needs as well as the Z3c. With the Z3c, I love the small form factor, the waterproofiness, the battery and the dedicated shutter button. Also, an S6 with as much storage as the SD card I already own will be hundreds of dollars more expensive than the Z3c.
That said, is it crazy to buy a 6 month old phone? Considering my use cases (primarily utilitarian - music, email, rss, news/weather, social, navigation, camera - no processor intensive games) and considering how surprisingly well the S3 is still running with these use cases at nearly three years old, I am thinking the Z3c may still be a good fit for me. And, I don't want to wait as long as the rumors are saying I would need to wait for the Z4 series (autumn 2015).
What about you, would you still buy the Z3c today? Do you think, based on how I've described my uses, that it would be a good fit for me? Is there another small form factor device I should be considering? Should I suck it up and wait for autumn and the Z4's?

You're using your wife's S3 which is over 3 years old, so calling a 6 month old phone 'old' is kind of bs (No offense @ all)
As for the Z4, well.... there is no word about a Z4C and based on what Sony previously did, there shouldn't be a Z4C, but a Z5C (if ever).
The Z3C is a great phone, besides the occasional build flaws and bad camera under low light conditions.

None taken. The last 5 phones I've bought for myself or my wife have been purchased within 2 weeks of release, sometimes by me standing in line on release day. I buy them early, use them for 2 years when I can contractually upgrade and get a new one and start the cycle over. I typically use a phone for two years and it starts to feel "old" to me at ~18-20 months when a couple new cycles of phones and android versions have been released. My concern is not that the phone is "old" now, rather that, being 6 months old now, it may start to feel old at 12-14 months rather than 18-20.
Btw, I followed your photo link from another post of yours. Like you comments here, your sample photos are really helpful.

My concern is not that the phone is "old" now, rather that, being 6 months old now, it may start to feel old at 12-14 months rather than 18-20.

Well I don't know, in terms of specs I don't see much changing any time soon, unless all manufacturers decide to make 64bit phones or use a new type of battery that either lasts long and/or charges super fast.
In the end as long as you're doing 'normal' things the phone should be your companion for at least 2 years without you really noticing a difference between your phone and other people's.
Z3 and Z3 compact are best options on android right now.
implying you don't want a phablet.
new phones like GS6 and ONE M9 are cool but you can find a Z3 for 500€/$ and a Z3C for 400, (gs6 and one ~750$)
you'll have same software 5.0.2 with better UI, and better battery, only the camera will be a bit behind but still excellent.
so unless you have money to waste just go for it it's a good deal
I love my z3 compact but if I were to buy a new phone now, I would get the galaxy s6 edge.
The biggest issue I have with the z3c is the speaker. Currently if I am in a semi loud surrounding, I can hardly hear the other person on the line.

As usual it depends on what you need. Me personally there is no other phone than the Z3c atm. Size/hardware/design... its perfect for me.
So if you're looking for a smaller phone (one hand use) with excellent battery life and fast hardware just go for it there is nothing that comes even close in that department.
I'm very torn right now, I'm frustrated that I would have to use the bloated stock software to get decent camera quality (no barrel distortion and better low light) and that CM12, while it runs decently doesn't support the features locked away by DRM. I'm contemplating reverting back to a Nexus 5...I think my biggest issue would be the camera, I thought it would be superb but in reality it only matches my nexus considering the distortion. And Sony's DRM and bootloader locking nonsense seems ridiculous to me.

That's easy...the hard part is losing all the customizations. I went to stock 5.0.2 rooted, system R/W support isn't there, I lose all sorts of little features like expanded desktop, quick unlock, navigation customization...

Rw is already fixed though you wont like the process if you want to Stay on locked bl. Those features will be implemented either by Sony or more likely xposed working. Just give it some time

Pretty sure Sony is done with us after this update, minus maybe a couple security patches there won't be any new features. I already tried CM12 for a good month, just couldn't stand the camera and the bugs were a bit too much for a DD. Hoping for xposed and working recoveries on lollipop...that's about all I can do right now.

Jeah it will Come soon enough, I mean lolli was just released and recoveries,custom Kernels and a working xposed will all make their way on this device sooner or later. Just play the waiting game... again

Let's see... The Xperia Z that has been released for about 2 years also received the Lollipop update, why would you think that Sony would stop update a phone that's just been out 6 month's. Can you please tell me your logic?

Nice Features
There are some things which are so nice. Most of the new phones arent waterproof. Phones are getting bigger and bigger. But the z3c is smaller but quite good.
I certainly would buy the Z3C again, the biggest gripe I have is the lack of Quality Case choices. Great phone IMO, size, battery, speed and takes above average pictures(Auto mode) and if you take the time to use the manual settings it can take excellent pictures.
So far, Sony Z3C has no real competition. In android world. I just bought one.

Well with the persisting rumors that Sony is either scaling back or dropping their mobile division...I just have a gut feeling.
And I guess I changed my mind. Just ordered a replacement Nexus 5 like my old one. I will miss the size and it is a sharp looking phone, but the broken features that can never be fixed (mostly camera stuff) and the DRM nonsense really turned me off of this phone. I may be an oddball but I just don't like that I'm missing all the little customizations and things on CM12 when I'm on stock, and Xposed will probably only fix about half of those features. Miss Privacy Guard, Quick unlock, all that good stuff. And I just don't like the UI design choices. Plus all the no-name "device reporting" and "anonymous reporting" services running in the background that can't be disabled.
I'm sure in a few months CM12 will have the microphone & other issues ironed out, but what's the point of having a 20MP camera that has distortion and poor image quality that (from what I've read) can never be fixed in an AOSP rom?
I would recommend it to my fiancee that doesn't use her phone for much more than texting and Youtube, but not for a tinkerer like myself.
FOR SURE! Unless you want to wait for a Z4 Compact to even be announced, and then eventually come out, I'd say the Z3 Compact remains the best phone at it's size from anyone, still to this day. The Galaxy S5 Mini just came out recently, and it's a Snapdragon 400! The Z3 Compact has a great, waterproof build, MicroSD, Camera Button, and 801 processor. Nothing else comes close unless you're okay with a leviathan of a phone I love my Z3 Compact and really do not desire a new phone or ever again something larger...
Would definitely still buy again. Just ticks so many boxes that other devices don't (size, speed, battery, microSD, camera). It really has no competition. I'm not sure we'll see a Z4 compact at all - doubt z3 compact is a big seller and with Sony in such a mess, they may just focus on the Z4. If that happens, we're in bad shape for fully spec'd < 5" Android devices. The good news is that the hardware is advancing so slowly now, the z3c will probably be a viable platform for quite awhile.
My Galaxy S4 (two generations old!) still runs CM12 perfectly fine. It's an SD600!
Working 6 months with the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 (910F), 5 Years with Samsung
I am not a regular user / buyer. I have many smartphones and when I like a brand, i am buying everything i can from the same brand.
Until 5 years ago, I was working only with HTC. I bought 8 HTC smartphones.
And then I discovered Samsung.
From then, I bought 10 Samsung smartphones, 3 Samsung Smart TVs and more.
But my passion to Samsung started to crack, and all because of my Note 4 issues.
When I received the Note 4, it was amazing - excellent battery life, everything worked perfect.
And then came updates...
After the first update, the Note 4 started to have bluetooth issues - I need to make restart twice a day in order to work with my bluetooth headsets (even with Samsung headsets).
With more updates, the battery life dropped dramatically. After the Lollipop update, the battery is dropping 3-5% per hour, without using it. Android OS and bluetooth dropped the most.
Dont tell me to make hard reset - I made it twice.
Its time to leave Samsung and work with a company that can give me what Samsung gave me until two years ago.
Samsung will need to convince me that it improved before I will return.
using bluetooth everyday with my car audio, and bluetooth headset never had any problem.
battery life never changed for me with any update. 6 hours sot generally.

The exynos is not any better, I had it for nearly a month, but returned it yesterday. Just like the op, I became a fan of samsung since I bought the S3 because of the removeable back and exchangeable battery, memory card support, and of course the tons of roms here on XDA. I was a HTC user (Desire and Desire HD). Now Samsung seems to be going that route, so it is time for me to look for alternatives, but can't find one I like at the moment. Worse comes to worse when there is no manufacturer making removable battery and sd card support, I will not buy samsung. I would rather but a NEXUS phone which will have updates from google. Heck my dauthers' 3 year old Nexus 7 toys are still running 5.1.1 without me doing anything.
I understand what you're saying. I have the Note 4 now, before that a few Nokias, an LG G3, Sony Xperia Z2, and before that, the Note 2 (best phone I had owned). I'm very disappointed in Samsung's issues. If Samsung doesn't fix this issue before I get a new phone in a few months probably, I'll ditch Samsung for good. Battery life is horrible. Camera is good in AWESOME lighting conditions, and in EVERY OTHER condition, it's SOOO grainy and terrible! Focusing isn't good. My 2013 Nokia 1520 took MUCH better pictures than this Note 4, except in good lighting. Also, 4 different roms (all official) and I still have that STUPID multitasking button delay. My Samsung tablet from 2 years ago is MUCH faster at bringing up the multitasking screen! 2GB ram and SD800 processor w/ same resolution!
I really hate to say it, but I am very disappointed in all the money I spent in this phone. I should have returned it when I had the chance ... Xperia Z3, or Z4 now... LG G4... Nexus 6. I know EVERY device has its issues, but I always need 2 things: Battery life and good camera performance. From ALL the reviews, the Note 4 had these... I really can't trust reviewers on youtube... I guess they must praise the Samsung devices or else they won't get review units before release... Meh....
I really hope Samsung can fix these issues....

No, even before updates ruined it, it was buggy from the get go. For example, I had the GPS tag problem right out of the box. When trying to take a picture, sometimes it wouldn't lock on to the GPS coordinates in time. Other phones will continue to try to find the GPS lock and then add it to the image a few seconds after the image is taken, but not the Note 4! That was a really big issue that was fixed with the update to Lollipop, but it brought along with it a whole slew of other issues. So no, updates didn't ruin it, updates fixed some things and broke others.
Returning back is not always smooth.
Any way - some of the updates are security updates so its a problematic not to update.
Yeah, I guess that will be my first and last samsung phone. Some months back I was unsure to get the nexus 6 or samsung note 4, because I wanted a bigger phone. Wish I had waited for the nexus 6...
Problem was not the hardware, that is really high quality and everything works like it should. Also batterie is fine, in most cases it was something else that kept the phone from sleeping, like google+.
Really awesome is the QI Case from samsung, so I can load wireless and it's protected (great quality!). Also the small window with infos
But the downside is the software and the efuse. I had many phones in my hands till now (it in our company) from mid/high end android, apple, tablets etc.
I NEVER had a software on a phone that pissed me off like samsung did. Compared to my nexus 4 I had before, the performance was abysmal. I knew TW was known to be slow, but I mean the cpu is fast as hell, 3 GB RAM etc. - that should count for something right? There is so much crap preinstalled and badly coded, it hurts.
Never wanted to root my phone, but I really needed to do it. With a custom mod and kernel it was a bit faster, also lolipop was better then 4.4.4 in subjective speed. But when I installed CM on the phone, I saw for the first time WHAT this piece of fine hardware can actually do. I also installed the same apps and no difference in speed. It was nice and fast like my nexus 4. Too bad I had to kick CM because of the bugs still around at that time. So it really is the software, nothing else.
My next phone will be a nexus again or - if good - something from LG, Sony or a Google play edition. If I could I would change it right now for a lg g4 or a nexus 6.
If samsung want's to be a real opponent to apple, they have to keep the changes to android at the lowest possible (like CM) and everything else as app. That would fasten updates by a wide margin. Also a business and private user brand with and without knox. And some kind of software selection system, that disables services or deinstalls them, if not needed like you won't need samsung link without a samsung tv.
I'm looking into getting this phone, but wanted actual owners inputs on the phone.
I bought a g5 plus on black friday at bestbuy, and used it for about a week and a half. I has issues with calls were cutting out, as if I had dropped call, but if I waited long enough, the call would resume fine, but the other side could not here me and eventually hung up without waiting long enough. This is a known issue on lenovo forums, as others have the same issue with the g5 plus.
I'd like people with say a month or better to chime in on this if you would.
I've watched numerous videos on the 5s plus and read thru countless reviews on it as well, and the biggest complaint seems to be with the camera and the depth feature, both of which have terrible lag time and wait time.
I've also sifted thru lenova forums to see if there are any issues, and the only other issue that I would call major is the screen cracked when it was not dropped or anything, was due to an alarm, although I'm not sure how that would happen.
That being said, has anyone encountered any issue, that I would call deal breakers, like voice calls, wifi dopping, slow hotspot or cell data, etc....
I'm not an avid big user of the camera, so I'm what you'd call a casual point-n-shoot person, so the camera is a low priority on my list when it comes to phones, as I don't do much with selfies or picture taking.
What I do want in a phone is good working voice and data, hotspot, and fingerprint scanner. I could even get past a buggy or glitchy fingerprint scanner even.
I've had some really bad bad bad experiences with phones as of late. I bought that g5 plus and had the voice call issues, which was not a carrier thing it was the phone, as my nexus 5x and oneplus 3 do not suffer from it. Now I have a oneplus 3, and although I love the phone, but it seems that I cannot upgrade my os at all, past 7.1.1, due to I get drastically slow data speeds. I won't go into a lot of detail on that, just in short anything past 7.1.1 android it happens, data speeds get cut near in 1/2. I'm in contact with 1+ and hope dearly that they can find a fix to this, but I am still shopping as I don't hold much stock in they will actually find a fix and more sluff it off, especially given they no longer support the phone at all.
My poor nexus 5x is suffering from bad battery life, more-so than before , and has some slow downs now, and stuttering at some points. I'm guessing it's on it's way out, this is why I was shopping for another phone and I got the 5 plus, but had issues, and now this oneplus 3 issue.
So as for looking and researching, it seems like the g5s plus doesn't suffer from the issues the g5 plus has, so it seems like it would be a good choice.
So I'm hoping those who actually have the phone and use it on a daily basis can chime in and tell me what the pros and cons are, what you like and/or don't like, aside from the obvious camera issues.

I never faced any issue with Fingerprint, call, Wi-Fi. The only issue that's particularly bothering me is that most call recorder apps don't work (except Boldbeast recorder which is doing fine as of now).
My phone fell from 6 feet height once and landed flat on the screen. I thought it'd have shattered by some miracle (or the chinese tampered glass), even the protector didn't get any scratch except like 3 mm of it got chipped off one of its corners.
So, it's quite a sturdy one. Moreover, the camera quality has been improved significantly after the updates. Now, there's almost 0 shutter lag clicking the normal pics and almost half a second to 1 second lag to click in Depth mode or HDR mode.
However, I still think one plus3 is still a much better option than this one. You may also have a look at Xiaomi A1.
For the money, it's a great device. Had it for 3 months, used on gsm (att) and cdma (Verizon) no issues with calls. Since camera isn't am issue for ya, I'll say it takes pictures, certainly not the best pictures, but it works - but what would ya expect for a $300 or less phone. Low light is where it really struggles (as expected). Rom development isn't the greatest, is a relatively new device, hoping that gets better but what is available is good enough for daily drivers at least. And custom roms are 64 bit, not 32 like stock which does give a noticeable performance bump. Battery life is great - better than my 6p when it was new, and better than my n5 when it was new. Games, if that's your thing, run fine. I tried some racing sims for fun and no problems (I was actually impressed by how they ran). The all metal construction feels solid, really solid. I've never used a case or screen protector (it lives in my back pocket), dropped it from about 4 feet one day on to a hard tile floor, not a mark in it. I'll also say the finger print gestures are great. No need for the nav bar, which makes the screen almost the exact same size as the 6p (at my age bigger is definitely better!). The sd625 has enough power to run everything smoothly, with the benefit of being very power efficient. Ruining 64 bit os, performance is almost as good as my 6p (before the big cores died) - sorting and adding formula to a spreadsheet with 100k to 150k rows takes a few seconds, but barely longer than the fully working 6p.
This is a good bang for your buck device. I'd recommend it, and have to a few people who are getting it now.
It has its Pros and Cons, but it's really the first Android device I've had that I haven't immediately thought about my next phone. It's fast enough, smoother than my wife's iphone 7 at least..Everything is a little better than average except camera performance. Camera is "meh" as others have pointed out, and there have been times where I was frustrated trying to take decent photos over the holidays.

*If you can afford it, get the 4GB RAM version. Using the camera causes most apps to close out of memory for some reason on my 3GB model. Sent bug requests and they say it is due to RAM management.
In the $200-$300 price range, I think it's either this phone or the Honor 7x. Honor has a better Camera, but has EMUI

On looking more, it seems moto released a patch that fixes the camera issues now, so that's a good thing. The video I saw with the new update and depth setting was a HUGE inccrease in speed now....almost instant now compared to 2-3 seconds or better.
So far I can't seem to find much negative about this phone, perhaps because its still new, not sure.

Looking on Swappa.com, I was seeing OnePlus 3T's in the $300-$350 range, which if you ask me, looks like a better phone...Not as "new", but Snapdragon 821, 6 GB of RAM, I think they're already on Oreo too...
Coming from the oneplus 3 and having slow data issues, and this is not just a little, this is at least 1/2.....24Mbps before the update to Oreo, down to 8-10Mbps after. That unexceptible in any terms. I've been in contact with 1+ and after 5 emails, still no fix in sight.
I don't feel like repeating the same thing all over.
This data issue is rampant on the one plus 3. Do a search on "oneplus 3 slow speed after android update". Tons of people having the issue. This has haunted these phones since 2016.
Not everyone has it, some do, but I'm not willing to take that chance again.

Did some testing on my hotspot today on the 1+3, so I wanna ask, is anyone here with a g5s plus, using tmobile service and hotspot? can you test your hotspot speeds and let me know what you get.
I have a suspicion tmobile is limiting non-branded tmobile phones ie: a phone that's unlocked, and not bought from tmobile store or tmobile.
Both my 5x and 1+3 have the issues of slow hotspot, but when I went to a tmobile store today, inserted my sim card in a tmobile branded phone and tested hotspot on my 5x and 1+3, I got good speeds, 24-50Mbps, but when I put the sim in the 5x or the 1+3, both suffer from bad slow hotspot speeds 1-3Mbps, while cell data on the phone is fine.
If they are indeed blocking or limiting non-tmobile branded phones, then even the g5s plus will suffer from slow hotspot as well.

I finally did some more tesitng today, and found that the 1+3 has what I think is hardware issues with hotdpot. I placed my sim into my 5x phone and now things are fine, so it's not a tmobile issues or blocking non tmobile phones, as my 5x is still non tmobile, but it works fine.
I'm going to chalk it up as the 1+3 has bad hardware or flawed hardware of some sort that affects bad hotspot.
I'm going to order the g5s Plus this coming friday so I am looking forward to getting this phone.

Lol. It wouldn't. I read that a lot about the xperia z3 too. People drop phones and struggle to admit "i was clumsy and dropped my glass phone and it cracked".
I have the g5s plus and it's great. The camera isn't very good, and sometimes apps crash, usually at the point they're loaded/switched back to, and sometimes an app I'm not using will tell me it's crashed but other than that it's very stable. I've had no random reboots. Battery life is great. I had the z3 before for about 3 years and the screen just failed while I was holding it. I just can't be bothered with expensive phones any more so I got the g5s plus expecting it to be a step down from the z3 but it is better in every respect except for the camera (awesome on the z3, average on the g5s plus) and the magnetic charger (z3 has, g5s plus has the old fashioned usb only and i'm always worried it's going to die one day). If I lost this phone I'd buy another one to replace it without thinking about it. I considered the oneplus 5 initially but it's twice as expensive and the camera isn't very good on that one either so i wasn't sure where the extra £250 I'd need to pay would be going (I paid £260 in the uk for my g5s plus).
I'm not expecting moto to rush out oreo, however. I get the feeling they're even slower than samsung for updates.

My own opinion, coming from a Note 4..... Camera isnt good. Other than that, this is a spectacular phone, running rooted stock only. Catch it on sale and cant beat it.
Use it as my work phone, great battery life and very smooth. Here in the UK I can't get volte or WiFi calling which is a little annoying.. Motorola don't release updates like they used to either, they are much slower.
That's not too say is a bad phone though, I really like it.
Phone is really good for a normal user. I'm using this for more than a week now. It works well. I get 2 days battery backup. This is the best phone available at this price for the hardware specification.
My 2 cents , is this I had a Nexus 6 p and then an Essential , the Nexus was great but it had a terrible battery issue, the screen wasnt very good, i actually had two of them the first one died within a week, then aftrr 2 years i got the Essential , what a beautiful phone , very elegant, barely drop it , crack, still nice, but there is a terrible camera. The calks dropped because the cellular software and radio is messed up , the side screen s have touch issues , theres a lot of little things
The G5S+ , i bought because it was rated high for midlevel phone and to be quite honest , its lightbthan both previous phones, better call quality , vetter battery life, this phone wont be any other phone on any test , but it will always rate in the middle of the pack, it has not let me down at all, feels good in the hand , great touch , everything about it is mediocre , but thats ok, because it rocks, its my go to daily driver , it was sim unlocked when i bought it, bl unlocked after 5 minutes adb , havent rooted or twrped it yet , nit enough time, but its worth the money
Hey everyone!
I noticed this section was a bit dry so thought I'd kick it off as a happy new owner of a grey Nokia XR20 in Australia. Still on 4G but will be giving Optus 5G a shot soon.
My last phone was a Razer Phone 2 and I was hesitant about going from a past bleeding edge to low-mid range phone today, but the XR20 seems decent enough for a tough phone.
So far all my go to apps like Gmail, Evernote, Plex, Youtube, WhatsApp and others are working better than they did which is all I needed. The phone is definitely miles ahead of my last tough phone a Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 which was pretty cool but felt further from the mainstream of capability than this does.
I have only two gripes and they're about the software:
I wish I could change the Google Assistant button, I've tried a few apps but they don't seem to pick it up when pressed to reassign it. I'm keen to hear if anyone has tips, even if they're developer ones!
The camera app seems.. OK? I tried a Google Camera port for the X20 but the colours were all wrong
Final though - I know this device is on Android One, but I am a tinkerer and Linux geek so am keen to hear thoughts on how we can get some of that action on this unit.

Also from Oz mate, & just bought an XR20 my first non Motorola or Google phone in the last 12 years & my first tough phone since my first ever Android which was the Moto Defy a very legendary tweaker phone from the early days, up there with the HTC HD2 for modding, running CyanogenMod9 the Defy was a little beast...
I'm glad this is an Android one handset ( I've tried a few) as the update schedule has not gone to **** [email protected] Moto & it's the only way to get more stock than Moto was,
Coming from an Edge 20 pro my only gripe is the downgrade in refresh rate, I don't care if its powerful or fast & since the Edge 20 broke way too easily after owning it only 3 weeks, I just wanted something durable...Moto aren't what they were during the X series heyday...
And there's nothing else out there that's anywhere near as decent so I made the jump..
It's actually a great phone, though it's a tank of a thing , I'll be happy with it for a year or so I'd say

I was searching for a "myself proof" phone. The last one had fallen in salted water and not appreciated it ...
This one is "myself-proof"
It has fallen from 1.50m several times and still works.
It has fallen into salt water and still works (just try to clean eat with fresh water as soon as possible, better with demineralized water).
By the way I love the fact that water will not stay on the screen, the screen behave quite like hydrophobic. Funny.
Compared to other "rough" phone it looks more casual and is quite powerful. Battery can stand easily for a full day with full use. Sound is quite powerful (I'm a bit hard hearing).
Camera is ok for me since I have a DSLR when I want to make photo. I use either google camera or Open Camera.
Unpleasant stuff:
The red button is linked to Google Assistant and if you don't use it, it's absolutely useless. No way to reassign it.
It seems - as for now- completely non-rootable. So you are locked with Android 13.
