XT1060 Custom Recoveries do not work - Moto X Q&A

I currently have PacMan rom 4.4.4 KitKat installed on my Moto X and when I went to update to a new rom I found that TWRP didn't work. I can boot into recovery mode, but the splash screen just displays and never actually enters the recovery. I have to hold the power button down until the phone reboots to get out of it. I currently have TWRP v2.8.7.0 installed. I tried some of the older versions of TWRP and none worked. I also tried updating to the unoffical TWRP 3.0.2 and that behaved the same. Lastly, I tried Philz CWM recovery v6.57.9. That loaded and I was able to navigate the menu but once I selected a option that performed a task, it would freeze. If anyone can help me out it'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Had a similar problem on my XT1060 Dev Ed., lost all my data coz of it. Only method which worked was to flash a stock firmware via RSDlite or manually through mfastboot.
Try option 5 from here with complete data wipe.

Try to go to bootloader first and load it from there. Already saw this working some times.

[Q] Bricked. Boot Loop. No Data in SD Card.

Hi guys,
I seem to have a problem
So I was running 4.4.2 with Sense 5.5 on my phone. Vodafone (my phone company in Aus) sent out an OTA update for my phone. I'd already rooted my phone and had a custom recovery, so I knew I wasn't able to install it without going back to stock. So I tried following the procedure to go back to stock. Used 'Guru_Reset_M7_2.24.980.2' to do it and it seemed to work pretty well. It was 4.3, so I did an OTA, first one (like a 3mb file) installed fine, then the second one for 4.4.2 Sense 5.5 downloaded and installed, but not it is stuck in a boot loop. So I tried to do a factory reset from the bootloader which sent it back into the bootloop, then as nothing was working, I thought I'd install the custom recovery (TWRP) and install the ROM again and just leave it at that so at least I have a phone. Only problem is I had to unlock the bootloader again which wiped everything on the internal storage. And I'm stuck.
There's nothing in the internal memory. It's stuck in a bootloop after an OTA. I have TWRP installed as my recovery. I can access both recovery and bootloader.
Any idea's?
Also, for some reason, I can't download or access anything from this website; http://ww35.bugsylawson.com/ which I've seen used in multiple places to try and unbrick your phone
Thanks all!

Will this enable me to go fully back to stock and perform OTA updates, or is this just a way to get me out of a rut?
Thanks for the help by the way, currently in the process of doing the sideload.

Thanks for the help man, I tried doing an ADB before I posted this and it didn't work for some reason, but when I used this ROM, worked perfectly fine. Just updated to 71.1 just then as well, so now phones working a-okay. Thanks again man!

[Q] Broken recovery VS980

Hello
I have a G2 VS98026A running 4.4.4 BlissStalk.
I wanted to try and flash the crdroid 5.0 Rom, went to recovery to take a backup,
the process started and after a while the screen went black. I rebooted and tried to
enter recovery mode again, but nothing, black screen. I had TWRP 2.6.3.2.
Since then i tried reflashing all vs980 versions of both TWRP and CWM
with loki_tool and with Flashify and FreeGee, no luck.
I want to save reverting back to stock as a last resort, so I am wondering if anybody has a solution for this.
I am having a similar issue however mine was caused slightly differently.
I have jackpotcalvin unofficial cm11 and few weeks backs updated to bootstack 26a no issues. However that also updated recovery at the time.
Didn't bother me, however earlier I went into flashify and realized there was an updated twrp version. So I said why not update. So using flashify I downloaded the most recent twrp available (2.8.3.0) and then selected extract and flash directly from flashify. Chose to reboot into recovery and now nothing. There is some sort of command that appears on the LG screen when it first boots but it shows it for too short of a time for me to be able to read what it says and then I just get a black screen and that's it. Nothing else.
I am able to boot into cm11 no problems and everything else works just fine. Just don't have the option to boot into recovery.
I would also prefer not to have to do a clean wipe or anything of that nature.

[Q] Boot Loop for Moto X Developer Edition (cause by Lollipop 5.1 update?)

Hi, I have a Moto X 2013 Developer Edition with bootlocker unlocked and stock rom with Android 4.4.4. It's root, has TWRP and SuperSU.
Since last week my phone is shutting down almost always after power on (only a few times it keeps power on for a few hours), and restarting in TWRP recovery mode.
Do you know what could be the cause of this boot loop?
I suspect it has something to do with the Lollipop Update to 5.1, cause I start getting this boot loop after the update option was shown in my phone (I didn't accept the update at first).
I tried installing again SuperSu (thinking that maybe root was disabled), but without luck. The phone continue with this boot loop.
I also tried installing now the Lollipop Update to see if that resolve the issue, unfortunately after the update is downloaded and I accept the install, the phone shutdown and it boots in TWRP again (so the updated doesn't install).
Hope my problem was explained well and anybody can help cause my phone is really unusable like this.
Thanks in advance!
You're only suppose to install stock ota's using stock recovery not custom recovery. It's best (if you can) flash back to stock if you know how.

can you please tell me how to flash stock recovery
Thanks for your response. Do you mean to flash stock recovery? or full stock rom?
Just in case, I don't need/want to install lollipop, only want to avoid this kind of boot loop and stay at 4.4.4. I'll only install 5.1 it if that fix the issue /but as I say I can't do it because after download and try to install, it power down the phone and goes to twrp recovery).
Thanks for your help!

It's best that you flash back to fully stock rom. If you can flash back to 4.4.4

What if they disabled the update app, wouldn't that stop the update from trying to install and cause it to reboot into twrp

Hi cdiamon, sorry asking again, but there is something I don't understand.
I have original stock rom 4.4.4. I only unlock bootloader (I have the developer edition), put twrp and root the phone. Why the suggestion is to flash back to 4.4.4 to resolve the issue? Didn't I'm already at stock rom?
By the way do you think the problem is because twrp and/or root by supersu? If yes, can't i simply uninstall supersu or remove twrp in some way?
B.E.McAllister and praty, thanks both for your answers, I'll look at them too.
Thanks in advance!

The problem is you have twrp on your phone when the phone is trying to update. You need to flash stock recovery then take update. Or keep twrp and disable update app.

Hi monkeytools. thanks for the explanation. I think I'll disable update app then.
Just to know, is there any way to uninstall TRWP without flashing stock recovery and loosing all of my configuration?
Thanks in advance!

You don't loose anything by flashing recovery. That is if you just flash recovery or fastboot recovery.

Moto X 2014 Pure Turns Off When Selecting Recovery in Bootloader

I have a Moto X 2014 Pure that I was trying to root. I said to myself, why not install TWRP? So I flashed TWRP, it gave me 'mismatched partition sizes (recovery)', but according to some other sources, that was normal. I tried to reboot into recovery, it gave me the stock recovery. I said, huh, weird, I'll flash it again. And after that, I was unable to get into recovery at all. Bootloader still works, and the phone can still boot normally, it just appears that the recovery is GONE. If I select "Recovery" from bootloader, it just turns off (seems to at least). I am running Marshmallow 6.0 on the Moto X, and I'm having a hard time finding a stock recovery for it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

The mismatch is normal because you're flashing a non-stock recovery. Are you using only the volume rocker in bootloader mode? Is your bootloader unlocked?
Get stock firmware from here:
https://firmware.center:8081/firmware/Motorola/
Make sure you don't downgrade.
I am only using the volume rocker in bootloader, which is unlock. I managed to root my phone by temporarily booting into TWRP and installing the ZIP files. However, I still don't seem to have a recovery. At this point, I really don't need one, but I will try that firmware.

TWRP + Root Nougat Huawei P9

Is it possible to install TWRP with your device running the Nougat beta ?
The recovery is separate from the firmware. So I don't see why it wouldn't be possible. Root on the other hand I wouldn't know but I suppose the SuperSU beta zip file flashed with custom recovery would get the phone rooted.
If it was a kernel being flashed then that would matter as it affects the firmware (as it replaces the stock kernel).
Yep. You can install a custom recovery, even if you accidentally wipe your system, the custom recovery will still be there. (I have experience) I think that, if you can find the right supersu zip file for your phone, you should be able to root your phone.

Install the drivers for your phone. Just look up Huawei p9 bootloader drivers, and you should find it.

Already tried this, since installing the Nougat beta my PC only recognises my phone when in recovery mode. I installed TWRP but phone still boots into the original erecovery and not TWRP
Did you install with with fastboot? or from within the phone? Because you have to reboot to recovery pretty much right after flashing it. Try re-flashing twrp from inside the phone with flashify, then reboot to it immediately afterwards. (Get the 3.0.2-0 (or higher) version for your phone)

Yes installed with fastboot, I manually booted into recovery (volume up + power button) right after flashing it. I thought flashify requires root ??
Wait, you updated to 7.0 without root? Did you use the normal updater? Because if so, try finding a way to downgrade again. Maybe that will work

Yeah, I just flashed the update using the dload method. The main reason I want to install TWRP is so i can downgrade. I've tried using the dload method to downgrade however it doesn't work.
For the dload method, I think you have to flash stock recovery first

I am currently using stock recovery and it still won't let me downgrade, the update reaches 51% then an error occurs. Would it be possible to flash downgrade firmware using fastboot ?
I believe you can, but you should check online to see if it is.

Ok. Good luck!
Same problem here, I installed a leaked Nougat beta for the Honor 8 via TWRP and when I tried to get back to TWRP it wouldn't let me. I've tried to flash it again via fastboot but I can't boot into it :/
I have this problem too after Flashing Nougat.
I have already flashed twrp recovery via fastboot, installation complete. But I cant boot into recovery mode.
I have never had this kind of problem before. If you tried a cold boot (Hold volume up + power), try typing "adb reboot recovery" instead (or the other way around, if you've done that)
Hello.
I came from z3.
For z3 to get in recovery with N u have to hold down vol button and insert cable. Charger or PC

I don't know if this works, but I was looking around in HiSuite (huawei's phone thing app on pc) and saw a ROM flashing option. Try that.
