I have noticed that when I use Pandora on Froyo the audio quality is significantly worse than it was on stock 2.1 or cyanogenmod 5.0.7.1.
I am aware of the High and Normal settings in the preferences however it does not help.
Under 2.1 (stock and cyan) Normal would sound alright and High would sound fantastic.
Under 2.2 (froyo) High sounds bad and normal is horrible.
Has anyone else noticed the sound quality drop in pandora moving to Froyo?
This is independent of the song being streamed and is very noticeable when using good headphones.
Are you using the stock 2.2 kernel or one with the audioboost patch?
I have tried using multiple kernels including stock, cyan 2.6.34 and ravens avs 2.6.33.4 kernels. Does not effect the problem at all.
I'm running Paul's pre-root (including 4.06 radio and kernel that came with it) and sounds great to me, same as before (CM 5.0.6+oc/uv+audio mod+desire cam). In fact I'm not sure if I've reset it to stay on High with 3g yet since I updated. (Tmo USA N1 if it makes a difference ).
Wish I could give helpful input other than its possible. I know I wiped everything I could and flashed it over CM.
Running Paul's root with IntersectRaven's .34 kernel and Pandora sounds as good as it did with his kernel on CM5.0.6.
Haven't noticed a difference.

same here.
Hmmm, I will look into this more and report back if I find anything.
Thanks for the help guys.
I as well noticed this problem, tried resting/full wipe, restarting, toggling settings to no results. Terrible audio quality even in high. Other sounds are not affected it seems. Running kernel that the update brought.
Am I the only that has actually plugged the phone into an fm transmitter to use with my car stereo? Of course i am, you kids all have your bluetooth radios and your xms and syriusnessess. When using Pandora, the bass is much much louder in froyo than it was in all previous roms. Kernel with modded sound or not, the bass is big. So, yes, the sound is very different from what it used to be. Mids are too high and highs are meh... nonexistent. It doesn't sound bad on the phone or through earbuds, but unless you like rap, you probably won't like the sound coming through your car. But, I don't think that's anything some decent equilizer software can't fix. Personally, I think the sound is an improvement despite the focus on the lower end of the spectrum. In previous versions, it was to light and airy with no lowend.

I am on Froyo, and I notice it.
Also, I notice that songs frequently stop playing in the middle or near the end, and then Pandora seems to fail to recover and skips to the next song. Does that happen for you?

The same thing happens to me while on 3G, and happens mostly while moving. If I stay still, I can play continuously with no problems. But while walking or driving, I usually can't finish a song before it skips. This also happens on any other internet radio app, like DroidLive and Slacker.

Yes, I've noted that, as well as fairly frequent brief pauses that do resume and continue to play the current song without skipping to the next. (The combination of my ears and my stereo system are not sufficiently discriminating for me to detect any difference in the audio quality, though.)
I've noticed that I can't control the next song, play/pause with the Bluetooth controls anymore. I hit next to skip a song and my music player starts playing while Pandora is still playing.
I use Pandora often in my car and I also can confirm the audio quality is now horrible for me on Froyo.
If I nandroid back to my CM backup it sounds fine but under Froyo it sounds horrible.
I also have noticed a decrease in audio quality, but that might be due to changing ROMs from CM to Stock Froyo leak... (don't really know how the builds differer audio wise)
@ maxawesome
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing problems with Pandora. Often my music just stops... sometimes it won't continue streaming either... It worked flawlessly with CM 5.0.6 (though i only use it in my car...)
I am also confirming that after the Paul's Froyo zip update the audio quality has decreased dramatically. It almost seems like the sample rate is much lower affecting mostly higher frequency sounds like voice or instruments that produce higher frequencies. The bass sounds ok, but there is alway a small hiss noticable.
Also, when my screen turns off while Pandora is playing I noticed audio drop out over the BT connection. When I force the screen on this does not seem to occur.
Had the desire rom on it before and audio was stunning, almost CD quality.
Hope someone finds a fix or workaround soon.

Agreed, happy to know I am not alone with the issue. For now I have reverted to Cyan 5.0.7.1.
i don't know about pandora, but the stock music app sounds a ton better to me, both through headphones and through my car speakers (using the POS 3.5mm to tape adapter, lol)
The other day I plugged my N1 to my car and noticed the quality was a lot worse. At first I didn't think much about it or even the fact that it was because of Froyo until I came upon this thread. But yeah, the quality is a lot worse now. I am thinking Pandora needs a update.
So guys, i searched for this problem in several threads but nothing seems to help me to solve it.
Here is the problem.
Since i rooted my Htc One (E 11) i noticed that i can't use the max volume on CM/AOSP/PA roms because my speakers begins to sound distorted (like the audio is overpumped).
I made several tests with different roms (no audio mods indeed) but the result was the same.
Someone suggested me my HTC speakers were damaged but i think it is impossible because when i use a Stock based rom (ViperOne, Elegancia, Revolution HD etc.) my speaker are simply PERFECT at max volume, even if i use Sound mods.
I really would like to know what is the problem and IF i can solve it because i would love to use CM/AOSP/PA Roms...not only stock.
Thank you.

I have the same issue running 4.3. I keep mine turned down a little, so it's not distorting, and still seems loud enough. I think these roms actually allow the sound to be much louder. But I could be wrong, I'm not a dev or anything
Thanks for your answer. At least I know my speakers are ok ahaah

Hey guys!
I was using CM12 but I had to return to stock because some bad battery drain issues. When using a fix for WhatsApp audio recording (avaliable on the CM12 thread), I noticed a HUGE sound quality increase on my voice recordings - no more crappy telephone-like voices, it sounds clear without noises and stuff. I decided to try the same audio file for stock KK but unfortunately it is incompatible.
My question is: since the same hardware can provide two very diferent sound quality levels, what I need to do in order to achieve the same or similar sound quality in Stock 4.4.4 ROM? Is there a file where I can change sound parameters and make it work better?
I've installed Android 6.0.1 Cataclysm, running default kernel, while listening to music on spotify or Google Play Music can hear sound popping like on old tape, when ViperFX is off nothing like this occures. How can it be fixed?
It sounds like your speakers might be failing, same thing happened to me right before my speakers failed completely and had to RMA.

Sound is distorting/popping because of over amplification/over boosting of bass and treble. this will damage speaker. Better keep it in limit.
I know the possibities of my phone's speakers, but I was talking about high quality headphones. I've flashed ElementalX kernel and the problem didn't occure as far
Someone mentioned something in regards to kernels being the culprit. Different hotplugs caused different results. I think it was in @guitardedhero v4a thread
I would like to know how audio processing in Android works.
For the last three months I've tried out many different ROMs for the Xiaomi Mi 3. One of the most important aspects of a ROM for me is the headphone sound quality, since I use my device most for listening music on my Shure SE215's. I have noticed that there is a huge different in headphone sound between ROMs. MIUI kitkat sounds nothing like Cyanogenmod 12.1, which sounds nothing like Cyanogenmod 13.0, which sounds nothing like Mokee 6.0.1. In my opinion my headphones sound best with Mokee 6.0.1. No muddy lows or an unpleasant harsh sound, but a nicely balanced sound with especially the mids and highs sounding gorgeous and way better than CM13.0 which is my daily driver at the moment. What does a ROM do to an audio file before sending a direct signal to the earphone? Does the kernel play a role? I'm not interested in speaker sound, only headphones. And is it possible to export whatever makes Mokee 6.0.1 sound so good to Cyanogenmod 13.0?
Help me out here!
why not just use viperfx and tweak it how you like?
Tried that first thing, but it somehow heavily increased ambient noise. Everything worked properly in Viper, but no matter how much I tweaked it, I wasn't able to get the sound Mokee produces. There was also a profile for my particular in-ear monitors that's supposed to make it compensate and sound flat, but that really decreased the sound stage a lot. Might be that Viper4Android induces a phase shift or increases audio latency. I'm not familiar with the terms that audiophiles use, so I have no idea how to describe the change in sound (even if the frequency response is similar). I also tried using AudioFX which is built into Cyanogenmod to equalize it to a sound signature I prefer, but whatever I do. I can't get it to sound similar to Mokee. Cyanogenmod sounded the same as Mokee about a month ago, but then the sound drivers for the Mi 3 got all messed up when they imported the Dirac profiles from MIUI, which probably just adds a huge load of post processing to the audio and adds some bass and whatever most people like, but it annoys me a lot. So I guess my last option to get a nice headphone experience is to unpack Cyanogenmod, replace the audio files and libraries with those from Mokee and repack the zip. But which files?
