SDcard storage mystery - One (M7) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been busy trying to clean up my One M7 and making a nandroid back up in preparation to try to go back to stock (with S-on..). That in itself took a lot of trial and error but I managed. I think the problem was simply missing storage space. So I deleted all my music (11.5 Gb) and a few files more. Finally I had a full 6 Gb backup which I transfered to my PC to save space on the internal storage. Initially TWRP did showd two backups but I think they were incomplete because I wasn't able to locate the files.
Now, If I connect to my Windows 10 PC, storage shows a normal 25.4 Gb total but it also shows 10.16 used.
But when I open the storage folder on my PC and select its entire content it only adds up to 1.99 GB. I ticked the box "show items" in Windows 10.
My question is: how can I make this mysterious 8 Gb visible? Am I missing an important thing?
I have Rootexplorer and ESexplorer installed and have used them to investigate. I checked the "show hidden folders" button. I also did a search in the "general" forum and read most of the relevant posts, I'm aware that the OS takes up a lot of space and I'm aware marketing bull**** about GBs.
Please bear in mind that I am an interested NOOB so I need to have it spelled out......
Any help is highly appreciated.

You probably turned on recycle bin in ES file explorer. Try to clean the recycle bin, and turn it off.
Good luck,
Mike

since ur returning to stock with s-on
i always wipe everything in twrp including internal storage using the advanced wipe option

in Settings > Storage, is there any way to make the item "Other" visible. it holds a whopping 17.83 GB.
APPS: 3.11 GB
Music: 46.47 MB
Photos: 289 MB
Downloads: 361 MB
Basically, when I connect to the PC and open the HTC One folder all stuff is visible except the "other" folder
Perhaps I take the long road and install Crushalot's Guru_Reset_M7_2.24.111.3.zip and go through the motions of updating through HTC until I am completely up to date and then in the end install TWRP?
My phone is a
(bootloader) modelid: PN0710000
(bootloader) cidnum: T-MOB101
thanks in advance for the help

Okay, I found it.
ES File explorer is not my favourite.. too much distraction
I used Root Explorer and turned on "legacy long click menu", it enables to see more detail and also "properties" of any given folder.
If you click on a folder and it takes a loooong time to show the Size of the folder, it is a BIG folder..... be patient.
Going through all the folders one-by-one I found a lot of GBs in root/data/media/0/. » 11.38 GB
I found a Backup folder in root/data/media/0/Downloads which will not be visible on your PC !. (3.81 GB)
I also deleted the full backup in the TWRP folder. That one is also on my PC so I keep it there instead of on the phone. Saved another 5.83 GB..
After that I somehow suddenly have a very acceptable 19.9 GB of free space.
YESSSSSSSSSSS!

/data/media is the real location of your internal "sdcard" (/sdcard) since android 3.0. Instead of having 2 separate partitions for data and sdcard, its now on the same partition, /sdcard is a simlink to /data/media. With android 4.2 came the multi-user feature, the main user is called "0" so /data/media/0 = main user internal storage = /sdcard. What you see in /data/media/0 should be visible from your computer, if its not then there is something wrong with your phone. Just explaining it so you don't make the same mistake as others did: "Hey I have an unwanted copy of all my /sdcard files in /data/media/0, lets delete everything in /data/media/0 to save some space" ...
Now if you can't see the files stored in /data/media/0 when connected to your computer or when going to /sdcard from your phone, you might want to try this

Hi Alray,
Thanks for that explanation, it's very helpful.
reading your reply I realized I was not entirely clear: the "Download" folder is visible on my Windows 10 PC but the folder "backup" inside "download" wasn't visible on the PC.
By the way, for some reason I have a "Download" folder as well as a folder called "downloads" (with this exact spelling)
The later contains stuff that I cannot remember putting there... perhaps a synchronization effect? Although I never asked for it as far as I can remember.
I tried your suggestion ( the link) but it didn't work out.
Since I hardly know what I'm doing I leave it at that..
but in case you're curious, this was the cmd result:
c:\android>adb shell
[email protected]:/ $ su
su
restorecon -1|[email protected]:/ $ FR /data/media/0
restorecon -FR /data/media/0
SELinux: Loaded file_contexts from /file_contexts
SELinux: Could not stat /data/media/0: Permission denied.

Deleting Bluetooth Folder in "My Device"

When I went to install a CAB noticed that I had a third option to install to, besides Main Memory and Storage Card, it was Bluetooth. I went to the File Explorer and noticed that there is a Bluetooth folder in My Device. I have no idea how this folder was created, but I have no use for Bluetooth and want to delete it!
When I try to delete it in the File Explorer it says access denied. When I go to Total Commander and delete it, the screen flashes, but the folder remains.. in the properties window none of the attributes are checked, and the in ROM attribute is grayed out.
Please Help! Thanks.
thats probably just a generic folder for any bluetooth storage devices (if there be such a thing). If you have no use for it, just leave it alone. It's not taking any space (well, maybe a couple bytes, but thats nothing)

Accessing apk files

Thank you in advance, this is a great community.
I am running cognition 3.04 and making my first attempt at transparent widgets. However, I am uncertain if I am properly set up to access and reinstall apk files. I can find them on my phone using the file explorer in Andriod Mate. However, it appears that when I plug my phone into the usb or use any other file exploring software, the base directory is /mnt/sdcard/ . I feel that I am missing a critical component of this process, as I do not have ready access to the files I need to alter and eventually replace.
Thank you again,
Dez

You would need to copy them from ur /system/app folder to some folder on ur sdcard to see them on computer.
Below is the file system layout.
/ (root)
/system
/system/app
/...
/...
/...
/sdcard
/sdcard/...
/sdcard/...
/sdcard/...
/sdcard/external_sd
/sdcard/external_sd/...
/sdcard/external_sd/...
/sdcard/external_sd/...
When u connect to computer, it mounts only the internal and external sd cards. It does not mount the system areas like system, data, etc.

[GUIDE][Windows] Making backups with adb

NOTE: The Nexus 4 does not have a physical sd card. However, the user directory on the phone is located at /storage/sdcard0/ and will, for the purposes of this guide, be referred to as the sdcard.

Making sdcard backups with MTP is often unreliable. First of all, files are not always immediately updated with the ones on your phone. As a result, there may be folders missing, files that you deleted on your phone still showing up, etc. Also, the Date modified values of files are changed to the time that the files were moved onto your computer, which can cause errors when restoring them to your phone; i.e. photos in gallery not appearing in order. Other times, MTP is simply not available (if you have an older computer or an unsupported OS, for example). The best way to go about a backup is by using adb (Android Debug Bridge).
So, let's get started.
1. First, you're going to need some variant of the Android SDK/Software Development Kit as well as the Nexus 4 drivers installed. I won't show you how to do this, as there are already many guides and tutorials available.
Here's the link to the official Google ADT/Android Developer Tools.
2. Once you've got everything on your computer set up, open up the Settings app and go to About phone. Scroll down and quickly tap the Build number tile seven times. You have now enabled Developer options.
Go back, enter Developer options and enable USB debugging. An authorization pop-up will appear; allow it.
3. Now, open up a command prompt window and change directory to the location of adb on your computer. If you installed the official SDK, this will be under
Code:
folderyouextractedto\sdk\platform-tools
Connect your phone via USB and type
Code:
adb devices
You should see something like this:
Code:
List of devices attached
random numbers and letters device
If you don't, you probably don't have the drivers installed properly OR you failed to authorize your computer for USB debugging.
4. Make a folder on C:\ (or whatever your OS drive is) with NO SPACES in the file name. You can now make the backup.
Type
Code:
adb pull /storage/sdcard0/ C:\folderyoumade
You are now backing up your entire sdcard. This can take a while, depending on how many files you have on your phone.
When the copy is complete, you should see something like
Code:
x files pulled. 0 files skipped.
0 files skipped is very important, as it confirms that all of the files were copied over correctly.
To backup specific folders on it, simply change the command to that directory on your phone.
i.e.
Code:
adb pull /storage/sdcard0/folderyouwant/ C:\folderyoumade
5. To restore a backup, simply type
Code:
adb push C:\folderyoumade /storage/sdcard0/
NOTE: Restored folders DO NOT replace existing folders on your sdcard. They are merged (so pre-existing files in a folder remain, while any new files are copied in).
Click to collapse
NOTE: I recommend that you do not use your phone during a backup or restore so as to make sure all files are properly copied.
Click to collapse
Remember, this is only an sdcard backup. App and system data are NOT copied over. If you want to make a backup of your app data, the easiest way to do this is with Titanium Backup, Helium, or a similar app and then backup those files using adb pull. If you wish to make a complete backup of your file system (not including sdcard though), make a nandroid from recovery.

You forgot the frontslash at the end of 0. Try that
On some devices you can't specify destiny forlder in order to use adb push or pull, you have to use current folder:
Code:
cd C:\folderyoumade
adb pull /storage/sdcard0/folderyouwant/
It's better to backup the sdcard this way than using adb backup because it also backups the Android folder inside the sdcard.
Or much shorter;
adb pull /sdcard C:\SDCARDBackUp

Is there a way for pull to skip files which already exist in your specified destination? Sometimes it errors in the middle of a long transfer because it doesn't like a file name or something.
I was looking for a better way to push my virtual sd card backup, as using the copy and paste method in windows doesn't copy all of the files for some reason. It will copy all the files from the sd card to the PC, but not back again. I was having to search through every folder and copy and paste to get everything copied back. Thank you so much for this tutorial. I knew about adb push command, but I never tried it, because I always thought the copy and paste method would be easier. Boy was I wrong. This way pushes all the files in one try. Soooo much easier.
I have a question, can I also backup this file directory: /storage/emulated/0? Or is this something else, I checked both folder and they seem to be the same.
Hi,
I've done a full backup using adb backup, including the whole content of my sd card (using the -shared option).
However, when restoring my device using adb restore, nothing is restored on my sd card (not the apps and not the files).
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there any special option to use for the restore?
Is there any other way to restore my apps&data from my backup file (.ab) using other commands ?
The content of my backup file seems correct though.
Thanks!

Sounds like the adb backup didnt copy the /storage/sdcard0/android/ folder on the sdcard perhaps? Maybe try using adb pull to copy the scdard seperately in addition to doing the adb backup to be safe. You could push the sdcard data back manually if the restore doesnt. See below:

I font understand why is the front slash required?
I also forgot the front slash and was facing the same problem. Now its working after adding the front slash.
So, why is the front slash required and what does it mean ?
can I backup the sd card even if it is external using this method (apps are moved there too)?
edit: ok, I got the android folder from sd card, the message was:
/storage/sdcard1/Android/: 147 files pulled. 0 files skipped.,
but how am I supposed to see them?
I contacted AppMgr III, maybe they can tell me

File structure help (0 folder)

Looking for a definitive answer here, as I have searched and read and I still have yet to find an answer so please don't tell me to go search or read such and such thread. Thanks.
So I have gone from 4.1 to 4.3 and back and forth several times and my question is how to handle the file structure change. I understand that a new emulated file structure is located at data/media/0 but should I copy my old data there? Is there anyway to prevent the multiple user file structure? I tried pushing a layout_version file and changing permissions but when I flashed a 4.3 Rom it still created a 0 folder.

The actual location when viewed with a root file manager has been here on 4.1.2:
/data/media
Once you flash a 4.3 ROM, the actual location gets changed (and all the files moved) to here:
/data/media/0
The problems arise if the version of your custom recovery is not compatible with a 4.3 ROM. If it is not and you keep flashing 4.3 ROMs you might soon end up in trouble. If, while using the 'older' custom recovery, you continue flashing, your sdcard ends up somewhere around here:
/data/media/0/0/0/0/0/0 (etc.)
with all your files copied to every '0' directory and your symlinks end up the same way, and your device quickly runs out of space
Using a file manager that will show hidden files and folders, copy/move the files in the last '0' directory to:
/data/media/0
Now you can delete all the "extra 0" except for /data/media/0
Reboot
Profit?

I personally only do it on an as-needed basis, but it really depends on your usage. Before switching b/t 4.1 and 4.3+ ROMs, I make sure to copy/paste my SMS backup and/or MyBackup (rerware) backups to the appropriate file structure I am moving to. The apps themselves will only look in their current file structure when you try to restore. Of course in order to copy/paste the backups, you have to allow root access in ES File Explorer or whatever you use. TWRP backups can stay in the /0 structure just fine, as it will always look there in recovery.
Music and pics can be a challenge since they take up a lot of space, and replicating them in two different file structures will eat up a lot of storage. I don't store a lot of media on my phone, though, so I'm not sure the best way to address that. It's easy enough to find pics through file explorer, but I'm sure music playing apps only look in one folder or structure by default.
For most other apps, they will store their settings in each structure without taking up too much space, so it's fine to leave them as-is. Whenever you restore a Nandroid it's going to overwrite them again anyway.
Not sure if I have helped, but just sharing my experience.

Can't delete folder on my internal memory.

I had ktoonsez installed on my previous rom, I switched over to a different rom and now I can't delete the folder in my internal memory called, "device." When I look in the folder it has ktweaker and other stuff, I've tried to mount the system as r/w but it still doesn't work. Does anyone else have this folder? Photos attached.
Try looking in /data/media/0 or /data/media/legacy
See if the folder is there and try deleting it. Sometimes the files on /sdcard are just images of the data folder. GL!
Delete any folder easily
If you fell any problem to do copy, paste, error Deleting File or Folder. Then you should use Long Path Tool to solve your problem.
If Long Path Tool fails on start up, please ensure you have .net framework installed on your PC.
