Title says it all. I'm wondering whats the best route of action here. It's never been rooted/unlocked or factory wiped (maybe this is long overdue).
I'm wondering if a simple factory reset will do the trick or should I start thinking about a custom ROM. Or... is it asking too much out of this old phone?
Been looking at the Honor 5x, Blue Life One X, Nexus 5x, etc.
It's an XT1063 btw.
I wouldn't consider the Moto G (2014) an old phone. Its still actively being developed..
First thing I did when I received my Moto G (2014) is flashed a custom rom did a back up and then flashed cyanogenmod 13 then rooted.
It's extremely easy to do why not give it a try and see if that solves your problem. You can easily go back to stock.

OP don't even bother with this. I'm a Cyanogen Mod 13 user as well and no matter what I try I CANNOT get my moto g to run at a reasonable speed on 6.0. Its insanely laggy, drains my battery like mad and even making tweaks in the kernel auditor does NOTHING.
Trust me OP, you'd be better off rooting and either downgrading to stock lollipop or a CM12 based lollipop custom rom. I'm doing that now in fact because I can't stand this lag.

My moto g 2014 is not laggy but I can say the battery drains quickly I can get a full days use on it though.
Keep in mind its a small battery!

Radium Redefined is probably *THE* smoothest rom you can get on this phone for Android 6.0. Even then, its a horribly slow mess after installing 25-30 apps. Simply put, this phone doesn't have the RAM capacity and eMMC speeds necessary for Android 6.0 but everybody keeps trying really hard to make it work - and it just doesn't. No offense intended to the great devs who try their hardest to make these roms possible, however, I think we should focus on making stable builds instead of pushing out new ones all the while merging and consolidating new security patches into the stable builds.
I am not a dev, nor have i created anything except maybe RRO and CM themes, however, this is my brutally honest opinion of the dev scene for this phone.
If somebody could make a stable build that doesn't lag like 400 ping, we can consider using it, in the meantime everybody should downgrade to the most stable Android L rom and share their experiences between 6.0.x and 5.x.x
I've had no such problems with 6.0 even with more than 50 apps installed. It is smooth and fast. You should probably try AOSP 6.0.

This is why I'm moving to the Galaxy J7. Temporary solution is to use any stable rom that is on Lollipop or Kitkat.

I've read that a factory reset has helped some people. You could also try to format your SD card ( I don't think its necessary, though)
Using cyanpop n its damn good and stable rom i have ever used.. Battery life if also very good i get easily sot of around 4hrs 30mins with full 1day battery backup.. which is excellent...
ders no word as lag mentioned in this rom.. it works very smooth.. Using as my daily driver since longtime..
Some pretty obvious reasons for lags i would mention and please try them..
- Remove useless system apps using System app remover
- Use greenify and hibernate all apps that u dont use..
- If ur well aware of custom kernals and modifying them then try them ( btw on cyanpop im using the inbuilt kernal provided by dev as its well optimised and as mentioned i have good battery backup with it)
- Try to use alternates for battery draining apps like Facebook has its lite version and many more..
- if your gamer battery will tend to go down at faster rates so don't complain about that ..

I moved back to 5.1 (CM 12.1) and have been using it for a week or more and I will say its a huge difference in battery drain than the CM 13 6.0. So far I can go 3 days on 5.1 with moderate use Pandora 3g streaming and wifi usage. Idk what the issue is with 6.0 on the Moto G 2014 but it just eats the battery like crazy; even with greenify and a battery saver it seems to not help one bit on 6.0.
So far I am very happy with CM 12.1 on this phone I will keep trying 6.0 each time a update is out to see if the drain is improved but I dont have high hopes for this device on 6.0.
Android 6.0 in general is laggy for our phones. IDK why, but I am currently running CM13 and gaming perfomance has been deteriorated a great deal when compared to CM12.1 or stock L, and there are touch micro-delay issues (Geometry Dash is unplayable). The ROM is stable for daily use with great battery life, though, and I like it but if you like gaming then just stay on Lollipop. IDK about gaming ROMs for our phones, and I have less options since Thea's ROM diversity is smaller than Titan's, although kernels can be cross-flashed, but most custom kernels give me stability issues.
TL;DR: Want perfomance? Stay on L.

What ROM do you have installed for daily use and why? I use CM11 because I like the ability to update to the nightly version using CMupdater and it is stable and customizable enough for me.

In my opinion..
Okey, so I forgot about flashing other roms when i installed vanir, battery life is awesome, deep sleep all the way when you dont use it, maybe because of the kernel, latest nyghtly was a little bit anoying because it kept rebootin and freezing but meeh...understandable if your are using kitkat on a phone thats not ment to have kitkat..
Other good rom is Paranoid android,...pure stock android, fast and stable, but battery life sucks..
In my opinion for Battery vanir works well for me, and stability is paranoid, i havent tried latest cm snapshot, i am about to.
have tried most of the roms... for some reason vanir and tesla doesn't give me good battery backup (doesn't last for a day).. have been using pacman nightlies now and it has given me good battery life(lasts more than a day with wifi, some reading and calls).. do you guys use any app or change settings in vanir to get good battery life?
Surprised not to see many CM11 people here. I use that since I assumed it'd be the most stable, but I haven't really tried anything else.
I use CM11 M12. I figure since all the roms are CM based anyways and I don't really care for the themes and customizations they add, might as well go to the stable source and add my own mods as I please.

I am on the latest nightly and my phone shut off today and wouldn't stay on until I plugged it in to charge despite it reporting %50 battery left. I think my phone may be having an issue with reporting proper battery level but I don't know if it is CM11 related. Cyanogen are the only ROMs I have ever used on my phones, but now I am thinking about flashing Pacman to see if it has the same problem with my battery.
I use stock mexican 4.1.2 far the best and most stable rom. I love all the features from 4.4.x roms but all they make the phone sluggish.
And if Motorola betrays us again (not releasing 4.4 or 5) that would be the last motorola roms that I would ever use again.

Why people keep saying Moto? It will be most like ATT betrayal instead as moto already gave them the finished update. Blame ATT not Moto.

Releasing 5.0/5.0.1 will not happen for us in the form of official update from Moto. We all already know that.

I use any ROM that has pie controls in it. Lately it's Validus. For this phone, pie controls is my favorite and required feature. The navigation bar takes up too much screen real estate, and making the buttons smaller makes then harder to press! Pie all day er day.

I've tried CM11. Pac Rom. And Mokee. I'm digging Mokee lately.
Since official update missing from too long time in latest months I have searching for alternative ROM or MOD since I cannot spend a lot of money for a new smartphone again after only a couple of years and with stock ROM Optimus for some reason is more laggy than smartphone far less powerful.
Unfortunately in all I have found some issue and problems, so now I'm wondering what are the ROM\MODS more used by the P880 community on XDA..
Eventually a list of not-working things (eg missing radio, broken GPS, unusable MHL HDMI out etc.) would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Everything working with BlissPop 3.2.
I am using CM 11 nightlies and I am waiting for its final release !
after more than 1 year of flashing many ROMs, I think I've found my best tradeoff with this: omni-4.4.4-20150520-p880-FINAL
No bugs for my use and excellent smothness.
The only drawback is the long time required to turn mobile data ON.
To keep the thread alive..
My experience after 2 years using this phone and custom roms:
- phone is s**t (but I do not intend to buy a new one, so here goes..)
- Used some recommended roms laying around, but here are some roms I tested and used for longer period.
- I use phone for everyday use. I want lagfree, fast and good battery life (at least in deep sleep). I mostly use some simple apps, browsing, messages, pdf books, camera and video recording.
1. CM11 (4.2.2.)
Great rom, with some bugs, but nothing serious.
Occasional lags, good battery life - some builds were awsome (less than 0,3%/hour batt consumption).
Maybe little too slow occasionally.
2.CM11 (4.4.4)
Also great rom, with some nice features, much more polished than 4.2.2. At start there were great builds, but after some time it got worse. Probably kernel related.
Quite good speed, some lags, quite good batt (but not so good as 4.2.2).
If you did not restart phone in a while, it got very laggy - at least second period of rom development.
3.MAHDI FINAL
Best rom - is`s features are endless. Great for customising everything, quite good speed, but laggy from time to time - when you most need it! Battery similar to CM11 4.4.4, but better with speed. Quite good, but too much lag for me.
3.MOURTA LS+KERNEL
Best rom I used becouse of smoothness, features and customization of whole rom. Really smooth.
BUT it has a bug with gapps - if you do not google enable update service(s) - it does not go to deep sleep.
And MAJOR DOWNSIDE - worst batt life of all the roms I used. Tried everything, but batt life did not get any better. Especially when you use the phone - batt drains as hell.
So I got a felling that all this speed and other goodies comes with bad batt.
I can do this on my own, with any rom, by putting governor to performance
Too bad for this rom... Goodbye!
4.OMNI 4.4.4. final
So I tried this recommended rom - after reading some forum posts.
It is not so great with features (some of them I miss), but it is almost lagfree, quite fast, good batt life..
Maybe only rom I used, that is stable and fast enough for everyday use..
I miss some functions and LS speed , but for now - I am satisfied.
For the end
- I did not tried any custom kernels, at least for longer period. Had a felling they all got too bad batt life for my taste.
- tried also scripts and tweaks 2.2, but I did not notice any big improvment over my demands (stable, fast, batt).
And it would be great if we all together find the best rom for everyday use ?!
And maybe upload the zips to some cloud, for later generations to use ?
I personally would like to get CM11 4.2.2 builds.
And CM11 unofficial builds to try.
That would be great, if whole LG 4x community could create final ROM for our phone - with everything done, and working as it shoud be.
Personally I use Resurrection Remix 5.4.5 ROM. Pretty good performance and battery life after some tweaks (Power Nap, disabling some wakelocks etc.). But it wasn't updated since May 2015 Sometimes it's going crazy: interface, and system crashes, but that's ocassionally (every day ? - f%#&#).
This phone is S%$t, and sometimes I want to throw it through the window... But i'm poor xD
Blisspop 3.4
CM 11 3.14 Nightly
Some times I get no signal and the phone wont wake up from deep sleep but most of the time it's not bad at all.
Yeah bros, i totally understand you all...Every ROM i used (some for short, other for long periods of time) eventually turned to be ****. I of course dont blame not one dev, as their doing their best to keep alive a crappy smartphone. Right now i use for some time the CM 12.1 i think, as it was the most (at least) usable ROM, whitout huge bugs and a whole lot of lag. There were a lot of times i wanted to burn this useless piece of **** and throw it out the window...But finally the time has come. I ordered a LG G4! Comming next week. I will miss you all out there, as we shared strugle... :crying::crying::highfive:
I want an update to this survey. Still I haven't found a ROM where everything works. In some ROM doesn't work correctly the GPS, in other ROMS I aren't able to scan QR codes. other ROMS have TV out broken, fm radio broken or videocamera not fully functional or with worsened quality... other ROMS are laggy or with freezes.
This is a 1,5 Ghz quad core with 1GB ram, is an outdated device but still far more powerful than many entry levels in the marked that are released with recent Android OS version and are way faster despite their hardware.
What are the most newer ROM fully working for daily use?
MoltenMotherBoard Lollipop 5.1.1
The only not-working stuffs, that I know of, are QR code scanning and FM radio. QR code scanning can never be fixed for grouper blobs based ROMs. FM radio is never a critical feature. Most custom ROMs choose to ignore this for most Android phones, not just LG O4X.
If you ever build the ROM from source, then you will appreciate this Lollipop ROM that it is preserving most of the pristine Google AOSP experience as much as possible.
Unfortunately for me that my taste of Android OS has been less than desirable until Lollipop. It is my personal choice that I won't look back on anything lesser than Lollipop on my Android phone. This is also one of the reason I am staying away even from LG stock JB ROM. If we take away issues with OS aging, then we hope to be able to declare that stock ROM should be perfect. But I can tell you that for LG O4X, LG had failed this.
In short, I just want to tell you that it is very rare to find custom ROMs matching the functionalities of stock ROM perfectly. If you had to take the route of custom ROMs, then you need to choose base on features that matter most for your usage.
Is there any rom with sustained performance and stagefright fixes (maybe f2fs for perfomance)?
I don't really care if its 4.3, 4.4 or 5.1
As long as it has halfway decent battery life (I know the tegra3 is power hungry) and it doesn't have seconds of lag in whatsapp like the stock rom, I am happy.
I am like you, tried many Rom's untill today. I think our P880 is same but there is something different, I know devices have same parts but somehow different.
I mean some Rom works for me very well but same rom for another friend dosn't work as it's supposed to be.
Lately I am using Euphoria for daily driver. I like LP features. Jb or Kit Kat doesn't satisfied me. And I decide to buy new phone because like I said before P880 's hardware doesn't enough anymore. I think I will buy Z5.

Yes, I do agree with u on the fact that our devices are somewhat different from one another and we are having somewhat difficult time in coping with the new OS provided that our hardware are a bit outdated. However, I think this phone is really endurable and I am very satisfied with this, I have been using this phone for almost three years and it still function as it is so I have to say I am impressed. Currently I am trying out cm11 and mahdi 4.4., I have to say cm11 is rock stable but I would say mahdi has a lot of customizable features that I like. So it is quite difficult to choose among them. But for LP rom, I think it requires way too much resources that our phone might not be able to cope with.

For me Stock (ICS) is good as it provide me best battery life for charging, usage, camera, wifi etc

hows the battery life with Nougat roms on Moto X 2014?
is any good to use as daily driver?
will the moto display still function with these custom roms?
pls share and recommend which you tried. thanks
Moto Display doesn't work on any custom ROM. Refer to the hundreds of threads posted about that already.
I use the last CM14.1 nightly as a daily driver with no real issue. About the same battery as stock, maybe slightly better. I'd wait to see what the future looks like for more custom ROMs since CM is shut down, or look at an AOSP base, or wait for LineageOS.
From what I saw, battery life on Resurrection Remix was a bit weaker than expected.
Pay special attention to the camera, as it's been pretty buggy on every custom ROM I've tested lately. The community keeps acting as if it were no big deal, but not being able to record video is not a minor flaw.
Don't ask me how, but I get this once in a while on CypherOS 3.5. Has been extremely stable for me as well.

Hi, I have just flashed Nougat 7.1.1 factory image and it is notlaggy as previous nougat image.
But, IDK, I was having issues with Pixel launcher and ram usage, went to CM 14.1 but phone was laggy aF.
As I think, this will be the latest Nougat or Whatever update We will be receiving for this device.
And I wanted to know if I should keep stock nougat running for a few weeks [No FC's, no Restarts, No Issues so far] or if I should change to a AOSP rom.
Based on your personal experience, [And if you have traveled this route before], What would you recommend?
Stock Nougat 7.1.1 N4F26M or Any other AOSP [Tell me your favorite ones, without that extreme menu settings or linux shell to make it a daily driver]
I think more of a ROM for the looks, combined with good performance... Loved the Pixel Launcher tho! but it is not optimized correctly.
Miui is far behind on software version and no oficial port.
CM is dead
LineageOs is not eligible "Yet" for my daily driver [this is my only phone for now]
Do not like menu settings with a lot of banners and 'notification bar settings extended"..
I do want, performance settings, maybe a different kernel with the rom.
Hope you can help me!

Why don't you give it a try to PureNexus ROM. Its fast, very stable and with very few bugs, if any, plus you get that Pixel like experience. It gets updated at least monthly, if not more often.
To me, it looked more stable that CM 14.1, I see that especially when I use Snapchat, which runs much better in this ROM. Dont get me wrong, stock Nougat is very good but does not have so many features as PureNexus has.
Cheers
uberstock is very nice and stable and not filled with too many extras....no issues for me so far.....link is in my signature
I'm having better experience with AOSP, I'm now running EmotionOS and the kernel it includes, I don't know if it has a custom one, If it doens't replace the kernel, I'm using it with Franco Kernel. Coming from the latest stock 7.1.1, is a much better experience IMO. Give it a try to Emotion OS with pico gapps.
Pure Nexus is amazing in terms of performance and most importantly the battery life. I am not talking about SoT or otherwise, I will tell you as a very layman experience. You use your phone, do whatsapp, surf facebook and browse during the day with all other normal activities of your life and PureNexus can easily give you 24hours or more of the charge without compromising the features and performance. I think you should try PureNexus AND stay with it for a week. Do not judge the battery life of a rom in a day or two, let it tune itself after a couple of charge (complete) discharge cycles and you'll be ok with it.

Well I use the kernel that comes with it, since I don't feel the need to mess with other kernels. It gives me pretty good battery life and rock solid performance. I use Kernel Adiutor only to enable Double Tap to wake feature.
If you want to change things a little bit then Franco Kernel works good as well. I used it but messed it up and the phone started making funny things, restarts and such. But then again I didn't knew what I was doing at the time, so I let it go completely. Other users though had very good experiences with it.
I'm very tempted to try Pure Nexus ROM, I'm a purist always used only stock and no root, in fact I miss marshmallow and how fluid it was, but anyway kind of happy with nougat. Now that seems that 7.1.1 is buggy (speakerphone issue) I won't side load that update til we know the issue is fixed. So do you guys know if that ROM somehow fixes that annoying increasing ringtone and tone sounds when a message arrives in Nexus 6? I already read the goodies the ROM have posted by you guys, what else do you gain with this ROM? Many thanks.

Also, can we expect a 7.1.2 on this phone?
Thanks

I've not experienced any lag... 7.1.1 with Franco Kernel.
We will not get 7.1.2. It's been confirmed by Google. Security updates will keep coming for a while longer though.
In preparation for that I nuked my phone yesterday and for the first time flashed a custom ROM. Trying out Pure Nexus, and if anything it feels smoother. Probably a placebo result from wiping...
I've noticed a lot of lag with 7.1.1 and reduced battery life. I've considered going back to MM, but am not sure if I'l get the security updates. Below 40% battery the lag is pretty bad, the phone is hardly usable below 20%. I've used different Kernels in the past, but want to keep it on a locked bootloader so I can use Android pay without having to constantly play cat and mouse with google and find ways to trick the phone in to passing the safety net. This was a great phone until 7.1.1
Agree on most parts, marshmallow feels more fluid and stable but now is in the past.

N6, 2 years old. Nougat 7.1.1 speaker echo fix. ROM:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=59561445/
After flashing this lite pre-rooted stock ROM I've deleted stuff I don't use.
I am using only apps that have a black/dark interface or the blacked out apps of TBO-team.
No lag, battery life enough for 1 day. Wireless charging at night.
Just for interest, why did you choose this ROM? When LineageOS issues a ROM based on 7.1.2 I'll probably give it a go. I'm no connoisseur of ROMs, but it's good to know the possibilities.

That question needs a rather long answer.
I've tried several N6-Roms including Cataclysm and CM.
Cataclysm was a mod of the stock version. That's why I preferred Cata. But Cata is gone.[emoji26]
I choosed the lite stockROM of Danvdh because it's debloated. I need only to remove Gmail and G-messenger and not used language and keyboard stuff.
I like performance so my N6 is not encrypted.
Also don't use Assistant.
After deleting G-stuff etc, I added the following :
Aquamail, Signal, Black Keep, Black G-app, the speaker echo fix, double tap2wake and a black layer for the settings.
For now my N6 is performing very well. I think I will keep it this year and maybe longer.
I keep an eye on One Plus 3T and Lineage for Android updates.

Many wont use LOS due to it having the same issues that CM has had for years. Kinda disappointing really. Also remember that the LOS/CM team are the slowest to update their versions. Sometimes almost a year later.
