***Nook Colors manufactured after May 2011 shipped with a different partition scheme, see post 2 for information about it, or just go ahead with the guide since it doesn't affect much! You can identify these nooks as they have a blue dot sticker on the box***
A gentle reminder, this thread should only be for discussion related to the guide itself. Any CM7/10 related issues should be discussed in the appropriate threads either in General or the Development forum. Thanks!
On with the good stuff:
Prologue
This guide is intended to take you through the (mostly windows-based) steps needed to replace your internal nook color rom with CM7/CM9, gapps and clockworkmod or TWRP recovery all on EMMC. This will work coming from any previous rom, including the latest stock software (excluding dual boot set ups, not supporting that here), no previous rooting is needed for a new nook, however don't forget to boot stock and register the device before flashing to CM7/10.
At this point in CM7 development I am recommending installing a CM7.2 build by mrg666 from this thread or an official nightly/stable 7.2 directly from CyanogenMod: http://get.cm/?device=encore
CM10 is based on Android 4.1 (Jellybean) and builds can be found here: http://get.cm/?device=encore or mirrored here: http://techerrata.com/browse/cm/encore/nightly
If you want to run CM7/10 from the sdcard.. you're in the wrong place! Go check out verygreen's thread here for CM7 or here for CM10.
ALWAYS check the md5 hash for the files you are downloading to make sure you don't have corrupted files. This is a great windows utility to do that: http://code.kliu.org/hashcheck/
On with the guide:
Download 1gb TWRP image from here OR 1gb CWM 3.2.0.1 sdcard image from here. MD5 of .zip: 1319739d33642ed860e8044c3d55aa56. (I made this based on work in this thread. credit: to cmstlist and DizzyDen, and kevank for hosting). You really only need the 1gb image for this guide, no matter what the size of your card is. A smaller image will burn faster, and when you're done with the guide you can reformat the card anyway.
Extract the twrp or clockworkmod .img (if you can't open the file use 7zip)and burn to sdcard using win32diskimager (free). These apps will need to be "run as administrator." If you're not sure how to do this see step 3 here. ***Some internal laptop/desktop readers will not work to do this, you may need an external USB reader if you run into problems.***
While that's burning:
Download CM7 or CM10 from the links above.
Download either CWM 3.2.0.1 flashable .zip from here or TWRP 2.x flashable zip from here.
For CM7 -Download the latest gapps gingerbread needed for market/google services) from http://goo-inside.me/gapps/gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip
For CM10 download gapps-jb-20121011-signed.zip from here or here
Once your sdcard is done, copy all those files to the sdcard - DO NOT unzip them
Power off your nook. Put the sdcard in, and power on, the nook will boot from sdcard into TWRP or clockworkmod depeding on which you used. TWRP is touch based and easy to use. Navigate in CWM using the vol up/down keys, N button to accept, power button to go back.
Optional: At this point if you want to make a backup of your current EMMC rom (stock or whatever else you're running) you can. Just go to backup.
Go back and navigate to Install .zip from sdcard/Choose .zip
Flash the files in this order:
1. cm .zip
2. gapps
3. Clockworkmod or TWRP .zip
Once you've flashed the files; in the clockworkmod main menu select "wipe data/factory reset" or in TWRP choose factory reset from the wipe menu.
Go back to the main menu, remove the sdcard
Format the sdcard in your computer as fat32 (or use another sdcard) and put it back in the nook and then press reboot system. (CM7 requires the use of an sdcard for storage - thanks pmilford for the tip)
Once you boot into CM7/10, you'll be presented with a welcome screen and you can add your google acct. You need to have wifi access here (obviously..) so hit menu on the status bar and you can set up wifi.
DONE!
Epilogue:
Now you can format the sdcard to use as a storage card in your nook.
To boot into recovery in the future (in order to update to a newer cm7 build/new kernel or make backups) simply hold down power and then choose reboot - recovery from the menu.
If you want to *gasp* restore to stock 1.2.0 flash nemith's stock image (update-nc-stock-1.2-signed.zip) from here using a recovery sdcard.
In CM7: For those looking to get a honeycomb feel to their Nook, I'd recommend this theme. Download the .apk and install it with file manager (or another of your choice), then go to the Theme Chooser app and scroll all the way left and select the theme (name/picture is broken but theme works). Once you've applied it, reboot. (Credits mad-murdock, Bawb3, haxzamatic and joenathane)
In CM7: To set your CPU/Overclock options go to Menu-Settings-CyanogenMod Settings-Performance.
CM7 for the nook color includes mad-murdock's tablet tweaks, so be sure to set up your preferences in the tablet tweak settings also found in the CM settings menu. Some apps, or you, will hide the status bar (eg watching a full screen video) so I like to set "unhide key" to home so that the N button will show the status bar again.
If you're having market problems see this thread for fixes. (Thanks jalexishg)

Updating to a newer nightly build
Download latest nightly from CM and put it on the sdcard that's in the nook. Easiest way is to either download it directly on the nook itself, or download on pc and use usb drive mode to copy it to the nook sdcard.
Reboot to recovery (from power menu)
Wipe cache
Install zip from sdcard, flash the new nightly .zip
Reboot

Information for new nook partitions
B+N have made a change as to how they partition the internal storage space on the nook. New nooks are now shipping with new partitions and you can identify these as they have a blue sticker on the box.
Old partitions: 1GB for data (i.e. apps), 5GB for media (books/music/whatever else)
New partitions: 5GB for data, 1GB for media (if you need more media space you use your sdcard)
Clockworkmod 3.2.0.1 (released 6/5/11) is now able to flash roms on the new partition scheme, however you may prefer to restore the old partition method if you like more onboard space for your own files and don't need 5GB for data (apps)
Current options for installing CM7 on the newer partitioned nook are:
1) Just follow the guide above with cwm 3.2.0.1, keep 5GB /data and 1GB /media
2) Follow this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094371 to repartition your nook into the older 1GB data/5GB media, and then go back to the top and follow my guide. If you want to repartition using the .zips in DeanGibson's thread, you can flash them using the CWM SD you make in steps 1+2 of my guide above, then go on and flash CM7.
Awesome! I was *just* starting to look for a guide for getting up to 3.0 now that school is done You rock! Perfect timing.
This needs to get pinned if it isn't! Thank you so much!
Can you include instructions how to revert to stock for those "just in case" moments?
Also, maybe include a step if a person wants to install tweaks?

Nice guide.
awesome clean strait forward guide! =D thanks!
So this updates to 2.3? I thought this CM7 image was for 3.0? Is there another one I can use to get the 3.0 features?

CM7 has always been 2.3, not sure where you read otherwise. There's some honeycomb ports available built from the sdk as source isn't out, feel free to try them, although IMO CM7 is the most stable rom for the nook.
I tried to install CM7 on my nook color and i didnt follow the proper method and instead saved the CM7 file to the root of my sd card and installed the zip through clockworkrecovery without wiping or cache and now im stuck at the android boot screen. It isnt the CM7 skateboard android boot but rather the plain android root boot screen. If anyone could help it would be helpful thank you! IM crying right now about it

This isn't really the place for this post, but if you go back to the first post and look under Epilogue no.4, there's a link to the restore thread.
I've been trying to make a backup of my froyo system in recovery and it keeps on saying that the /system cannot be mounted. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm currently auto-nooted, which leaves the default Nook reader software intact. Will installing CM7 also leave the default Nook reader intact?
*** NVflash Toolkit - Backup, Restore, Resize, Recovery, Rescue ***
**** NOOBS READ THIS ****
What is the first thing you see when you boot up your phone?
It will be one of three things:
1. A white LG logo - you are running the original bootloader and partition layout.
2. A pink LG logo - you are running the new bootloader with the new partition layout.
**** It is important to know which one you are on before using nvflash or flashing any roms ****
I have put together a little toolkit to make NVflash a bit easier to use for the most common functions. The toolkit is still a work in progress, so not everything may work as intended! I would advise taking a nandroid backup to your external SD card and copying any important files from your internal SD to somewhere safe before trying this out. This version is for the original partition layout.
First, download and unzip the toolkit to your PC, it is available here: NVflash_Toolkit_0.2.zip - 218.14 MB
Second, connect your phone in NVflash mode (battery out, Volume UP+DOWN buttons pressed, connect to USB) and install the NVflash drivers if necessary (they are included in the download)
Third, run the nvflash-toolkit.bat batch file which will guide you through the functions.
After each NVflash attempt, I would recommend disconnecting and reconnecting the phone before the next flash - I had problems trying to recover the data partition in the same nvflash session as intitialising the partition layout.
The Internal SD card partition is too large to recover using NVflash, but you can mount the backed up internalsd.img file using something like DiskInternals Linux Reader if you want to access the files on it.
***NEW ICS TOOLKIT*** NVflash_ToolkitICS_02.zip - 291.39 MB
This is for the new ICS partition format with unlocked bootloader included.
1. Backup internal partitions (useful for rooting any new builds)
2. Flash v28e ICS rom or backed up partitions using new LG partitition table
3. Revert to gingerbread partition layout with normal and large (ICS) partition size (no rom included, boot to CWM only)
4. Restore ICS data partition
I will add more functions later...
Let me know if there are any other useful NVflash functions it would be worth putting into the toolkit. My initial version has a supersized option as well as large which has a larger 2Gb Data partition. Would it be better to have a 1Gb system partition rather than 512Mb in the supersized partition layout so that it is useful for anyone who is using dual boot? Also, I have put in v10b as a rescue rom for now, but I could put in a different one there, or even have a selection of rom images that could be used for a quick rescue of the phone. Tell me which you think would be the most useful one to have, since nobody actually uses v10b any more!!
Changelog
Version 0.2 - Fixed CWM 5.0.2.8 installation, Rescue rom now includes CWM 5.0.2.8
Thanks to Koush for his indispensable CWM recoveries, Rusty! for his NVflash recoveries which inspired me to make this script, and the search button for teaching me everything I know.
do you think this can be usefull with the RCs cm10 since we don t have any space left in system

The main reason I made this was because it's going to be a struggle fitting modified ICS and CM10 roms into the original system partition, but we still want to use the original unlocked bootloader if we can get kernels that are compatible.
There are various threads with tips on how to use nvflash to change partition sizes, or go back to a stock rom in an emergency, or flash a recovery, but I thought it would be worth making a one stop shop for all the common nvflash functions. Also I haven't seen any discussions in the O2X forums about using nvflash for backup and restore, so those are the functions I am not quite so confident about yet...
Hi
I wanna thank for yet another fantastic tool. Trying it as writing. I have a wish for an updated resque rom like 20s if possible. And maybe add the dual boot development as an additional feature.
Anyways, great work

I'll probably put up versions with different rescue roms. AT the moment I'm most likely to be switching between LG leaks with the totally insane new partition layout (what the hell is that AP2 partition 6 all about?), and good old fashioned roms with a bigger system partition for better tweakability. I'll do a CM7 stable release, and then add a CM10 once it the milestone build is out.
Might not happen immediately as I am playing around with all the new leaks and my batch file is a mess just now because of all the switched partition numbering and tweaking it to help me use bitdomo's root method.
This is the Linux version, I hope will be useful.
INSTALLATION:
Decompress RAR and copy its contents into the folder NVflash_Toolkit_0.2
EDIT:
Correction of error in v0.2 and uploaded new version ICS

Thanks for that. I don't have a Linux machine at the moment.
If you have one you could try injecting the superuser files into a backed up v28 system image and then copying it back to the phone. That's how I was going to try rooting the v28 roms, and it might be simpler than the rather roundabout method of doing it using the old bootloader and recovery.
Not sure how that would work with file ownership and permissions though - my Linux skills are very rusty.

Better late than never, great work. It is now easier to work with NVFlash
I have several NVFlash to CWM recovery and with system.img rooted.
The only problem is that with ICS I cannot mount the file system correctly, and course, if I don't ride I can not modify its contents.
But I'm still doing tests.

There's still more chance of doing it in Linux as all the windows toold for reading EXT filesytems are read only.
I've just made a cfg file for the new ICS partitions layout, but without an unlocked bootloader and recovery it's not much use as nvflash cannot properly write the encrypted bootloader.
I'm going to try wkpark's unlocked bootloader for the SU660 and see what happens....

We need a new version of CWM compiled for the new partition layout, but the unlocked bootloader is great. I'm just uploading and nvflash version in the big ICS leak thread and will be updating my toolkit with a version for the new ICS partition layout with a few useful tools.

Sir rmein, I apologize now if my question is nubbish but you can add a tool to the option to back up only the data partition? In the section up to the number 3 option also includes the system and I think it would be a good thing that the two options are separated.
Thank you for your attention and for the great job you did with the tool.

Just uploading a toolkit for ICS partition layout which includes that function, and then I will go back to do another version of the GB toolkit to make that easier and include a supersized system partition which can fit dual boot roms.

Q&A for [RECOVERY][golden] TWRP 2.8.1.0
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for [RECOVERY][golden] TWRP 2.8.1.0. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!

Is that version 2.8.3.0 is planned ?
Thanks
There's a version 2.8.3.0 on the Team Win website for S3 Mini, is there a reason to use this one over that?

Sure
What's new in 2.8.3.0:
MTP fixes and improvements - you can now copy zips to the root of storage - thanks to _that
MTP will now tell the host PC that storage is removed instead of disabling MTP completely
MTP will now report the correct max file size based on the file system in use to the host PC (may fix transfer of large files)
Update and improve fix permissions and make fixing contexts optional
Update SuperSU in TWRP to 2.40 and update install process
Make TWRP work properly on AArch64 (Nexus 9 is now built in true 64-bit binaries and libraries)
Attempt to set correct permissions and contexts on all files placed in storage so backups will show in Android
Fix kernel panic during MTP start on some devices
Support unicode fonts on devices with True Type Font support
Fix slider value not showing sometimes (vibration settings page)
Toggle MTP off during adb sideload to set correct USB IDs
Reduce library requirements for 5.0 L decrypt
Other minor fixes and improvements
What's new in 2.8.2.0:
MTP fixes and improvements - you can now copy zips to the root of storage - thanks to _that
Pull in all changes from Android 5.0 lollipop into TWRP
Add decrypt support for Android 5.0 lollipop encrypted partitions including automatic decrypt when the default_password is in use
Revert some changes to exFAT that were breaking exFAT support on some devices
Other minor fixes and updates
Note: At this time we do not have a GUI representation for pattern unlock. You can still decrypt patterns though by translating the pattern dots to numbers. The pattern dots correspond to numbers in the following pattern:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
So an upper-case L would translate to a password of 14789 entered on the keyboard. Eventually we plan to add a proper pattern unlock to TWRP but it is a relatively low priority at this point.

Stuck after flashing recovery
Guys, I am hoping for a little help here. I followed the instructions as detailed, flashed TWRP in Odin, all seemed ok. But whenever I try to boot into recovery, the phone just hangs at "Recovery booting..." (the blue text with the Samsung Galaxy SIII Mini splash screen.) It still boots into the rom ok (still stock, but with super user). I'm stumped. Any ideas?
The phone is a SM-G730W8 (Golden). Thanks so much!

Hello.
I registered here just to post a problem where i could not find a solution. With android-andi's recovery (2.8.7.0) it boots in recovery but shows only a black screen. It seems to work because of phone vibrates when touching to screen.
Recovery might boot as visible if you try to boot recovery enough many times. Another funny thing is if you boot it as black screen, put it charger and force boot with power button then it boots straight to recovery and it is visible.
I tried also older andi's recoveries and they booted also as black screen but charger trick not worked with enough old recovery. I havent had any issues with maclaws recoveries and those are worked fine and thats why I am using maclaws recovery atm (the newest version from maclaws site).
Seems to that i can't report this in developers thread because of I am new in xda forums.
One thing, how i can send/attach files in forum? I have recovery log but not managed to send it...
Sorry my english and try to understand .
Anyone else have black screen issues with andis's recoveries? And what is system here to upload logs as txt files here forum becouse can't find option ti upload nothing else than pictures.
NTFS and USB Mass Storage support
Why TWRP didn't recognize NTFS?
In TWRP it shows that the Micro SD is non existent (0MB).
I use this file system because is very fast and stable.
Also,it will be awesome if you add Mass Storage support (it's much more fast than MTP).
How is it that TWRP recovery image file is smaller than that of stock, but is damn much more versatile?
Fantastic dev work.
hey guys
so ive got a pixel 3a and my main goal for a long time on any phone was to get a full working native version of ubuntu to boot to my phone. Well this is now possible thanks to developer fredldotme and his porting of ubuntu touch to the pixel 3a sargo and pixel 3a xl bonito.
well i tried it and it was missing something... anbox doesnt work for it yet and as i still need my android apps for so many things i have to rethink my plan. My main reasoning for the full version of ubuntu is compiling and development. I build kernels and ive been working on learning app building and os building. Apps like termux with proot are great but i need what they dont supply ie full functionality of the os.
now with the lg v20 and similar phones a hack was made by doitalljosh that allowed you flash the laf partition and put the ubuntu iso on an sd card and boot from download mode. the pixel 3a doesnt have that so what i would like to do is use the avb partition scheme a bit to my advantage and do about the same.
so what im looking for is help to repartition the internal storage or userdata to so that i can craate my own 8gb ext4 partition to be used as what ever but to mainly to hold an ubuntu system image.
then i plan to flash boot_b with a systemd boot image that will boot that partition. fredldotme`s halium kernel will do the booting just fine after i make a new boot image with it and using the update-initramfs command in the chrooted ubuntu to get the initramfs.cpio.gz .
Can any one help me make a permanant partition.
