Is it my imagination, or has the Nexus 7 gone the way of most Android devices? The development cycle is so tight that anything over a few months old gets cut loose and never sees another update. This seems like a rampant issue. My Galaxy Tab 10.1 will probably never see another update either, and definitely will never see JB. Tablets seem worse than phones too. Someone correct me if I'm way off base here. I completely understand how this has happened, but I don't have to like it. And I wonder how consumers can influence this situation. What is worse, the Nexus 7 has not been superseded by another product yet, and still the updates seem to have completely stopped. I must say that Apple is somewhat better about supporting it's hardware longer too.
What updates are you expecting? There have been no newer versions of Android yet. Not really sure what updates there could be when nothing as been added to Android...
I mean come on, this is a damn Nexus device....it will get the next update...

Not sure I believe we will ever see another OTA update on N7. And I would be disappointed to think that no bug fixes have been found since the last OTA. Then again I doubt anyone will ever push another update to a N7. It's now like my Galaxy Tab 10.1, it "works" so why fix it. By the time a new version worth pushing arrives, the N7 will be incapable of running it. Just my opinion based on past history.

Past history with non-nexus devices!! LOL
What are you going on about? Nexus devices get updates faster than any other devices....and longer support than other devices.

The Nexus 7 is marketed and monitored directly by Google. As soon as Google releases another version of Android publicly (i.e., a stable release with less bugs), then you will be guaranteed to get it before any other device. This is one of the major benefits to owning a Nexus device.
In addition, just because bugs are identified and there may be a rumored fix with it, many good devs will continue to monitor their fix, test it, and see how it does; ensuring that the fix does not create a more bugs (in quantity and severity) than there were in a previous build.
Patience is a virtue. There's a reason why this saying is an aphorism.

I think the Nexus "8" will be out by then and the 7 will be deemed too anemic to run the newer software. As I said, it was just an observation of a phenomenon with the hardware development cycle we have with Android. And yes, the situation is way worse with non-Nexus devices. My Sprint HTC One is pretty buggy and the phones generally seem to all have bugs that may eventually get fixed. But more often than not they just move on to the next big thing and you just have to live with the bugs until you replace the phone and get a whole new list of bugs. You can ROM the phone and sacrifice features along with different bugs of course. Consumer demand has shaped things such that there are never resources to really get existing devices locked down and bug free. There is no incentive for developers to work on existing devices, but always to develop for the next thing going out the door. Apparently there is a known bug in my HTC One that has to do with an incorrectly located file directory causing horrible battery issues. Weeks or months go by with no OTA to fix it.
Google wants every OEM to support devices for at least 18 months, so you can bet that nexus devices will get at least that and probably longer. I'm about 99% sure that the Nexus 7 will get key lime pie at least.

On top of there being nothing new in the world of android for the N7 to be updated to, I'm also curious on what "bugs" the op thinks need fixed?
I'm running latest rasbean on my phone and stock 4.2.2 on the 7 and have literally no bugs on either. Completely functional and stable (neither device has even been rebooted in almost 3 weeks).

There are bugs, fixes and new features in almost every release: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_version_history
Look at the release dates to determine if releases are frequent enough.
Sometimes preventing an OTA update to a Nexus 7 device can be the challenge. Lol!
(still running 4.1.2 on my N7)
I got a Windows Phone 7 and Windows 8 RT Surface so I can experience obsolescence instead of updates. LOL
My two Nexus 7, one Grouper and one Tilapia, will be merrily updated to every new version of Android. I can't wait for more *fragmentation* with the next Android release.
Sorry gotta go run with the low information crowd, there is a protest nearby. ...
Thread is silly. Sorry OP.
Nexus One - Released with 2.1, EOL with 2.3.6 (2010 - 2011)
Nexus S - Released with 2.3, EOL with 4.1 (2010 - 2012)
Galaxy Nexus - Released with 4.0, still supported
Nexus 4 - Released with 4.2, still supported
Nexus 7 - Released with 4.1, still supported
Nexus 10 - Released with 4.2, still supported
Every device has made it through a year's worth at the very least, and that's starting with the Nexus One. At the time when the Nexus One was released, phone hardware was changing almost faster than it is now, and it still got quite a run of updates.
Please do some research before whining. The Nexus 7 hasn't seen an update as of now because there's no update to see.

I had a Galaxy Nexus as well. Actually, the phone I had with the least bugs by the time I traded "up" was probably the Droid X. The Droid X2 was god awful by comparison.
Do you count the Google HTC One and Google Galaxy S4 as "Nexus Land"?

Bad idea if current information is anything to go by. Google doesn't really seem to be doing altogether much more to support these two devices than it does for most-- it'll send the builds of Android as appropriate to the OEMs but it'll be up to them to actually tune everything.

Well, now I have done a complete 180. I have a Sprint HTC One from Ting.com. My bill is a fourth what it was with Verizon or AT&T and I rely mostly on WiFi/VOIP service. Too bad the HTC One is so terrible at holding onto a WiFi signal. I may have to switch back to a Samsung device if Sprint can't resolve this. Ting does support the Galaxy Nexus, among other Samsung phones.
Around here Verizon does have the best coverage BY FAR though.
Am I the only person who wish Samsung would keep us updated. Even a statement like.... we have found a number of issues with lollipop which will take some time to resolve. We want you to have a great experience so we will ensure that when we send out the update you will enjoy the benefits. Please be patient.. We hope to send out the updates by end of April.

The amnoyance in regards to this is that both the Note 3, S4 & S5 seem to have had a wider rollout so far than the Note 4. Likewise Samsung's PR were promising a rollout to Android within a couple of months of its final release when the Note 4 was released and thar seemingly has been abandoned too. It just leads to user apathy and distrust.

Hoping for honesty from the PR arm of an international chaebol is like nicely asking a stone if it wouldn't mind bleeding a bit. It also assumes that they are even remotely interested in providing these kinds of updates, that they communicate with the developers, and that they have that information in the first place. They've done their job already - you've bought a Note 4, so why should they care? Besides which, if they've already stated a timeframe previously, and been unable to meet it, they're going to be very cautious about announcing anything else apart from "it'll be ready when it's ready", and even that is unlikely compared to simply remaining silent.

Sweet. I'll just enjoy that sexy Material OS on gingerbread. Ah nope. Can't do that. What about speed and efficiency? I can enjoy that. Ah nope. Not on GB either. Hmmm. What about those awesome notification cards. Ah nope. Still no luck. Thats ok I'll just make an app to enjoy using Level 21 API. Nope can't do that either. So I can send texts and make phone calls. Awesome. Same thing I could do on my Motorola i560. There are a ton of things to enjoy with Lollipop. I do understand where you are coming from. Lollipop is innovative, fast, beautiful and efficient. Those are things that can be very scary to someone so conservative.

I sincerely hope this post is a joke; if I merely cared about apps I'd own an iPhone.
I bought a 800€ smartphone i espect to have the lastest and best software. Thats why so many people is going from android to iOS. If you have a iPhonne 6+ you have the lastest iOS. Next time a change smartphonne i am going to think twice before have Android or iOS, and for me Nexus line are no option, ugly and overrated. For me Samsung or HTC or LG (this two allready have 5.0 Lolipop)
I updated my Moto X 2014 to lollipop and it made it slower, worse battery and it stuttered more than it did on kitkat. Also with all the problems people were talking about on most of the phones that got the update(not just Samsung) why are people in such a rush? Google really messed up with lollipop.
I would like to get the S6 TW though.

later this year if the iphone 7 competes with the note 6 I will have to consider changing to
iphone ....upgrades are fast on iphone ,works works worldwide every language preinstalled Samsung doesnt) both have good battery the iphone 6 plus better camera in most cases but marginal .the fingerprint
is a joke on note 4 .
im just ranting cause got another error re my names have crashed again. ...grrr

iPhone are great for fluidity and fast updates, but they lack the customization and freedom that android offers even with Jailbreak.
Also , I don't know if you need glasses or not, but the note 4 camera beats the iPhone any day in good light situations...both in photos and videos.

"Google revealed the developer preview of the next big version of its mobile device operating system – Android M – last week during Google I/O 2015, and the release of its final version is due in Q3 2015. Now, you must be thinking if Samsung is too slow in updating its existing smartphones and tablets to the latest version of Android.
Samsung has already improved its software update game starting this year, and it has already rolled out Lollipop update many existing devices. Now, Samsung is already testing beta versions of Android 5.1.1-based ROMs for various existing devices, and we’ve already shown you the upgraded camera app for the Galaxy S6 and the S6 edge that will be released with Android 5.1.1 update for the devices.
Many Galaxy Note 4 users are impatiently waiting for Samsung to release Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update for the device. Well, here’s some good news for those guys. According to our highly placed sources, Samsung is planning to release Android 5.1.1 Lollipop update to the Galaxy Note 4 by the end of July. As usual, we will be the first ones to show you the upcoming ROM running on the actual device."

as an s6 edge user with note 4 i can say. new touchwiz is mostly same with what you are using on your note 4 with lollipop. but 1 exception performance of s6 is just sucks. insane ram usage, lags everywhere, crash etc. and people call it, its best touchwiz performance its basically a lie. its 1 of worst experiences i have ever had with an flagship device.
camera app just has different design capabilities are same pro mode is basically there for note 4 too.
only themes missing. others basically same.

I hope it is not another firmware number change & new theme to be used like the Lollipop 5.0.1
We need full active Lollipop the latest change in toggle, the new camera API 2 with RAW support & the new themes with other Galaxy S6 & Lollipop improvements.
not to forget battery life fix & RAM high usage.
for 32 bit or 64 bit matter I hope they activate 64 bit ability in Exynos version …………… that will be awesome.

How do you know ? I think IF they're ever going to release camera 2 for the Note 4, they're going to do it with 5.1.1 release
---------- Post added at 02:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 02:16 AM ----------
BTW I honestly feel the 5.1.1 update wasnt all that interesting (the CM users have been on it a while). The Nexus users reported some performance improvements but these were mainly due to kernel changes. So if Samsung did some good work there, it might be interesting. Otherwise, the 5.1.1. update is going to be quite a non event in my opinion.
I hope they include themes. As somebody on a non bootable US Carrier version, themes would at least allow me to stop looking at the same damn icons I've had on every Samsung device I've had over the last 5 years!

As we all know, Android Marshmallow will surely be on our great device, the Note 4. Leaked news say that Note 4 users will start receiving the update in February. Galaxy S6 and its brother Edge will be getting it on January, while the Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus will get it this December. According to these news, the new update will have a new TouchWiz. You can see that it is flat and more Material Design. As we all heard (or some of us), that Google is helping Samsung to create a new TouchWiz that will be so light and so materialistic, which as we can see in the link that it is really more beautiful and looks neater than the older versions. Now, will this new TouchWiz be on our Note 4? I believe it will. I know that the TouchWiz on the Note 5 isn't there for Note 4, but I believe Samsung did that to boost the sales of their Note 5 as it got a lot of bad reviews. Now that a lot of people have bought the Note 5, I think we will get this new TouchWiz along the update Android Marshmallow, or Samsung might even decide to keep their boost for the Note 5 and S7, and release the new TouchWiz for the Note 4 in Android 6.1 (maybe?).
What do you think?

This isn't the last list, it will keep updating. Samsung is really good in making phones but they really suck at software... I am close to ditching it, but I got my Note 4 in September which is most likely for me switch to Nexus phones (or even iOS) in the next few years. This isn't the last list, it will keep updating. Samsung is really good in making phones but they really suck at software... I am close to ditching it, but I got my Note 4 in September which is most likely for me switch to Nexus phones (or even iOS) in the next few years. Though, hopefully Samsung will enhance due to the next few years...

Hmmm your right, but what I ment to say was looking at note 3's disapproval for android 6.0, note 4 too may not get android 7.0 when it will be released in the future 1 or 2 years from now.

At that moment independent developers will come to the rescue (hopefully)

Hehe... yea bro! hopefully they would. But sammy has already heading towards 64 bit OS. The exynos note 4 supports 64 bit libs but our snapdragon phone doesn't.
64bit would help our device alot but it won't happen.. 6.1 should probably be our final build but im on cm so ima stay with the note 4

The results are given here. There's nothing more to talk about. Look at how they ditched that poor note 3. I guess android 6.0 will be the last update for our note 4.

Hmmm... choice also matters bro. Those who love pure android experience and want latest android versions prefer CM. But as for me, having the latest android version doesn't matter much for me as I love the stock firmware coz there are so many extra options & features that I may not find it on CM. (Not to forget the s-pen features too). Also rooting & installing touchwiz based kernels & roms is like extra icing on the cake! ^_^
Is any news about marshmallow update? Are those release dates official?
hmmm i don't think that the note 4 will have the new touchwiz in near update but i think that it can be ported to our device buy our extremely talented devs.

Of course it won't, it's going to be the story of S3 and we'll also get it badly optimized, but things will be fixed and ported by someone here, as always.
Now we are with Android 5.1.1 BUT still with the old TouchWize UI except some few visual changes here or their !!!
Samsung policy is always like this .... the older generation get nothing new until the Note 4 is dead officially & removed from Samsung lists.
I sold my Note 4 few months back & I got iPhone 6s (such a cool smartphone), then I decide to buy another Note 4 because of the Stylus I really like to play with it, so I'm keeping mt Note 4 as second phone for my other sim.
accept it like it is, update stuff is not for Samsung or Note 4 enjoy like this way.
if you need fast updates get iPhone (I really recommend it) or Nexus phone, also HTC & LG providing faster updates.

Yes man, iPhone providing smooth & easy way for dealing with stuff, & old iPhones get the new OS even before releasing the new iPhone.
Apps quality are also better in iOS.
in short ...in spite of my short experience with Apple & iOS but believe me iPhone does provide user experience that I can't live without it.
and if Apple will one day provide iPhone with stylus, a Samsung Note like, so many people will leave Samsung for Apple.

Of topic?
This threat is for note 4 marshmallow update.
From wat i saw in both s5 and note 4 neither s5 nor note 4 will have the new touchwiz , u already mentioned the reason cuz both note 4 and note5 are too close in terms of hardware so as usual Samsung decided to go against it's habit and decided not to port the new touchwiZ to note 4 Just to make sure that note5 sales are doing well , and about 6.1 update for note 4 I doubt it will have it I think android 6.0 is going to the last update for note 4 same as note3 that didn't get android 5.1.1 and left with buggy android 5.0 unfortionatly This is Samsung THEY ONLY CARE ABOUT MONEY and ptl dont say That every manfacturer does because they don't do it in Samsung way, anyway I am waiting for the update and if leaks were true that it won't have The latest touchwiz as Samsung used to do with previous notes I will move to another brand mostly the next nexus.
Mainly a rant thread, but seriously LG G4 already getting AD6.0 and now i've read HTC M9 getting 6.0 and A9 getting 6.0.1.
Sammy sold the highest android phones number, and yet they so slow in providing updates, they start testing beta in next month only.

Because Samsung has touchwiz and has to make it perfectly compatible. Takes a while.
That's not an excuse, HTC M9 getting 6.0 tommorow and A9 getting 6.0.1, G4 already getting 6 and G3 started to get it today... Samsung is soo late only now they releasing beta 6.0 to certain GS6 devices.
Yes, it IS an excuse. It is just one that you don't like.
Samsung is updating at the speed they want. I would fully bet that they were intentionally waiting for 6.0.1, as 6.0.0 likely had some issues they wanted to see fixed.

I hope it's true and they learnt from their mistakes, i remember a lot of GS5 users complained about lollipop more than usually, same with 4.3 that was one of the worst updates sammy ever made.
For me, I would rather get a solid update than the fastest update.

That's i hope, the reason for beta testing and delays.
Samsung policies are stupid..They wont release Marshmallow until S7 is out.. ultimately this would be one of the selling point for S7.
I am 100% sure they wont release MM until March16
You are 100% guessing, not 100% sure... Lol

If that would happen, that could backfire so fast specially since 6.0 was released to all other devices. heck G3 and GS5 released same year, yet G3 already getting android 6.0, idk if galaxy s5 will get it, and if it will probably Q2 2016... Samsung support is lacking and need to be changed, but since they beta testing android 6.0 now, i hope they won't use it as an excuse to "delay" it to until GS7 launches.
It's been well known fact Samsung always behind to provide latest update then why one should buy Samsung devices?
Google test everything for their devices before os release so they don't have to wait that's very clear and not difficult to understand their devices always will remain first to get os update. Comparison with LG or HTC have no sense as well as as far as no one have hardware differences as compare to Samsung. Do they have to think about spen? Samsung theme? S health? NO
These are the features needs to modify almost everything to provide support with new os and can only be understand if you have developed something.
They can split the updates to two parts, the main Android 6.0 base update without updating the minor stuff like s health, themes, and just make S Pen compatible, then after short while release a package of updates android 6.0 updates, idk if it possible, but sure as hell Samsung could be faster, again if they put 6.0.1 with as little to no bugs, then i prefer it over rushed release.
why don't Samsung let it customer beta test the new marshmallow update? iphone lets its customer beta test before full release...

They are for the s6 and edge+(UK and south korea). We'll see it in due time.
They must extend it to Note 5 at least.

I think this time a little bit different. They seem want to improve their Rom quality, do it more carefully. Years ago I realize that Sam S series always be first to update because they are flagship and almost no special features like Note series. Absolutely I agree with you about Sam Roms are very different to HTC, LG.
But as Note 4 users, I was very angry about their update: no theme, no new features, no change on S Pen function, quite bad battery life.
Anyway, Samsung as most profitable Android OEM, have to change some points, do something better about update and Rom. We pay more, they do more better!

I want 5.5-5.7" phone. Nexus 6 and 6P fit need but their battery life not so good. Note 5 just enough for me fullday usage only after extreme optimized/tweaked.
