Sprint data question - Sprint LG G4

So I downloaded an app while waiting for my wife to get to the gym and noticed that it downloaded instantly. The app was 40mb. I was curious and had time so i did a speed test, I was getting 96mbps which is insanely fast compared to my 9mbps dsl connection at home. So my question.... do you think i could get away with downloading large files? I was thinking about using it to download steam games when i bought new ones, seeing as how my ATT dsl connection recently got limited to 250gb per month. I would just tether to my laptop and let it download while working out. No torrents, nothing shady, just steam games so it doesnt take up my home data.
How crazy is it that my cell phone has unlimited data and my home internet is limited. What a world huh?

Would sprint just throttle your speed to very slow? If you download lots of data, i think they would slow down your speed. So they can still claim you are unlimited, but just very slowed down so you can't really enjoy it, assuming you are pushing your luck if you download multiple gigabytes of steam data in a short period of time.

Sprint could deproirtize you ab 23 GB but it won't lose speeds. They will make you a lower priority but still good speeds.
Go ahead and do it, good you are getting 96 Mbps.

Sprint actually doesn't thottle
I been using sprint and they don't throttle on the LTE+ network

What plan do you have? Is it the truly unlimited one or one of the ones where they offer 'x' gigabytes before they slow you down to (I believe) 2G speeds. If it's truly unlimited, then you will be fine, just note that you will be "deprioritized" when you surpass 23GB of data usage in one billing cycle and when you are in an area with lots of traffic putting strain on the network. This is barely noticeable 99% of the time from my experience as I often use close to 100GB/month. For more information on this, including why they do this, see HERE. However, if you are on a plan that is throttled after 'x' GB, do not do it. 2G speeds are nearly unusable nowadays. Say goodbye to all video streaming. Pictures will load s l o w l y as will everything else, including basic html websites.
If you are unsure of your plan, see the main page within the Sprint Zone app.

the only time they throttle is if the towers are being upgraded so they can keep consistent speeds to the lte+

Average monthly data usage

Okay, so I have an AT&T N1. I've been in Mexico for the last half of last week. I got my N1 just over two weeks ago. For some insane reason, according to AT&T's website, I've used 2260 mb of data since 5/24. I don't stream movies to my phone (was using iPhone previously), don't download movies to them, nothing like that.
Does this sound even remotely right? It seems so far out in left field for me that I'm really confused as to what's going on. Anyone else have similar usage?
I was looking at my data usage and found it has increased dramatically with my N1. I am on ATT and noticed on a daily basis around 1:00 a.m. I send anywhere from 3.6 - 8.1 megabytes... I don't know what it is or where it goes.
any ideas?

I wanna say before my N1 I was hovering around 700mb monthly. After, like I said, I'm up to 2260. I was using Google Listen to download over 3G, but there's no way it grabbed enough podcasts over 3G to account for this increase.

you sure about that? because i use listen religiously, and guess what, it downloads ALL your subscriptions automatically. go into listen and check all your subsciptions and see if each episode has the size underneath it. if it does, it was downloaded to your device.
this happens to me all the time.
I have my Nexus One for two weeks now, too. In that time, my Nexus One has received approx. 200 MB and sent 10 MB, mostly via WLAN.
To get an overview yourself, go to the dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#* (*#*#INFO#*#*) as described in another thread on this forum. An activity called "Testing" will appear. Select "Battery history". Select "Network usage" from the first drop-down selector, and "Total in all time" from the second one.
A button list will appear with all applications that have contributed to your traffic. Blue is received bytes, red is sent bytes. Just tap the button to get the details.
You might use this data to compare it to the information you got from the provider.

That's a problem alright.
OP, double check what is being synced and how often. If you are traveling internationally, TURN DATA OFF and leech off of wifi where you can.
I've been running around 500mb/month tops since I got my N1. I really don't stream much, and I use wifi instead of 3g as much as possible to save battery. I am just guessing that most of my data use is for the GPS Nav, which I have used occasionally and never on a long trip. I haven't really been worried about data use, since I have an unlimited plan, but I'll definitely remember this for next time I leave the States.
I used 24 GB's last month, but I was also doing a lot of tethering. 2 GB can easily be done in a couple of days depending on what you do...

I don't know for sure, but I have a pretty good idea of what it is. Usage data. Everything you touched, where you touched it, how long you touched it... wow that sounds dirty.
haha, anyway. Usage data. Everything you did on the phone. Every button that was pressed, how many milliseconds you spent doing this or that. How long you spent reading something and what angle the phone was at during that time. Anything and everything they can track, gathered up and sent back to be processed.
What do they do with all that data? I don't know which is more important to them, but they'll use it to make the phone and UI better. Make it smoother and find out what features people do and don't use. They are also going to look at what methods would be best to send advertising to you and sell more AdWords to companies.

No, no no no. I'm much smarter than that. My guess would be the podcasts, I suppose, but I just don't remember getting THAT many. It just shocked me to see such a high number when I expected less (I'm grandfathered in to the unlimited data, but was curious anyways).
I use about 2Gb a month when I do not tether. It goes up from there depending on how much I tether but it rarely goes above 10-11 Gb.
I am also going to be grandfathered into the unlimited data plan and was wondering if some of you who use 10+ GB a month are on AT&T? Any complaints from them about using so much data?
averaging around 4-6gb last few months, some tethering for work and what not. Mainly from playing with new roms and seeing what I like.

I wonder if that is what process 1013 is? I used the *#*#INFO*#*# and could see all the processes and bytes (amazing how much data passes doing a speed test). I could drill in on all of the processes except for 1013 .. it crashed every time and I couldn't find any info on what that process is.
I've been using between 500MB and 1GB since I got the N1 in January. Only one month so far did I actually got over 1GB. Probably most of that is from music streaming and navigation in the car. I'm curious to see how that usage changes when I get my wifi tethering

I'm pretty sure that's the total. Mine was 10075 and crashed as well. I thought I was a pretty heavy user with around 400MB a month

2 Gig data plan questions

I am coming from Sprint and unlimited data so I have no idea how often I actually went over 2 GB. How easy is it to do with no tethering, but I do plan on using Pandora in my car. Should I use wifi when It is available to alleviate some of the use? Never had to pay attention to data use before.
I can only reference my iphone 3gs data usage answering your question, because I haven't been on and checked mine recently, but I would say definitely use wifi when available (why not? Its super fast!) and about the data usage thing, when I had my iphone in never used wifi and there was only one time I went over 2gigs worth of data in the year I had it, and after heavy usage 24/7. And in can't recount why I did go over either... I would say u really don't have much to worry about unless you tether, thats a whole different ball game i could be wrong though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Even when AT&T had unlimited data there was a 5gig softcap that would raise suspicions if you went over it....that being said, for nearly a year I used my Blackberry as my sole internet connection on my home desktop (and played Warcraft online constantly) and never went over 5 gigs. I use wifi at home now and I stay well under 2 gigs easily, and I watch YouTube videos and so forth on a regular basis. Just install netcounter from the market and monitor your usage from the beginning of your billing cycle and you'll be surprised at how far 2 gigs will go.

Thanks
Y'all are all so helpful just like the folks over on the XDA Hero CDMA section.
I will say that it's fairly easy to go over 2 gigs...especially if your using Pandora..Which the 2 other posters failed to mention.
I had my Omnia(Verizon) tethered and used in excess of 65 Gigs a billing cycle. And Verizon never complained..lol
Anyway, depending on how much of Pandora you use, the 2 gigs can go rather quick. It's shady that AT&T did that but there gonna do what they want. I'm currently on the 2 gig data trap with 3 lines(BB/G1/Captivate) and I use almost 2 gigs per line(except my not here yet Captivate) and thats with using wifi at work, home, and at my parents, and I still use a crap load of data.
If you don't HAVE to go to AT&T, I'd stay with Sprint..lol..Just my suggestion.
Hope everything works out.

Using the dialer, type in *DATA# and call it. You'll get a text message saying how much data you've used, and when the next bill starts. Do some simple math, and prorate what you've used over a 30 day period, and see where you stand.
At first I was worried about data, but I did that and I wasn't going to even break 1GB. Since then I haven't even thought about it. Currently at ~500 MB with two weeks left on my billing cycle.
I guess it depends also a lot on how much you are on wifi , if you have wifi at home and/or work, i dont think you are going to ever hit the 2 gb cap.
Yea I'm at 183 mb and have 3 days left on my billing cycle. And don't get it twisted, that's from listening to alot of pandora in the car. Notice that guy said "tethered," keyword there. I wonder how much data pandora uses in the monthly 40 hour cap your allowed.

If you stream a lot of 3G it is easy to go over, especially video.
Go to att.com/myandroid to check data usage. Also, 3G Watchdog app will keep track of your data usage.
That said, my friend had his iPhone 4 for a couple months and uses it quite a bit at work (always switches on wifi at home) and he never even passed 1GB.
I used 7gb of data last month on my captivate, (unlimited data ftw).
But damn bro, would you have waited a little longer, you could have gotten the EPIC XD
Well, presumably he could return his phone and retun to Sprint for the Epic 4g (Sprint's Galaxy S variant on the off chance you don't know), so long as he's in his 30 day return window. If I wasn't grandfathered in on unlimited, I probably would have held out and jumped ship to Sprint when the Epic lands.
Looking at my current data usage in the AT&T app, I will probably hit 1GB this month. I don't think I've done more than 3 hours of streaming radio, but I just flash JH2 and re-install all my apps over 3G, plus I installed the Asphalt 5 demo which includes a separate in-game 102mb data install, so that would explain my usage. I could see occasionally hitting 2GB, though I'm having trouble imaging how you would hit 7gigs in a month unless you were downloading/streaming several podcasts over 3G. I think my podcasts are 150-200mb daily, so I suppose it's possible. But it would be much faster to use wi-fi, so eh...

[Q] Wireless tether? AT&T?

So after rooting with unleash the beast, it added wireless tether to my phone...
i am very excited about this but i am slightly concerned about actually using it. I have heard people talk about At&t being able to tell you have been tethering by how big your data packages are..
so what i am asking is.. is this concern over rated? can they and do they really check? and how many of you are wireless tethering with your captivate?
btw i have had the unlimited data package deal since iphone 3g so i still get "unlimited" data instead of 2gb limit
thanks in advance, and sorry if this is a stupid Q that has been answered b4
Could they find out - yes; do they, probably not; BUT if you do hit up against the 5Gb limit of unlimited a lot they will start looking. It is not easy, but they can do packet inspection and easily infer that your traffic is PC based and not phone based. If you use this as your primary internet connection at home you will get caught. If you tether now and then, you should be fine.
And don't apologize, use the search function.
I have seen guys post up their bills that showed 30+ gigs for multiple months! Said it was even from torrent downloading! I use it in the summer as my main connection usually ~3-4 gigs for 3 years now and have never had a problem.

I blew it out of the water this moth and they didn't seem to care
Never had a problem. I don't download really huge amounts of data on a tethered connection (leave that for other times). Normal use, such as web surfing, emails (with normal attachments) streaming video, etc should never result in any issues.
I've not experienced any issues. I don't use that much data however. I think the largest at one time was when I had to download Kies on my netbook when I was out of town. Other than that 200MB at once, it's nothing more than normal web usage.

Seconded... I use my phone frequently for work which involves vpn + mutliple ssh sessions for 8 hours a day when I am away from the office and I usually hit about 2gb. To hit 5-10-20gb, you have to be running torrents or something stupid. That's insane.
That being said, I use wireless tethering and don't pay the additional tethering fee. I've done this for a year on AT&T and did it for years on Sprint (man, I miss their data network!) without any problems or charges.
I hit 5 to 10 gigs a month for the past six months. My phone is my major internet connection. That said, the only time I've tethered is for a friends youtube addiction and about once a week for the s wifes iphone 20 mb cap on apps. No problems, but I've been waiting for em to throttle me down to edge.

[Q] Wifi tethering: native android vs ATT?

So with flashing a custom rom with 2.2, there's obviously the "mobile AP" function that's built into 2.2.
But my question is this: with ATT coming out with a $-per-month wireless tethering plan, will there come a time when they will be able to detect if we're using our phone's built in tethering, and automatically opt us into the $X a month plan?
Also, I've read other plans where you may get 2GB for the phone's data, and then an additional 2GB for tethered devices. How can they keep track of this? Can they tell if I am using my phone's tethering capabilities.
Obviously I'd like to continue to use my wifi tethering free of charge, and not have to pay ATT for their own service, much like Google Navigation vs ATT Navigator.
Curious about this as well. Came up in a conversation today at work. There was debate between tethering on Android and the iPhone. Any one have insight?

AT&T won't know if u tether through ur phone using android API. But u got to be careful as they can make out based on the amount of traffic u use.
Well, I can speak for the android phones but the never detected me doing it with my blackberry for the last 4 years.
Once they release their "version" I'll be able to report on the captivate as I will use it as much as possible.
Unless u have unlimited data plan, ATT should not care about it at all.

This is why at&t says that max bandwidth is used by less than 1% of their network users. And for a company this big, cutting/forcing data plan on this 1% shouldn't be a big deal, even if they threaten to leave, to ensure quality service to rest of the customers.

How about they upgrade their network to handle ALL the traffic and not keep selling/pushing devices that people use to consume data? IMO there is no abuse or "using too much" bandwidth. I bought an UNLIMITED data plan to use I see fit and use a device that has the capabilities to run apps that use bandwidth, I'm gonna use them when I want and as much as I want, and everyone that has such a device and plan should be able to. If more people would stand together and voice that they wouldn't be getting rid of the "1%". Customer service and providing a good wireless experience doesn't mean turning away customers that actually use the features that AT&T SOLD to them.
i feel like if im able to make my phone tether without their help and i have unlimited data i can do that... it's for MY USE AND ENJOYMENT.... i realize att and most customers dont feel the same, and any business model wont permit that, so im not trying to start an argument or anything... just how i feel about it all... i have an unlimited plan, that means i can use UNLIMITED DATA regardless of how i use it...
but to answer OP, stick with native android if casual tethering, just watch your back and usage... maybe look into the att plan if your gonna use it everyday

Right. Once in a while is ok. But there are some habitual consumers. Such accounts would get flagged. Cos they didn't complain when u consumed high a couple doesn't mean people aren't watching.

With all the customers att has I'd think you'd need an insane amount of data usage to get noticed. I have unlimited and I used 4.5 gigs last month with zero tethering. Also they may filter your usage to see if your playing an online game or something, obviously if your communicating with a WoW server or BC2 server for three hours strait you're teathering. But if your just D/Ling stuff a lot they really can't tell because your phone could realistically be doing that where as obviously it can't play BC2 ;-)

I agree. They don't care what u do. But they could be raising alerts to the network team if usage crosses a certain level. Certainly, many customers satisfaction in any given area is considered more than one satisfied customer. Thinking from business angle here. Most of the alerts they may not bother, but if any tower is getting overloaded, then it would create a high priority issue for them, and that is when notice of high usage could be sent to consumers choking the network.

Technically, yes they can tell that you're tethering... but not because the tether itself sends a red flag. It's the type of traffic that your "phone" is generating that can be a dead giveaway. For example, if the user agent on your browser says it's IE8 running on Windows 7 it's pretty suspicious. If you're running p2p, gaming or any other kinds of software or data patterns that aren't really expected from your phone then it could raise a red flag. They aren't sniffing everyone's packets. However, if you are using unusually high data amounts, they could start monitoring your traffic and determine that you are most likely tethering. I guess you could deny it. I'm not sure how far you could argue that or how far they could "prove" their side.
However, they're not in the business of running customers off. They aren't looking to lose or upset a customer. If you aren't abusing the tethering (ie excessive data usage on an unlimited plan) I highly doubt that they would care or desire to upset you. I do suspect that some day they may use this as a tool to get rid of the unlimited data plans. I also suspect that if you aren't on an unlimited plan they probably would never complain, since you are paying per gb. This is all speculation on my part.

The most they would probably even do if they did happen to single out a user for "unreasonable usage" is maybe ask you to stop or take away data unlimited. the fine print in the brochure does not say anything about cash penalties for over use it just says it will not be allowed.

Nexus 6 Wi-Fi Hotspot speed very slow

Hello. I have a bit of a problem, annoyance really, with a Nexus 6 on T-Mobile. I have an unlimited plan and have been using the native hotspot from day 1 (with the tether_dun_required=0 and net.tethering.noprovisioning=true tweaks, just to be sure). Since yesterday, I've been having awful speeds with it. Less than 20 KB, that's obviously unusable. I've reset network and phone, reinstall CM, edited APNs, even put the sim card in a different phone with 5.1.1, same problem. Must be artificially throttled. I just want to know how to prevent it from happening again (which I'm still baffled it even happened in the first place since the data should be coming up as from the phone) and/or fixing it. Data on the Phone is normal. The weirdest thing is that when I connect my other phone to the hotspot it has normal speeds. Right now I'm using PDAnet+, it has the original speeds as when it was normal (sometimes more since it's usb), but I want wi-fi since having my phone constantly on my PC is not good. I walk around the house and don't want to be disconnected just to talk to someone on the phone while I have to cook or just leave the room. Any suggestions? I'll be more than happy to answer your questions. Just let me know.

you do realize that tmobile let's you wirelessly tether? if your plan has limited data, then you have unlimited tether. if you have a completely unlimited high speed plan, then you get 7gb tethering. you do not have to use the build.prop edit, and would be better without it. anyways, network speeds differ with each tower, and with time of the day, depending how busy the towers that you are using are. mid day, if the towers are busy, your speeds could very well slow down, a lot.

Actually, it started at about 9 pm. I checked it again at 2 am, same problem. Besides, I also checked the phone speed at the same time, difference was tremendous. So it's not a congestion problem, it's only the wi-fi hotspot that is affected. Plus, the problem only happens with my PCs. And it's not the computers because I tried the hotspot from my Sprint phone and everything was working to perfection.

if you have the a limited high speed plan, and you went over your high speed limit, then your speeds would be reduced.

I'm at 145 GBs/Unlimited.
0GBs/ 14 GBs Hotspot. (which is the problem, because it was never detected yet it is limited speed right now only for my PCs)

yup. if you are using the edits, then tmobile shouldnt see your tethering. about this ive heard different stories.. every time ive gone over the limit the last 3 years, i got cut off. but i hear many say that only their speed gets slowed down. so im suspecting that is just what is happening to you.

Yup. For some reason only the hotspot is affected. They say I should wait to the next bill cycle. But I've been using it for months and this is the first time this has happened. Even on Sprint, this never happened.

well, only until your next bill cycle will you know if this is it or not.
T-Mobile now does 5 or 8GB tether even if your grandfathered in and after that they hold the right to slow you to 2G speeds. Doesnt matter if they never have, its in your conditional statement of terms aka what used to be a contract but is no longer law abiding unless you owe money on a phone. Essentially there is no pure unlim LTE tether for anyone anymore.

yup
This seems to no longer work as of yesterday. I was able to tether just fine last night. Woke up this morning and speeds are reduced severely. Speeds are 100% on my phone, but tethering is to a crawl. Anyone else experiencing this?
