Fast Charging not working - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I've looked through several threads before making this one, but couldn't find a solution to my problem. I've got a Tmobile 32GB Note 5 that never had any problems with fast charging and as of today, it no longer fast charges. I've got several OEM fast charger adapters/cables along with the fast wireless charger and none of them are fast charging my phone. I've cleared the cache partition, done a factory reset and nothing seems to be working. I've also made sure that the option to fast charge are turned on in the battery section and no dice. It used to display a toggle to fast wireless charge in the battery settings as well, but that option doesn't appear anymore.
One other interesting thing is that whenever I'd connect the cable I'd get the USB message which never appeared before. Even when I did restarts, the USB message would always appear in the notification despite no USB cable being plugged in.
I'm very frustrated about this as I've been trying to work what's causing this problem and I've tried most tips/solutions, but having no luck.
Any help would be appreciated and thank you.

hi,
Firstly, i dont think i could give you a positive
answer to your issue, but maybe some pointers
to consider.....?
Ok, Secondly i found that fast charging does not
always have a positive effect on your battery. eg battery life
Even more frustrating when your battery is sealed
and if you want to ever change the battery , you have to pay Samsung /service provider to do the job.!
Thirdly, i had similar issues(like you) with fast charging my Note 4 and Note5.
My Note5 also suddenly stopped fast charging and
would only "cable charge " (re Notifications bar)
I tried all sorts of settings combination, nothing worked. Like you i became frustrated because I could not sortt issue out.
A few months afterwards i swapped my usb power cord around and used my old Note 4 usb cord... suddenly fast charging, was back?
(Why i dont know, as i did try out different combinations.... then.)
Ever since i started to take note/ (info) of the effects on battery fast charging. eg Forum members experience and remarks, my own personal experiences Web articles//opinions etc.
Came to conclusions fast charging , will /could shorten you phone battery life eventually? Not good.
I think even Samsung realizes it (my opinion)
So now i have my fast charging back, i mostly cable charge.!
Good luck

[Q] Galaxy note not charging

Hi,
First off, I have a non rooted, stock Galaxy note. It's not modded in any way.
The problem started occurring yesterday, all was just fine before. Since then, it won't charge no matter what USB cable or charger I use.
1) Phone on
- I plug the charger to the phone : nothing. The phone doesn't register being connected to the OEM wall-charger.
- I connect the phone using the OEM USB cable to my computer (tryed 3 different computers) : Nothing.
I also tried another charger and several USB cables : no luck.
2) Phone off
- I plug the charger / I connect my phone to a computer using USB cable : the phone boot up and doesn't charge the battery.
Any thought ?
Thx in advance.
Try using some compressed air to clean out the usb port on the Galaxy Note. I had a similar issue with an iPhone once and there ended up being a piece of lint stuck on 1 of the contacts which made it unable to charge. Could be the case with your phone. Other than that contact Samsung and see what they can do for you.
Thx for the advice.
I'll try that out and call over Samsung.
Try factory reset if that could help..
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA App
Update:
I tried a micro USB Host Cable (OTG Cable) and it's working fine : recognized and plugged in USB stick is working fine.
Also, I tried a factory reset after backuping my data. All went fine but sadly the problem is still there : no charging.
More update:
After two days, It started working again as if it never happened.
Still wondering what might have caused it
Might be the dust that settled on the battery pins and the contacts on your phone.. happens some times .. glad its back to work.. poor thing..

Happened to me too! It wouldn't charge until I turned off the phone. It worked after I cleaned the phone and usb cable's metal parts--sorry no correct jargon for this--with rubbing alcohol. Make sure there's no lint left from the cleaning.
Yup, had this. On charge with stock charger in the mains. Battery dropping fast, back (top) getting warm. I turned the screen off, left it for 5 mins. Looked again, it was 2% less!
Reboot fixed it.
There did not seem to be any rogue program using the CPU, but I now have a meter and a better logger to examine this if it occurs again. I assume the system got into a loop somewhere, although the phone was normally responsive.

Happening to my phone as well right now. I was worried that the battery is dying so I got a spare online. But it doesn't make sense that its charging and know that it is on one state and not the other.
I panicked so I replaced Rocket Rom with Cassie's. It's still doing this.
Have you guys checked if there is a weird smell from your battery? I thought that was something to look at but dont all batteries smell like that?
galaxy note is experiencing the same hardware problems as galaxy s2 phones. I am very pissed off at samsung. I bought a new galaxy note in dominican republic and after one month of delicate use the phone developed charging problems. Drive mode would start automatically or the phone would shut off all by itself and a battery removal reset would turn the phone on again. then finally, the phone would stay in charging mode even after the usb charge cable is removed. the phone would discharge quickly and then would not turn on. I finally gave the phone to repair dept at claro phone company. they would not fix it and are just showing me a middle finger. Now I guess, I would have to learn to change the charging port myself. After seeing galaxy s2 videos, I see many ribbon contacts would get corroded and need to be cleaned frequently. Many phones were just less than 2 months old and had so much corrosion on the contacts. this is bad design and I think the high current draw for a dual core phone of that huge screen size is causing all kinds of electrical corrosion on the contacts inside the phone. this sucks majorly as I loved the phone when I had it working fine. Now I think I have bought a problem with my saved cash. I will try to repair my own phone soon as I get it back from the repair dept.
My Galaxy Note is doing a similar thing. Not all the same symptoms, but a few similarities.
The other night, when the charger was plugged in the phone kept changing it's mind whether it was plugged in or not - probably every few seconds I was getting the chime it makes when you plug the phone in. I eventually managed to charge the phone by turning it off, removing the battery, replacing it, plugging the charger in, waiting for it to start charging, then turning it on.
Today my phone was trying to tell me it was charging when it wasn't even plugged in to anything!
As with the above post, my phone has been getting hot occasionally and the drive mode has started by itself a few times.
I've used three chargers and four cables.
I'll be taking it along to where I bought it from later on today.
Battery not charging
G Note Battery is not charging .. same problem as of 1st post.
Changed usb cables, chargers, thru PC, laptop, direct wall, cleaning etc
Every thing fails. one month old set ?
OMG, glad to know I'm not the only one. Bought a Galaxy Note from a brazilian network provider (VIVO) and after 1 week of usage I'm experiencing the same problems as you guys.
My phone will only charge when it is powered off and USB connection does not work anymore (even in download mode). Before the problem onset, I noticed some MTP connection and SD Card rescanning without connecting to the PC.
Did a factory reset and got no results. Downloaded Odin Mobile and flashed stock rom and the problem persists.
Has anyone found a fix or the cause for this?
Thanks!
Missing my old Galaxy S...
Strange! After a full night charge, now I can unplug and plug the battery and continue charging from where I stop without turning it off.
I can now get beeps when connecting to PC. It show MTP-Inicialization in the Note screen but I have no access to to Note partitions in Windoes Explorer.
Update: One more strange thing just happened now.
Went to college and left it charging. When I came back at night, tried to connect the Note to the PC and everything is working ok now.
What?!?! Now I'm confused. How can I send it to warranty now? I think I'll have to wait a couple more days.
issue as well
That is my 3rd galaxy note, first one screen cracked, second dont ask me why it was not modified at all but it was so sluggish and froxze all the time, my 3rd one it is rooted device and i have similar issue...I am thinking is it because i was charging it from my wife's htc one phone? I thought they would have the same pins...anyway it is doomed, i tried so many chargers and problem not solved
ok i can comfirm to everyone that i have fixed the problem by buying contact cleaner spray and sprayed inside the usb and beautiful all back to normal!
Nooo..
Have a charging problem as well :/ It detects the charging cable and shows the battery icon with the circle about to charge. But it just turns off before it starts charging, turns on shows the icon again, turns off, turns on, shows the battery icon and so on. I have tried with two different chargers. For me i looks like the voltage is too low? Maybe the battery needs a jumpstart? I'll just leave it in the charger and see what happens. Suggestions welcome
Edit: It's just two weeks old, damn it. Last night I used it untill the battery was empty. That is why I think the voltage is so low it doesnt accept charge.
Edit2: Fixed! Puh! I was right. Battery needed a higher mah to start the charging. Leaving the post as it is for future reference.
same problem here, however it charges from my laptop... how strange?

[Q] No longer charging unless I remove battery first

I'll try to be as brief and to the point as possible:
A couple of days ago, plugging my standard charger into the phone would no longer charge it. Tried switching cables, adapters, outlets, nothing worked.
I read about the toothbrush solution online, and cleaned out the USB port, but that also did nothing. However, if I remove the battery and put it back in, it DOES charge after that. Until I unplug it again, then it won't charge unless I remove the battery again. It's the only way it'll do it.
There are also two new things corresponding with this charging problem. First is, whenever the phone is charging and I unplug the cable, a little notification appears that says "USB connector connected". This doesn't happen when I plug it in, only when I unplug it. Second thing is, BetterBatteryStats tells me I have a kernel wakelock called msm_dwc3 and it is eating my battery alive. I never had this particular wakelock until the charging problem started.
Any ideas? I've had trouble finding out what exactly msm_dwc3 is and if/how it's related to my problem. I've ordered a new charging cable (don't think that's the issue) and a new OEM battery as a last ditch effort to fix this. I've done a factory reset on my phone to see if that resolved it, but still no dice. Problem remains.
Thanks!
This just started happening to me also. Hopefully someone can help us out.
Update
I just received a new oem charger with a new oem charging cord and the problem went away. Hopefully when you get your new charger your problem will be solved also.

Unfortunately I haven't had the same luck. Still having the issue. So now whenever I need to charge the phone, the easiest way I've found is to turn it off, plug it in, wait for the charging graphic to appear, then turn it back on. That works, as long as I don't unplug it. Once it gets unplugged, it says "USB CONNECTOR CONNECTED" and won't charge anymore unless I re-do everything. This is after trying new OEM charger, cable, battery, the whole works. It's a mystery to me and there doesn't seem to be a fix.
Same problem with me, i bought an used note 3 and came with the battery draining, tryied many rooms so far, differents kernels, bought an oem battery and the problem persist, today i just realized this wakelock msm_dwc3 was draining the battery and all the information i got on google says the charger could be the problem. My note 3 didnt came with original charger and cable, i m using my tab 3 original charger 5v 2a and the cable, i dont know what to do.

Won't charge but USB connects to computer

Replaced battery, which had some charge in it, I connected it to the computer and the charger and got the lightning bolt, however the battery showed not charging, the USB connection to the computer was fine and was able to transfer files, unfortunately couldn't flash a new rom as the battery power was too low, also tried probably too late to go into the stock recovery and it just turns the phone off, before the battery was completely drained the battery charging icon looked normal with it filling up, now it comes on, but no filling up
I also put it on the wireless charger overnight and it did nothing
stock 6.0.1 no water damage, motherboard looks fine
is the phone a lost cause? anyone have any ideas?
thanks for your help peeps
Steve
Did you try a different cable?
yes, I tried 5 different cables that all work with my other phones, I did search for solutions before posting, I just didn't find anyone with a charging issue that was able to connect to the computer
thanks for the suggestion though, I appreciate it
If it's the battery, then replacement batteries are super cheap and it looks like a simple operation.

Fast charging is gone

Anyone know what I have to do to get fast charging back? I have the option enabled in settings. The cord is good, my wife's phone fast charges just fine with it. I've soft reset the phone, cleared cache, and just about any other option I could find on the web. So weird cuz it was working fine not too long ago but just noticed now that I can't get it to work.
Try cleaning the usb port on your phone. i had the same problem, just cleaned it out with air.
Thanks but been tried that. I work in Audio/video so that was one of the first things I tried.

Are you able to mount the phone as storage on a computer, or able to access a USB with the OTG adapter? The charge port on this phone isn't the most robust and a few people have had problems with then failing.
No issues with any other stuff except fast charging. The phone charges fine but just say fast charging and takes forever. It's so weird cuz in my car my phone would barely charge when hooked up to USB in console, but then soon as I lost fast charging at home it started fast charging in the car. I just don't get it

Well luckily normal charging and USB still works so it's not the worst. At least your battery will last a little longer now?
My advice would be install an app like accubattery
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.digibites.accubattery
It will show current when charging.
Fast charging being displayed by Android only seems to indicate fast charging is enabled rather than actually occurring.
I find when fast charging is occurring with standard Samsung charger, but not original cable it will show approximately 2800 mA.
It did seem to be below this rate a few months ago when ambient temperatures were higher and battery temp got above 36 °C
I also bought an unbranded charger cable that has an led that illuminates bright when high current charging and dimmer when charging at lower rates.
Probably defective . I've read issues on here about fast charging no longer working and it had to be repaired by samsung.

I finally replaced the usb-c port
I had the issue that fast charging was gone and it charged very slow sometimes. I did many searches and did everything I could do. none changed anything. finally I went to Samsung and they replaced the port.

It was. Now I am a bit skeptical about this USB-C port thing. I take good care of my gears. Especially this one that cost me an arm and a leg. I want to do a survey if all the manufacturers' type-c port is prone to get damaged like this easy!
I would take your device to a Samsung Service Centre and let them take a look at it.

Question about fast charging on the Note 9

Hi...
For a while now I've had a problem with my Note 9 only displaying that it is regular charging when plugged into my fast charger plug and cable. I tried a numbr of troubleshooting steps from restarting, cleaning the port, trying safe mode, buying replacement fast charger and cable, factory settings, rooting but it still only showed as cable charging so I became convinced it was a physical problem with the port. Wireless fast charging continues to work as it should.
I recently installed AccuBattery and when plugged into my fast charger/cable, the charge current completely fills the the green bar to between 1800-2000 mA so now I'm beginning to wonder whether fast charging is working ok, but the phone is reporting it incorrectly.
Does anyone else know what kind of charge current the Note 9 should have when cable fast charging please? Also, just out of curiosity, what should it be when wirelessly fast charging too please?
Thanks for any help...

I started charging at 25%. With screen on I got 2700mah.
I left my phone off for 15 mins and stayed at that 2700mah average.
When I turned my phone screen on, I had 45% but screen on charge dropped to 1000mah.
If you look at the bottom of my screenshot, it explains why you need to turn your screen off to get accurate fast charge Numbers. Your phone might throttle the screen on charge if a certain criteria is met.
Once again. Did you enable it in the settings?

Hmmm the numbers you get do seem to suggest there is an issue with my phone. The screen off speeds are around the same as screen on.
Samsung quoted about £10,000,000 to repair as it's rooted and they have to replace the entire board to satisfy their warranty terms.
May have a go at replacing the charging port myself.
Thanks again :good:

I don't use fast charging, ever. So that's probably why my port still works. I have gotten so much dirt in it and cleaned it out it isn't even funny. So I'm less 6 to believe that fast charging is what ruins the port not debris.
A lot of people who use fast charging have the same issue as you-,it burns out the port.
Honestly, my advice is to love with fast charging over wireless and not spend a billion dollars replacing the port. Wait until it's time to replace the battery in a year or two and do it then. Fast charging over cable only saves you 30-40 minutes. I can charge and do charge my phone normally and it only takes around an hour and 40 minutes.
