Good day,
As of about two days ago my Captivate (rooted, side loading enabled) would get stuck "obtaining address" when trying to hook up to wifi. It does this with my home access point as well as municipal wifi. It says "obtaining address" for about 3-5 minutes then says "could not connect" or similar.
I tried uninstalling all recent apps - no dice. I just reset my Captivate first through the settings menu and then through the volume buttons/power button method. It still is not working. Any ideas? Should I return it for another one? Since I did a total factory reset twice, I don't see how it can be a software problem... then again, I am new to Android.
Thanks, gents and ladies.
If you are within 30 days, I'd return.

Is there anything I should do besides having already reset the phone - so as not to void the warranty? The rooting and sideloading mods should be undone now, right?
Thanks for the help.
See if you can manually set an IP address. Sounds like DHCP is having issues for some reason.
Also, I am not certain but I think I remember reading that even a factory reset might leave remnant files around. Do a search (I am too lazy) and if I am right, look into wiping the phone and then reseting it.

Rooting your phone voids your warranty. Have you done a Odin one click restore back to JFS 6 stock. That should fix your issue, and if it doesn't you know you probably need to return the phone.

Thanks Ian - I did a factory data reset and then reset it - let me see if I can find another way to wipe the phone. About to try manual DHCP as well.
Thanks for all the help!

Will the Odin one click restore unroot my phone (therefore un-voiding the warranty?) Thanks. I use a Mac but I can run Odin under VMWare.

I re-wiped the phone and it works now. I suppose this means it's not a hardware problem!

Is there anyway to do this without wiping the phone?
I have using this ROM for over a week, when suddenly this issue popped up today. I don't want to go through the painful process of restoring all my settings.
My friend recently gave me her old HTC One, and I've been trying to fix it, but I can't quite figure it out.
She said it started bootlooping randomly after she plugged it in to charge. When I first received it I plugged it in and mashed the power button until it turned on. Booted up just fine. But now it's in a stupid bootloop that takes me to a blank desktop with no dock or wallpaper, and then reboots after a few minutes.
Can a battery issue cause this? A complete factory reset from recovery is not an option because I'm trying to save her photos. I don't know how I can get 11gb worth of them off when it's not booting properly.. Any ideas for fixing this or getting the photos off?
Have you tried to wipe data factory reset from recovery ?
That doesn't erase photos
Oh really? I thought it did. This is a stock recovery btw. No root or anything. And it's on 4.1.

in stock recovery try and erase cache .. Don't factory reset ... everything would be gone
Ughh,... A bit too late. Lost everything and it didn't even fix my problem. Ah well. I think I need to replace the battery anyway. That, and my computer doesn't even detect the phone when I plug it in.

It's fine. I jumped the gun. Losing some photos had never killed anybody haha..
I should have remembered.. But I haven't done anything with Android for so long because I had been stuck with a locked S4 for a while..
Anyway, I'll replace the battery and see if that helps.

It will not unfreeze them. You will need to factory reset.

Okay, thanks. Factory reset is what got me in this in the first place. (Well, not the first place, but it's what I can't get out of!) is not changing anything. I still can't get any further in setup than one screen past wifi (it just continues to check whatever it is it's checking. It's not frozen and it doesn't loop, it just doesn't move on. Pressing next/skip produces a sound/feedback but doesn't move on) Oh well, it was worth a try.

If you're rooted, factory reset will not work. You will need the KDZ file to wipe your phone, which is currently in the works.
If you actually got it to boot, then you're fine. That "activating" screen sometimes takes several minutes. Just be patient.

Thank you for helping. I don't actually make it to an activating screen. I just get one step past wifi (if I keep wifi on it gets caught in updating system. If I turn wifi off it gets caught in just a sec). It will "load" (lack of better term) for 1-3 hours. I did discover that I can receive phone calls while stuck in the screen. And I can hear when I get a text message, although I can't check it. But that makes sense if I can't factory reset a rooted phone....

Try removing battery and trying to boot again. If your phone was rooted, that''s possibly your problem.

So what you're saying is that you're still stuck on that screen, but all of the phones functions work? Hm, that is very strange.

Yep! Sprint connections optimizer popped up. I was able to hit a link from there and access chrome. I wasn't signed in to wifi though. Also, whenever something closes, the screen goes back to setup. I don't have access to the task bar or the soft keys (besides back). Someone else on the forum had a similar problem and looks like it was solved with kdz. So there is hope.

I suppose you'll just have to wait for the KDZ. I have never heard of anything like that before. I'm sorry that happened.

I think I may be seeing something related to what you're seeing (though I'm not starting over from a Factory Reset). Ever since taking the root flash, my wifi isn't connecting to my home router anymore.
I was just about ready to do a Factory Reset to see if that fixed it, but now it doesn't look like that'll help.

During the initial setup after factory reset, when you get to the wifi setup screen can you just skip over the wifi setup? Is it possible your wifi isn't working (mine isn't either) and as long as you keep attempting to connect you'll never get past that step in the initial setup process?
i need zv4 rooted system file, i'll root the phone using the zv4 file and will do OTA , thn will get the update.zip for ZV5.
if any one have zv4 rooted system file pl share.

I've tried that. It just hangs on that screen as well. It's a google services error. Can't be fixed without more resources. (That I know of). It connects to data and still won't move on. Though my data is really slow here so who knows if there was any progress....
As for your phone, I wouldn't try factory reset until we get that tot file.... Otherwise, you might be joining the rest of us with Sprint bricks :highfive:

maybe try just flashing the system img, then wipe cache's again before booting. if that doesnt work, its may be time for the dreaded fdr.
I've never been into flashing system img & fdr? It's just sad because I had the same issue before also losing signal with my device. Til I got a replacement and the replacement device is starting to act up also.

my only other suggestion would be to re-flash. you could try just the system partition, but if it were me i would just go all in for full clean flash.
im sure Simms will get on me for saying so, but you can just grab wugs toolkit and be done in 20min or so.

Is it rooted with mods or completely stock? If stock, try deleting the saved wireless networks..

these random issues usually come from a corrupt file, either by an update or some other means. its hard to impossible to pinpoint the cause usually.
if you never flashed before, its best to read up on it a bit first. wugs walks you through the steps, from downloading the files, and drivers, to the flashing. its not foolproof, but if you follow the lead of the script, its not hard to figure out.

well i have before but that was so long ago and that was for my MyTouch and HTC Sensation but that was years ago. Now I know things are easier but I've never really been into flashing and the only reason I did back then was for updates and different version of Sense UI but since I've been using Nexus Devices I didn't have a need or desire to actually flash. Pretty much I'm a NOOB!
but I don't see why wouldn't a factory reset fix it. even if it was temp.

clearing the cache is always a good idea, i think i suggested that earlier.
i dont know how to explain well what cache is exactly, its not part of the file system, its more like temp data storage i believe.

i decided to call T-Moblie and talk to them they told me to take it to a store and get it dianogsed and they will call to get it replaced since it is the 64GB and stores don't have it.... I just want the Wi-Fi to work even though i don't use it all the time but still.
So all of a sudden the s21 is asking for password after restart. I use the same password or 4 variations of it for these accounts. However I cannot login. I can goto web or new device and log in to my Google and Samsung accounts. But the device does t want to allow this.
I’ve seen options to flash firmware back one, I’ve done this in past. And can walk through most options. I tried ADB. But it is not enabled. And that’s become a major issue. If I could do any kind of backup, retrieval of the photos and contacts. That’s all I care about. The rest is not a big deal.
Anyone have any kind of insight? Direction? Thoughts? I can see the device in find my, but there aren’t any options to unlock. Just send message and erase.
I am willing to try almost anything, and if there’s a paid service I will try that. I’ve never seen this screen before, and have never had this issue. It does not make sense.
I purchased a new device and setup with passwords no problem. But there isn’t a backup on Google of the phone there. I tried wiping tge cache and that didn’t help either. I attached a photo of what the screen looks like.
Fwiw. I have photos of wedding and brother that just passed. i don’t want to lose those. I am desperate for any answer. Someone with tech support said I could send device to LV and they can do it. Takes two weeks and phone might not be useable afterwards.

It is 0rigins that make it first
And we didn't solved this problem
This happened to a friend of mine and i was able to "solved" it because he had a custom recovery TWRP.
I copied his files to a PC, while the phone was in recovery mode, then do a factory reset.
Later i found out that was an easier way to unlock the phone:
Remove /Bypass Lockscreen With Recovery
Recently when i restored my data using TWRP i faced a problem at lock screen. I was not able to unlock my phone with the pin i set Earlier..So after so many attempts i was able to find a solution for that problem.(works with pattern, pin etc)...
forum.xda-developers.com
But all this requires a TWRP recovery. If you don´t have that, i guess that the password you need is the one that you have set on the device, while configuring fingerprints.
If you have "find my phone" enable, you should be able to reset that password using a browser on a PC...
Have you found out any other solution?
