Hi, My friend recently enlisted my assistance with his phone. He has no 3g signal, the phone can't make calls, and apparently Sprint was having trouble activating it even though it has a clean ESN. It appears to be rooted, and has a custom ROM. I tried installing an EXE to flash me back to stock, but I dont have the correct driver I suppose. I intend to continue reading as I have been for the last 2 hours. Does anyone have any guidance? The old phone number from the previous owner is loaded. Is that halting activation?
Thank you!
I also try to connect it to Wifi. It connects, but wont let me access a web page. It halts about halfway through loading. Radio issue?
Go to this link and download the files and name it HERCIMG.zip and then put that on the root of the sdcard. Once its on the sdcard, shut down the phone. Now turn on the phone while holding the down volume button. Once it verifies the files, press the trackball to confirm the install. Once it is done the phone will reboot and be restored back to stock. Once its stock, have your friend call Sprint and retry activation. Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=804692

Does it Already have a Custom Recovery? If so try Downloading a Different Rom, and be sure to Wipe Data/Cache/DalvikCache!
Also try the Fresh Rom, and Update the User Profile!

It does have Clockwork mod, I'm assuming the previous owner installed a ROM, ran into this problem and bought a new phone instead of tinkering. I was directed here from SDX where I have learned some of the ins and outs with my Samsung.
I flashed a team heroC 2.3.4 which is a cyanogen I believe. It booted up fine, and is running but didnt fix my issue. It didnt wipe /System so the issue might be hidden in there? I doubt the end user will want to modify, etc. Also, I've noticed when people enlist me for these projects I also receive the complaints and am expected to do something about it.
I'll give this a shot, and then re-root, and keep trying. In the end, if I dont get it fixed I have a free hero to play with.
Thank you, and +1 to ya.

I cleared cache, dalvik cache, choose zip from sdcard, yes install from zip. Am I missing a step? Any chance you could link me to a ROM you recommend? I tried Fresh 2.4.0.zip
I have clockwork v3.0.0.5

My phone has -s ON, that seems to be halting this process. I am trying to find the proper driver for this phone now. I have Windows 7, I have it plugged in, I run RUU and it says there is a USB connection error. I don't see it in Device Manager, nor do I see it try to trigger on my PC as a device.
If I rename the HERCIMG to update, and install as sd card/update.zip Will that cause an issue?
I will await a response in fear of bricking.
In Hboot it says can't find Hercdiag.zip
Other Hercdiags
and HercImg.zip
It appears that I have Hboot 1.47.0000
Would renaming to Hercimg.zip do the trick?
In this particular Zip I have:
androidinfo.txt
boot.img
Hboot 1.47
NV MFG
Radio 2.42
recovery.img
Splash
system.img
user data.img

+1, Thank you.
I am s- off now if that makes any kind of difference. I guess I will keep flashing different things until I can get something to work.
I was able to log into a google account over wifi, but still no 3g icon. I flashed the Gapps because all of those were missing somehow. I really wish I could get that HERCIMG to work. It also says Im missing Hercdiag, etc too. So maybe thats the issue?
I have radio 2.42.01.04.27
Is there any further detail I can post that may help us narrow down the cause?
I wish I had the correct data cable so I could use the RUU method. I'm assuming thats why the phone isnt triggering my device manager. (If it wouldnt have the same issue with HERCIMG.zip anyway)
Its gotta be something retarded that I'm overlooking here.
When calling Sprint for activation, the code entered into the dialer wasnt triggering the response necessary for activation either.
Would flashing stock recovery fix the Hboot issue. Maybe the Hboot file is corrupt? I have re-downloaded 3 times, but from the same mediafire host.

Actually now that you are S-OFF put the HERCIMG.zip onto your sdcard and boot into your bootloader. Don't worry about the others missing. Those are irrelevant. Boot into the bootloader when your phone is off by holding volume down and pushing power button. Then when asked for a confirmation press the trackball.
I made some progress. I formatted my SD card to FAT32, It was FAT before. Copied the file over, was able to flash that HERCIMG file.
Once I got logged in, it appears that this phone has been flashed to REVOL. So I guess I have more homework trying to switch it back to Sprint? It has the Sprint Programs installed, and Sprint boot screen.
It has a revol lockscreen, and the carrier in "About Phone" is listed as Revol.
What now? booo... Am I SOL?

The only way to flash back to Sprint is illegal and I don't even know how to do it and if I did I wouldn't do it cause it's illegal.

By any chance your extreme lag also affects the audio performances? I and a friend of mine had in the same period (for 2 weeks) EXTREME lag, signal lost on mobile network. The lag was so powerful that even music was interrupted. The only way to get rid of this was rebooting the tablet.
The most awkward part is that the bug persisted over ANY KIND OF ROM/KERNEL. Even the official one from Google Developers (any android version).
Best part: It was fixed by itself. Lags started to be increasingly rare and at some point they stopped.
I tried to catch some logs...at the moment of failure, just once they pointed me to some lines in the source code...so I quit trying to figure it out what happens..
I had the same problem, I solved it installing SlimKat, but probably you can solve it with any custom rom, I tried many times to restore 4.4.2 but always the same, only installing custom roms seem to solve it...
I remember it, is like a nightmare to me, turn the tablet On and let it 5 minutes before open any app, open Google Play and see how it lags, installing apps always causing freezing... It remembers me my Windows XP years...
At the beginning i let it thinking it will solve itself, haha, after months I was about to broke it with a stone

If you want to keep the official rom you can just try to reflash 4.4.2 wiping everything, just copy to PC the files you want to keep and after flashing copy again to tablet, i would recommend you to copy only important data, not everything, and specially not copy the folders with strange names that you dont know what they are

Before flashing anything try to restore the tablet, copy all your stuff to PC and format it by going to settings / backup and reset / factory data reset and checking to wipe all on internal memory/sdcard
It will wipe all your data, apps and everything, so be sure that you dont forget anything to be copied to pc.
Maybe it solve the problem without flashing
About root and flashing:
You dont need it, but you can root it if you want after flashing,
I dont know how much you know about flashing and all that, so Im gonna make you an quickly tutorial
Basically all you need is:
Nexus root toolkit from here: www.wugfresh.com/nrt/
4.4.2 firmware (can be downloaded directly from the Nexus Root Toolkit)
And be sure that you have copied to PC everything you dont want to be deleted, you can just copy all to PC and after flashing copy to tablet only what you want...
On tablet turn on USB debugging, on developer options (To unlock it go to settings /about tablet /build number and click it many times until it says "you are now a developer", then go back and you will see it)
When its done follow the Nexus Root Toolkit instructions to "flash stock + unroot" (by clicking a button with that text) you should select Android 4.4.2 (KOT49H) and check the option "automatically download"(dont remember what the option says exactly)
And the tool will download it and tell you when you have to do something. Just dont disconnect the tablet until the tool ends its job
Maybe you should install some drivers if you get an error message like "device not found"
If you want to know more about insalling drivers, you get any problem or something else just tell me, but maybe im gonna make you wait because tomorrow is my birthday and I wont be checking it for few hours.

Be careful about "Returning to stock" method as I think Google broke their "flash-all.bat" from the arcvive of Android 4.4. Flash every file by your hand. I used that idiotic flash-all on any android version, but on 4.4 it completely broke my motherboard by flashing wrong boot.img.

Okay, I was no sure that you also format "SD card" factory reset do not delete user data/sd card on some devices and Im not sure if in N7 you have to check the option
Try the 2° option but take a look at this comment:

If thats true then try to flash 4.3 and install 4.4.2 by OTA, just select 4.3 instead 4.4.2 when you are about to flashing
Ok,
I flashed the nexus 7 2012 directly to the factory 4.4.2 using the nexus root toolkit, and everything is working fine without problems, at least for now.
The tablet isn't giving exchange errors, and doesn't hang everytime, but I only used it for some minutes, lets see how it works after some days/intensive usage.
Anyway, as I said, I flashed to 4.4.2 directly using the toolkit, and it worked without any problem
Thank You!
Yes I know the title is a bit long, but there's no other way to say it.
After updating my rom to android revolution hd 84,I've encountered a small problem: I can't copy single files larger than 3-4MB to some of my root folders.
I discovered this when I tried to change my kernel and my phone restated. I thought it was incompatible but then it happened again when I tried to change my bootanimation.
Basically whenever I try to copy a single file larger than 3-4MB to some of my root folders, my phone auto-deletes it and restarts.
And yes, I've unlocked my bootloader, rooted my phone and I have busybox.
EDIT: Also forgot to mention, I'm using X-Plore as a file manager, and all root folders have a little purple circle on their corner. I can do whatever I want normally in those folders. However, most folders have a red circle and coincidentally, those are the folders which restart my phone and delete all files over 3-4MB that are put into them.
Does anyone have any ideas how to fix this?
Bump, has anyone got any ideas?

sounds like the kernal to me, you seem to have write protection, have you tried changing the permissions on the folder your trying to write files too or even try another kernal.
I tried a lot of different permissions, nothing works. And since it's got write protection, I CAN'T change the kernel.
EDIT: also, not sure if it matters, but when I updated my rom to a newer version, I didn't wipe the userdata partition, since it's the same rom, just a newer version.
I was thinking of maybe making another nandroid backup, reinstalling the rom AND wiping the userdata partition to try if it fixed anything, and if nothing is fixed, I'll just restore the backup to before I reinstalled the rom.

This shouldnt stop you from flashing another kernal in recovery, this only effects what you do when booted into the rom.
It's the same thing. Did you read my 1st post? I discovered this when trying to change my kernel, which I can only do through recovery. I use TWRP. I tried flashing a custom kernel and the phone just rebooted without any changes. Then later I tried flashing another bootanimation and the phone again rebooted with the default bootanimation. And it still does it when trying to manually change the bootanimation by replacing it with a file manager.
In conclusion, I get the same problem even in recovery.

Of course I read your first post, just didnt quite understand the restart part, thought you meant it restarted itself out of your rom, I would try what you said, rather than a dirty flash, try with a clean slate after backing up, there maybe parts of your old modifications to the system in the data partition.
Also, I'm not sure it can technically be called "write protection", since I can copy\delete\move, etc files just fine, but I can't copy files above 3MB. And due to that I can't change my bootanimation and kernel. As for the bootanmation, I also tried changing it manually and still the same thing happens - my phone reboots and deletes the file I copied. Needless to say, the same thing happens even when trying to flash it with TWRP.
Ok, reinstalling rom, will report back with results.
Edit 1 - install complete, rebooting....
Edit 2 - doing the setup thing at the 1st startup
Conclusion - Strangely enough, doing a clean flash of my rom fixed everything. Weird. Well, guess now I have a lot of things to set up again.
Well, thx for everything, even if I managed to fix everything by myself in the end. Though, I'd still much appreciate it if anyone could tell me what the problem was so I can be ready for any similar problems I might have in the future.

So my computer bit the dust about two months ago so i found myself in a situation where yes, I had a PC back when i unlocked the bootloader, ran ADB fastboot commands and flashed the twrp recovery.img . But now, I have no access to computers whatsoever. So heres what I did:
Downloaded - Str8upx's TWRP backup found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67914526&postcount=43
Nightbreed813s flashable MM rom for Sprint Phones found here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/des...m-flashable-stock-htc-626s-debloated-t3293602
After downloading the files, I extracted the TWRP backup from the .zip file, navigate with a file explorer past the folder with a Serial Number on it, copied the backup folder that comes next, moved it to my external sd cards TWRP backup folder .
Then I booted into TWRP, after backing up my current ROM, wiped everything and then flashed the sprint ROM
after that, I restored ONLY the System portion of Str8upx's backup. (this means i didn't flash the system image either, ONLY SYSTEM)
Rebooted phone and I was done. Still had SuperSU, but had to install busybox.
I'd like to note that from this point on everything works without any problems and I'm on the official Metro MM. The red letters show up every time I boot the phone now, instead of only when i boot into TWRP like it used to so please be aware of that. Also, my baseband and kernel appear to be different than the ones in Metro MM. I do intend on updating once somebody makes a TWRP flashable version of MM. But until then, i'll stay on this as my daily driver as again, everything does work. I figured I'd share what I learned and maybe we will see less threads about " i tried to install MM on my rooted 626s and it failed " feel free to ask any questions if there are any. All thanks goes to Nightbreed813 and Str8upx for uploading the files. If you have a second and you use these files, Click thanks on the linked posts to thank them.
I need to make all aware that wifi isn't going to work with this method. So if you plan on using wifi, you're gonna have to flash the ruu. Full disclosure I no longer stand behind this due to lack of wifi. I went ahead and flashed with the RUU and fastboot flashed twrp back. This solution was only a temporary fix for me. As it should be for anybody if its used at all

Did you try? If so, any issues?

I downloaded the Metro pcs RUU onto a PC to install the update, then fast boot flashed twrp. (At this moment it didn't show the red warning letters In the bottom of the boot screen) I suspect it happened when I flashed the SuperSU.zip

I really don't know what causes the red letters. Personally speaking, I can still manage with or without them.

No I have a working PC... I just really admired your use of magiver like resources
Gotcha. . Yeah, it's not the first time. And not just phones. I Jimmy rig my way thru a lot of life haha. To be honest I'd probably still do this even if I had my PC. I'm just not a fan of fastboot and adb commands. And I don't want to lock my bootloader again
Yes.. those mother f'in boot loaders would burn in hell if I had any say ... in uh.. boot loaders souls or whatever... ... *crickets*.... hey check that out

But what i'm wanting to know is, did you flash the standard or the De -Bloated rom? I'm not clear on that. Also are there any differences in the UI or OS that you noticed in this mm update?

As far as which sprint ROM you flash debloated version or regular it doesn't really matter, since once you restore the twrp backup you're going to be on the standard non debloated metro official MM. As far as UI differences, there's a few things here and there. Nothing mind blowing. What was advantageous for me is the expanded internal storage. I love it.
I tried installing with the RUU and always got error 155 all the time some I am trying this method out. I would like to know will this method still work on a phone with exposed binary, and for those with MetroPCS, does the service still work as well.
Hello I tried doing everything as followed installed the sprint now after every call or just randomly i get "SIM card has been inserted" "Select a carrier" which T-mobile is the only one to work. Then after a call and again randomly i get this message again and have to repeat the process. Does anyone know why and how can I fix this?

In my instructions you don't stay on the sprint rom. You're supposed to restore the backup after installing that rom. But I need to make all aware that wifi isn't going to work with this method. So if you plan on using wifi, you're gonna have to re lock your bootloader and flash the ruu
I have been experiencing certain issues w my phone and decided to do a factory reset.
Originally i was getting the TWRP loop when my celluar phone provider was trying to push an update.
Well after doing the factory reset, it went into TWRP. I"m not sure why, but that's where I am. I currently do not have an OS installed.I tried downloading a purenexus_shamu-7.1.1-20170215-OFFICIAL rom through some thread that I read, hoping to get a rom installed (excuse my terminology)
The system updated the partition, flashed itself, but still boots into TWRP.
I was at times able to get into the Pure rom? But then it had no apps. not even google play for me to use to download more apps.
Can someone pls provide a step by step of what to do to get me back up and running and disable this TWRP program permanently?
Thank you.

Well, the question is:
Honestly... Did you ever read the PureNexus thread?
Check this post for a detailed install (Google apps links in first post):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=61653759&postcount=4
If you want to start fresh, just flash a factory image of your choice (I advise the latest)
Follow this guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/guide-flash-factory-images-nexus-6shamu-t2954008
Backup your datas first...
Don't flash userdata partition if your phone is not a 32GB model...
Also, don't mess with your phone unless you read enough and know what you are doing otherwise you could break it for good...
i was able to install it and get the gapps running
the problem is it didnt fix anything
i still cant really work the dialup unless it is via bluetooth. (am forced to reboot to be able to use the phone during a call)
my front facing camera still does not work.

Hi... I'm currently using PureNexus myself and never encountered such problems... I guess you'll have to report your issues in the PureNexus thread with proper logs...

Follow the guide posted above to get it back to stock. There shouldn't be a calling issue on that rom. Must be something janky during the flash process. Just get back your phone e to stock and see if everything works.
