Custom Roms and Sim Unlock - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello Everyone,
I have scoured the internet but I can't find a direct answer. I am running a 5.1.1 AOSP rom and am traveling to Europe soon. I want to use my phone there and T-Mobile tells me with my plan that I should be able to use it because I am on their simple plan. I was given a instruction manual on how to set it up but the app it says to set it up with tells me that my device is not compatible.
My questions are:
-Am I able to use my phone while I am in Europe?
-Do I still need to sim unlock it?
-Do I need to flash back to a TW ROM to sim unlock it?
-Has anyone had experience with using a custom rom in another country?
Thanks in advance.

Im not sure this is gonna be much help bud but I used it on my note 3. Definitely worth checking out.

My questions are:
-Am I able to use my phone while I am in Europe?
I'm not sure if you're going to be able to text or call from Europe from an AOSP based ROM, I personally haven't tried it but I know there's a setting that allows for roaming. You could use wifi though, obviously. Not Wifi Calling or Wifi texting though (to my knowledge)
-Do I still need to sim unlock it?
I don't think so on an AOSP ROM, however if you try running an Int carrier on your N910T it won't work because of incompatibility.
-Do I need to flash back to a TW ROM to sim unlock it?
I'm not sure if there's a sim unlocker for the device that run int carriers.
-Has anyone had experience with using a custom rom in another country?
Not me

I don't see how rom can affect your service. When I went to Asia I was on a custom tw rom (yes I know it's not aosp) and was able to text, call, and had internet (128kbps or less). Don't remember trying WiFi calling though. But I didn't have to sim unlock.
With your rom are you able to use all your carrier feature? Except WiFi calling of course. If you are then I think you will be fine. If you want to be safe just back up your rom now and go back to a tw rom and set up your phone again. Make a back up of it then go back to aosp. When you get to Europe just switch roms if you have issue with aosp.

SimLock Solution For All 4.3 users

Hello to you all
I would like to show all of you 4.3 users the solution "elvisypi" gave me in my private mail and finally i succeed to unlock my device.
So all of us know that sprint or google changed the way HtcOMADM works and we can't use the original system for unlocking our device.
So here is the solution that "elvisypi" gave me :
1. Download the "Stock with goodies 4.3 ROM". Don't flash it wet. (link : http://www.mediafire.com/?9y21d2wlszh6d6c )
2, With an archive viewer like winzip open the ROM.zip and go to /system/app
3. replace 2 apps which I have attached: HtcOMADM_SettingsPlugin_SPCS.apk and HtcOMADM_SPCS.apk. Just drag and drop and replace.
4. Finally flash the ROM.
5. Install the HTCOneSIMUnlockHelper and follow the onscreen instructions.
This system works 100% and this way you can be on 4.3 rom and still have an unlock GSM sprint device.
again , many thanks to "elvisypi" for his great support
sim unlock
Hope it does
downloading....
Would this work with other ROMs like insercoin?

You must use a stock rom for this to work
Hey, are you using this with Tmobile or another service?

I'm not using t-mobile , I'm not from the US but it should work with any GSM sim after the unlock is done

I've followed your directions, using the ROM you provided (only difference being flashing the root-fix) and I get vDM errors every time I boot and the app says it's unlocked but my Tmobile SIM gets no signal. Is there any other way i can check if my phone's unlocked?

Did you changed the phone in settings to GSM/UMTS?

Yes I have, it says preparing SIM card but I never get any bars. I read in another thread that I need to be on an older radio in order for Tmobile to work. And for that I'll need s-off which I can't. Sigh.

Flash the release radio and let us know, I'm interested in using an At&t card for when I need a good data connection.

It didnt work for me?
I did exactly what you said an When the phone starts up it says unfortunately ui has stop working an it keeps popping up an i cant do anything with my phone
Thank you for this already pressed the Thank you button also
i was getting annoyed that i couldnt find the files before i found this thread
HTC ONE
I did everthing s-off....flashed to the old radio baseband....tried everything still havent got any signal....who know what a problem?
The only thing is that I've flashed my sprint htc one to the Straight talk. Could it cause a problem?
I am also trying to unlock for T-Mobile. Running into the same issues as others. I was reading a thread where someone was apparently using it on T-Mobile, and PMed them on how exactly they did it but never got a response.
Would love to hear if anyone has it working on T-Mobile
This works. :victory:
Only need to extract, modify and zip again.
Flash with TWRP.
And everything is working normally, no need to reinstall or root, or whatever.
The only problem is that every time I turn on the phone, I get the error message VDM, but it disappears instantly, without stopping or forcing any application.
I live outside the U.S., and continues to operate all perfect with SIMUnlockerHelper. :fingers-crossed:
My device: Sprint Htc one = Unlockboot, TWRP, SIMUnlocker Helper, Root, and the rom on the top of the post. (benny's 4.3 LOL)
it actually works, but if you're using a sense rom I think you only need to download the apps in the op and replacing in system/app
I did this with insertcoin 6.0-4, the unlock helper app didn't recognize the rom, but with the terminal emulator method it worked just fine, tried with a sim and all fine ... then put again the original apks and you don't have to deal with any error popups
Interesting. I was under the impression that our version of this device did not support domestic (only international) GSM bands, hardware wise.
Is this version of sim unlocking different than what you would get if you asked Sprint? (they do allow you to unlock it if you meet certain criteria, like good account standing)

it supports the bands, but all the radios except the original one block domestic gsm carriers. if you still unlock and use that radio, it'll work.
Not working
I tried everything mentioned above, ( Unlock bootloader, S-OFF, Root) also changed the 2 apps in the system for the 4.3 ROM Stock rooted deodexed and then used the SIM unlock helper.
Then Got the same result : No GSM signal, and the SPRINT logo still on the top when I make a call, the same answer comes: " Error number 16 script 3."
I'm using Straight Talk Sim by ATT.

[Q] Rooting N900A to Lollipop while using T-mobile.

Ugh, I am having so many issues with this at the moment. One of those things being that I am using T-mobile as my carrier. I'm stuck on 4.4 at the moment, and need to update it. But, will that relock the phone? How do I re-unlock it if that happens? I've already read that I can't flash the phone to T-mobile ROM, but are there any custom ROMs that you would recommend [I do actually use the S-pen, not sure if any have been updated to where that can still be used.] Lastly, is there any way to get mobile hotspot and tethering to work now that I am using tmobile?

I never tried this Rom.
T-Mobile Alliance Lollipop Rom on ATT Note 3
http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-att/general/t-mobile-alliance-rom-att-note-3-t3065127 I don't think you would have to worry about any of this as you are using T-Mobile " After the phone came up, I went to settings..general..applications...running .... and found every Tmobile app and cleared cache and disabled them. The real important one here is the Visual Voicemail. Otherwise it will keep on trying to contact Tmobile and then you will get text messages saying there is an error. Thanks @sapps
Wifi Calling is throwing a sim card error (as you would expect). Only problem is it is shown in status bar and lockscreen. I'm sure there is a way to hide it or disable it. I just haven't had a chance to figure it out."

But it's the N900A, so it's the AT&T version. Won't that brick the phone if I put the tmobile ROM on it? That's what I've read in other threads on here anyway. [Honestly I shouldn't write when I'm tired, or I would have explained this better.]. Basically, I bought an unlocked AT&T phone. A Note 3 to be exact. It's stuck on 4.4 but can upgrade to lolipop. Nothing I try will let me upgrade the normal way. I'm not sure how to upgrade it without relocking the SIM card somehow. Or is the simcard already semi-locked and that's why it's giving me the error? I also can't even find a AT&T specific rooting guide for this phone. I saw every other carrier except AT&T, does that even make a difference? And are there any ROMs that can return S-pen programs after I install them, or should I just stop at rooting if I want that? If so, I just really want to upgrade to lollipop and root the phone. I would like my mobile hotspot and wifi calling to work, but I suppose I can make do with hangouts.

It won't brick you phone. It's a T-Mobile Rom that's been ported for AT&T Note 3. After you flash the Rom, you have to Odin the N900A_OC1_ALL_Other_Stock_Partitions.tar.md5 using Odin's PDA slot. As far as rooting what you have now, just use Towel root https://towelroot.com/ (install on phone like any other app) and click "make it rain". Install Supersu, busybox and Safestrap. OR use Kingo Root http://www.kingoapp.com/ (Kingo Root will install supersu for you). The reason it won't upgrade to Lollipop is you have a T-Mobile sim card in it. It needs a AT&T sim card (I have AT&T and can't upgrade mine unless the sim card is in the phone). If you just want a rooted Lollipop Rom, but it's AT&T http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=59666958&postcount=2 You know since you're on T-Mobile you have to go into settings>more networks>mobile networks>access point names and change it to T-Mobile's APN. I would just root it and put the T-Mobile Alliance Lollipop Rom on ATT Note 3 on it. I gave it a try yesterday and it does have T-Mobile apps on it, just not for me. Just remember to change the APN to T-Mobile's ( just write down the one you using now).

Need to understand if I switch sim cards to another service

I want to know if I have T-Mobile service with a rooted phone and I switch to straight talk can I still flash T-Mobile roms? If there is a thread that always explain this please point me in the right direction thanks!!!!!! I did a search not sure if I was putting it in right but couldn't find anything.
You can flash via ODIN without issues.
If the device is factory unlocked then you shouldn't have any issues using another provider , as long as it is sim-based of course, in any case you might need to look up the proper APN configuration for said service in order to get it working properly; worst case scenario any T-mobile based MVNO will work with it.
Yes, you can still flash roms via TWRP recovery, or stock .tar's via odin. I have a N910T on AT&T Cricket & still got the 5.1.1 ota before I rooted.

Note 3 N900A can't make calls on T-Mobile, can I flash T-Mobile rom?

I think T-Mo might have done some stuff to the network recently, not sure what happened but suddenly I cannot make calls. Data is fine, but when I try to call it goes "Dialing.." but won't connect.
is there a way to flash T-Mo rom or anything to try?
Thanks.
Tried a SIM card from another carrier?
No, you cannot flash a stock T-mobile ROM to the 900a but you may be able to flash a custom ROM based on a stock T-Mobile ROM.
Thread moved to proper forum.

Any Solution for "No Mic in Call" on Custom 5.1+ ROMs?

I have an XT1058 with the bootloader unlocked (via Sunshine) running version 30.B2 and the stock AT&T modem firmware. I have TWRP 2.8.7 in case anyone cares. I have SIM-unlocked the phone and am using it on T-Mobile. Everything works great but I'd like to get off the stock AT&T 5.1 ROM. However every custom ROM I've tried loses the ability to use the microphone in call (nobody can hear me unless I use speakerphone). Everything is working normally on stock ROM. I have probably read 20 different threads talking about this issue, many of which say something like "flash the modem firmware" or "update the bootloader version" without being any more specific. I've flashed plenty of ROMs on this device and others but have never tried doing it piecemeal before - I've always flashed the entire ROM.
This is the closest thing I have found to a solution but it's not very specific with instructions or how to:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/general/5-1-speakerphone-bug-fixed-bootloader-t3186382
Plus the last poster in the thread has exactly the same question as me, and it has no response.
Bottom line - I do not want to lose unlocked bootloader or my SIM unlock. I suspect that I can re-use my SIM unlock code if I flash a modem but am not 100% sure.
This phone is my daily driver. So I need the phone calls to work. Making calls on speakerphone is not a good workaround.
But I really want to be able to use one of the custom Mashmallow or Nougat ROMs, or even the LOS ROM regardless of version so I can get away from the AT&T bloatware.
Anyone have a solution for this?
