Hiya everyone,
I've been looking to replace my old Nokia Lumia 630 for some time now, for something a little better this time. Recently I discovered the OEM Chinese phone market quite recently and I found the Xiaomi Mi 5, which looks amazing.
From what I've seen it offers flagship-like specs (Snapdragon 820, 3GB RAM and a fairly decent looking camera) for a ridiculously cheap price, which is great but is also worrying too. Does this mean Xiaomi has compromised the build quality of the phone, the software or even the internals to keep the device as cheap as possible?
In the end you get what you pay for, but do you get that little bit better with the Mi 5???

There are lots of reviews out there. I think the phone is great especially now cm 13 is available

Reviewers only tend to use the phone for a couple of days to a week unfortunately, so online reviews aren't always the best to look at if you want to know the long term performance of a phone.
Also is CM13 working well? I'd be worried to try it out as it would void the warranty with the seller I'm looking at and since its only recently just been released, it would be bound to have bugs.
I've been using the MI 5 for about a month now and I really like it. I was coming from a Samsung S6 and I think that the MI 5 is every bit as good. The things that I really like about it are the bright screen, one of the most visible outside that I have seen, and the slim body and the light weight. I say go for it, I don't think that you will be disappointed.,

Is there anything worth noting before buying the Mi 5 such as bad connectivity, buggy OS etc??
Mi5 is innocent one but it's packed with crappy global ROM.

Have you tried any of the other ROMs such as the Chinese ROM, the xiaomi.eu ROM, or even CM13 ? I think the supplier I'm looking at ships the phone with the Chinese ROM, and to avoid voiding any warranty I'd probably have to stick with that.

I tried every ROM except CM13. I have downloaded but still not flashed. Still not getting interested until it reaches a reasonable stability. But I am seeing good progress with that dev As yesterday also an updated version released.

That's cool, but I would also be a bit uneasy on flashing a custom ROM onto the device. Just out of interest whats xiaomi.eu like? I hear a lot of good reviews on it so, if I do get it, I'd ask the reseller if they would flash that ROM.

I am wondering why you are quite rigid for installing custom ROM. As long as you are outside China, I wonder how will you claim warranty.

You won't void the guarantee by unlocking the bootloader / flashing custom rom / flashing TWRP or whatever. You can always flash an official MIUI rom with flash_all_lock.bat script and it will lock your phone and return to factory settings. Nobody will be able to see that you modified your device's firmware.

I live in the UK, so Xiaomi's warranty would be completely useless. I meant the 12 month warranty I'd get of the reseller (which would probably be eglobalcentral.co.uk)

I don't really know how to flash a ROM at the moment, never-mind changing scripts inside of the phone. Knowing my luck I will probably break it xD.

No, I live behind a hill that doesn't have the best signal and that's the main reason that I bought the phone, I think that the Snapdragon chip has a much better phone radio than Samsung's Exynos chip that we get in Samsung phones in Asia. With the MI 5 my dropped call problem disappeared. Mine has the global ROM on it and I'm very satisfied with it. I didn't care for the keyboard so I changed that but all of my apps work perfectly as well as notification LEDs, etc.
Do your homework, research the phone, read other peoples comments/experience and decide on your own. As for the thread about people having problems with build quality etc, I haven't seen any of that. As with all forums it tends to only be the people with problems that post. As for warranties I think you may have problems claiming no matter who the seller is.
In my opinion you won't regret getting an mi5 and you should put cm13 on it (it's extremely easy to flash roms). Apply for your unlocked boot loader right now (you don't need to have the phone to apply) so you have it if you need it.

I've done a bit of research but everyone has really strong mixed opinions on the phone, its almost as if its a gamble whether you get a good phone or a bad one .

There is always a risk when flashing any electronic device whether its a phone or not but the risk is minimal. I have done loads of phones over the years and never had an issue. I havent noticed any functions not working with cm13. There have been some posts about soft home button not working but I never used it anyway (not even sure what it is they are talking about TBH) so as far as my use is concerned everything works perfectly. The battery life on cm13 is better than any of the official roms and everything is very smooth. Remember you need to get the bootloader unlocked by requesting it from xioami (think it took about a week if i remember correctly).

After two weeks of normal usage, I would say no. I originally got the phone with Global Rom pre-installed and have since then installed China Rom (non dev version) and recently flashed it with the latest stable EU Rom. I also have the latest TWRP recovery and SuperSU.
The main reason why I got this phone is because of the ability of flashing other Roms.

I am currently considreing this dual sim phone as an upgrade from my Lenovo P780 which has horrible problems with reception.
Can we expect more ROMs for P7 dual sim soon? So for I see almost none I like pure android roms not a 3rd party GUI.

I think the dual sim model is the P7-L00 variant. There are a number of custom ROMs for this variant. To give you an idea check this site out:

You'll need to make use of Google translate to work out what the features are.
Pretty much all of the ROM development is occuring in China. It's likely to stay that way as well. The phone is not being sold on a global basis and as far as I can see sales are confined to Europe and China. I imported mine from Hong Kongas they are not sold where I live.
It's a nice phone. Quite responsive, good display, good specs and very lightweight. I've not experienced any major issues. If you wnt a phone with heaps of ROM development then you need to look elsewhere.

China ROMs are not an option for me...
Its a shame there are no standard ROMs I was about to buy this phone... cant seem to find a decent dual som replacment with good camera and pure android rom option,

This device just came out few months ago, now Vodafone is starting to sell them too so I'm sure it will have a decent popularity in Europe in these months to come.
And for the default ROM with EmotionUI, I was surprised for how fast and reliable it was. I'm a veteran coming from multiple Android devices and I have tried all their different ROM flavours (from CyanogenMod to MoKee, MIUI to SlimKat, and a lot more) and this EmotionUI ROM made from Huawei really is great, that I have left apart my maniac obsession of custom ROMs for now.
I'm sure if you'll consider one day to buy this device you won't regret it, and the design in my opinion is absolutely stunning. Everytime I take it out from my pocket, everybody will start to look at it curiously for at least 5 seconds.

Yeah the Honor 6 is a beast, it's the big brother of the Ascend P7. I was considering buying it too but then I prefered the deisgn of latter one, it's just a matter of tastes.
It's a wonderful, powerful and cheap phone.
So, everyone 'should' be buying it and there 'should' be masses of ROMS, like the OP2 etc, but I fear, it won't.
Take a look at the thread for the Lenovo ZUK Z1 - this is a great phone for the price. This should really have gone far, but didn't - why? Because there was no real international launch, not really. Whilst it did have an international ROM and ZUI, it floundered on international release. There are a few ROMS.
The Elephone E9000 - another great phone, but no real international release. No ROMs.
This phone, I fear, having no international release will mean developers will not buy it. No one will develop for it and it will simply fall into obscurity, a hidden treasure unfortunately.
I really hope I'm totally wrong.
You are wrong, just look at previous xiaomi phones.. I ordered mine yesterday and I really don't like miui so I wouldn't have ordered it if it wasn't because I know cm13 and all other roms will come.

Im asking myself the same, for me, software availability is the most important thing for a smartphone. And i wont buy the mi 5 until i know for sure that there will be custom roms.

Well, a lot of people is waiting for avaibility/lower price (like me), so for the fact that is a bit quiet I think it's because are still early times.
The biggest issues with devices like these is that developer teams normally don't buy the device. This happens for many reasons. Oem not following the GPL being one of them. Also they tend to get mostly nexus devices or flagship. You really do get what you pay for. So paying a bit more for a better devices just makes sense.

No, not at all. After about 10 days I got airplane mode issue that can't be solved now, I had only 7 days replacement warranty :/ Camera also not of that level. So don't go for it.

The camera is not good and the fingerprint sensor fails after a few months, but the long battery life is awesome and software support (CM14, NucleaROM) is great. It depends on what you want/need. As a practical, affordable tool, the Zuk Z1's a great phone.
I probably wouldn't consider it if I weren't putting a custom ROM on it, though.

Yes I would surely recommend you this phone. First thing is that its battery is very efficient. Next is that I liked its front camera 8MP. Performance is also quite good.

I do think, though, that if his wife wants a nice camera, she should look for another phone.

What's your problem with this phone and why are you only talking about getting custom roms???
I have my ZUK1 since more than a year as a daily driver. Travelled the world with it using its dual sim function to the fullest. Use my fingerprint reader every day and has not failed nor can I confirm the other problems people are "experiencing".
I do read a lot here and can only assume that a lot of the "problems" are self inflicted, flashing and or unlocking/rooting while they don't have a clue what they are doing...:silly:
My phone is stock COS12.1 since day 1.
About the camera...its not the best but for the money you pay descent enough.
I have also a NOTE 4 and can say the ZUK1 it beats the Samsung with ease and that for less than half the price.
And if you are scared reading about problems with a phone, please do yourself a favour and go and read on the Samsung NOTE 4 section...that's suppose to be a flagship phone!
Would I buy the ZUK1 again? YES, for the 200€ I paid more than a year ago it has fulfilled all its promises and is still going strong...but then again thinking about it, maybe its better that you buy another phone as I am sure I bought the ONLY good ZUK1 ever build!

I have my zuk z1 since October last year and flashed a rom a few weeks ago cause of all the problems with the standard software, yes I did try a factory reset to see if it solves my problems wich it didn't. The hardware of this phone is good enough the only problem I have is that my fingerprint scanner doesn't work anymore. The biggest problem is the software, it's buggy, slow, still runs on lollipop and the last security update is form June

Lolipop is pathetic, with default operating system screen was way too yellowish (even after customizing colors), finger print button wasn't working as home button, too old operating system the default one is.
I also won't recommend, even if you he goes with it I'll recommend custom rom.
Phone is great, really a value for money device. I was one of the first that took the risk to buy it more than 1.5year ago, but it turned out it was the best choice. ZUK Z1 still going strong in 2017.

I agree, good value for money! Has the best GPS I ever encountered in a smartphone...
When I unpacked my "brand new" phone more than a year ago it had (still has) a small nick in the frame next to the USB charging point, that's how it came off the production line. Got the phone off ebay.de and decided it wasn't wort the hassle to get is shipped back and replaced. Lenovo probably "marked" the few good phones...:laugh:

I am in the US and will be buying it online to use on T-Mobile, I would like to know if anyone is here also using it and how is the reception? Do you get LTE? Also I've read in the roms section about a lithium and hydrogen version? Are they from different regions, what makes them different? I'm using a Mate 9 but am ready to own this phone.

I had it and here in Europe, I am on T Mobile as well but without LTE connection, and I had various problems with it, mostly about not localised and optimised software, very bad camera, handling (very slippery)...etc.About Roms, there are global roms and other roms and I found them pretty unstabile.
Literary, if you speak Chinese, then this is phone for you, if not, from my experiance, for that money better buy Samsung S8+.It is more serious product.
Before you start using Mi Mix you need to create MIUI account which is bounded with your phone number,so eventual reselling is another problem.
Anyway....it is beautiful device but for costs of a lot of headaches.

The official Global Rom has all the languages, so no problem with the language (and it includes Google Play and it doesn't include any chinese-only apps)
There is a also a port of the LineageOS Rom and the RESURRECTION REMIX Rom.
The biggest problem is that you will not have any warranty, no service, no spare parts. If you are willing to resign from these for the best looking device, go ahead!
I can't speak for Tmo, but att I rarely get LTE but it is available, mostly HSPA+ though
The camera is a disappointment, but I was coming from a galaxy s6 so I was a little spoiled
If you are comfortable with flashing roms, I'm really enjoying the resurrection remix rom
It's a big usability improvement coming from the chinese stable rom
I have TMobile I get 4G I'm in NY my camera takes good pics I'm on the global stock MIUI rom and get insurance thru 3 party

I'm using this on MetroPCS and for the most part it has been very very solid for me. MetroPCS is basically the same network as Tmobile. On EpicRom I have LTE and my calls work just fine. Also, the version of Epic ROM I used had VoLTe support. Not even 100% on what it does but the option was checked off.
If you don't believe me just go to willmyphonework.net and type in Xiaomi Mi Mix and it will tell you exactly what carriers will work.

Before you start using Mi Mix you need to create MIUI account which is bounded with your phone number,so eventual reselling is another problem.
Anyway....it is beautiful device but for costs of a lot of headaches.

THIS GUY AGAIN, seriously though I actually have this phone on T-Mobile US, South Carolina Upstate area. It connects at 4G LTE in almost every place my wifes Samsung S7 Edge does. Durability wise you have to keep in mind its slippery and needs a case if for anything else to keep a grip on it. Screens fantastic, connections on par with US models and the storage /ram is unequalled currently. Had a mate 9 just before it and there really worlds apart. Now the camera is MEH, be prepared for that - its not bad just MEH. Everything else is really good, bonus it has built in equalizer for head phone playback [which means I didn't need to root it to put viper on].
I use the shipped Chinese official, google apps all installed with no issues. You can buy the S8+ if you want to step down in storage, ram and over all screen to phone. Personally the S8+ and the LG 6 are basically the same compromised high price devices. But its your money, both break fast when dropped also.
Haven't had a single head ache out of the Mi Mix or the MIUI [been using it on other devices for years]. Shoot me questions if you want.
Thank you all for your posts they have been helpful. I definitely wouldn't buy another Samesung ever again. I do love rooting and romming my phones, I have been following the ROM section and yesterday when I checked up on it I seen the additions of lineage and RR both I ran on my Nexus 6P and OnePlus 3T. Those were a big deciding factor for me because I can't live without my aosp, and now with the reassurance of LTE working I think I will be jumping in on this beast.

Go for it. It's one of the best device I've ever owned.
Don't worry about it when people say that they are having trouble with softwares that are not "localised or optimised". They don't know what they are talking about. The ROM is not really an issue at all, just flash to third party ROM like EPIC Rom, or you can use Xiaomi's Global Rom.
And don't be misguided, you don't need a MI account to use any Xiaomi device, that includes the MI MIX.
This is my second Xiaomi phone and I'm running off the stock Chinese Rom which I have no issue with. There's no need to create a MI account to use this phone.
Here is my opinion->
- The phone is great in build quality with the most premium material(ceramic);
- It has huge amount of storage(I have 256GB);
- It has a lot of RAM(6GB for me);
- It has the best Android iteration - MIUI;
- It has quite some innovations brought at once in terms of tech;
- It has great battery life;
- It is too big;
- It has the worst camera I've had for quite some time;
I will stick to mine for the good reasons, but really regret for the camera.
Make your math and good luck.
P.S.
If you buy one, install Camera FV or some other app. You will get far better shots.

Don't mind the comments about that this is for chinese market only, or the MIUI account is bad....etc. The phone works perfectly on most places(but still do a check for your country) and MIUI is great performer with lot's of cool stuff. I am using their system since my Samsung Galaxy Nexus
The problem with MIUI is not that it doesn't perform well.
It may still be on Android 6 and it is missing the enhancements of API 24 and API 25 but it has other additional features that compensate for this.
The problem is that it is closed source and you cannot know what the code does in the background, and whether it sends data back home. But thank god, there are now ports of LINEAGE and RESSURECTION REMIX roms. So no reason not to get the device from a software perspective.
Well, you got a lot ppl here telling you some good, some, but here my 2 cents. I love the phone! I love the big screen, I dont use the camera so I dont care, I like the call quality. Its cool being that there is no earpiece yet, you can still hear the ppl youre talking to. You may have to turn the volume all the way up in certain situations, but its fine. I love the fluidity, moving around the phone is very snappy, I never have any issues. I do play Pokemon Go, a lot, and that isnt as smooth as it is on the iPhone, but its not bad. It did freeze on me when I dropped a lucky egg and went through to try and evolve as many Pokemon as I could. The battery life is the BEST IVE EVER HAD on a phone before... well, maybe the battery life on the Nokia Lumia 1520 was better, but I cant recall. Now, EMUI as a whole isnt bad, it really isnt! I am currently using stock, chinese ROM. and as far as I know, im on the latest firmware. But, as soon as I get my hands on a Windows based computer, im going to root it and install a custom ROM. Ive heard Epic is supposed to be the best, but im the type of guy that will flash a few ROM's before I settle. I could go on and on about this phone as a daily driver, but, I really do like it. If you have any specifics, hit me up and id be more than willing to answer your questions. But long story short, I love the phone.

You're gonna get addicted, especially to the screen and build materials! Have seen tear-down videos, and even the inside is beautiful! I rotate to different phones often and you will find yourself wanting when using phones after this one. Questions will subconsciously creep into your head when you go back to a different phone; ie. "why is there a bar at the top of this phone?""why does the back of this phone scratch so easily?" Its like seeing a slice of the future in a dream and then waking up to a disappointing reality as you grab that iOS or Pixel device. You've been warned.

I recently picked one up, I have the Chinese Rom version, 256gb 6gig of ram. I've been using it for a month now in CA and NY and I can say without a shadow of a doubt that this is the best device I have ever owned, hands down, nothing comes close. I honestly haven't had a issue with the camera but I don't take many shots with the phone so I don't care. As for MIUI I really like it, as a 1st time user of it, it has a very different feel and look to regular stock android which is very refreshing to me. You end up purchasing one, you will not regret it.
I've also had the phone great phone but I'm one of those people who likes to change phones every few months.
MIUI was great to use and if you get board just us a different launcher, now only thing you need to know if your staying on Chinese build is disabling a few power saving features to get push notifications like what's app, email etc
My only issue letting it go was I wanted the 7.0 to use 2 app support and I really didn't like the notification tray, tried exposed but couldn't change it the way I wanted. Again this will probably not bother you but overall it's a great phone once you fiddle around the software.

Pros and cons
I've had my Mi Mix (International stock rom, 6gb, 256gb) for a few days. I got it on sale on Gearbest for $606! Here's some pros and cons so far:
Pros:
-I'm on AT&T and I get 4g LTE all the time in my area.
-Insane amount of storage. I can't imagine ever maxing this thing out.
-A very good screen (though not as colorful or as sharp as what you'll find on Samsung's new phones).
-Excellent performance (though again, not quite as snappy as the S8+, which my wife owns).
-The most beautiful device I have ever held! Pictures do not do it justice. It is simply exquisite.
-The camera is plenty good for my purposes (taking pictures of my kids when we're on outdoor adventures).
-Watching videos and playing games on that bezel-free screen is awesome!
Cons:
-MIUI does have a bit of a learning curve.
-You have to change battery and notification settings quite a bit to get push notifications working properly (though this only takes 15 minutes to do).
-I had issues with text messages for a couple days before I found a fix. Now they work perfectly.
-The phone is very slippery.
-Ceramic, while very scratch resistant, shatters easily. (I'm using the provided leather case most of the time.)
-Despite the tiny bezels, the phone is still big and heavy. There's no way to make a 6.4 inch screen feel small in the hand.
-Call quality, while adequate, is nowhere near as clear as on my Moto Z or my wife's S8+. It sounds like the other person is on speaker phone.
-The camera, while fine for me, would never be good enough for my wife (she has a blog and needs professional-quality images, which she really can get with her S8+).
All in all, the pros definitely outweigh the cons FOR ME. But they might not for everyone. I hope this helps.

It depends on what you will do with the device, how app-intensive is your day in the context of the number of apps you have open at any one time.
At this point though, there is little to no reason not to go for the 6Gb RAM/256Gb Storage version.
The Mix has good roms now (RR, Lineage) with no bugs, so if you're thinking about going that way, then the stock rom doesn't matter.
I would recommend going for having the Global rom when you're buying. Why? Because all devices are factory flashed with the chinese roms, but if you want a global one, then the vendor will take care of unlocking the device & they usually leave it that way, without bothering re-locking it again.
This means that you can flash from day 1 & don't need to bother applying for unlock permissions.

My apologies for not being specific in my original post. I'll be getting the 256gb Mi Mix, and was attempting to refer to which rom version to choose.
You did however answer that as well, which is much appreciated. Then I'll be looking for one with the global rom.

global rom supports multilanguage, google play etc
6GB /256GB ... get an untampered one with the Chinese rom, unlock it your self and root it yourself then choose the rom YOU want. There are many complaints here and there about Vendor roms with adds and malware etc. Best way to avoid those is go in stock [Chinese] and do the work yourself to root and rom it.

I bought mine on AliExpress, including shipping to UK for 256GB model ￡430.08. I got sealed, don`t want anybody to install any ROMs on my phone. I`m not waiting for 72hrs to pass so that I can unlock bootloader and install Global ROM.

It has NFC and Android Pay in the Global ROM.
I paid £435 from geekbuying no other fee to pay amazing phone this one is a keeper for sure a iconic phone.That screen is just in your face it will turn heads.

Best phone I have ever owned purely due to quality of screen. Switched to EE network from Vodafone - zero issues with data/internet, quite fast.
I'm in the US, just purchased mine off Swappa. Hardware is incredible, but software is pretty bad. Miui lacks a lot of features I've grown to expect from Nougat phones (safetynet, split screen, double click recent to go to last app, nav bar that doesn't look awful, quick reply inside notifications, ambient display, etc).
Resurrection Remix is very close to being done. Only real issue left is a 2 second delay between when you click power button/double tap to wake/hit fingerprint sensor until screen turns on. MIUI is lightning fast, so it's definitely just software issue that can hopefully get fixed. Everything else is rock solid on RR, and it even passes safetynet. Once this wakeup lag gets fixed, phone will be perfect.
