Hello
The default camera app only uses the max ISO while at superior auto And at 8 MP...
With manual mode you can only use 3200 of it...again at 8 MP.
For me sounds not very nice...I used Xposed Module(20MP superior auto) to make superior auto at 15.5 MP and have high ISO but I noticed it will again lower the max ISO...
I want max res (for me 15.5 @16:9) with max ISO...
So now I'm starting to dig in camera app to see if that controls the ISO (so I mod it and make it better) or something else...
Anyone having an idea that what controls the ISO?
Kernel?
Something at build.prop?
Or camera app?
Or it is a hardware limited?

Max ISO just fills the picture with noise.
I don't understand why you want to make the ISO so high, it just makes the picture quality worse, where are you going to take photos, a coal mine?
@Didgesteve
Hehe no...NO...not to make it always at max...
When at 8 MP the camera max ISO can go to 12800 at night in auto mode...but at 15.5 it will not...it will limit it to something like 3200 I think
I just want to delete the limiter or adjust it to use the full ISO at 15.5 if needed...
I like taking pictures at night...you try it yourself...sometimes it's very nice that you see what your eyes even can't see at nights...
Have any ideas where the ISO is controlled?
I saw a lot of codes at the camera app written in binary to adjust the ISO... Idont know what to do with binary codes...for example this line:
field public static final cam_strings_iso_12800_txt:I = 0x7f0901ed
Any ideas?

Do you guys have any opinions on what the best camera mode is for general shooting?
I'm trying to pick between Superior Auto, Manual 8MP and Manual 20.7MP.
Thoughts?
My pick is 20.7 MP with image stabilizer enabled, better results without it if you have a steady hand.
I use no scene, auto white balance (unless the auto gets it wrong), 20.7 MP, multi metering mode, image stabilize enabled.
To increase sharpness and reduce noise I then downsample the image to a width of about 3500px using Irfanview, because it's much better than Sony's crappy oversampling algorithm that it uses for the 8MP images.

- HDR Off
- ISO auto
- Metering Spot
- IS off (I prefer)

Hello.
I've been looking around the settings in manual mode, and the iso there only goes to 3200, but if am not mistaken, the camera should support iso 12800 as well, don't suppose anyone know where to find that setting?
I have the same exact question
Sent from my D5803 using Tapatalk
It will use ISO 12800 when you're using Superior Auto; I'm not sure how to invoke it otherwise.
What tells you its using ISO 12800 in Superior Auto? Kinda weird if that's the only place it's used...

only on the output image, look at EXIF
you can't manually select ISO 12800, only force/trick it in Superior Auto
maybe root+xposed/camera mods would fix it
Or in low light conditions, go to Manual, Scene, High sensitivity. It will choose iso 12800 if it's dark enough. And I find the results quite impressive.
change tge resolution and check.
ISO setting at 20.7 mp extends upto 3200. At 8 mp, it extends upto 12800.
Need to set cam to Manual, 8mp, High ISO sensitivity. It will use 12800 ISO if it is really dark.
I'm considering buying the Nokia 8 but would first prefer to know whether or not the phone allows third party camera apps like Camera FV-5 or Snap Camera HDR to tune sharpening and noise reduction, or altogether switch these off.
Any Nokia 8 owners who have tried this and can tell if this works or not?
You can use any camera app you like
Thanks. I am sure that is true.
My question is specific. If I install a camera app that allows tuning post processing (sharpening and noise reduction), will this work on the Nokia 8?
Not all phone makers expose these controls in the camera APIs.
For example, Samsung's Galaxy phones equipped with Exynos chips does not permit tuning post processing while their SnapDragon models do this.

I have both Camera FV-5 and Manual Camera so I could check if such options are there if you tell me where to look as I don't recall seeing something like that in their preferences (I had Nexus 6P previously).
Thanks. I'll check when I reach home in a few hours.

You can check in Camera FV-5. See my screenshots where to find sharpening. If you take a photo first before adjusting and then after with sharpening set to minimum: will you see difference in quality, when zooming in to 100% ?

Well, it is by default set to 0 here (all sliders in this window are) so I would have to manually change it to higher value in order to do any comparison.
Okay, thanks. So probably doesn't work then. I guess I need to consider other phones. ?
On my current phone (Asus PFS) it's set to almost zero but adjusting it has no effect on picture quality.
Ok, when I tried to move that slider it turned out it is impossible. So that fully answers your question
Just find an app that takes RAW images and use that. Then adjust said parameters to your heart’s content
I'd rather buy another phone that supports this.
If you have Camera2 API enabled in your phone, try Snap Camera - you can tune everything here. Just enable Camera2 API in the settings, then the noise is preserved. Adjustable sharpness, saturation etc... The only option missing here for me is long exposure mode. On my Redmi 4X it allows only 1" shutter time max (still I can get nice night pictures on ISO 250 with this interval).
Also, you can try FreeDCam and disable Wavelet Denoise in the settings to turn off noise reduction.
Finally, Google Camera port is really great camera app for daily usage, especially for HDR pictures - it uses Camera2 API by default and produces amazing shots with all details (subtle noise) preserved. Unfortunately, you can't adjust any of parameters like sharpness or saturation.
All those apps are tested on my Xiaomi Redmi 4x but it will hopefully work for you if your phone supports Camera2 API.
So you tested on a Xiaomi Redmi 4x but haven't tested on a Nokia 8?
Those features are very much dependant on whether or not the phone supports them. And no way of knowing without buying the phone and testing and then finding out the good or bad news.
So far the hints from previous posters above is that the Nokia 8 does NOT support full control over post processing.
What are the best settings in Pro mode to photograph stars. I'm working on an iso of 3200 and a shutter speed all the way up to 30. What other settings are suggested. I'm not sure what the eV and af are...
Any answers here ?
You'd want a tripod for your P20 Pro, set your iso anywhere above 3200, your shutter to 10+ seconds, leave your EV (exposure value) to 0 and AF (autofocus) to MF (manual focus) and focus to infinity so it doesn't shift focus way from your subject (in this case the sky). Ensure you're photographing a clear and dark sky as well. You can find more at davemorrowphotography, which has a tutorial on this.
Hope that helps!
Think along the same lines as using a DSLR. Have the shutter open no longer than 30 seconds. Stay under 3200 and make sure you're set to infinity. With a phone you'll really need dark sky's. Don't expect the photo to be of sharp quality because keep in mind the size of the sensor that's in the phone compared to that of a DSLR
Did you try the star mode? It's very cool
hi, where can I buy a good head to fit the phone in a Manfrotto tripod ?
Hello everyone, I noticed that with FooteJ camera, the manual controls only allows up to 10s exposure. It's 32s max on much cheaper Redmi Note 7. Is it possible to increase the max exposure time?

Camera PX works with up to 30-32s on a stock Pixel 4, if you set the max astro time setting in the settings. But that doesn't mean it will pick exactly 30s, it is all automatic still - it just overrides the maximum time (stock is 16s max). To get longer than 10s in 3rd party apps, someone will have to modify the system libs and you'll have to root to apply that (there aren't any mods available yet for this).

Thanks for responding cstark. By the way, is it possible for camera PX to increase the frame captured for astrophotography mode? The default was 15 frames right?
Astro mode uses many shots and aligns them as obvious things like the stars are moving between shots collected. I don't think the actual hardware is capable of true long exposure shots.
