Marshmellow 6.01 - Issues since upgrade - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There!
Since updating to MM 6.01 my phone has been behaving differently and in a way I don't like:
1) My Email app doesn't seem to update regularly. I am set to push emails and prior to MM I had no issues, but since the update, my phone often won't sync emails even if I tell it to manually. I checked the server and it's not even seeing an attempt to communicate. I believe I have tracked it down to power save mode which stops data in the background. Rebooting fixes it mostly. Turning off power mode fixes it.
2) I play a lot of clash of clans, before, if I left the phone inactive for a minute, the connection would remain intact and I could resume. Now I get a message saying I've lost connection to the server and I have to re open and re-login.
I was happy with how those two apps behaved previously, I'd like to get back to that, however when I turned off power management mode, my battery went flat in about 2.5 hours! I was happy with my battery life previously as well.
How can I tell email to be excluded from power management, or even clash of clans please?

I can't be the only one that is having these issues, surely. Is no-one else experiencing it?

Seems like basically all your issues are resolving around having to have sync turned off, power saving also restricts your CPU to 1.7ghz from 2.1ghz...if you're seeing crazy battery drain i would recommend a factory reset and if problems with battery drain persist i would clean flash factory firmware in odin, everything about your experience with mm should be BETTER than LP or something isn't right...

Battery Drain After Stock 2.3.5 Gingerbread Update

I've been looking everywhere and tried multiple methods to try and fix the following problem but without any success... please help!
I have a stock captivate which came with 2.1, upgraded to stock 2.2 last year, and just last week upgraded to stock 2.3.5. Never rooted or anything like that.
Up until last week, while I was still on 2.2, I had fantastic battery life, draining maybe 1% per hour when idle. After the update to 2.3.5 I'm now draining 10% per hour when idle. I've tried different watching apps to try and catch a culprit but I'm at a loss to point to anything. All the apps I'm using are unchanged from when I was on 2.2. My best guess is that it has something to do with wifi.
When I left the phone untouched on idle last night it showed 30% wifi and 25% cell standby for battery usage. My wifi sleep policy is set to never which is what I had on 2.2. I leave wifi on all the time, but I left it on all the time with 2.2 without any of these issues. I have 5 bars and am located near a cell tower so that isn't any different either.
I've tried factory reset as well as a couple cycles of draining the battery all the way down and filling it all the way up without any change. From a UI standpoint, I like the new Gingerbread update but 10% drain/hour when idle compared to a couple days when idle with Froyo makes the phone much less usable... Help!!
You could have an app that is running in the background taking up alot of ram and or CPU peformance. This can cause your battery to drain faster. Having a live wallpaper as well as apps that update in the background will also shorten your battery life.
however, there are many apps out there that monitor what the other apps on your phone are doing and will let you know if there is a rogue app taking up battery. Also, if you have the stock battery look into a new one. Its probably old by now and somewhat tired out.
I had the same battery drain issue upgrading to froyo. I ended up finding a custom GB rom and the battt drain slowed but is still faster than the stock rom. All apps have stayed the same since day 1. At this point I'm afraid to touch it again since it the wifes, and was a bit upset about the last time.

This was happening to me when I updated to GB but found it was one of the apps(No LED and Vlingo). I uninstalled and then reinstallled them and it stpped draining as fast in idle. I would also suggest getting the 1800mAh OEM battery for the Epic 4g Touch. It works great in our phones with 15 to 20% more life.
email app draining battery
I also updated few days ago to gingerbread official UCKK4 and after that my battery drains at around 5pm, whereas before it was around 11pm with froyo.
the battery log says email app is sucking it up. the email accounts are exatly the same 2 I had before: hotmail and company both configured as exchange.
Solutions?
thanks!

It seems like a lot of people are complaining of issues after the update. The most reliable solution would be backing everything up and performing a factory reset. Just be aware that when you do it, you will lose EVERYTHING on your phone that isn't already backed up somewhere else so make sure you grab your pictures, music, contacts that aren't already backed up in an email address, etc.

I did perform a factory reset after the update!
I have nothing on the phone, except few apps, which I quickly reinstalled.
The emails and contacts are on hotmail so, it wasn't a concern they get reloaded from the exchange contacts sync. music was on my external sd card.
the problem is that if I disable email, battery is fine...but, c'mon...then what's the point of a smartphone! and if I disable background check, it's also fine, but again, what's the point of a smartphone!
I am really concerned now... with this battery life is unusable.
We have two captivates in our house, mine and my wife's. For mine, I did a complete one-click flash back to 2.2 froyo and then immediately upgraded to KK4 through Kies. Overall, my battery got much better and gave me a good 4-8 hours more battery life than what I was getting. When I go to bed I'll still have 30% remaining.
Now the bad news: My wife's went the opposite. On Froyo she had better battery life than I did and she updated without flashing her phone. On GB her battery was dying in almost 4 hours, 6 hours at best. It was crazy. On Friday I took the phone, backed it up and performed a Factory Reset. For two days this gave her better battery life than 4 hours but still horrible. Maybe 8 hours total.
What I noticed:
Over the weekend I paid close attention to her phone. I noticed the 3G symbol would be displayed on the screen while she was also connected to wifi here at home. Then I noticed that her email app (not the gmail app) was the #1 use of battery, even over the display. Clearly something was wrong. Then I noticed if I opened the email app, it would result in a connection error. However, if I opened a browser or the marketplace everything worked normal.
My thought process is: the Email app is constantly trying to connect to its server and since it's unsuccessful it continues to retry non-stop draining the battery.
How I might have Fixed it:
I took her phone and put it into Airplane Mode.
Waited a couple minutes and turned on WiFi only. (Phone was still in airplane mode)
Waited a minute and then turned WiFi off.
Took phone off Airplane mode. When everything came on, the WiFi was still off since I manually turned it off while in Airplane mode.
Rebooted the phone, WiFi is still off.
Turned on WiFi after everything finished running from boot up.
Noticed that now the 3G symbol was gone when WiFi connected.
Today she unplugged her phone at 5am this morning. As of 4pm her battery has only dropped 25% (showing 75% remaining). I checked the battery usage and the Email app is back down around number 6 or 7 on the list. Not sure if that's what fixed it but the battery is a HECK of a lot better than it was before. If someone else sees these similar symptoms give it a shot and hopefully it will help.
I was having the same issue on my phone after upgrading to GB. The 3g would stay on (displayed) while I was connected to Wi-Fi. It seemed to be draining my battery. It is better after doing a cache wipe. Next, I'll be swapping modems and kernels until I find a better combo. Currently, KK4 with corn 7.06 (sio & conservative)

Interesting, I don't have wifi at home, but I also noticed at work (where I have wifi) that 3G and wifi icons were both on.
I am not sure I can reflash the phone, and I could try to reset the phone again.
I will try your "procedure" and see what happens.
1 more thing: as I said in my prev post, I use hotmail with both SSL checks, as exchange server.
additionally the other account, which now is disable (my work account), is a zimbra 7 server with again both ssl checks, and configured as exchange.
the same configuration was working on froyo.
my system is not rooted and nor modified. out of the box install.
Problem identified
I identified that the problem is the hotmail account.
I factory reset the phone again and cache wipe, then I did not install any app, apart from those which auto-update themselves.
I configured my zimbra 7 work email account (exchange activesync): waited few hours. Normal battery consumption.
Reset the phone again, then this time I setup only hotmail: battery drain.
solution:
now I am using stock email app for work account and downloaded hotmail app (seven+microsoft) which still allows me to sync contacts and calendar. It's suboptimal (i'd like to have all in 1 place), but battery consumption seems back to normal.
problem present again
Sorry, but after few days I realized the problem is still there...also using only zimbra (activesync exchange).
no solution yet. hotmail using its app seems fine, but no way to use stock email. after a while it starts again consuming > 25%
Correct me if I'm wrong...
So yeah correct me if I'm wrong, but I read somewhere that your Data connection and WIFI drain the battery quite a bit. I think I remember using something with a 2.2 ROM once, where if my screen was off, it basically shut off everything except the ability to receive calls and texts. I'm not really sure because that was months ago, but if this rings a bell to anyone, I wouldn't mind knowing too!!1!
Original poster here... After doing another factory reset, I only installed a few apps a day over the course of a week, waiting for the battery issue to reappear. Through this long process, I identified the Kayak and Facebook apps as the battery hogs. When I had everything else reinstalled except for these, I had the same or better battery power compared to Froyo. I contacted Kayak who said they were aware of the issue and just put out a fix. I think the problem was, an update for Kayak came out around the same time that I performed my upgrade (or the battery issue for Kayak was specific to Gingerbread) so it only appeared after my upgrade. Anyway, to be working better now.
Overall, I like the stock Gingerbread upgrade, especially the fact that Swype works a lot better after the upgrade.
Email battery drain
Hi all - I am beginning a search for some solutions. I just upgraded Cappy to stock GB yesterday. Did Factory Reset before and after which eliminated the Tethering Manager issue.
Battery life at home yesterday was AWESOME. I believe this is in part because the new GB defaults to a "never sleep" policy on Wifi. It literally went from 100% to 92% in 3/4 of a day, with Wifi on all the time.
Now its Monday and I'm in the office (NO WIFI HERE) and now all of a sudden "EMAIL" is the biggest user of battery. It's been draining almost 10% per HOUR this morning. I use Hotmail as my primary email and I have it set up through the ActiveSync server on the stock GB email app (not Hotmail-specific app).
What is going on? I have the Sync set to "Push" everything, which is the way it was on Froyo and it never ate battery like that. Is it something different in GB or do you think it is something to do with this "Wifi always on" policy that somehow the stock email app is always trying to connect to the MS Exchange Server through wifi but can't? (I'd think that when wifi is out of range that it would just default to 3G "pushing" which is what it did before, and again no bad battery drain before under Froyo).
Thoughts?

Cross fingers I might have solved this. Appears that having one's Hotmail and/or GMail CALENDARS synced up may cause the problem. It appeared that both of those Calendars were basically constantly re-syncing rather than waiting for a push like the email does.
I unchecked those sync boxes for both calendars and it now seems that battery drain is slower. I'll keep watching this afternoon.
Hopefully this post is helpful if others might be experiencing the same thing. I'm hoping that it is NOT the "never sleep" Wifi because from what I've read, that is actually a battery-saver when at home in constant range of Wifi. Perhaps that is why I didn't notice this Calendar-induced drain overnight because the juice was sipping at a much slower rate even if it was constantly syncing. Once I got out onto the 3G network this morning then the juice started getting gulped......

I had the same problem after the GB upgrade for my AT&T Samsung Galaxy Captivate phone. After I read this forum, I figure the Outlook email setup would be the problem. I did the following changes and corrected the problem completely:
1. go to "settings"
2. go to "account and sync"
3. click on the Outlook email account under the "manage accounts" section
4. click on "Account settings" under "General settings" section
5. click "sync schedule"
6. change "peak schedule" to "15 minutes"
7. change "off-peak schedule" to "15 minutes"
8. click "save"
9. Done.
"Push" setting in "sync schedule" selection is the culprit causes the battery drain problem.
Good luck

[Q] My phone keeps dying!

In the last week or so I have picked up my phone three times and it has been dead.
The power button doesn't turn it on again.
I have to take the battery out and then restart it.
I'm running a rooted 2.35 JVT.
I have nothing untoward running ...
Settings
Sense analogue clock
DRM content
Software update
SnsService
Google Play Store
Samsung keypad
Apart from Angry Birds, there's almost nothing else, and nothing new for months except Bad Piggies.

Could it be a dead battery?
otherwise, tried to wipe and (re)flash a rom?
The battery is fine, and the ROM has been there for well over a year with no problems.

There are a number of standard steps to run through to find the root cause of battery problems, assuming the drain is caused by the OS or apps and not actually due to a physically failing battery.
I have been tracking a few battery issues myself recently and this is what I have learned from doing some reading on XDA:
There are two free apps on the app market that are typically used to diagnose battery problems:
Better Battery Stats
CPU Spy
I would recommend installing both apps. The third place to look is in the battery details in the system settings...sorry I can't remember what they look like on Gingerbread because upgraded to Jelly Bean a couple months ago, though I do remember there was less information in the stock battery info on Gingerbread.
IF you are not, indeed dealing with a physically dead battery, then the root of your battery drain is most likely caused by a background process or app that is keeping the processor in a partially active state even though the screen is turned off and one would assume the phone should not be using any power.
Android OS will automatically change the running speed of the processor in the phone based on the demand of the system. If only a few background tasks are running and updating information the speed might be 200 or 400 Mhz. If the system is running full out servicing a graphic intensive game the processor will likely be running at the full 1000 MHz speed. The speed of the processor will directly effect the battery drain.
The expectation is that when we turn the display off (not power down, just put the phone to sleep) the processor should need fewer resources and slow down, tending towards a state known as "Deep Sleep". At this point the processor us using very minimal amounts of power. Any app or process that is active in the background will prevent the processor from getting to Deep Sleep. The CPU spy app will allow you to check how much time the phone runs at various speeds. Once you install it and run it, then reset the timers in the menu and turn your screen off for about 10 or 15 minutes. Then 'refresh' the timers. Normally, you should see most of the time accumulated in Deep Sleep. There are standard background tasks such as syncing with the cell tower, updating time, mail, checking alarms etc. That will engage the processor momentarily but they should be relatively short compared to the deep sleep time. In my case, an errand process was keeping my phone at 100Mhz constantly preventing deep sleep.
Once you know that something is keeping the phone awake in the background, you can use Better Battery Stats to narrow down which process or app it is the cause. This app allows you to track the individual processes that are consuming the most time and preventing 'wakelocks'. Wakelocks are essentially an app preventing the sleep state and are very well explained in this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827676
The battery info in the system settings can also be used to give clues though again, I can't remember how much detail was included in Gingerbread..
If your problem only started happening recently, then it could be a new app that you installed recently, a feature or setting you changed recently or possibly a recent update to an app that was already installed. Try to think back at any recent events that could have triggered a change in the system.
Common problem apps I have read about are:
- Facebook - seems to be bad at using lots of background processor time. (Don't run this app but reading several posts shows its a processor hog)
- Google Apps that sync - Gmail, Chrome (syncs browser history, tabs etc.), Google location stats.
The wakelocks link goes into a great deal of detail and is hugely valuable in nailing your issue down.
Good Luck, let use know via a post if you find the root cause...
Sorry, maybe I wasn't clear about it being 'dead'.
The battery is 100% or thereabouts, no problems ever with the battery.
The phone looked as though it was turned off, but wouldn't turn on again with the power button.
I have to take the battery out and put it back again, then it starts on the button.
I've cleaned the contacts, and it still happened.
User error.

To me, it sounds more like a rogue process messing up power managing or response, but it's hard to tell what it could actually be.
For instance, you might come a cross a game that leaves your phone locked in max cpu frequency, draining the battery without explanation.
If it was me, I'd re-flash the rom from Odin, perhaps with an sd card wipe too.

T-mob Galaxy S6 5.1.1 Updated -> Significant power draw when WiFi enabled

For some reason after the 5.1.1 update on my T-mobile Galaxy S6 it was running hot and looking at the power consumption it was draining the battery quickly. It drained about 15% of the battery in less than an hour w/ nothing running in the background, and the battery usage is displaying 1% for everything for some reason. The one on top is com.tmobile.pr.adapt.
I wasn't sure if T-mobile pulled something stupid like making one of their apps that communicates to their network, but only over their data (i.e. not over wifi - like they do with showing your account information.) So, I turned off the WiFi to let it run off of LTE for a while. It cooled down and power consumption went back to normal (for being on LTE.) I let it sit for a couple hours that way, then switched back to WiFi and within a few minutes it was heated back up and power draining fast for some reason. There's no indication of things being downloaded but it's drawing way too much power.
Note I've rebooted it 3 times w/ same type of power activity.
Any thoughts, and anyone know how to role back to 5.0?
If you took the ota or used Odin to update you can't downgrade. I told everyone first thing this morning a downgrade won't be possible. Have you done a factory reset since updating?
I did a factory reset when I updated and battery life has been good with no strange issues.

Haven't tried a factory reset yet. I figured I couldn't downgrade as that's typical. I left it overnight w/ WiFi enabled and it drained downfrom 100% to 60% within the first 2hrs and then started draining slower to about 36% over then next 10hrs.
I topped it off w/ WiFi turned on and it felt like it was running hot. Left the house to run some errands for an hour and it only dropped to 96% (WiFi turned on but not connected.)
I've just got back from that, I'm going to let it sit for an hour w/ WiFi on but will leave it sit and see what happens. Personally I don't want to do a Factory Reset but if I'm still having the issue that's where I'll go. I had a similiar issue for a while on my S4 but it went away after a couple weeks.
EDIT: Ok, almost an hour later and it's only dropped about 3% while the WiFi was enabled and connected. I guess whatever was causing that has settled down. Thankfully no Factory Reset was required.
It is because of a stupid bug on WiFi calling (the mobile antenna does not turn off and it drains the battery). If you want to use wifi, just disable wifi calling, and you should be ok
I'm having a similar experience as TAZ427. Just updated my T-Mobile GS6 edge to 5.1.1 with OTA. I immediately noticed the phone was somewhat warmer. Battery monitor reveals that com.tmobile.pr.adapt is now #1 on the list. I tried killing that process several times but keeps coming back.
I also notice that despite being connected to my home WiFi, the "4GLTE" icon comes on and off constantly (1 second on, 3 seconds off, repeat...). Before the update, 4GLTE rarely came on while on WiFi. So probably the increased battery drain and heat are due to radio usage, not necessarily extra CPU utilization.
Not sure what com.tmobile.pr.adapt is for, or if it can be disabled. Would love to hear any guidance on that. As a side note, I had TMO grant me a SIM unlock -- I'm actually on Straight Talk (AT&T MVNO). So this service is running despite my phone not actually using the T-Mobile network.
I'm going to continue observing for the next couple of days before doing a factory reset. Really hoping to avoid that...

I'm noticing the exact same thing as far as the 4G LTE icon + WiFi and it's pissing me the f*** off. I've Factory Reset and everything after 5.1.1 update. I'm on MetroPCS with a TMO phone.

You guys are finally confirming what I noticed since first time I upgraded. Data turns on automatically and that only happens when wifi is on. Sucks.

I'm noticing the exact same thing as far as the 4G LTE icon + WiFi and it's pissing me the f*** off. I've Factory Reset and everything after 5.1.1 update. I'm on MetroPCS with a TMO phone.

I think I found a semifix, someone else will have to investigate because I have no idea what I actually did or if it's a longterm fix...
Go to Data Usage in Settings, find com.tmobile.pr.adapt or whatever it is, turn OFF Background Data. Go to Application Manager, find com.tmobile.pr.adapt and Force Close, Clear Data. I wasn't able to disable it but it seems the Background Data being turned off fixed it.

I am having the same issue and my phone is not usable now since the battery is awful. My s6 is temporary unlocked for a month since I am out of the states. I am afraid this is happening for unlocked s6's only. The trick of restricting background data for the "com.mobile.pr.adapt" seems to be working for now.

My S6 is not unlocked, it's a T-Mobile variant right out of the box activated on MetroPCS. If I had to venture a guess it would be that this is only happening to phones not on T-Mobile, not necessarily just unlocked. I'm assuming that com.tmobile.pr.adapt is some kind of phonehome or data reporter for T-Mobile but since we're not on T-Mobile it keeps bouncing back and getting stuck in some stupid loop.
I have the same problem with my unlocked t-mobile device (running on att). I wouldn't be so pissed if the update at least fixed the memory drain, but noooooope. Now I'm stuck with a 450mb phone that crashes and has bad battery (last two are new).
I did that small hotfix, and will check back.
Has everyone cleared the cache partition? Since the update, is the download booster automatically set to on?

The download booster is set to off after the 5.1.1 update
Happy to report that for me, this "com.tmobile.pr.adapt" issue has effectively gone away. Things started getting better after I cleared the cache and data for this process. I also restricted its background data as was suggested by others. Not sure which of those actions did the trick. Just theorizing, but another possibility is that T-Mobile was simply collecting post-update metrics from their phones for QA purposes, and that this was all just a short term annoyance. Anyone still seeing battery drain and heat higher than normal due to this process?
Anyway, "com.tmobile.pr.adapt" is no longer registering on my battery usage menu, or on CPU utilization list when I run OS Monitor. The phone is performing well overall (no worse than before the 5.1.1 update, anyway).
Excellent battery life for me. I had over 17 hours in total & 3+ hours on screen time. Only problem is i cant seem to install downloaded apps manually
Thanks

After the 5.1.1 update this morning my S6 went from a 100% charge to 10% in about 2.5 hours which was disheartening. Tried a factory reset which didn't help. Even charging from a USB port didn't stop it from draining the battery (just drained slower)! Called TING and they had no idea. But this seems to be working for me too. Thanks!!! I'll email TING to let them know about the fix, may help with a future update?

I think it has more to do with T-Mobile pushing a fix or an update, because whatever they did to 5.1.1 on their end royally screwed anyone using their branded S6 on another carrier. I don't know the proper channels to make T-Mobile aware of this.
I have the same annoying problem on my 920T. I bought it from t-mo, unlocked it and am using it in Italy. As soon as I got the 5.1.1 update, com.tmobile.pr.adapt started killing my battery. I just enabled the "restrict background data" and will let you know how it goes...

Spontaneous Shutdowns

Hey all, I've been having a bit of issues with the Z1 that happened a few months ago.
I just want to clarify what exactly is going on with the device, I've looked into other threads with similar situations but I just want to make sure it comes to the same conclusion.
So the Z1 shuts off near instantly at random intervals being at 80% or 60%.
The thing I never see addressed though is that in deep sleep, my Z1 can last a whole week without issues, the most activity it sees is playing music and nothing more. On airplane mode and everything.
So I just find it strange that if it's dormant, the battery is 100% fine with a very long life, yet upon use for about maybe an hour, whether it's light web browsing or gaming, it randomly goes straight to 0% and dies instantly. When I set it to charge it says it's charged to 60% as if it still has battery. This kind of activity doesn't seem like it's a hardware related issue, or at least it doesn't seem to be related to the battery capacity.
So I figured that maybe it's software related somehow, yet the same issues arise, I've tried stock kitkat and lollipop, AOSP kitkat, lollipop and nougat, and they all have the same issues. One thing I noticed though is that ever since this issue started, I noticed that I can't wipe my data partition anymore.
It mentions being unable to wipe the partition due to encryption or something, even though I've never set up encryption before and for years I've been able to wipe data just fine until a few months ago. Maybe it's related? Do I have some kind of virus?
Just want to clear up any misconceptions before I conclude that I'll need to buy a new battery.
Try command in fastboot : fastboot format data, this may help you
Same here... I was under the impression it more likely happens on camara usage. Some moments later.
Looks like this here:
- Battery is eg 69%
- suddely it says "Shutdown"
- I reboot and it says 0% and shuts down again
- Needs to load a few minutes, then has like 70% after boot.

Battery drain after Android 9 update

My phone got the update to Android 9 a little over a week ago, and since then it has been losing battery like crazy. For example, last night I left it unplugged as a test, and it lost 30-40% of battery within 6 hours (while I was sleeping). Before the update, a fully charged battery was able to last for two days, now it doesn't even manage one. The phone is often noticeably warm.
I restricted all "consuming apps" some days ago, that did not make any difference. I also tried 3rd-party apps to analyze the battery consumption, but did not find any way to figure out what consumes all the battery in the background / while the screen is off.
Using Google I found other people with the same problem, but I did not find a solution. What can I do?
I had a same kind of problem but it started a few days after a manual update flash. I had been experimenting with some root stuff (mostly magisk though so they should go away by uninstalling the modules) but could also not figure out the reason for the drain.
I also tried to reflash only system and vendor partitions, but ended with a bootloop, so I had to flash the whole firmware again. No problems after that.
I would try a factory reset if I were you.
You can also try GSam battery monitor (if you already haven't) to figure out what's happening with your phone while the screen is off and it should be sleeping.
I upgrade the XPZ yesterday to 4.41 Pie. Charge the mobile after upgrade to 100%.
The current situation looks like:
18hour active, 30 Min Display, a few calls... Whatsall, newsletter, Mail..... are running in the Background, LTE, EDGE and WiFi are always on, BT has a connection to my watch...
88% are still in the Accu. (Save mobil datatransfer is aktiv; additional the option is enabled to reduce power consumption for apps in background)
