I would like to use the GPS on my phone to map my position on a static map or a jpeg. I don't want to use the web at all, I want to store my maps in static images and pull up the appropriate map and be able to find my position on that map
Does anyone know if this is possible and how it would be done?
Thanks.
TW,
BeeLineGPS
I realize you want to be able to import maps, something you cannot do with BeeLineGPS (http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/BeeLineGPS), but I'd still strongly recommend the program. It does not do anything over the Internet but it does do just about everything one could do with GPS data. As far as getting some kind of reference of where things are on a blank map, you can import waypoints or mark them on your phone and you can export the movement you've tracked into KML (Google Earth).
From their website: "BeeLineGPS is a high performance Pocket PC cache navigation and management software tool. Import GPX files and manage thousands of waypoints with the advanced Waypoint Manger. View, manage and hunt geocaches with ease and confidence while having fun, a perfect paperless solution. BeeLineGPS also includes active waypoint technology where a waypoint can trigger a warning window for speed traps, safety cameras or play a sound byte while on a guided tour. Other features include waypoint averaging, altitude profiling and a comprehensive trip computer. BeeLineGPS is the ultimate GPS tool for your geocaching and outdoor needs. BeeLineGPS waypoint database can support thousands of waypoints with over 120 icons to depict specific locations."
It's 30 day shareware that eventually turns into nagware but you may find it's worth the $30. Here's the cab: http://www.visualgps.net/BeeLineGPS/BeeLineGPSInstall.CAB
I have not used this at all, haven't even installed it yet, but you might want to look at MyMotion
Very interesting, thanks guys.
I think MyMotion is the closest I've seen yet. I don't really care about tracking where I've been - does anyone know of any open source similar to MyMotion?

I think you should take a look at GPStuner. It does a lot of things
- Maps can be downloaded from the phone, or from a computer and stored on memory card. (i currently have 50 JPG covering 200 sq km)
- It records your track, gives information about your current speed, altitude, average speed...
- You set up points aywhere on the map and it will lead you to them, or search nearby points. I use it for things that do not come on Tomtom, like bus stops, libraries or free WiFi hotspots
- You can save your track and open it on Google Earth
Another similar software is tracky, but I like GPSTuner more
chinomoreno, it's not polite to hi-jack a thread... start another with your question.
You can also use LEM's TrackMe, using it off-line it will store your data on your device until you decide to upload it (by example when connected with Wifi or ActiveSync). It also stores .kml files you can use in Google Earth.
We've kind of moved off topic to tracking software as opposed to being able to find a point on a static map or image... is it really that difficult to do???
TW,
Desktop app exportable to kaiser
I use Memorymap on my desktop and it can be fully exported to pda. Incorporates standard maps and arial photographic images which you can flip between:

PathAway, but it's way more than what you're asking for. You can create a map, calibrate it, then upload it. You can do large maps, small maps, etc.. And you can pull in topo or sat maps in on the fly over the data connection too if you don't happen to have a map already made.
Yet Another GPS Tracker? - yes, but:
- this is a nice one - thanks to excellent design by expo7! And you can set your custom background and button images;
- can select GPS run interval: from "always on" to "run every 10 min" - this is useful if you want to reduce battery power usage;
- has usual cycle computer display: time, distance, speed (current, average, max) plus a graph of your track.
The tool logs GPS data into a binary file (so a lot of data can be stored in a compact form), which can be loaded back for viewing, or saved into .kml / .gpx file to view in e.g. GoogleEarth. With the latest version of GoogleMaps, you can view KML files on your phone. Just click on a kml file in file explorer. Note there is a bug in the latest GoogleMaps installation, so KML files does not work - read the manual how to fix this.
The files are now stored at Google Code web site, please download the latest version from here: http://code.google.com/p/gccv2/downloads/list
What you need to download (go for the latest version!) :
- GpsCycleComputer_X.XX.cab - the application itself. To install, copy CAB into your phone, and click on it from your phone File Explorer. The manual (file called Readme.htm) is installed on your phone, in the same folder as the application. E.g. if you install into "Internal Storage" on English Windows, the path to the application will be \Internal Storage\Program Files\GpsCycleComputer.
- GpsCycleComputerSource_X.XX.zip - A complete source code in C#, uses CF .NET 2.0. Feel free to change anything you like!

Hi,
the tracker works great! buuuuuut I have a problem, I can't import the .kml file into google earth. Although I open it (with a text editor) and the coordinates seem correct, when I import it, google earth sets all the coordinates in the north pole ¿?¿?
Very Nice
Hello,
it really looks good And i like the "simple" stuff. Exactly the needed functionality. The only thinmg I miss is the possibility to save the files as GPX.
Oh and it would be perfect if it is possible to disable all button's but the power button when the screen is of.
Thanks for the tool. I will test it in Australia next month.
And I will have a look in the sources

I cannot see the truck in google earth ... why?
Strange that you do not see anything in Google Earth. I just tested again, all OK. I use Windows version: "Google Earth 4.3.7284.3916 (beta) Build Date Jul 8 2008"
The KML file is quite simple - I looked an existing KML sample supplied with Google Earth (called, of course, "KML Samples"), found the simplest one with "path" and simply put the new coordinates there.
Try to put a single point in the coordinates and see if it works for you?
The only bit this I can think of is the "Z" coordinate, which is "optional" according to Google manual. But maybe in your version you need that "Z" as well (this will be the 3rd number after lat/long, - put 0 there, note it is separated by comma.
Also I removed entry called "<LookAt>" - but seems my version can set the eye position automatically...
Re the buttons: I have not explore all the Diamond settings in details: on mine, by default, all the buttons are locked as I click software button "BkLight Off". Then I switch it back with hardware "power" button. Do you have the same?
BTW: here is the Google sample I used as a template - try if this works (and after removing which field it does not!). BTW, according to Google help, it might be possible to use GoogleMaps for viewing KML file (but I was not able to make this work on Diamond) - anyone tried?

Hi,
The problem is that you use the comma character to separate the decimal part, whereas kml files use the dot
this is:
google: -112.0814237830345,36.10677870477137
you: -112,0814237830345,36,10677870477137
I replaced the commas for dots and now google shows the route correctly
BTW, the Z coordinate is not needed, as you guessed.
Please fix this, I love this software!!!
Thank You, your tools sounds great !! It runs on my Diamond, but i Am inhouse at the moment, so no gps signal, but it works so far. can you explain the "GPS sample validity" a little more, please ? i donßt understand your readme. And "GPS activity", does it mean that the tool saves point in this time frame or that GPS is activated after this time, send the position, goes off and wait for some minutes ? And when it goes on, how long do it try to receive a signal ? For example, if i go in a house, does it start the gps and try to receive for hours or does it switch the gps off after some time ?
I hope you keep developing, very good start for the concept. Is there a chance to improve the design ? Maybe in Manila style ? Like the small "stopwatch 1.01" tool, simple, but great design, improves it a lot !!

Did you do any battery tests ? How long do the diamond work for tracking ?

Would love to make a bit nicer design, but have not learn yet how to do skins ... Anyone would like to try? - the source code it attached
Regarding start/stop : if you select an option "GPS activity" "run every xx sec", then:
1) as soon as you get a valid sample (to decide that it is valid - the second option is used "GPS sample valid xx sec") - GPS is switched OFF and a timer started for xx sec.
2) as timer expires, it starts GPS
3) GPS starts searching and as soon it get a valid sample (see 1)...
So, it means that you need to add "search time" to "timer time" - that will be your distance between samples. Clearly, the longer the timer time, it will takes longer for GPS to get a valid sample again.
The battery usage is printed at start/stop - I specially added this to estimate usage. I did not have much chance to test, but with "GPS always on" and "3 sec valid time" (as you load the file back, it shows as "gps options 0/3 sec" after file name) - I think it shall run for
about 3 hours.
BTW, I noticed the application hangs sometimes when it frequently start/stop GPS (I tried 5 sec / 5 sec), AND you have a few other applications running (blame Microsoft ... it was not me). I guess the GPS start/stop is a bit stressful for the system, so this could explain. I am looking into this. At default mode (0/3 sec) all seems works fine. Again - look at source code, maybe you have some suggestions?

Yes, search for TrackMe here on XDA, and for the serverfiles.
The serverfiles have a build-in google maps API, sure you can work it out.

I searched many, many time for a tool like this!
I will try it, today evening....
Great Job
great app - a suggestion
This is a fantastic app...I love the simplicity and the functionality.
I'm trying to find something that is as close to Nokia's sports tracker as possible for WM6.1 and this is near as perfect.
One suggestion for added functionality...
is it possible to add markers to show:
fastest point
slowest point
highest point
lowest point
These are then visible on the .kml file in google earth/maps.
Keep up the good work!
cheers, cojo
I will be posting the latest version into the first post, so please check it for updates. The latest update is for KML output fix, also I added GPX output day before.
Re battery usage - I noticed that as you switch GPS on, the battery reduces quickly (which looks ok, as battery current increases, so voltage drops), but then it drains the battery not as fast. I.e. 20 min run might not be an indication how long it will last.
Hy Andy,
the 1) part makes me a little bit worried. Can you change that to a number of sattelites used or a certain hdop to decide that a signal is valid instead of taking a "GPS sample valid xx sec"
I really like your tool It would be nice to have a option for the folder where the logs should be stored.

I think I was not very clear about "valid xx sec" - Of course, first of all I check that the position/velocity/heigth is "valid" - this information is provided by the GPS. I.e. this means that you have proper GPS lock first. Also each gps sample has time stamp, so I additionally check that the sample is fresh enough. This seems useful when you switch "off" GPS, then switch it "on" - and it could return "old" sample at start.
Regarding the location of the stored files - I thought it is quite easy to remember that these are stored with the application (so you do not need to search for them...). If you would like to change the folder, the easiest would be to copy the tool in any place you like! I just wanted to keep the number of buttons (and options) to very minimum ...
Folks,
I'm currently vacationing in Hawaii (Aloha!) and would like to find an easy to use tool that will allow my family and friends to track me. I'd like to be able to use my Tilt's GPS to track where I've been, upload pictures at locations I've been, and maybe add a bit of commentary for the folks back home.
I've tried wordpress blogging from Opera, but it is really, really cumbersome to upload pictures because the upload utility doesn't display thumbnails--only file names.
Is there another utility that you'd recommend?
Rutilate
Two simple steps...
Step 1: Use the GPS photo option in the phone to take a pic.
Step2: upload the pic to http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/ and see where you have been in google earth or google maps...
Sometimes the GPS photo takes forever to get a lock by itself so i use GPSTest to get a GPS lock and then switch to the camera.
You can also try Ozi Explorer , this app allows you to show your GPS position in real time on the map (Its called moving map mode, and the map can be a PNG image).
Have fun on your vacation!

Just make sure you use its "Turn Off Screen" mode if possible, otherwise Windows Mobile eventually goes to a deeper sleep and it stops tracking. Not a problem when it's plugged into the charger typically, and when I'm traveling on the road I always just keep the phone plugged in.
You can also use Navizon look in my signature
So I recently got very interested in Windows Phone 7 (mango) and I had been thinking about starting to create my own apps for a while. The result is the idea for an app that is as follows:
Name: Crumbs
Possible abbreviation: to send somebody a "crumb"
In short: An app that capable of: writing/creating, organising, sharing and following instructions, AKA crumbs.
What I want to achieve with this is a new option into social networking, but this time it's also very useful and not just fun to show off. What could these crumbs be? Well, I've thought of some categories already:
Routinely task:
like the stuff you do every morning, shouldn't forget, etc.
Work/study task:
some sort of study schedule, with certain points you should handle to complete the whole task.
Preparation/cooking task:
doesn't need any explanation.
Scavenger hunt/adventure:
wouldn't it be great if you can give a list of instructions to someone with some reward at the end?
Travelling:
similar to your adventure, but could contain various flight data or a couple of options (so you don't "finish" an item, but finish 1 item in a dillema.
Other: always have some other category..
User defined: if a user wants to make his/her own category. So these are the categories, but as you've already seen, each category has different types of commands/operations one has to perform to complete the whole task. So when writing a new one, you could filter the entry-options by the ones most important for that category and give the users a seperate option to add another operation than the ones listed by default. Some possible operations and their integration ideas are as stated below:
Action: very straightforward, do something and when executing the crumb you simply check the box when done. Maybe some option with a timer that alerts you that you should be done with the operation soon (for example: cooking).
Navigate: go to a specific location and then you check the operation. Possible GPS integration/maps?
Input: give certain input to go on. For example useful when creating an adventure (go there, look for the church and read what's on it) or something else that should need a password or any other input.
Alert: to alert yourself/the executor OR (and this is important) some other user that you've arrived at a certain operation in your crumb.
Yeah, you read it right, another user. Because one other important aspect of almost every app nowadays is SHARING. So ofcourse, there will have to be the option to share crumbs. People will be able to manage their crumbs on a phone ofcourse, but if there's a lot, wouldn't it be easy to have them stored online too? A place where you can rapidly type, organise and share your crumbs. So there should be a format to save them in (.crumb looks fantastic ). So, you simply send someone the crumb using a public link you create for your privately stored crumb. But what about something called instructors/friends? Wouldn't it be awesome if you can allow certain people to GIVE you crumbs straightaway, so you'll get alerted and know you have to do something (OK, "your mom" wouldn't be awesome, but useful nonetheless). To make things easier for this, the users will have to be able to manage these friends/instructors too and have their own cookie jar/cake box to receive their crumbs directly in (on the website and in the app). I sense some Facebook/social integration, don't you?
Then there's this weird habit of people: they've got calendars and tasks on them. Wouldn't it be great if the crumbs are linked to calendar and/or outlook-task items?
Sooo... This is my (already quite complex) idea. To conclude things once again: the outlook task system isn't capable of managing real tasks. You can give certain progress percentages, but that's just something that could be managed by this app, since it's much more in depth.
Problem is, I'm not that good at developing (yet)! So if any developer out there is willing to take this thing on with me (I just feel this could turn out great), please let me know. Meanwhile, I'll keep dreaming on and I'm a quick learner, so I hope to show a mockup of some sorts soon . I've already thought out some sort of menu structure/frame everything should be hung up in and that's what I'll be working on the time to come.
And keep in mind:
This idea is NOT for sharing by anyone but me right now. That it may be very clear that this idea is not for your own use!
Since I have invested quite some effort searching for the best reader to use for scientific documents, I thought I would create this thread to tell other people what I found; maybe it will save someone some work:
-----
In mathematics, physics, parts of computer science and other scientific disciplines we use a typesetting system called TeX to make our documents. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeX It is a pretty powerful system that ensure beautiful typesetting, page layouts, logical structure, bibliographies etc. almost automatically. In addition, it is the only real way to make mathematical formulae, so in many subjects there is no alternative anyway.
-----
Using the NST with documents coming from this system is tricky: The re-flowing features of all PDF readers I know of will break these complex documents. Also, they destroy the aesthetics of the documents. So what we need is a reader that can display them in their original layout, but still in a usable way. The only workable solution I have found so far is "Mantano Reader" together with the "Smart Rotator" app.
In Mantano you can double tap on the text section of a TeX document and the reader will automatically fit this text section into the display. While all PDF readers can do this, it works much better here: If you now scroll up and down, you will stay "locked" horizontally, so you don't lose the column will scrolling.
Even when you go to the next page, the lock to the column remains. This even seems to work, when then column is not in the same place (e.g. because the PDF is a book, so it has different left and right margins on even and odd pages).
There is a feature to remove whitespace around the TeX document. Generally this works reasonably, although sometimes it bugs a little. I personally don't use it, as the double tap zoom already works well.
It supports the NST page nav buttons without any hacks.
The interface is quite ugly and disorganized; the file browser horrible. But you don't notice these things while actually reading, and I guess you can't have everything.
I combined this app with the "Smart Rotator" app from the market. This allows you to set screen orientations individually for all apps. I set Mantano to Landscape and all other apps to Portrait. In landscape mode the screen really is wide enough to read comfortably TeX documents on the NST, even without reflowing.

I'm always interested in this because B&N snarfed some unallocated keycodes to use for the four hard keys.
Are you saying that all four hard keys cause some sort of page up/page down?
It seems to me that if a software provider didn't know about the Nook then only the left two keys would do something.
Yes all four work as they should.
Thank you, it works fine
Imo, the only major drawback is when you use the NST buttons or you tap the screen, it goes to the following page (it would be better if it just scrolled down a little).
Ebookdroid (particularly with NoRefresh) and APV PDF Viewer (optimized for the nook) are also rather good
Yes I agree, that is a little annoying.
Also, it does not support multitouch.
