To upgrade or not to...Marshmallow - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It has been 6 months i reverted back to kitkat and rooted and was happy playing and tweaking my phone. But off late phone is acting very bad on battery part. Battery reduces in no time even after all updates/syncs/gps etc everything being off as always.
So though about trying marshmallow but have no idea about its good or bad.
So can you guys comment on marshmallows battery life, camera enhancement fix, overall ui experiences etc??
So accordingly I can make my mind to upgrade.

For battery, check wakelocks on your phone. I installed no wakelock xposed to disable any apps that causing wakelock. And my battery is really good in kitkat, rather than mm.. cheers

I am running SLiMM 1.9 and it is very very fast!
Battery life is good, getting about 4.5 to 5h of screen on time, camera is ok,no major difference, only if you use SLiMM I think it snaps photos quicker but it could be just a placebo effect.
Getting about 40k on AnTuTu which is pretty low but it could be just my device or a bug in AnTuTu.
Overall I would recommend to upgrade!

It is a custom ROM based on 23.5.0.575

If you're happy with current phone and nothing bugs you, leave it.
I'm staying on L because there's no single issue I have with it and I like the STAMINA mode. Sony won't bring the same STAMINA back, they just rebranded the low battery saver as that and Doze is halfassed compared to STAMINA. So basically there's 0 appeal for the upgrade. I don't care about version numbers, I prefer much more not having to hassle with the phone and rely on it.

The latest Slimm actually brought stamina mode back. I can get a good 2-3 days of average use with it off though.

No, it didn't. They only changed the name of Power Save mode to Stamina mode.

What's the best setup for optimal battery life?

I only really use my z1 for Spotify, LINE, reddit and Facebook. Currently the battery life isn't so great as it needs charged during the day..
What's the best rom/firmware etc to flash which will give me the best battery performance?
I've not been on xda for quite some time so I'm a bit out of the loop,I did some looking but couldn't find a definitive answer.
Cheers!
??
I'm on stock but rooted lollipop, with Stamina mode and Greenify helping each other out. Also I underclock down to 1GHz but I'm not quite sure if it helps.
On all my past devices running the stock firmware almost always makes the most out of your battery.

Sorry for late reply, didn't get notified.
I think that's normal pretty normal battery if you use Spotify+LINE+reddit+Facebook with 2 out of 4 signal o__o
Well the thing is that when you play music on spotify, your phone cannot sleep.
You should try to get a better signal/reception of wi-fi and cellular. I have read that these without good signal could cause battery drain, as you see, cell standby at 9%. Sorry I don't know how to improve those but :/ yeah..
Maybe try "Stamina Mode" if you didn't activate it (It should have a + logo next to the battery when activated)?
Lower your brightness if you can, that's the biggest drain!
At last, for a rom suggestion,I don't have because I'm stuck on stock roms ._. , maybe try some custom roms when you have free time

Yeah it's not too bad I guess, I just use it more than I realise. Already running mxrom, I've found stamina mode doesn't make much difference.
Thanks for the tips!

Best or ideal kernel settings for best battery life with good performance?

The title explains it all—I'm wondering what the best kernel settings are to achieve the best battery life without completely dropping performance. I've never tweaked the kernel on any phone I've owned before, so I have no idea what those settings might be. I currently get around 5-6 hours of SOT, which is great for heavy usage but with a battery those huge we should expect way more.
I'm currently playing around with majorly under clocking the CPU (Currently testing at 1.2 GHz) and have yet to notice a difference in performance. I'll update with battery improvements if any arise.

im on zzmove with profile 6, run only 2 core at 2.4Ghz and every thing seem good
phone run cool and great in game(framerate still good and more stable since no throttling at all, before that with stock, my phone get hot and lag if i play asphat for long) not sure about battery yet but seem good
Try computerfreak ROM, i'm getting 77 hrs on battery and 6 SOT!
Oops just now noticed I had replies.
I'm currently running Resurrection Remix and I seem to be getting better battery life than I was on stock, which is odd; however, I wish to get more. Update me on those kernel settings.
Also I noticed that when I'm at school the cellular signal drains my battery considerably. The signal there is poor, is there any way I can minimize the drainage?

That's a ridiculously easy thing to do, I can't believe I didn't think of this. However, its rather inconvenient. Any other ways? I heard back in 4.4.4 that there was a way to disable certain bands or something to consume less power when you have bad signal.

I'm on rr and honestly I'm not getting the best battery. Like 3.5 hour on screen time. It does still make it through the day though. I changed the kernel settings to conservative under cpu, which helped a lot from previously getting under 3.

Settings, configs, performance tuning, kernal tweaks, then in the app in the cpu tab, the cpu governor option. That's where I found it and I turned it down and I'm getting better battery.
That's odd. I get considerable better battery life on RR than I did on stock. I've hit 5.5 and even 6 hours of SOT with heavy to medium use (when I'm not at school at least).
Same here, but I noticed it lasts much longer with Greenify and Amplify installed with Xposed. I lose about 2-3% during standby mode during the night....whereas before I lost about 10-15% even while on RR.
Just got 7HR and 4 mins screen on time with in 2 days didnt use my phone at school only when i was at home so i guess 7hr's is good..
EDIT: i am on stock ROM

That sounds right about what stock should be getting for some users. It's good to reference stock with your personal use versus someone else.
1 hour of a playing a game with full brightness will use significantly more battery than an hour of book reading on night move although they both technically have the same screen on time.

I usually consistently got about 5 hours and 30 minutes of screen on time on stock with medium to heavy usage at school and at home.
On Resurrection Remix, I usually get 5 or sometimes 5 and a half or 6 hours, with heavy usage at home. On school days, I can only manage to get around 3, which I find incredibly odd. I chalk it up to the poor signal at my school draining my battery.

It definitely is decent, but with a battery this huge we should be getting way more. Especially since Moto and Verizon preached about 48hr battery life.

You can get 48 hrs on the Turbo. You can also get 5 hrs. Like I said before, it all depends on your personal usage. Perhaps they have a baseline test they do on every phone so there's no variable aside from battery.

battery drain on standby is high!

hi everyone, my droid turbo drains battery on stand by stated as "cell standby". this problem was on lollipop and after the update it is still almost same. it drains like 10-13% overnight. any solutions pleas?
Having the exact problem on lollipop, haven't upgraded yet cause I plan to unlock bootloader sometime. Even my Moto X 2014 used to give me more battery life, though it had a tiny 2300mAh battery. I was thinking maybe I had a bad battery but now I don't seem to be the only one having this trouble. Maybe you should try Greenify & Amplify. There are also some pretty good Battery Saving mods available on XDA, go give them a shot.
Unlock bootloader, root, install stock-based, debloated, tweaked ROM:
Computerfreek274_MM_1.0.4 Marshmallow 6.0.1 Stock rooted VOLte Debloated

@Computerfreak, thanks for such an excellently crafted ROM!
The battery performance is truly fantastic as is the audio quality.
FYI, I installed the stock ROM and thought that I had done something wrong when the battery drain was so high. @ChazzMatt suggested/recommended giving your version a go and I went with his suggestion. I am beyond glad that I did!
The battery drain went from me being able to watch it drop each minute to it not moving a single degree in over an hour. Six hours later and it's only dropped 7%-8%. (Wi-Fi was on for 5 hours and the music player was in use for 1 hour.) Nice!
The audio quality improvement was more than simply noticable in the car this afternoon (Mannheim Steamroller's "Christmas"); it was smooth and clear enough that I thought that it sounded like I had higher-end speakers/amp. Extra nice!
Your tweaks are much appreciated - much appreciated!
BTW, all of your apparently long-time fans kept mentioning Pon-3 and Xposed, so I'm off to explore.
Thanks, again for a wonderful job!

Hello Kabayan!
Loving it so far, great upgrade from the S7. That being said, the battery on my S7 is slightly better, probably due to the smaller display.
Running well on SoldierROM 2.1 + Xposed and Magisk.
Install Naptime + Greenify = Better battery life

From s7 to s9 is really a great upgrade, but I came from s5 and it's totally a big jump. Though, battery is almost the same with s5 (when I first got it). Camera is incredible, but when HDR is a little bit tricky, I am using the GCam port to use the HDR+ function and the photos definitely blows me away. One thing worth mentioning is the new stereo speakers with dolby atmos support! These are incredible, and now I've got to rewatch all the marvel movies so that to enjoy truly the experience with speakers. So far so good, but I don't look on rooting my phone atleast when samsung still supports this phone for software updates
@kyooo totally agree with you bro , me also im kinda craving to root this device but i think its better not to due to security patches and samsung experience update , im kinda bored on android stock i think samsung ui is improving

Yep that's what I exactly thought of. I hope though that Samsung would fix battery drain in the exynos models, it sucks hard. I would get around 4hrs of SOT with heavy usage at WQHD+ and around 6hrs of SOT with social media apps only in power saving mode with only speed limiter on. But I dont want to use the power saving feature unless Im going on a full day without charge.
I think samsung will release a patch on drain , some says it something to do with poor cpu governor , if its only a software issue i believe samsung will fix this on their next update btw i got 6-8 hours sot with aod turned off and fhd+ turned on ive also set location to battery saving not precise location ,

Yeep it's actually the governor, the person behind anandtech's website made a kernel which tuned down a little of the cpu power according to use and it turned out really well when it comes to battery life.
8 hrs is impossible to me, I only got 6hrs max with power saving mode on. Is that an s9+?
Hello, have you guys received the BRE5 update yet?

How is Pie battery life on the Note 8?

Are people noticing any improvement or worsening?
It's been a lot better for me
Battery life for me is ok, with the official installed for the last 4 days. I'm upto 6 hrs sot on my usage and intend to leave it on charge overnight to complete any optimisations that may have not been done.
The call screen number flashing bug is still there though, but no other issues for me as yet.
i dont know guys... its lottery? i went down from 7h SOT to 2h... i did full wipe ect... i heard a lot of people that said it its better for them with battery and a lot of people saying its even worse than oreo

I'm having about the same batt life as I had with Oreo, but I've upgraded to Pie 2 days ago, so I'm hoping it will get better in about a week when the OS settles down and I'm done with setting it up. I've always had the idea that after a major OS upgrade, it keeps doing a lot of things in the background, making it use more battery than expected. For iOS this is even verified by Apple, but I don't know about Android.
Im used pie for about 2 weeks now.
For me, battery usage for idle is better, im got better standby time than oreo, but once im start using it, it drop faster than oreo. Phone also feel little more hot than on oreo.
Im got battery leakage last 2 days and then i realised that putting video wallpaper on lockscreen eat the battery alive even screen is turn off.. Its just still played in background.
Im got constant 6 and half hour of SOT on pie and 7 hour SOT on oreo (from 100 to 20%) of my battery. I
Im not heavy user, just used chrome and facebook only. No games.
So far, phone is more responsive on pie but never been lack on oreo.
However, im monitor my battery charge capacity with Aida64, im got 3139 mAh on pie and 3220-3298 on oreo. Its seems its limit to 3139 only now for my phone.
By the way, im used Note8 with exynos processor.
Pretty much the same as on Oreo on my N950N running Pie.
Note 8 battery much better with pie...... Verizon
I was expecting the same like for years new update new battery drain. This is the best a battery has ever done. I use my phone alot I have stopped background data for the battery hungry apps. With device care. I set it to see a week at a time. I only done this with Facebook and messenger and chrome. Even before it's been great for me I hope that all of you get better battery life. I know it's hard to do things when you have tug battery charger.
Pie is a joke don't update you will thank me
oreo it's a lot better, but i use custom kernel on pie, "phantom kernel" and my battery life it's a lot better even better than oreo with stock kernel.
Not bad.
Some people here hating on pie, more power to you, but I've only had one minor bug with the sound "popping" in the "My Noise" app, turning off Wifi during use fixes it. Also, all the benefits such as Good Lock, Bixby Routines and dark mode more than make up for the one minor bug I have. FWIW I am on Sprint and Snapdragon model.
Curious. Considering updating soon. Need help manuals. OTA keeps saying "processing failed"
