Need to root for 3G/4G lock.. nonsense? - P8lite General

Dear Members!
I recently switched from Lumia 630 DS to this nice phone, P8 Lite.
Sadly, in 2016, there are phones with inability to maintain data+call over 2G.
So, when i make/receive calls, network gone cause phone falls back to 2G.
Sure, no problem, let's set it to 3G/4G... Wait! You can't...
It's a shame that you need to unlock bootloader, and root your phone,
just to hack settings.db to switch 3G/4G only..
Anyone here, can tell me what stores these options, and where?
I would like to modify original rom, to let choose 3G/4G,
To help others not to go through this long procedure to lock phone only 3G/4G.
Because if we can have a stock rom with ability to choose 3G/4G,
Users just can install that rom without need of BL unlock + root.
I achieved this using adb:
settings put system preferred_network_mode 12

I have tried Xposed, but it disables the theming, which is ugly.
And to be honest, dont want to have a framwork just to achieve a simple trick.
I know that this way we need root. But i meant a modified stock rom, which includes the option 3G/4G.
The settings app says that selected mode is 3G/4G but when I open selection it shows:
Automatic 4G/3G/2G
Automatic 3G/2G
3G Only
2G Only
Obviously none of them selected, because it's not in the list that i set.
I need to add somehow the Automatic 3G/4G to the list.
Then just need to flash modified stock rom, and root if you want, but not must.

there is a new dedicated version of xposed that work without disable theme engine
i posted the link here

with intelli 3g you could use 3g/4g only option

Thanks, i will try it. I used the Intelli3G with theme-disabled xposed, but I was so disappointed with themes, so immediately restored the nand backup
But the main goal is still to have Auto 3G/4G incorporated in stock rom. Maybe better to write to Huawei to include in stock?

The shame is that 2013 device Lumia 630 does the dual data+call mode over 2G. I think all WP do this, but new android devices still not.
So the 3G/4G lock is just a half-solution to the problem with (most of) android devices don't or don't want to support 2G voice+data. And the annoying is that, even if you are in good 3G coverage, it drops to 2G in seconds after call established. So no matter what is falls back to 2G. My engineer friend said its by design to keep 3G cells free. Shame. Maybe this will be solved if 2G cells shutdown
I am curious that it's a radio chip inability or just android design fail? Because i think the os disables data channel.
But don't know if hardware supports it or not. Here in Hungary, my network supports it from the very first time, i know from an engineer.
But the first (and only) phone saw that works this way is the Lumia.

Disable Global mode and CDMA

For just one post that a lot a stuff well anyways, one problem I see is that on the XT860 rom it doesn´t read the SIM ID but on the XT862 it does. Since in my stupidity something tells me that that maybe related to the fact that is not reading the sim properly, I guess I will go into that route to find out what´s happening.
Just a quick update for ya.
Just installed minimoto version of the XT860 into my XT862 and it worked, the only problem is that it says invalid sim, but interestingly I can receive and make calls, signal indicator works better also. Anyways, I will try to find out how to get the rom to detect the sim correctly later.

Re phrasing the question, is there a way to make an xt862 into an xt860, since they are technically the same phone, just with different radios. What I want is to maybe use the phone.apk from the xt860 (that is only gsm/utms) into the xt862, in that way the phone won´t be looking for CDMA settings.
Is that possible?

Hi guys, I already searched on google, on xda, on droidforums and I haven´t found a way to disable the Global mode and CDMA mode, because in my country we don´t use CDMA anymore just GSM (GSM with sim card).(since 1990 something, the whole country moved to GSM).
I want my Droid 3 to just have the option between 2G and 3G (that would be Edge and 3G here), the only option I need would be GSM/UMTS. the other 2 options are CDMA and Global and I want to get rid of them.
Also because for some reason in some areas if I am in 3G and I get a call, the call will drop after making some weird sounds and I will get no signal for some minutes, and I will have to manually go into airplane mode and then out to get a signal again.
So I think, since the phone has this global mode thing, I though what the hell, let´s just disable the global mode and cdma mode and that will fix it. I mean, I believe that the phone instead of falling back to gsm mode (from 3G in lower signal areas) it goes directly to global mode, or even CDMA.
For more info, my phone is a Droid 3 XT862, from Verizon, unlocked and brought overseas, using the latest minimoto rom (I wanted something light so minimoto looked good).
I already applied some build.prop fixes and they worked but the ultimate fix would be to disable global and cdma mode.
Is it possible?

I was wondering if this is possible too, I know there is a line in the build prop that sets gsm to default, but it seems that my droid 3 will change that setting once in a while.
I, too, would like a permanent fix for this.
I do not use Minimoto, but I do use the XT883 radio. I have zero idea how I did it, but my Stock rom (I use SS) does NOT have the network choice. I assume this is what you were aiming for. It only shows the GSM options (2g/3g/auto toggle, Operator select, and APNs menu) and nothing for CDMA. Effectively making my Stock rom GSM only like the XT860. SIM reads fine, calls/text/data all work, no invalid SIM reading anywhere.
I've attached a couple screenshots to showcase this (if it's what you want) and my modified build.prop (incase this is actually what caused it). I've no idea what I've done to the build.prop, I've gone through and randomly changed things in my adventure of doing GSM tweaks, and I mainly use Maverick so my main modifications (that I remember) are there. Use at your own risk, though I doubt it'll do any harm (remove the .txt from the end and make sure you have proper permissions). Remember to backup your originals.
Interestingly enough im having the opposite problem on my XT862. I flashed Minimoto 1.7 to it and I get the "Invalid SIM, 911 calls only" message. Which is weird since my phone works off of CDMA. Anyone else have a clue to remedy this?
I tried your build.prop on the stock ROM with the xt883 radio, but after setting permissions and rebooting, I still have the CDMA network options present, plus the occasional "switch to global" prompt.

I have the 862 with the 883 radio and occasionally my phone will lose the cdma/global options entirely but then after a reboot they willl randomly reappear. The first time this happened I thought it was great lol cuz I don't need them anyways but then the box that normally pops up if you lose gsm signal asking you to switch to global popped up but said "no cdma signal detected, switching to gsm/umts mode" which is exactly the opposite of what it normally says. Kinda weird and I have no idea what would cause it since I'm using the build.prop found in the diy thread with no other changes that I would assume many others are using.

is Z3C docomo japan version worth buying ?

i found it on ebay for a very good price
http://www.ebay.com/itm/UNLOCKED-SO...008?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item339ce86cd8
is it any different then the international version software and hardware wise?
is it possible to flash international or custom roms on it?
what do ppl think is this version worth buying?
i'm using z3c docomo. since december, docomo z3cs were sold on taobao, and a lot of ppl in china are using it.
yes, you can flash international version roms using flash tools.
afaik, there is no official bootloader unlock of docomo z3cs,but giefroot with locked bootloader is possible.
but, since the nfc chip is different between docomo and international versions, using a non-docomo rom will break nfc, and you must adb block com.android.nfc or you will get battery drain.
block nfc will lose features like android beam, cause play memories mobile app to fc(i guess so),and turn on ultra stamina mode will be a bootloop.
also, i feel the touch is a bit too sensitive ,eg. in system setting, the list sometimes scroll a bit when you lifting up your finger.
someone has reported that touchscreen is normal when using a docomo rom, but i doubt it, because there are some reports in this forum about touch issues of international versions.
finally, the docomo logo on back panel is not as nice looking as sony's, but you can change the back panel by yourself.

i am using Z3c docomo version. i flashed my z3c using international version rom. after flashed it, NFC cannot be turn off. @defia there is 'R' symbol on status bar which means roaming on my network. even it was roaming, i don't get any extra charge. but it is litle bit annoying to see that symbol show up in status bar instead of 'H','H+','LTE',etc..
is it band related? because when i check it, it has JAPAN band, there is no options for another bands.

Hello!
Did you managed to get rid of the roaming (R) icon above the signal bars?
I know there is also the NFC problem, but that one doesn't bother me, I don't use the NFC functionality so I disabled it and there are no problems.
Roaming problem on the other hand, whenever I disable the Wi-Fi or I go out of the Wi-Fi coverage area, I keep seeing the notification:
"Data Roaming"
"No connection. Data roamning is off."
I have tried all suggested solutions from different sources and none of them worked:
1. Installed various firmwares (D5803, D5833, Global, Central Europe, USA, etc) - I live in Romania, Europe and I use "orange" oprator. (no luck)
Extra info: I also tried the branded firmware from Orange Romania but didn't work, still roaming...
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stock-firmwares-d5803-d5833-t2906706
2. Rooted (with 4.4.4 and also with 5.0.2). (no luck)
Extra info: I just rooted the firmwares from D5803, didn't try the original firmware SO-02G.
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/how-to-root-backup-drm-keys-t3013343
3. Updated radio bands (Before I was seeing only JAPAN band, now after update I see them all EURO Band, JAPAN Band, US Band, etc) but unfortunately... (no luck)
Extra info: *#*#4636#*#* -> See screenshot
URL: http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...ad-progress-please-leave-im-updating-t2871269
I ran out of options, if anybody can suggest other things I could try to get rid of the Roaming I would be really grateful
Thank you!
I have the same problem, my z3 compact is from Japan, Docomo SO-02G, I cannot seem to remove the annoying Data Roaming notification. I also checked the GSM/UMTS Setting, only Japan Setting was available. Anyone with a fix for this?

Are u now using Z3c docomo version ? If yes, it means that your current carrier's network is not registered in the phone (or something like that). All you have to do is root, install xposed then run the module name "National roaming" then you can get rid of the Roaming icon, actually it's not affect to the phone's battery or anything, just the display icon problem.

I'm kinda a new user and I'm still trying to learn my way around rooting and all that stuff. My phone is not rooted yet, so I guess I'm still so far away from getting to the solution. But it's comforting to hear that there is a solution, although not yet tested but I am optimistic about it.
BTW, you said you are already rooted, I would love it if you would update this thread after you try to suggested fix.
I'm still learning how to do the rooting, and I'm not the fast learner type.. hehe..
by the way is your phone a NTT Docomo SO-02G also?

Yes, my phone is also NTT Docomo SO-02G and I hate it already! Just because of the two problems (NFC + Roaming) but at least I am grateful that due to this problems I was forced to learn so many things and managed to install various firmwares, root, upgrade basebands...
Believe me, I was a an iOS (iPhone 4, 4S, 5) user for the past 3 years so this means a lot to me (managing to do stuff on Android) )
I will give it a try tonight and then I will let you know if it works
The problem is I have installed and rooted Lolipop and unfortunately there is no stable version of xPosed for Lolipop, only an alpha version which requires some extra package to be installed and I didn't managed yet, but I will downgrade to 4.4.4 and then install the stable version of xPosed and try the "National roaming" module.
Keep in touch.
Alas!
WOW! This is such a blessing, I was actually hoping for someone else using SO-02G because I'm in tons of dilemma, whether to use this or that or what to do or not, because majority of the english help and guides as we know are from the international version. You are heaven sent, I would surely stay connected, given that I am in the process of learning to do all those stuffs in my SO-02G..
Found this All-In-1 guide here,. May I ask, Did you use this guide in all the processes you did?

Do you have the volte switch in your settings ?
VoLTE is a feature that is provisioned by your carrier. Most carriers will not provision VoLTE unless they have an open policy (allows all capable devices), or if you are using a carrier-branded phone. For the second option, lots of carriers claim that it is to ensure stability and quality of service, though I suspect that's all BS they spew in an attempt to sell more of their own phones.
Anyhow, try to find out if your carrier provisions VoLTE to unlocked/unbranded phones. If not, activating the VoLTE setting within the phone will not do anything.
I'm in an AT&T HD Voice coverage area.. never been able to use it or even see if it works. The build.prop edits seem to work for some but I've never been able to get it to work at all.. Could be AT&T blocking it of course since I don't have an AT&T device really on any of my 4 lines.. All unlocked non-carrier phones.

It is toggled on under status bar together with VoWifi but no idea how to activate it. I suspect my carrier doesn't allow it yet for this phone.
I seem to now have been able to activate it by *#800# but still no joy. I'm guessing this is due to three blocking it rather than my phone.
I use the VoLTE enabler in Magisk and once I enable and restart I have no issues. Workout it I don't get HD calling and any call I make, my phone drops from LTE to H. I'm on AT&T.
OP3T on Three UK. Been using crDroid Pie recently and i'm now able to make VoLTE calls. It comes and goes though. The options are in Settings and 'Enabled'. Phone Test shows VoLTE Provisioned. VoLTE icon show up in Status Bar.
Most of the time when i make a call i still see the Signal Icon drop from '4G' to 'H', but if i repeat dial a few times it latches on to VoLTE. I'm not sure why the inconsistency, but my 4G reception is weak and prone to disappearing entirely, so maybe that's why.
Three APN settings in ROM are same as always. No special 'ims' APN or settings.
@Eggstones
Edit: The package 'org.codeauora.ims' has been mentioned a few times for throwing up a 'Device is HD capable' Notification. I assume it's updates to this package that have enabled VoLTE?

As i said, it's working on Pie ROMs. It's not going to start working for you unless you update. It's impossible to say if the same will apply when OOS Pie is released. Maybe, maybe not.

Have you used custom ROMs before? Is there something holding you back, or do you just prefer OOS?

No. I have never tried to install one. Not sure how to do it. I'm aware of various guides but haven't taken the plunge. The furthest I got was rooting some old phones.

You wouldn't need to Root. Everything else is a doddle on this phone. You might give it some thought. The obvious thing is to find out what the differences are and weigh up the pro's and cons. If Battery life is your absolute priority then OOS might be better. If wifi calling is your priority then custom ROMs are the answer. Gotta decide where you might gain, and where you might lose out.
If you decide to go for it, this is a good guide:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-5/how-to/oneplus-5-unlock-bootloader-flash-twrp-t3624877
Of course that is for the OP5 so you wouldn't use the software linked in that thread, but the principal is the same. The equivelent software for this phone is available here. The guide gets you through the important steps of unlocking Bootloader and getting TWRP on your phone. Beyond that it's easy as Pie to get a custom ROM on your phone.
Just ask if you need help. I can link you to the files you'd need.
Thank you. I might give it a go later this week

Change preferred networks with root

Good day.
As i no longer have the '2g only' option in preferred networks in my phone, i have been searching for an root way to add that to my phone.
I stumbled upon an forum that has an solution on MIUI devices, that consists in changing a value in a database file 'settings.db' with an SQL editor. (see attached image)
It seems that Sony must have the file in another directory, as the db file was supposed to be in '/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases', but in my phone i couldn't find the file.
Could anyone direct me to that file?
Thank you.
At least I have an option "GSM only" in preferred network settings. I'd think it means "2G".

You don't need to do any of that. Open you phone and type *#*#7378423#*#*
Then go into Service settings and choose GSM_UMTS, or GSM_ONLY.
You may have better results with the first option, but if you fail to get any signal, try the second.
Good day and thank you for your reply.
I already used that way with the service menu, but every time i want to switch between 2g and 4g, i have to do that procedure, that is not very pratical.
That is why i am searching a way to change the settings in my phone to accomplish that more easily.
The only 2 options in my phone is '2g/3g' and '4g/3g/2g'.

Good day.
For 3 main reasons.:
1 - Most of the time 4g uses 4x more battery power than 2g.
2 - In my country house, 4g is unstable, and keeps switching between 4g and 3g.
3 - Throughout the day, while at work, i use my phone mostly to receive messages in Whatsapp and Facebook messenger, so i don't need that much throughput.
Thank you.

Most providers these days will sell you a signal booster. Connects to your home broadband but puts out a 3g/4g signal for your phone to lock onto.
I use Vodafone, they have Suresignal
I think trying to fight your phone connecting to a 4G mast is a loosing battle.
Good day.
I remembered, if i flash with flashtool, the 'modem' or other part, from another country's FTF file, would it bring back the '2g only' option?
Thank you.

Fortunately, the whole different modems for different regions thing disappeared a few years ago, what a nightmare.
But having said that all firmwares are equal, I do remember being told about 2g being enabled as a choice in a Russian build. I was being corrected for saying that they are all the same. But I can’t find the post or help you with any more than a maybe….
As I have said earlier, at least I have an option for GSM only. I'm on the latest Customized NOBA (Nordic/Baltic) 47.2.A.4.45. I don't know if flashing some file from the fw would bring the option to a firmware that is lacking it though...
Oh cr*p, there goes my last hope Thank you anyway.
Guess i'll have to try and flash ROM's from all the country until i find one with the option, although i already tried the Russian build and no option.
Just the last stretch for this phone until the Galaxy S10 arrives.

Try Customized NOBA. If you don't get the option with that, it's not about fw but your service provider. If you are flashing the whole ROM that is.

Yes, thank you. This weekend i'll try that. What is strange that i had '2G only' option in Oreo, but not Pie. And other users that even replied to my post say that they have the option in their phone.

Nope, none of the other country ROM had the '2G only' option .

[Guide] Boost Cell Signal to Max & Force CA/Volte/Vowifi if avail from Stock ROM

This little trick will change your measly 1 bar signal to nearly max bars and give you a solid consistent signal in places you normally would hardly have a connection. At least it did for me.
This goes a bit beyond enabling VoLTE from your SIM Card Network settings which if you haven't done you should enable before trying this... Of course you may not have the same results I had. I found it works best from Stock ROM no root needed I'm currently on 9.0.12 but tried it on 9.0.11 and Beta 5.
Like any mod you should make a backup now and proceed with caution. (By caution I mean don't deviate from instructions goofing around in any engineering mode is never wise)
You should try check your internet speed now (Google internet speed! And take note of it then run the same test to see if your able to improve at all.
Step 1: Optional step but for best results open dialer and type: *#*#4636#*#* From this Testing Menu select Phone Information. Once in phone info select LTE/UMTS auto (prl) for preferred Network type. Then scroll down a bit and make sure VoLTE is switched on. Exit the phone info screen.
Step 2: Open Dialer again and type: *#800#
A Warning Message to Engineering Mode will popup. Press Enter.
Step 3: Click on the first option Called OnePlusLogKit
Once in the LogKit scroll down until you see the menu called: FunctionSwitch now click and select it.
Step 4: There's 3 checkboxes of interest in this menu... VoLTE Switch, VoWifi Switch and VT Switch. I enable all three but some may have better luck not enabling VT Switch. After enabling each option it'll try and reboot your phone just say no until you have all you want enabled.
Now reboot and profit.
I can tell you without a doubt that if your using a stock OOS Rom and using TMobile as your provider that these changes will not eat up your battery any more than normal and altho depending on your location and towers speed availability this can and will increase your overall speed and your ability to maintain a solid connection in low signal areas! It forces carrier aggration meaning it makes the modem in your phone connect multiple times over varied frequencies to achieve the highest level of connection. Like your old 4g phone x 3 up to 6 put together. So your speeds can be 600% improved. Of course the phone is technically supposed to do this on its own which it can occasionally but only in absolutely optimal situations. So not when you really need it too. Lol. So altho it might not work on carriers without this tech or overseas if u live in North America and use TMobile this will drastically help your phone whether you instantly notice it or not trust me it does!
f you notice anything negative or battery draining or your phone becomes even more radioactive simply go back into the menu and disable the Functions. If this helped you at all throw me a like. Enjoy.
Omg you have saved me. A million thanks. I switched to TMobile after getting this phone and the internet speed has been utterly garbage I've been going through hell with tech support trying to get useable speed. As you can see this made a world of difference.
Is there a way to do this ob pixel 2 xl?

Wow judging by your screenshot that's like 600% increase in service/speed!! Glad that I could help! I was in exactly the same spot you were in. For the life of me couldn't figure out why my Moto e got better service out here in the boonies I'm lucky to get a bar at that time.... Tried countless different methods techniques and apps with no success. Finally I talked T-Mobile into sending me a signal booster but that would only Boost whatever signal it could pickup itself.... So I have it 50yards from the house with an extension cable in a sealed bucket wrapped in towels just to get around 2-4mbs a sec download speeds n that was shotty every blizzard id get no service or **** would blow over n grounds frozen so unless I want to pay $150 for internet I can't watch anything n my son couldn't play his Fortnite.... I finally figured it out a couple days ago n haven't noticed any negative or side effects from the mod. If I get into an area with LTE+ and CA I can go faster than my buddies AT&T5Ge lol or around 130Mbs but before the hack in the same spot I'd average around 15mbs. I'm curious if people are having speed improvements with WiFi signals I don't have a good one so I couldn't test it. I can confirm flashing the Oos based custom roms or Magisk ROMs either before or after greatly slows/lags/retards signal quality and speed. I'm going to work on a ROM that doesn't and also has tethering throttle bypass built in... I'm thinking the reasons they slow everything down is because their all overseas ports rather than base it off a 6t stock.... Anyways thanks again for sharing ur results bladestonez and I
Appreciate the screenshot!:laugh::good::victory:

I'm sure there is to some extent as long as the device has a newer qcom modem and supports Carrier Aggregation & VoLTE in theory this would work for it. But without having the device to test with I couldn't tell you how to do it. Your probably gonna b messing around with dialer codes that lead to engineering modes. Sorry wish my Pixel2 didn't run off last year I'd be a lot more help.:crying:
Why has to be LTE/UMTS? Mine has everything enabled except network type is LTE/WCDMA. It seems there is not too much difference.

UMTS is mainly for MMS support while normal texts are already sent through lte. Anyone who's CDMAless should be on LTE/umts
I have tmobile and verizon dual sim setup, does this apply to this guide too?
It doesn't.

For all intensive purposes step 1 isn't necessary but if your using tmobile I've found that it will give you a more solid and reliable connection. But ur right this is an optional step however like @sonic1675 said unless your using Verizon or some cdmaish why have anything cdma related enabled? For step one any network type is allowed. But for TMO from my own personal experiences I prefer to use the LTE/umts but to each his own real question is did the mod work well on your Wcdma/LTE setup?
It's 4Anyone.
@humblehyper Verizon is fine to try it with. If u could do a before and after speed test comparison with screenshots to show your fellow vzw folk it works that'd be awesome.
But yeah this mod will work on OnePlus 4,5, 6/6t any carrier any location as long as the engineering apps are accessible and the same as the lay out describe...

I appreciate that you atleast answered. I do want a oneplus 6t but waiting for a good deal to buy it for.
Do you know anybody i can get help from?
Tmo here. I get better service without the VT
Last 2 test disabled vs previous 3 enabled vs previous 2 disabled
Thanks for the tip... Now to try by work... My first couple test scores
I'm also on T-Mobile and followed the guide. Definite improvement with download speeds, upload is still meh.
All 4 tests are done in the same location, the top 2 are the results after making the changes, and the result at the very top in orange (?) is single mode testing because I use AdGuard.
In case anyone is wondering why my Speedtest app looks different, it's because I use a smaller display size.
EDIT: Fixed screenshot upload, as AdGuard for some reason broke it.
Hey, why can't I activate VoLTE in the first step? The switch is grey and cannot be checked.
Did anyone try to check if VoLTE/VoWifi work after doing this? I have an unlocked Tmo variant but converted to OOS with active dual sim cards and I lost internet everytime while on a call. I was curious to try but did not work for me. I might be wrong but I think this trick might help ppl with single sim card or with other carriers like AT&T and Verizon from another forum here https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-6t/help/att-verizon-volte-vowifi-calling-t3860031.

Wow!! Works like a charm!!!
Will this work with any operator, or t-mobile only? I'm from Argentina, here i have Claro and no VoLTE, VoWiFi and nothing like that.
Sent from my OnePlus6T using XDA Labs
On VZW I was on and have tested this previously, LTE/TD-SCDMA/UMTS as this was the default. It performed fine. I switched to LTE/UMTS, the signal/speed is basically identical.
Default bands are usually 13 with both primary and neighbor but sometimes switches to band 4 or vanishes as only a primary and no neighbor on both settings. So, obviously just telling the radio it can use TC-SCDMA even CDMALess makes no difference since my SIM and phone is provisioned by VZW to only use LTE/UMTS anyway.
So going from LTE/TC-SCDMA/UMTS to LTE/UMTS Auto (PRL) from the original doesn't really do anything for the tower it connects to for me personally or speeds.
Also, the other tweaks did nothing but make things slower in the other menu.
