Welcome to the thread on Kali NetHunter for the HTC One M8.
If you don't know what Kali NetHunter is, well, it's the entire Kali Linux operating system in a chroot on your phone, plus a bunch of awesome apps for executing exploits, fixing things, doing cool things. It goes on, I suppose.
I'm gonna be honest guys, I'm not a security person.
What I do know though, is that there is apt-get, and apt-get is life.
Find much more information here.
The answer to all your questions, generally the answer is YES, IT CAN DO THAT.
The updater zip will add a few files to your /system partition, and install all of the NetHunter apps to your /data partition.
The chroot is located in /data/local, so you don't have to worry about your system partition being full. It's full read/write capable.
Understand that the zip will replace your current kernel with a completely different one.
This is necessary because most stock or custom kernels don't provide the drivers needed to operate most of Kali NetHunter's features.
DOWNLOAD
Lollipop:Current version: 3.1.0 (stable, 2016-04-29)
Marshmallow: Current version: 3.1.0 (stable, 2016-04-29)
Marshmallow with chroot to kali-rolling: http://www.mediafire.com/download/e6zoxhrn9zcv99h/nethunter-m8-marshmallow-kalifs-full-v3.1.zip
Kernel: http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
BEFORE INSTALLING
Please make sure your phone boots fine and runs fine before flashing NetHunter.
The Kali chroot and apps are installed on your data partition (in /data/local for chroot). To initialize the chroot and install Kali Linux, you need to start the Kali NetHunter app.
The NetHunter installer will automatically install SuperSU in system mode, which I consider to be more stable. Since NetHunter already modifies your system partition, there is no need to use systemless SuperSU anyways.
FULL FRESH INSTALL STEPS
1. Flash Lollipop/Mashmallow Firmware
2. Make sure that you are on Lollipop/Mashmallow
3. Flash nethunter-m8whl-lollipop-kalifs-full-v3.0.zip/nethunter-m8-marshmallow-kalifs-full-v3.1.zip
4. Reboot
5. Enjoy
Change log:
06/14/2016: Version 1.0 for lollipop
06/15/2016: Version 1.5 for marshmallow
06/30/2016: updating chroot to kali-rolling (MM only)
SCREENSHOT
DEVELOPMENT
For the kernel included in NetHunter for the HTC One M8, you can find the sources here: http://www.htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads
See the Kali NetHunter installer source here: https://github.com/offensive-security/kali-nethunter
See the Kali NetHunter app source here: https://github.com/offensive-security/nethunter-app
It is powered by idleKernel, however none of the idleKernel scripts (ikconfig, usb control, kernel tweaks) are available by default. I recommend installing idleKernel zip (non-NetHunter) from the idleKernel thread and then flashing the NetHunter updater or kernel installer over idleKernel. You will then have all of idleKernel and Kali NetHunter's features at your disposal.

Interesting, and thanks for the contribution. But I have a couple (hopefully constructive) questions:
1) Why Lollipop firmware at this point (when MM has been out for a while now)?
2) I'm concerned about the file name "nethunter-m8whl-lollipop-kalifs-full-v3.0.zip", since "whl" typically refers to the Sprint Harmon-Kardon variant. Not sure how much difference this makes, but the Sprint (CDMA) variant uses a different kernel from the "international" M8, so it may make a difference.
Wait for MM
My question didn't post... odd.
Is there a specific HTC Rom required? GPE/Sense?
I read a bit about this team, it seems they have they support MM on other devices, perhaps this one as well?
OP, maybe add their homepage as well? I see the github, but I found more information here as well.

Lol, can you please elaborate on which one? There are so many. Does it matter which version? Does it need to be the sprint HK stock rom? Can it be modified by anything else? I'm not sure what all this modifies, but if any stock based rom will do, it would be sweet.

So any Sense ROM? I'm not so much worried about the device, more the rom. What files are modified in the rom itself?
Goodafternoon!
This is pretty cool!! Thank you so much!
Installed on MM build, seems to work fine!
Will report back in a few days! I also own a Pwnpad (Nexus 7), This is to compare!
Well Done!

Try updating TWRP (Thread here) before ruling things out. That is a very outdated version at this point and probably would say the same thing if you tried to install a ROM. Newer versions of TWRP handle MM files.

Hello XDA-Users,
I have a Question for what I can't find any awnswer...
I have an International HTC One with CID T-MOB101, HBOOT 1.55 and I want to S-OFF.
I already unlocked via HTCDev and flashed a custom Rom.
But with rumrunners S-OFF method it failes every time.. I used many various custom roms, but with no it works.
I can't go back to really stock to try it then, because for this I need S-OFF...
Sometimes it poures 8 times and write then, I have to wait 30 seconds, pray, (...) and try it again. When I tried it again it fails again...
Another time it says you have to flash an other Rom or something else.
So I don't know what Rom to try for getting S-Off..
If someone knows how to fix it, or what Rom to try, write me please.
Please help me
Thanks.
I am having the exact same issue!

I tried the rumrunner tool on 4 different PCs, each of them with Windows 7 Ultimate x86 or x64 and always on USB 2.0 port without any Hubs or something like that. The phone was always directly connected to an USB 2.0 port. I also tried different usb cables.
I always ran soju.exe as Administrator and accepted every Superuser request.
ROMs I tried it with: Stock Android 4.3 Sense 5.5, Android Revolution HD 41.0 and ViperOne 3.5.0
I even used an Ubuntu 13.10 Live CD but it never worked.
My bootloader is of course unlocked, TWRP 2.6.3.3 is installed and the phone is/was rooted on every rom I tried.
I attached the linux terminal log and the windows cmd log.
EDIT: I used the latest rumrunner v0.5.0.
Yep
We have exactly the same issues...
I'm trying now on Viper One 4.0.1, the new One.. Hope it works :fingers-crossed:
But I don't know why this doesn't work...

After some emailing back and forth the last couple of days, I agreed to accept the risks and be a test case to see if it was possible to S-OFF my device, since my firmware was to new to make use of the existing exploits Rumrunner 0.5.0 is using. So we had a remote session together..... and a couple of minutes later my phone was S-OFF.
Don't ask me what the devs did, I looked at the adb screen, saw lots of commands and screen output flying around, but for the most part didn't understand it... Anyway my phone is still alive and I'm S-OFF.
Thx devs and I also made a donation (1HE93648R1560915F)!

At least we now know that the rumrunner devs have a working exploit for the latest firmware and hboot version.
We just need to wait for them to release an updated version of their tool.

Just boot your device into bootloader and then run this command in terminal/cmd "fastboot getvar all".

Hi all,
I've been banging my head for quite some time on why I haven't received any of the OTA updates. I'm still on 4.2.2 and seeing my friends, with different variants of course, getting KitKat... pisses me off
As you can see I'm S-on and was wondering if I really need to go through the hassle of S-Off.
Can anyone here offer a simple walkthrough or a link to download a relevant OTA or Stock ROM that could start getting me OTA updates?
In the searches I've done I couldn't find an OTA I could manually flash since none of the OTAs base versions is 2.24.401.9. Signature fail every time.
adb and fastboot fully functional.
I didn't flash any recovery or other img yet. Fresh out of the box.

No idea why people want stock OTA...
Unlock bootloader, install TWRP, flash whatever rom you want. No need for s-off.
Simple as 1, 2, 3.
Moderator Information,
I have removed your IMEI number. This is personal information and you shouldn't post it on line.
Ghost
I have exactly the same problem. HTC One is unrooted (or whatever HTC's expression for root is), but it doesnt want to update to last version 4.4.2, which is already available for my version 3.62.401.1.
If anyhone has an idea how to get OTA for 4.4.2, please let us know.
Why not just flash ARHD 5.1...4.19.401.8.
You will have the latest rom, identical to the stock Rom, but slicker, faster and better. When HTC decide to update that Rom, ARHD will be the first to offer it. No waiting for it to become available for you country/network or variant.

Well, thanks.
I wish to have stock OTA so I won't need to chase after stable releases, battery drain issues, or other wonderful scenarios I know you guys handle daily.
On that matter, installing another stock will put me on track for OTA updates? Are there other factors that could prevent it?
Appreciate the help.

That's fine - to each his own. My experience has been that you get great stability and even better battery (using custom kernels) with custom roms, but hey, that's just me
You'll just have to wait for your carrier to send the OTA - you can't force it.
This may or may not be n00b question!
I have never had any trouble rooting/installing roms on my previous devices, but with my HTC One, I can't figure out what has been giving me all of these bootloops since coming to baad's rom.
I have tried installing this rom, through its various versions, but ever since coming to 2.6 and above (2.7.0 and 3.0.0) I have managed to get a bootloop when installing something from Insertcoin Market, as well as when restarting from the boot menu. To resolve this, I just install the rom once more via recovery, but it's a pain.
I have tried both TWRP 2.6.3.3 and 2.7.4.05.05, but neither seem to resolve the issue. I haven't noticed this to be a recurring problem with any other users, and those that have had bootloops, their solutions do not apply to my case.
I have done both dirty and clean flashes, so I can't pinpoint the issue.
Anyone have any similar issues?
I appreciate all of the help!
I bought the phone in used condition, so I'm thinking there might have been something the previous owner used that is conflicting with my current setup?
Is my best bet to revert back to stock (rom, firmware, and kernel) and try to replicate the issues?
So if you instaall the ROM and setup the basic things - you get a bootloop after reboot?
Can you post fastboot getvar all (no IMEI/Serial) here?

Well, Only things coming to my mind:
Check download with MD5 if it is not corrupted.
I also updated the Radio - Mine is 4T.27.xxxx (yours - 4A.19.3263.13) - might worth to update it to the latest - search for firmwares in development thread.
Some Aroma setting is not currently ported good, thus causing bootloop - check the latest ROM from SVN.

you will probably need to reset your phone back to stock in order to take the ota.
you can go back to stock using a nandroid backup + stock recovery of your version or by using a RUU (easy with s-off)

I have same problem.
I don't want to go back to standard recovery, then again setup TW recovery. I don't know how to returt standard recovery.
I just need to delete this update or setup it with my teamwin recovery. Is it possible?
I hate this message with system update. Each hour it disturbs me.

The only way to get the OTA update is to have stock recovery, stock rom and maybe some files in /preload/ directory. There is no way to flash the files in TWRP.

Post a fastboot getvar all except for imei and serialno or if you know what your version-main then you can look through this Collection of Stock Recoveries and download it.
I have an htc m8 eye. I flashed magisk and no poblems at all.
I started editing system files but after reboot they revert back. Then i have known that i should install a custom kernel or using source make a module to disable it.
But custom kernel is not there for my device and i dont know much about kernel making.
So someone please help me ??

Hm, I don't have kernel source for that version, as it hasn't been posted to htcdev. I can build the module based on the latest source available, but I'll likely need to hex edit the module for it to have a chance of working on your device (and even then, it's a long shot). Can you zip up the /system/lib/modules folder on your device and upload? I'll need to edit the wp_mod module to have the same module_layout as the current modules on the device. Thanks!
P.S. I already have the kernel module built, so I'll just need to build the Magisk module. What version of Magisk are you using?
P.P.S. @MarkTejo Please see my edit above - I only need system/lib/modules, not the whole system/lib folder - sorry for the typo!

Give the attached zip a try. You can install in Magisk Manager (or TWRP, if available) and then reboot.
To test to see if the kernel module loaded, once the ROM is booted, please open an adb shell and run
Code:
lsmod
so I can see if the module loaded. If it did, wp_mod will be listed in the output. If it's not there, run
Code:
su
insmod /system/lib/modules/wp_mod.ko
and let me know what the output is.

Excellent! So the write protection module is loaded - you should now be able to make modifications to system and they should persist through reboots. Let me know if it's working for you, and thank @flar2 for providing the source for that module!

It's possible that Marshmallow uses a different method for write protection that the module doesn't currently account for. If that's the case, then there's nothing I can do.
If you have TWRP, you can try replacing it there and see if it sticks.

No, you can't just port a kernel. You need kernel source from HTC.
