Phone Over Heating with Android Auto - Android Auto General

A little over a week ago I became the happy owner of a 2016 Volkswagen Golf GTI. I used my Galaxy S7 Edge with the Android Auto for the first week. After a bit of a tricky time getting it paired it worked great! No disconnects, no phone issues, and it operated very smooth!
A couple days ago I switched back to using my Nexus 6P. I noticed yesterday the phone got VERY hot after using it with Android Auto for about 40 minutes. I figured since it was a hot day and with my interior being black, then it was mostly just heat the phone absorbed from inside the hot car. Today it was much cooler only 82 degrees, and I blasted AC on about medium the entiretime, and after about 30 minutes when I went to unplug the phone it was EXTREMELY hot again. It had to be at least 130-135 degrees F on the back cover. Because it was hot to the point of stinging my hand, but not enough to burn. Like a silver metal poll thats been in the sun for hours. About that kind of hot.
This was very shocking because as we all know the Nexus 6P has the coolest running 810 processor of any phone. I have never had it get hot before in many months of use. Only warm. I know it can't be a Android Auto problem since it doesn't happen to my S7 with the 820 processor. It seems that Android Auto is the final kryptonite for the 810 processor of the 6P. My M9 with the 810 got hot like this when playing intesive games while it charged. But nothing like that withthe 810 processor in tge 6P before. Is anyone else experiencing over heating issues with their phone? If so, what phone and what processor?

I have a 2016 Optima SX Technology and have the same issue. There appears to be confounding issues, but my understanding is that this particular problem is Galaxy S6 ATT latest update. My issues in no particular order
The phone drops my GMAIL auto sync each time I remove it from an Android Auto session. Perhaps stops autosync upon opening but can't tell since we have no phone access during session
Phone will not charge during AA session, a Kia issue because they only provide 100 mA at the USB connect port. One needs to use a different port for proper charging. Kia is aware, will not do anything yet. Curious to know if other automakes don't provide sufficient current to charge during session
AA is a great driving assist, but with these hassles in the latest configs Gal S6, Android 6.0.1 Knox 2.6 2500 mA battery, Optima '16 SX Tech, the functionality if very limited to short hops. No one wants to arrive at work with a dead phone...............

Foll-up Resolved
Please accept this follow up to my issue and possibly others running the latest OTA updatd of the Android OS.
A separate post on this great site mentioned that after every OTA update, it is best practise to backup and perform a full factory reset.
So I decided to backup on Samsung SmartSwitch, rather simple took ~10 min. The full rest was performed off the settings menu.
When it was done, I provided my WIFI router password, restored my phone's app's settings, etc. and Now I have a cool running phone, that both charges over my Kia Optima low current port and also runs Android Auto without either an overheating problem or gmail sync issue. I will keep monitoring it. But as of now, I am a full believer in the power of a factory reset after a forced OTA update.

Glad to hear yours resolved so far. Mine charges great with my Nexus 6p and Volkswagen. Still getting the over heating some but it seems it's not as severe now. Still continues some but will keep monitoring.

I have a Nexus 5 (patch level May 2016) and it is getting far too hot when using Android Auto. It's getting so hot that I doubt that it will run without damage for many hours.
This occurs especially when I am using the navigation. However Android Auto without navigation makes not too much sense.
I am going to install the july OTA Update during th enext days, however I don't expect nay change.

Terrible phone

Has anyone else had these issues? I am planning to take this phone back tomorrow. The touch screen is completely random. It'll randomly scroll fast or click while scrolling. Playing games is near impossible because it won't recognize every touch. As i type this, it seems to randomly repeat words that i type and i have to delete them. The battery life for a new phone seems terrible. I had better battery life with my 1+ year old S5 with the original battery. If the phone is hot at all (which seems to happen randomly as well) it'll take hours to charge and the battery will drain incredibly quick. I charged it for around 6 hours and it was still at 60%, using the factory charger too. This is the worst experience I've had with a new "high end" android phonephonw (theres theres the double word issue i mentioned. Even did it while typing about the double word issue lol)

What firmware version are you running? Some of the things mentioned above have been fixed with latest OTA.
Android is 5.1. I've checked all updates and none are available

Try a factory reset. I don't have any issues at all, just the slow capture speed of the camera. Kids move and its blurry. Google camera seems to be a little better...

Check settngs - About Phone - Software info and see if your software version is LS991ZV5. This version of the software fixed the touchscreen for me. If you haven't received it yet, you may check your local Sprint repair center store and see if they can force a download for you.
I still have the touch screen problems with zv5

Galaxy S6 Active getting warm. Anyone else?

I traded in my standard Galaxy S6 for a 64GB Galaxy S6 Active about a week ago. I got tired of charging the S6 3 or 4 times a day and since AT&T still had some 64GB Active models in their warehouse, I thought I would give it a try. What I'm experiencing is what seems to me to be a little higher than normal temperatures. My old S6 was always cool to the touch. My new S6 Active almost never gets below 36 C., even sitting idle for an hour. I'm using Samsung Info app and CPU-Z to document the temperature. "Normal" use such as emails, web surfing, etc. puts it in the mid 40's to mid 50's range. For example, I just watched a 3 minute YouTube video in a cool, air conditioned room and the CPU is showing 47 C. The battery seems to be fine, never going above 32-33 C. I searched other forums and couldn't find hardly a thing nor did an internet search turn up anything. It seems the S6 Edge is the one with the overheating problems. Anyway, I've cleared the cache partition twice and did a factory reset twice. Results are still about the same. I installed Watchdog which reports "no misbehaving apps". I really like the S6 Active and don't want to return it unless everyone thinks my experience is not normal. I realize XDA is more of a developer's forum, but I can't get an answer anywhere else.
So, what I'm asking is what temp's are you experiencing with your Actives while idle, "normal" activities, gaming etc? Thanks in advance for any help and replies.
Just a quick glance at my temps shows 42°C and I just have my browser and a handful of other nonintensive apps. It can certainly get into the 50's+ while doing intensive tasks. I would monitor your battery usage over a days use because heat = processor being used. See if there are any specific apps using an excessive amount of battery. That being said, it shouldn't be dangerous for the processor at all. If the processor was overheating, the system would automatically shut down.
I've found my S6A gets warm in my pocket. I've done some investigation and determined that Chrome sometimes uses 100% CPU even at idle in my pocket. If I kill it, temps go back to normal. I am tempted to use an alternative browser until this gets fixed. I've also factory reset (disable AT&T bloat) after every update so its not a FW bug.
Thanks for the replies. I've learned to close all apps frequently. I can live with it. I was just surprised as the regular S6 I had never got warm at all. At least it doesn't get as hot as the HTC M9 I used to have. Now that was a real hand warmer.

I usually run power saver to reduce the times I need to recharge my phone because it gets way to hot. Especially if I run a lot of processes on my phone.. I assume the reasoning behind it getting hot is the battery capacity...I have a thick case to reduce the burning feeling.. I also try to use the AC directly on it at tmes. Oh, and I get a lot of overheating notification aswell.

Note 8 overheating

Anyone get the dreaded note 8 overheating message yet? I just had a warning pop up an hour ago. Was using appradio Facebook messenger android auto with wi-fi Bluetooth and navigation turned on and screen at a little less than half brightness.. Should it be overheating like this? Kept warning me to shut everything down and was hot to the touch. There was an update for 7.1.1 just yesterday that I installed, could this be the cause?

with the s8 plus when it came out, I think some people were having some issues with the sdcards, if u have one inside, remove it restart and test for a bit and see if it fixes that issue.
ive got a 400gb sd card with many apps moved to it and running the phone on high performance mode and not ever seen this error...
I've never even felt the thing get warm.. Unless you are saying a 20°c battery and 23°c CPU is hot to you..
I was driving with the Note8 in the qi-infinity fast wireless car charger the other day. Was running waze and got the message "Battery overheating. Charging suspended!" I would acknowledge the message and after a few minutes it would come back. Unplugged the charger and just let it run on battery power. Didn't do it on the way home. All I could figure was the fact that the sun was shining through the windshield hitting the back of the phone while it was charging was creating more heat than it liked. Driving home the sun was behind me and not hitting the phone.
I'm out camping, laying in the sun streaming dual BT through poweramp on hi res. Weak signal and doing light browsing and my N8 is just warm, not hot. Wouldn't consider it close to over heating.

Advice for dedicated AA phone

Hi there,
since I don't want to root my main phone (don't want to hassle around with some apps that try to block on rooted phones, and also don't want to enable that stupid google voice assistant to use google maps and so on) I want to buy a phone just for Android Auto. This phone will be rooted and stay in the car all time, it could also get a custom ROM. Since I don't have any experience with AA mirror yet and also not that much experience with rooting, it would be great if you have some suggestions what I could get for this use case.
From what I found here so far, the requirements seem to be:
- easy to root
- possible to install custom roms
- will have the display turned on (for AA mirror) for several hours whenever traveling a longer distance
-- maybe heat could be an issue?
- should not have the cheapest battery since it will be charged for long times when traveling as well as not charged at all for several days
-- unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be smartphones anymore that can be used with batteries pulled out
-- is there anything to be considered because of the always-usb-connected use case
- preferably a cheap model from a premium manufacturer
Any suggestion for my decicion or experience with a dedicated phone would be helpful.
Have you considered a raspberry pi?
There are plug n play rom do get that up and running as a AA display

Every phone should work.
It's only important that you use an app like Automate to put the phone into airplane mode whenever the cable is disconnected (=car head unit shut off). This requires root.
I personally use an old Galaxy S4 with ridicously bad battery health and it stays on for around 2 days without driving. It charges while you're driving, of course.
No issues with heat. I keep it in the burning hot glovebox.
I am doing this for a year now. I use an old nexus 5x.
Until now i had a original based custom rom, but just ysterday i wanted to refresh some things so i installed slim rom. (It is very light and dont have play services. I then installed pico gapps. It is the lighter you can flash so that android auto to work).
I use 7.1.2 custom rom because i think is better for android auto.
Anyway what i have:
-I used a switch (on/of), soldered in a cable so tha start / stop android auto just by turning on/off the switch.
- I disabled completely lockscreen. Set brightness to min and disable auto brightness.
- Use titanium to freeze whatever i don't need. Many things including phone app, etc)
- I used tasker. 2 conditions:
When phone doesn't charge set battery save mode.
When car mode is enabled (which means android auto is running) enable wifi on, location on etc. When car mode of disable all, also kill 20 apps (so that no app stay in background so no battery consumption when android auto goes off).
(some use only charging condition but my setup is more complicated so this works fantastic.)
With this, i practically can use android auto without ever battery discharge. When phone doesn't change and android auto doesn't run, battery consumption is very very low. It can Last more than 20 days and battery is very old.
I actually have some more complicated setup. When switch is off i change from another usb of the car (not the one i use for android auto). I have in this usb a changer with more amper to charge faster when i don't use android auto..
I don't propose it as this is much difficult for the average person. Just write it as an idea if car doesn't change fast (this happens in my car).
I posted my use / ideas. Some may be useful to some, some other not.
I may post a video here displaying it some time when i found time and tasker setup if anyone need it as many wants this. I have read alot to do this in varius sites.
I'll post it here also:
I made a 4 minutes video displaying android auto mirroring in my car, with some apps and a dedicated phone with a switch for this. It may give some ideas:

You mean galaxy s5?, I don't have s5. I had it in past. I would install something similar to the rom i installed to nexus 5x i have.
The lighter nougat rom with pico gapps.
If it goes ok with battery consumpsion an especially standby time you keep it. If not try another one.

I remember that I read somewhere that Android Auto only needs the data wires from the USB cable so it would be possible to connect only the two data wires to the cars USB port and the other two wires to a fast charger, I think there even are prebuild Y-like cables that do exactly this.
But I'm not sure if this still works as expected since nowadays we have USB-C connectors and a lot of different fast charging standards. Some require the data cables to be short cutted (so you cannot use data at the same time) while others send different voltage impulses as handshakes to determine the charger type.
But maybe it is worth looking into this topic for you (and maybe for me aswell if I will encounter the same issue).
Doesn't look like this would be working, found a thread here about it: https://forum.xda-developers.com/an.../usb-y-cable-to-quick-charge-android-t3448805

You read my mind..
That i was thinking to do in future. I just dont change anything yet as everything working perfect.
But i think more would become simplier if i connect only the 2 data cables in car usb of android auto (or the 3rd cable , earth, also), and charging from the other usb with the fast charger.
As i remember it was working when i experimended.

Sorry, haven't seen this post. I think it is not possible with both USBs but you can put one phone to the usb and use it as a forwarder for the other phone.

I'm confused. Why does a phone using android auto have to be rooted?
well,
i been doing for the past 4 years already. you can use non root device but you miss out on video play on the car screen.
i am using redmi 4x and redmi 3, both because the availability of custom rom. but i didn use custom rom because it seems the custom roam break data and sms.
not all old phone can be use because on certain devices, android auto takes ages to connect to satellite. for example i hav tried S4, huawei mate 7, Vivo V9, all these device have problem with gps connection, sometimes didn't connect to satellite at all. it seems the low end android device release before 2016 have this issues. i think it also because of my geographic location whic require a-gps, glonass and bds, the only it work.
heating issues, yes, it exist but i use kernal app to limit the max core speed. that it works.
the other reason i chose redmi because the ability to modify the init.rc file to make the device to auto boot when i start the car.
and to turn off the device automatically when you exit the car, i use microdroid and power unplug. apk, which only available on aptoid.
i also create a macro, to send my car location to me incase of theft.[emoji1696]

I'm looking into doing this. I have an old Sony Z5 Compact but if I recall, it was too slow for AA. Therefore, I'd appreciate any recommendations for a cheap used phone I could buy.
I'm thinking it has to have:
1. Good GPS
2. Ability to Charge faster than it can drain
3. nanoSIM
4. Ability to root for things like init.rc for autoboot.
5. Fast boot time would be nice but perhaps I can use tasker/automate to have it goto deep sleep when its not charging
Ideally, a cheap used unlocked phone I can buy on ebay. Just searching specs, I'm thinking perhaps a Moto G Stylus, Xiomi Poco M3. I also have an old Pixel XL but I'm saving that for unlimited google photos
Before my car had android auto, I used an old tablet. It worked OK but the biggest issue was that it could not charge faster than it would drain. The battery would eventually wear down. Also, after a while, AA would just crash. Ofcourse, here, I'm just mirroring so it is a little different.

I wrote above as "sosimple" but it now shows me "deleted member" due to a problem in xda forum through its moving period, that accidentally deleted my account.
Anyways, as i wrote i have an old nexus 5x. Its not the best for the work, but it does it.
If i was going to get one phone for this now, i would search something better. Probably is a good solution to buy a used phone with broken (but working) screen to get it very cheap.
4-5. I think is difficult to find one who does this. I couldn't do it in Nexus 5x (although i read it can be done) so i used a different approach :
2 Tasker scripts to watch if car mode is enabled or not.
-When android auto running, car mode is enabled automatically, tasker script1 run so do what you need then eg turn on Bluetooth, gps, normal battery mode etc..
-When android auto is off, car mode disabled automatically tasker script2 run so disable Bluetooth, GPS, enable battery light consumption mode, flight mode, etc.
This way nexus 5x (and probably most phones) loose 1-2% battery in standby mode per day, so you don't actually needs to power off phone, and it boots to android auto much faster (5 seconds in Nexus). Especially if you debloat phone. I have deleted (or freeze with titanium) most of android. Keep only what needed for android auto and mirroring to work. I did this not only for battery but also for speed.
2. As i wrote before, i have created a cable with a switch:
-when turn on switch phone connect to car usb for android auto, so android auto runs.
But i do have the problem of phone drain faster than charging. It depends of the car. If the usb for android auto charges slow, you can't do anything for this. I didn't have much problem because the battery still last for 6 hours continually.
-When turn off the switch, disconnect phone from car usb for android auto (so android auto stops in phone and in car), and connecting the phone to a 2nd usb of the car where i have a fast usb charger.
This way battery is always charged.
I use it more than 2 years this way, everything works fine.
But there is probably a better solution that i may try in future.
For understanding what i will write (i have created the cable 2 years ago so i dont remember exactly how), I'll post some info, and Google it for more:
A usb cable have 5 wires inside. 2 are for data, 2 for power +-, and 1 for grounding.
So you can create a cable which the 2 cables for +- will go to a fast usb charger. This way phone will always charge fast (faster than it drain) when car in on.
The other 2 wires and ground will go to the car usb for android auto.
You will have a Y cable with 3 usb: the 1st goes to phone, the 2nd go to the (fast) charger, the 3rd go to car usb for android auto.
I have try this and worked. You don't have to charge phone from the same usb which use android auto.
English is not my native language, i hope everyone who reads to understand what i write.
If i do this method I'll post the wiring.
This is my old video, i have change many things from then, I'll post another one some time.

(UPDATE: B.41 fixes battery and thermal issue) Bugs & Issues w/ Software

Let's face it. Everyone knows how hot garbage this update is. I've come across multiple issues here and there, and as realme claims "performance improvements" in the changelog, it has only brought, ironically, inferior performance. I made this post to highlight some of my complaints in regard to the update and hopefully realme should take account of:
- Worse battery life - I've maxed out at around 4 hours of SoT as opposed to 6 hours in the previous build
- Performance issues - As mentioned above, I've been facing worse performance and occasionally terrible RAM management (although I'm pretty sure it has already been bad in the first place lol)
- Heating issues - The phone gets a lot warmer now than usual, therefore contributing to the lag and thermal throttling. Even on casual use, the phone gets abnormally warm for some reason
- Connectivity issues - Sometimes I have to reset my WiFi since the connection keeps dropping off.
There are also a few minor issues irrelevant to the update, like some of my mp3's not being read in the music folder (although when I plug my device to my PC, it reads them fine). There was also a time in which YouTube video playback glitched the entire screen (no idea what caused this). These probably don't have anything to do with the update, but I hope realme fixes these soon.
Take into consideration that I have the exact same apps and setup since the last update. This isn't some app that started draining my battery. Also, my refresh rate has been set to Auto the entire time. Might try to use the phone in 60Hz to see any significant differences, idk. I've heard that setting it to 90Hz helps? Idk, all I know is that these issues are really something and that many people are experiencing the same. I just hope that realme pushes an update that addresses such problems (prob July update?)
B.41 UPDATE:
It has been a few days since B.41 and I can most certainly say that it fixed the battery and heat issues. My phone has been able to comfortably last more than 6 hours a charge (90%-20%) on regular use and boy have I missed that so much.
I don't really know what to do with this thread anymore since the problems I mentioned are no longer relevant as B.41 fixes almost all of them. Might just add some issues and inconveniences that still persist in the software.
The biggest problem is the battery life. It's ok when forcing 90Hz.
I Don't know when you updated ur phn. But as a Realme 6 User I have faced the same problm.. And I posted 5 or more times in realme community about those same issue on my ohone.. But they Didn't make any ficing update. So I remove some built in unusable app like App store, heytap, market etc. But problem not fixed. After 10 days I noticed the phone is performing normally and smoothly as it was before the update. Now all problem are gone. My suggestion is, bcz of realme bad management system their update needs long time to properly performing.. So just wait and you will see few days after, ur phn is back to pavilion.

And at this point of time there is no custom ROM for this device either which is sad
Battery life issue is faced by me as well. Max 4hours of battery life even on very normal usage.

I think there might be one available. I came across this video https://youtu.be/SFgV9wRKRTw. You can watch it for trying out a custom rom made for realme 6/6 pro.
Actually there are gsi ROMs available for this device and I have flashed havoc os on my realme 6,but the thing is that it's not stable at all and you may get bricked,at this point of time you can't even use realme flash tool to flash the stock firmware and it also doesn't support EDL mode.Even if custom ROMs do come mtk devices easily gets bricked,I wish if there was an anti brick preloader for realme 6 then we can flash anything without fear. Redmi note 8 pro users are lucky for having anti brick preloader and custom ROMs support

Edit: I checked out the video myself there is no custom rom available as of now.
My phone has just received the RMX2001_11_A.38 update, had anyone tried it yet?
I bought a Realme 6 recently, so following all these criticisms do you think I better not update the smartphone?

I just got the newest update, B.41. I'm still yet to test it out. So far my device doesn't heat as much anymore.

There are also a few minor issues, like some of my mp3's not being read in the music folder (although when I plug my device to my PC, it reads them fine). There was also a time in which YouTube video playback glitched the entire screen (no idea what caused this). These probably don't have anything to do with the update, but I hope realme fixes these soon.

I read this thread for the very first time and I dare say you are the cause of all these issues you have with your device.
All the way up until 11.B.38 I had 8+ hours of screen time in a single day, around 7 over the span of 2 days on a single charge. All on FORCED 90 Hz.
Performance is excellent, this is the first phone I ever had that hasn't had a single hiccup in performance.
When casually using it it's stone cold, get slightly warm on heavier games (Gwent works great and doesn't make the phone too warm).
Connectivity worked great, only recently it appears I've lost CA for some reason.
If your device gets warm when casually using it, drains your battery in an unreasonably short time, most likely you have stuff running in the background draining CPU power - or your phone has a faulty battery. The test is easy - charge the phone up, reset it to factory settings, let it boot up and don't touch it, don't even go through the wizard. 30 minutes later go through the setup wizard, if the phone gets warm during setup, the battery might be faulty.
The annoying stuff in software Realme doesn't want to fix are the random issues with the screen-off gestures and the transition to homescreen with 3rd party launchers.
But hey, at least the split screen is now working fine with Nova Launcher!

As I've mentioned in my post, I had almost the exact same set-up as before. The same apps, same launcher, same everything. It was only when I updated to B.37 that things went sorta downhill. I also heard other users experiencing similar things.
Also, I see that you mentioned B.38 and not B.37. You may have a different model than mine, though I'm not so sure about it.
I updated my phone to the latest B.41 update earlier today, and things look very promising now. So far I've gotten to about 7 hours of SoT and barely any overheating issues.
