Cracked Note 5 Screen. Anyone with experience replacing? - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How difficult would it be to replace? the lcd itself seems fine but from what ive seen on youtube, detaching the glass from the lcd looks like a big mess. However, replacing both the screen and lcd together (as one piece) seems to be expensive that i might as well take it to samsung or a specialized repair shop for barely $50 more.
Im curious if anyone has any experience replacing just one or the other? how difficult is it? I've been able to fix phones in the past but now all these new phones so thin they just hold together with mostly glue, seem a bit more trouble than theyre worth imo....

[Q] Touch Screen & LCD Screen Broken (Need replacement suggestions)

My HTC Hero has a broken touch screen and LCD screen.
Can anyone suggest a cheap place to get them from?
And if anyone is wondering how it broke, I ran it over with my van.
Not intentionally of course.
Phone is from Alltel so it would be $95 to claim it on insurance
Also does anyone have any suggestions what I can put on the screen until I can replace it? It's rough on the fingers to use because of the cracks.
EBAY
Yup eBay has every spare part you would want for your Hero. I just ordered a digitizer yesterday (thats your screen), and that all you need to replace if behind the broken digitizer is a clear picture on your lcd.
This has happened to me twice. I got replacement on ebay for 30 dollars. It includes the whole front panel, touch screen digitizer, and lcd screen. It took me 5 minutes to replace. Just a couple of screws and a connector. Easy Peasy!
I dropped my hero yesterday as well. There was no damage to the screen/ LCD but there are a few scratches to the body. Are there replacements for that as well?
Supposedly sprint will fix any physical damages to the phone, as long as it still works.
supposed to do it for $35 in store without the $7 protection plan.
http://bit.ly/g5RfAB < Goes to the repair part of sprint's website.
I haven't tried it, so let us know if they will fix it.
I was quoted $35 by two different sprint stores to replace my screen. Still haven't fixed it yet, it is only a small crack in the corner and doesn't bug me that much.

Put regular tape over it
http://cgi.ebay.com/HTC-HERO-OEM-LC...919428?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f057b8004
I bought that before..include LCD, Digitizer, and Front Bezel. The bezel was scuffed up and had a few nicks but the digitizer and LCD were in perfect condition.
Don't try that at home
Based on personal experience
I strongly advise against attempting a DIY screen replacement.
Here's my sad story:
1) I dropped my poor little hero, then managed to step on it screen down, completely scratching the entire screen surface.
2) I went on eBay and spent about $40 for a replacement screen/digitizer kit.
3) The kit arrived 10 days later. Very nice package - appeared to be high quality.
4) I followed the directions to the letter. (fwiw I'm generally pretty skilled at this sort of repair stuff, and have repaired other phones and computers with good results).
5) My little hero is no more. It works like crap. None of the buttons work correctly. The trackball no longer works consistently. It's essentially unusable (except maybe as a backup storage device).
If any good can come of this, perhaps it will be that others will read my sad tale and avoid a similar fate!

When you stepped on it it probably damaged the motherboard or some other part because the digitizer doesn't really have anything to do with the trackball.
You do have to make sure the trackball housing is inserted correctly in the new bezel. Also, do not overtighten the screws on the bottom or the buttons work wonky. I just tightened them a little, checked, and made sure I didn't over tighten.

Captivate digitizer replacement

hi,
I have a crack line on my Samsung Captivate screen and I've been researching on how to replace the front lens without replacing the entire LCD assembly because to be fair the LCD is still good and all that needs replacing is the front glass.
Anyone seen anything or know anything about disassembling the LCD module?
i believe its all one unit glued together. thats why none of the ATT boys have been able to remove or scratch off the ATT logo
75 to 139 bucks on ebay
but like glue can be seperated right? Like has anyone tried giving it the heatgun treatment? I'd do mine but I dont have a replacement yet so I don't dare try
not recommended, with that kind of heat the plastic wraps and it will not fit anymore, change the whole screen, its the easiest way
well... that pretty much kills it...... i'll most prob buy a replacement LCD. But I am genuinely curious about it and I guess when the new AMOLED arrives I guess I'll have something to play around with......
anyone tried dissolving the glue?
well I smashed my lens on front of my screen and I notice that they sell the lens only on ebay now, has anyone found a way to check the lens only yet?

TAB S2 9.7 with cracked glass but fully working screen/digitizer. Why,How

Hi everyone,
I have a relative with a TAB S2 9.7 that has a cracked screen. The user is quite disappointed with it since it wasn't dropped. She can't recall even hitting it against anything and wonders how it could have happened. The curious part is that she says the screen looked normal, but cracked when she put one of those pens with a soft rubber tip on it (she usually uses those to keep the screen free from smudges)
The screen has some spiderweb cracks centered in a point, so my theory is that perhaps she had it in a bag or something and pressure from a pointy item damaged it, slowly cracking util the light pressure from the pen made it obvious. It's always in a sleeve, but it's a fairly soft sleeve so maybe that was the case. The other possibility would me some sort of manufacturing defect making it crack, but I haven't heard of that before.
This is a person who doesn't have much money and tool really good care of the Tab, I've seen her handle the thing as if it was a precious item given the effort it took to buy it so I feel really bad about it. It's that look of disappointment of the kid who just dropped his icecream ball and cannot afford another.
The OLED panel seems to work perfectly, touch sensitivity is normal, etc. Seems to be just the thin top glass layer. I found the part for around 22 Eur, but installing seems complex. I'm sure I can't pull it off.
Anyone has any suggestions on how to have it fixed? Also, on how it could have happened without drops or obvious impacts? I was thinking about getting an S2 for myself now that prices are finally going down, but If I can't figure it out, perhaps I'll offer her a new one when I can... sigh...
Thanks
I'd just send it for repair especially if it still has warranty.
Even if it's not under warranty it may not be as expensive as you would think to repair.
Very little chance of repairing this successfully yourself unless you buy the whole lcd/touchscreen as a unit which would probably cost as much as getting it repaired.

In fact, you have to have a special "heat box" to soften the glue just to get the back off. That's why the first thing I did with mine was to get a GOOD screen protector. One costing over $20. NOT a cheap "film" protector. Depending upon how bad the glass is cracked, putting a good screen protector on even now, to keep the cracks from spreading, might make the tablet serviceable.
I've changed the glass digitizer on several tablet but wouldn't even attempt to on an S2.

Agreed, if it's still usable put a screen protector on it.
It's what I did for my 3 year Olds tablet which he has a habit of testing newton's law of gravity with.
Definitely go for repair. My S2 screen cracked when it was propped up by its case and fell back onto the kitchen worktop, so not even dropped. I suspect it wasn't their fault at all and a screen protector would have done nothing whatsoever to prevent it.

d802 glass panel replacement help

hi...
i have a d802 device with broken screen glass...
touch & gestures work... screen works... it only has a few cracks on it...
can i just replace the front glass (cheaper solution?) or must i replace the whole digitizer and front panel...
any suggestions on trusted online shops thazt sell genuine LG d802 parts?
thanks in advance
Digitizer and glass is a single unit, and is readily available on ebay (for cheap) so there is that. The thing is that it is next to impossible to separate the glass from the display itself, and without professional tools the result of the reassembly will be quite awful. The best would be to exchange the display assembly as a whole. This is actually done quite easily. Lots of guides are available online, which just makes the process even easier.
Also for where to get the displays. You can actually contact LG or one of their service providers to purchase the display assembly. This way you are completely sure to get a top quality product. This is a tad more expensive though.
Ebay is also another place to get displays, the quality varies greatly here (have gotten anything ranging from completely original to barely functioning knock off. )
Etradesupply is apparently the best place to get displays at the moment, as their S+ grade is comparable to the ones you get from LG

yes, i saw some youtube tutorials and removing glass from digitizer is a pain in the a$$, it can be done using hot air to melt the glue - but it's a time consuming process...
what interests me more is a whole screen section (glass+digitizer) and buying a proper genuine one for d802 (i think some people had issues with installing wrong panels from other variants to their d802 model)
thanks for your helpful answer :good:

The thing is that the D800 and Veriozon models (as I recall) uses different digitizers. The connectors for these should not physically be able to connect to the D802 motherboard.
But to be able to cure the optically clear glue used for displays you will not only need an uv light but also lots of practice. Air bubbles get caught under the glass way too easily for it to be viable.
One more thing to note. the LCD itself is too easy to bend. Any flex will destroy it. Should also note that I too have watched the video where someone separates the G2 glass from the LCD and have tried to follow along multiple times. Every time resulting the same way. LCD breakage. Both times the polarizing filter got unstuck. So if you really want to go this route, my advice would be to find a professional to do the job.
Recently I had same problem: cracked digitizer. After my experience - first trying to replace only digitizer - NOT GOOD. I had to buy a whole set - digitizer and LCD. Just pay attention to your type of LG G2 - you can find all the types. But I am not sure if you can find a genuine replacement. Usually they are substitute, with no logo. But everything works fine. Pay attention also to where and how the connectors are placed and the most important thing - after you took out the old LCD give it a good heat to the back of the battery pack because is stuck with strong biadhesives and try not to pry too much the battery.
I just replaced mine G2 D802 (from 2013) Lcd, you need to replace the whole thing (screen+lcd)I think, you can buy the Lcd from the Internet. I bought the lcd about $50 and got the shop to replace it for $6. Now my G2 is like new.

Nexus 6 Prototype | Anybody Buy A Display With Markings Etched in The Screen?

I just purchased one of these off Swappa for 60 bucks. I got too excited, I couldn't control myself, haha. The glass is cracked, and I'm contemplating trying to remedy that depending on potential usability. I remember sometime late last year that there were a whole bunch of displays for the prototype with the "Not for resale; property of Motorola" sold off on eBay; they're long gone by now since people bought them up thinking they'd work on the standard Nexus. But they discovered the display connectors are in slightly different places than their production unit; meaning they're not interchangeable and couldn't be used. If I can't find one of these displays, I'm expecting that I could just remove the glass and replace it with a standard one, but I'm HORRIFIED of potentially damaging the display itself since they're so fragile. It's horrifying because if it's damanged, that's it. It won't accept a production panel.
So I guess what I'm wanting to know is if anybody happens to know where I can get a hold of a replacement display for this phone at a decent price. As mentioned, the display works fine, but the glass is cracked. I'm not expecting to be able to use it since these phones seem to be finicky, so I'm not interested in dumping any huge amount of money into it; I'm just exploring my options on restoring it. If I can happen to use it for personal use, that'd be great; but i'm not holding my breath haha.
Slightly OT, but if you have a prototype model, I wonder if it also has the internal connector for the fingerprint reader. That would be interesting to find out.
Screens pls, btw i found 1 long time ago in eBay, Google buy then back for mich money

i use these over screen protectors. the are big enough to fit phone screens and do a nice job with glare from light while keeping the display to color. they scuff up (like all do) but the......gel? like texture will smooth back out instead of removing the visibility. there are 2 draw backs....they add a soft prism texture due to the quality on the glue involved as well as soft dots from the high quality adherence. the more it warms the softer the dots appear. all said and done, i have put this laminate on cracked screens with a fair solution. no shelling out for the lcd as well as not risking a lcd for a $25 dollar piece of glass

I definitely appreciate the suggestion, but I'm specifically looking for input on where I can get replacement screens. I don't mind cracks in screens personally (swappa boneyard represeeeeent! lolol), but with my last N6 screen cracking from compromised glass up top, I'm paranoid of any use doing the same to the prototype display. I want to either use it or sell it, and as long as the glass is broken I can't really do either :crying:
Finding a prototype display is going to be virtually impossible due to ridiculously limited quantities, and replacing it with a production model version - if that's even doable - would kill any value the prototype might still have. If you're looking to use it, you're probably going to have to fish for a production screen and hope Motorola didn't make any changes between the prototype and production model.

I'm asking myself exactly the same thing..
Then, do it have it or not ??
If the touchscreen isn't broken, you can change the gorilla glass only, by yourself. It must be standart size. (using heatgun and being tricky)
If it is, you can go to Shenzen in China, or maybe try to adapt the connector (they might have taken the same components but in a small different way, connector lenght/position)

You're better give the device to a repair technician with good skills. I'm a technician and the process to separate the glass from displays is not diy . It's really hard to be done correctly, and with an oled screen is even harder

I'd be interested in a Prototype Nexus 6 in any shape.
Heck, if you're interested in selling yours, I'd be interested (just PM me if).

I don't know him, he may be more minutious than you, idk. Just giving a possibility, he will judge if he's able to do it himself..

I replied you and him only to tell that it's really hard , only to let you know and to let him know before he tries to order the glass, try to separate that from display and make it worse . Oled displays goes completely black if broken ,instead of LCD that stay alive .
I know procuring one is next to impossible. The reason I asked is because I had seen a large batch of them sold on eBay sometime last year. So people expecting them to work for their regular Nexus phones (they don't; ribbons are slightly different) bought them and ended up not being able to use them. A shot in the dark for sure, haha. Otherwise I have replacement production glass, LOCA, and a plate and wire to do the job properly, it's just as all stated in the original post: failure is an absolute game over. A screen with cracked glass is much more functional than a dead screen with good glass, you know?
