I'm thinking about swimming with a Z1. Am I crazy? - Xperia Z1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been looking for a waterproof listening solution to use 3-4x a week for exercise-related swimming. I really hate Apple products and don't want anything to do with them, so my options are little less abundant. I had the idea of using a Sony Xperia phone and just leaving it in airplane mode as a music player. I see they go on feeBay for $75+ or so and I would happily use one of these as a dedicated music player. I have seen some videos where people have taken these swimming, but I can't find any where people are listening to music underwater. Is this possible? If so, does anybody here have experience with this? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a pair of underwater audio headphones
http://www.underwateraudio.com/waterproof-headphones-short-cord-swimbuds/

Z1 phone may get water damage. Can't guarantee its water proof.

@oRAirwolf - well, probably depends where you would keep the phone, but it's IMO pretty bad idea, got mine water damaged this way...

I decided to get a waterproof arm band and I am going to try my Sandisk Sansa Clip as an audio player. It may be too thick, in which case, I am going to get a FiiO M3 or X1. Anything but Apple...

well as long as your phone is not used and you brought it as well is if the screen or anything hasn't been repaired before then MAYBE its ok, also the factory warranty is done for all xperia Z1's so dont expect sony to back you up. but remember, just because the company says its waterproof dont go pushing your luck. There was a law suit some time back and sony had to rename it it water "resistant" so yea things to consider.

Speaker Issues

So...... the internal speakers on the nexus 7 are not great. Well, IS not great. It's not even stereo with only one at the bottom making watching movies on landscape makes the sound comes only from left or right.
but anybody else experiencing cracking/breaking/distorted audio if the volume is higher than 75%?
ive never used it more than 50% coz i almost always use it at home and i have a 2-mth old baby. but yesterday i'd like to show my wife how cool the free Transformers movie is and i cranked the volume up just to be horrified by the distorted sound, not unlike coming from a cheap $10 speakers.
should i return it?
should i ignore it and just keep it under 50% for movies or plug in a nice dock/speakers?
should i attempt to fix it? :silly:
i just fear returning it as everything else with the tablet is great, and with the amount of threads here with faulty Nexus, i felt like im risking it too much.

If you haven't shipped it off yet, use your fingernails or a guitar pick or something otherwise soft (not metal), thin, and flat, and open the case. Not sure if there's a specific place that's easier, I just went around and around until I got it to pop. Look at the FixIt breakdown if you want to see more details. It took about 3 minutes once I got it started, and that was taking my time. It's a little more firm than a phone battery cover, but not by much.
Once you get the back off, figure out which speaker is "blown" and lightly press into it. If it's "crunchy" feeling, gently work it around the edges with your finger until it either pops in place or stops "crunching". I went around the edges a few times just in case.
Been a week and my N7 sounds fine again. I have the full expectation that this isn't fixed and it'll recur, but I also doubt it's fixed in any newer hardware either, so why go through the trouble of replacing the device.

Looks like Noozy got taken down because it was a modified redistribution of an older build of ZPlayer, without permission. Not sure if that's where Rewire came from too or not, but maybe the whole developer got kicked off.
Edit: Rewire seems to be the part they made themselves which they added onto the old ZPlayer code to make Noozy ("New Z" ), so it should be safe to repost. Attached as well are my Equalizer settings which seemed to make the most difference, removing the rumbling/distortion almost completely.
My settings are as follows: XLimiter enabled, compression strength "Hard"; Psychoacoustic disabled; X-EQ enabled, frequencies at -1.0, -2.5, -5.5, -2.5, -1.0 (also attached); VE-Engine disabled; Logicsurround ES enabled, room size "Studio".
Hope this helps some people!

Find someone in Ottawa on Red Flag Deals forums who bought an N7 and are returning it for defective screen issues.
Meet up with them, buy them lunch, and swap over the speakers.
PS. my audio is fine at 100%, but volume isn't exactly overpowering. In fact, there are times I have trouble hearing a person over Skype. I haven't tried Transformers, yet.

I have the same problem. I ordered a replacement which will arrive tomorrow. If the replacement has any other issues that are worse than the crackling speaker then the replacement goes back and I keep my first Nexus 7. I might order another replacement or get my N7 just repaired after the return time expires.

i have this same issue now with the cracking distorted sounds on max volume. the odd part is it just started happening on mine. see i've had the N7 since 7/18 and the sound was pure till yesterday. i thought it was or is a issue with the new kernels i have been flashing for game performance. if your N7 can be returned do it imo you have nothing to lose. N7 for the price is one bad ass tablet mate. add a nice set of ear buds and go into the music player settings under equalizer options are 3d, bass boost, 5 band eq. play with those and the N7 with the buds is going to rock playing games and watching movies. since you are going to have a clean rom root that N7 for the tablet ui and then flash it with a custom kernel to release it's true gaming power... nova 3, spiderman, mc3 are buttery smooth with the gpu set at 500

super good news, bro!
yeah i emailed Google last week and last night they send me the instructions for a replacement. i requested one, should be shipped under a week, and i got 21 days to return mine to Toronto (which is 2-3days max on UPS standard).
so hopefully the new one arrives first so i can test it before i ship mine back.
yeah still abit reluctant with the whole process since EVERYTHING ELSE about my N7 is perfect. i'd rather deal with bad speakers at loud volume than cracking screen, dead pixels, or flickering.......
I had to RMA mine for the speaker issue as well.
Turns out, the speaker is actually good, but there's a loose connection in there somewhere. How I could tell was, if I held my tablet from the bottom, the speaker would sound like it was rattling/distorted/blown. Once I removed my hand, it was fine. Watching youtube videos and moving my hand up and down the back of the tablet would result in static noises that mirrored the movement of my hand.
When I called Google, this was a known issue on some units and they'll have no problem sending you out a new one.
God damnit, last night my speakers started rattling and now they sound like hell all the time if the volume is up at all. I believe it started when my volume got turned up too loud and a loud notification played.
So are the speakers blowing, or what's going on here? Anyone know?
Man, I have the exact OPPOSITE issue. I just bought a Nexus 7 today and my internal speaker is EXTREMELY quiet. I can barely hear it in a completely quiet room. I'd hate to RMA it since I don't seem to have any other issues with it. I tried volume+ and all it did was add a little crackling, it didn't boost the volume at all. I haven't read anything about this issue so I'm thinking defect, but if anybody has any input I would love to hear it.
Well, I listened to some left/right test sounds and determined only my left speaker was rattling, right sounded fine. Popped the back off, and the left speaker (right from the back side, of course) was different feeling. It was looser, moved more, and was "crunchy sounding". I pushed on it experimenting a bit and it popped, then it felt like the right one. I prodded a bit more, felt the same, so I tried music.
Sounds... Better. Not perfect. Still sounds a little rattly, but might be my imagination, I'll have to listen closer later. But from this, it seems like maybe the "cone" is detaching or popping off?
I wonder what it looks like inside the speakers. I did not remove anything except the back of the N7, not the speakers, nor their little fabric covers. If it happens again, I might look further.

Click on settings and then on sounds. the main volume box will pop up for you. You will see three volume bars just make sure there all the way over to the right. If your volume is still real low return your N7 for one without a speaker defect.

I was checking out a friends N7 that just started having the speaker issue. I installed Poweramp and found the problem on the distortion. Using the balance feature only the left speaker was distorting with the right side getting very little power. How to reset the sound so both channels equal out I bet would fix the crackling sound problem. Any ideas or settings we can adjust?

I've had six N7's (yes, six, and each and every one had a significant defect), and they all had at best what I would characterize as low volume. And the ones that went a little louder have been distorted. I've finally settle on a unit that doesn't seem to have any issues other than minor screen lift and crappy speakers, and I'm keeping it.
I figured, the bottom line is that I don't use the external speakers for anything but gaming and the occasional YouTube video. If I'm watching video or listening to music on this device, I use headphones anyways. And, when I'm watching a video in some situation where I want to use external speakers, I'm using my iPad.
Short answer to your question: yes, I've had N7's with extremely low volume. Personally, I wouldn't replace it for that, because at this point the odds of getting a unit with a worse problem remain too high (at least in my experience).
I had to return my first N7 because of the distorted speaker over 50% volume issue. I'm on my second N7 now and its been great so far.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
When I first got my nexus I tested the speakers by watching transformers. I was amazed. It was quite loud and distortion free. The next day I got a notification and all I heard was almost pure crackling. And from then on its been horrible. I use external speakers or headphones for everything but when im not using those, its very annoying. I'm not returning it because otherwise, its flawless.

Yeah I had the same issue. It started yesterday couldn't go over 50% so I ordered a replacement . Process is really painless it will come in two businesses days and I get to keep them told one till then. Just flash the stock image band send at back.
just FYI, my crackling one was C60. got the new one which is C70 and it was perfect. loud enough and doesn't crack. no distortion.
I got my replacement for my 8 GB and went to the 16 GB this time from office depot. First one froze up and started having audio distortion, so far this one is doing great but only one day in. It is a c60 so hopefully that theory is wrong...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
I had my Nexus 7 16GB for exactly one month now and until today it was perfect. This morning I noticed that the speakers sounded "blown". I made sure it wasn't the file I was playing as it played fine on other devices and ALL files sounded blown on the Nexus.
MicroCenter only covers it for the first 15 days so my only option was to call ASUS. After doing a factory reset it still had the problem so now I'm sending it to ASUS. Hopefully they will either fix or replace it.
This really sucks because up until this point I really loved the device. Oh and also in case anyone else is sending it to ASUS, be aware that ASUS will NOT send you anything. You as the customer is responsible for packaging AND shipping costs. I understand the profit margin on Nexus 7 is low but this is like rubbing salt into your wound.

Looking for a Stereo BT headset for Workout and Movies

I am looking for some help. Now that I have a tablet and I am trying to find a good BT stereo headset for it. I am going to mostly use the headset for listening to my tablet for movies and doing items on my tablet where I do not want to bug my wife and others.
I am also going to want to use it with my phone when I am working out or working on items where a tablet is just too big to have around. I went to Best Buy and they stated to use the Jaybird ones. They are going to take a large chunk out of my wallet. I am trying to find what else is out there and would have good sound quality and bass for movies but can take getting all sweating in a work out.
Thank you for any help or tips on this. Just kind of stuck right now.
You can also look at getting a receiver that has a headphone jack and use the headphone of choice.

Might have to look into that. Thanks
Motorola has some water resistant ones but they are trash. Go with the jaybirds. I have several friends with them and they work great, and don't short out.
I have a Sony mw600 receiver that works pretty well. And with a standard 3.5 mm jack you can use any headset you want.
It's not as "clean" as a pure bt headset, but it's a lot more flexible. It has fm radio as well, a nice addition.
The only downside I found is the touch/pressure/whatever sensitive volume slider is a bit fiddly.
There is supposedly a newer version out, mw600s, but no idea about the changes and/or improvements.

I've used the Motorola S9 and now the S10 bluetooth stereo headsets. The S9 I sent back at least 4 times because sweat gets into the buttons and when you press up or down on them it sticks the contact and acts as if you are holding it down. I finally got out of the warranty period and found that if I put them on the airconditioner return (on the floor) for a few days they work fine. I have to say that the S10 has not had that problem. In both cases, the "in ear" nature of the S9 and S10 do not fit me well. Of course fit is highly subjective so take it for what it's worth.
The S9 had better sound to me than the S10 and was easier to control (when there wasn't sweat behind the buttons). On the S10 I have to really press the buttons hard to activate them. The pads on the end of each side on the S10 came off in the first week. They were stuck on with what is essentially double sided tape. I tried to glue one back on with super glue which just hardened the semi-soft pad into a wrinkled mess. I used a dremel with an abrasive buffer tip to smooth it down.
Finally, the soft ear tips on the S10 come off almost every time I take the headset off. Of course the headset is useless if you loose the tips...well, it works, but is pretty uncomfortable in your ears. The one good experience was that I called Motorola and they sent me a bag of the tips for free. So now I have (I think) 6 pairs, two each of each size. No hassle from customer service. I was ready to pay something, but they just sent them for free.
I'm in the market for some new stereo headphones for the gym. They must be bluetooth, take calls, and have controls on them. The problem is that it's an expensive game of hit or miss on fit and function although I can return them to BestBuy if needed.
It might seem that I'm down on the S9 and S10. In general, I like the way they fit around my neck, I just wish they would nail it instead of staying at about 80%.
Just my 2 cents.
I have a Sennheiser pxc 310, it's a very good device, but the big problem with bluetooth, movie and nexus 7, is the latency between sound and pictures.
I have the galaxy note 2 and there is no such problem, maybe the apt-x codec solve the problem.
Give the LG HBS-700 a shot. I use them for everything from work, to tv, to working out at the gym.
They sound decent and have a decent battery life.
My only gripe with them is that they slip a little when on the bench.

I'm using the LG HBS700 with So Slim Rom and the sound/video is very laggy and choppy over BT. Even when I play local files or ones over the network. I even tried watching a movie on Netflix. I have this problem on the stock ROM, if you do some searching apparently it's a common bug introduced recently.
It's pretty disappointing as I got a Jabra clip to make listening while on the treadmill easier and it's just skippy as hell.

Samsung HS330

So after watching a couple of GS4 unboxing videos, I've become pretty interested in the included earphones which, as far as I've read, will be available separately for around $30.
Now I'm far from an audiophile but I would still like some decent earphones to use. I was planning to buy myself a pair of these but since the HS330s have volume control on the in-line remote, I thought they might be better.
Since real-world testing is somewhat out of the question at this point, based on specs alone, which of the two do you guys think should have better sound quality?

I was wondering the same thing after reading this review. What got me was this: They offer better bass than just about any other pair of headphones you can find in a smartphone's retail package, although they probably won't fully replace any high-end aftermarket earphones, if you happen to have those. I was looking for something new so that I could retire my current headphones. So I collected an S4 for my mom today and tested out the earphones.
I was not impressed at all. I don't know what bass they are talking about. The max volume from them is also quite low.
To be fair, all the earphones that come with the phones I get normally stay in the box untouched. So I can't say how they fared against other headsets which come in the retail packaging.
I have a 10yr old pair of Sony MDR-EX70LP Fontopia Headphones which even went through a wash cycle and they totally blew the HS330s out of the water in every sound aspect. (I am not an audiophile, so I can't go into lots of detail, but they are much louder, have much deeper and louder bass and are clear and crisp. All the other sounds are there too and sound just as good. )
I don't know if this a an apples to apples comparison, but take it as my 2c.

This is really helpful. Thanks a lot. Even though I know I can get better, I'm actually content with the earphones that came with my Note 2. So if the S4 ones are at least as good as that, I'll probably buy them still. But if they're actually a downgrade then screw that, haha.

They're finally on Ebay. This is the cheapest of two that I found, at around 27 dollars or so: http://www.ebay.com/itm/400504212596
Btw, the Sony MH1C would be a better buy, since it's one of the best earphones you can buy that has functioning buttons for Android devices.

REVIEW samDock the Apple to Android converter cable with VIDEO SLIDESHOW!

Today we’re looking at the samDock
Click here to see the original review and you'll also find links to purchase.
The samDock is an adapter cable that let's you use Samsung's latest Android phones like the Note 2 with Apple's 30 pin connector to charge or play audio.
Main advantage: affordable, long length, works by simply plugging it in
Main concern: NONE
Unique features: You can use android devices on Apple docks!!!
I've personally wanted a product like this for years, but it just didn't exist. It seems so simple, there are adapters for everything why not one that adapts Apple's useless proprietary connector to work with the much more universal micro USB standard? The good news is that the wait is over, the bad news is that most people don't care at this point unfortunately. We've seen the wide scale adoption of Bluetooth and things like DLNA, Wifi Direct, and mirrorlink. That means that Apple's stranglehold on the accessory market gets weaker and weaker by the day. For a time, it was the law of the land that all of the coolest docking solutions were Apple exclusive. That's just where the money was, so that's where the effort went.
Nowadays wires are a nuisance and wireless is nearly standard. Bluetooth is everywhere and it's in everything. The great news for those of you that dropped your hard earned money on some sort of Apple capable dock is that this is an extremely affordable solution. If you need to use your Note 2 or most any other Galaxy device with an Apple 30 pin dock it's as simple as plugging this wire in. For some phones that's all it takes and you're done. Others will have to go into your settings and enable Audio Output Mode. You'll just check the box that says, "use external speakers when device is docked.” That's all it takes though. Docks big and small, portable or built in. You'll pass through high quality audio and you even retain the ability to charge your devices.
The cable itself is 24” long, 2 feet is long enough to do plenty without feeling tethered to a dock. It comes in black instead of the apple standard white which is a nice little touch of defiance. It worked with every dock that I tested as well as simply attaching it to an apple charging cable. It will work with the Galaxy S 3 and 4 as well as the Note 1 and 2.
Thank you again to CableJive for supplying their product for review.
Alternatives: none that I've seen
How much: 24.95 each at CableJive.com
Is it worth buying: For under thirty dollars, it's worth buying it to just throw it in your bag on the off chance that you find yourself at a friend's house and you need to arrange some last minute karaoke with an iPod alarm clock.

Man, please take this as useful constructive advice. Ditch that music that seems to be your trademark.
It's awful and annoying. 10 seconds in on both of your videos and I'm rushing to close the window.
The product isn't getting seen if I'm closing the window because of the 'cute' music.

agreed! 100%!
Another point, people have invested a lot of money into Apple accessories and can take advantage of using it with android phone. But the whole beauty of apple gadgets was docking integration without any need for cables or devices laying on the side. This solution does work, but you kill the look of the setup by not being able to dock your smartphone.

are you guys talking about the very start of every video? The opening with the choir type voices? That's from an everclear song.
Otherwise, for every product reviewed, I pick a song that has something to do with the product or it's name. It's just a fun little touch. So this is the samDOCK so the song is hickory dickory DOCK, which is a child's nursery rhyme. It's just a goofy little added touch and you can always mute and just look at the pictures if the music is bugging you. I was this close to doing a death metal cover of hickory dickory dock but I couldn't find a clear enough recording.
now that I think of it there were a bit of children's songs, they just fit really well. I reviewed a wireless charging dock the other day and I used the song, "I've got no strings" from Pinocchio. "I've got no strings, to hold me down" no wires, wireless charging, you get it. Just a fun little touch.
They aren't always kids songs.
Lol I really think everyone is giving you a hard time because that zip thing you reviewed was just stupid.
I mean really guys no one is forcing you to watch the slideshow, you can always mute and listen to whatever you want if you want to setethe pictures.

I'm interested at this. Can you still use the remote on Bose sound dock to skip and control volumes?

Not trying to give you a hard time by any means, it's honestly meant as constructive criticism! I am truthfully trying to be helpful, nothing else! You may not care though, and if what your doing is working for you then I suppose there's no need to change it. I just think your videos would be more professional without some of the music in them, that's all. I did watch many of your YouTube videos! Trying to help out because the more views the better for you. Like the NeatDesk Scanner, that song is just awful! Whether it goes with the product being reviewed or not, I find it very annoying. For the video showing the Otterbox Defender and Seidio Convert cases for the Note 2, I actually really like the song choice! That said though, I still think the video would appear more professional with out the song. Now for the Phillips Hue video, that's a great song choice!! No, not something that I would listen to in my car, but it's like elevator music, simple music with no lyrics. That is very fitting for your videos, and doesn't distract attention from the video whatsoever!! See, I'm not basing this off of what I like or want to hear, just telling you what I think comes off as being more professional. Of course, this is just my opinion. You may not even care what I think or what I have to say. I'm just trying to give you a viewer's perspective, that's all.
Now on to this product! This is something I really need!! My tool chest/box has a CD player and 2 6x9 speakers built in to it! This was one of the selling points to me, not the only one as this tool chest has many unique features not found in any other tool chest, but one of the selling points nonetheless. Coming out of a little slot in the top area of the tool chest/box once the lid has been opened, there is a cable that is tied in to the stereo system in the tool chest. It has an Apple connection on the end of it . Isn't that big of deal, as the CD player also has a 3.5 mm auxiliary jack on it, so I can just use that. I would like to be able to shut the little door that covers the CD player while I'm working though (also has a remote for it), and can't do that with an auxiliary cable sticking out. I do have a 4th Gen iPod Touch 32GB. The remote also allows me to skip songs when it's hooked up through the Apple cable, which is a very nice function!! Obviously the remote can't do anything with my phone, except adjust volume, when it's hooked up through the auxiliary cable. With this adapter/converter you posted here, it would give me the same functionality of my phone as I currently have with my iPod!!
Honestly, using my iPod in the tool chest is basically the only reason I haven't sold it yet! Getting this adapter would be awesome for me! Thank you for taking the time to make this review, and especially for sharing it with this community!! It's greatly appreciated!!

Glad I dont own any Apple docks!
Well,
Got one today and I've now tried 3 docks and it works on none. I've flashed back to stock ROM in case it wasn't compatible with ProBAM.
Not having a bit of it. Money down the drain.

We gave feedback to hopefully help you improve the reception of your videos.
If you don't want the feedback or use it in anyway, don't expect fanfare and trumpets for future works.
But nah, listen to the guy that didn't bother to watch or even attempt to watch your work.
Best of luck amigo.

I like to pick out a song that hints to the product in a some way. I don't give hints in the description and sometimes it's harder to figure out why I'd choose a certain song. It's a little side game and people have contacted me saying that it makes them happy to figure it out. I could just find generic background music, but I'm trying to put in a bit more effort than that. Please mute it if it upsets you.
I've seen some adapters similar to this on ebay for cheap. Not sure if they'll allow data(music is the only thing I want) to pass through though. Anyone try one of the adaptors from ebay or similar? Less than $10, so they're super cheap, but even still I don't wanna through ANY money at them if they'll only charge...

Hi
I'm thinking about creating something along the lines of Grace Digital GDI GSD8200 - in my option would be - (Bose sounddock => cablejive /samDock/ => iGRIP Universal Micro USB Charging Dock ) - mounted on the top of my Bose and use it for my Samsung Galaxy phone
My question is - if micro usb plug from samDock will work with the iGRIP charging dock ? (charging and sound signal) or any micro usb charging dock

Or any charging docs ?

[Q] Weird buzzing and lack of bass

Hi,
i'm using my new xperia z1 with these headphones http://www.amazon.com/Sony-MDREX58V...F8&qid=1386837991&sr=1-8&keywords=sony+mdr-ex
and the sound is clear, but outside i can barely hear any bass. I'm not sure if my earbuds are too small or the phone has issues. Comfortable volume is 50% which seems too much for such little volume.
Also sometimes when i use headphones with Music Unlimited and Walkman i get some weird buzzing, it sounds like electrical current, its more of a crackle than a buzz. usually if i slightly unplug the headphones it stops or if i restart the music app a couple of times.
Once again, i'm very OCD and this is pissing me off. Maybe some of you have some ideas.
Thanks.
Try using poweramp app.

Let me help you understand, Mr. Aggressive. In Denmark, with telenor you don't get headphones in the box. Because these things are region and carrier specific.

Sorry Mrs. Delicate, where I was Aggressive? You should go and ask or buy the original Headphones for the Z1, the same Headphones which come with Z1 in the box. If you buy that Headphones you will solve all the problems, even if you use some kind of App you will never reach the good sound.
And you will thank me a lot.

Actually if you read around people complain about the same issues with the box headphones. Also, if you keep digging you will see that officially they only support maybe 6 Sony headphones. So i'm sorry to say it won't solve all my problems. Not to mention that those headphones are average at best. They are not god-mode audio, not by a long shot. Thanks for your condescending replies, but unfortunately it won't help me. Next time try giving a competent reply or just not replying.
Close thread. I've figured all this out 10 minutes after opening this thread and I know what I need to do.
