So what's the best way to flash a update and not lose data? If it's just a security update and not an actual version difference, what's the best way to do this and not lose data? Keep in mind, my device is unencrypted. I was thinking flashing everything except userdata, and then booting into TWRP straight away and flashing a kernel before first boot, would this work?

This is how I do it:
Copy/download new zip with prerooted lite stock rom of Danvdh to internal storage.
Boot Twrp-recovery.
Wipe system partition and caches
Flash new rom (zip)
Twrp file manager - restore layers from back up.
Reboot

So it's easier to just use the zip rather than flash with fastboot?

Yes, and I only backup the data partition and recovery on the phone.
Till now I think the method is comfortable and faster for the monthly updates. Everything that's needed is on the phone.
When there is a complete new Android, like N,
it could be different. Especially when kernel, bootloader and radio are new. We need a modded kernel that does not forces encryption.

Is it possible that there will be no wipe update 5.1 ZIP with no encryption? Works like OTA.
I'd like to update from 5.0.1 (no force encryption) to 5.1 without loosing my data. The best for me is zip for TWRP
Well if backup everything in twrp to an external flash drive then it shouldn't be an issue. I know people have side loaded the OTA via ADB but it hasn't been working for everyone. You obviously can't take a normal OTA if you are rooted so you could try that. Alternatively I would download Parcel if you have root and backup all of your apps and data for each one that you don't want to lose then transfer it to an external drive so you don't lose it when flashing the updated images. From here you can install 5.1 and then simply restore all of your missing apps and data using Parcel. It works really well and much better than TiBu for restoring data in apps. I use both TiBu and Parcel for different things. The above is only if you can't find any alternative ways to get it loaded in TWRP
There's a stock based ROM in dev forum. Flash that followed immediately (without booting) a kernel with no force encryption such as elementalx and you'll be good.
Or just fastboot flash a system image followed by immediately boot into recovery, flash kernel and SuperSU

Hi Nexus 6 Community
Im new to own a Nexus 6 but Im an "enthusiastic flasher" per say. I've being looking around with no luck so I was hopping someone will point me to the right direction:
Usually whenever I flash anything on my previous phones I like to flash TWRP again in case of boot loops or something flashing bad that could delete or corrupt my custom recovery. I'm rooted and installed the latest TWRP through fastboot, but as I previously said, I would like to have a flashable zip to ensure my recovery will be installed and have a higher chance of not being locked out of my phone.
Or I'd notice you can flash images through TWRP, will this re-install my recovery using the TWRP .img file?
I really appreciate all for your help, thanks
Once you boot into twrp for the first time it patches /system to prevent the stock rom from replacing it unless you choose the "keep system mounted as read-only." This option is only offered to you if you boot into twrp with an untouched /system. And as for worrying about being locked out of your phone, as long as you have an unlocked bootloader you can always use a google factory image to get back to stock w/o a custom recovery.
I'd assume no one's made a flashable zip for twrp because reflashing it wouldn't accomplish much of anything if you already have twrp to flash it in.
I'm not very into phones, but I wanted to make my HTC to wake by double tapping the screen. I've learned that to be able to do that, I have to use a custom kernel, like Bulletproof, and to install a custom kernel, I must first unlock my bootloader (which I've managed to do so on htcdev.com), and then flash TWRP on my phone. There wasn't any problem flashing TWRP, my phone worked just fine. But then I installed Bulletproof kernel on my phone, rebooted it, and after the HTC logo my phone just resets, and goes into recovery mode (TWRP). I've tried installing other kernel, called ElementalX, but the problem is the same. I've also tried this http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one/orig-development/kernel-stock-reset-kernel-m7-gpe-t2963290 guide to install stock kernel, but after booting it just shows the htc logo and does nothing else. My phone was running Lollipop 5.0.1.
Please help! And sorry for my bad English.
You're on official stock 5.0.2? how did you install the custom kernel? I installed elementalx when I was on nusenseven sense 7 ROM and I didn't have any problems. Did you flash the right zip file for your Android version and then wipe cash and dalvik/ART cash?
What version of twrp are you on? I recommend flashing twrp 3.0.0
Did you make a full nandroid backup using the custom recovery before you flashed the kernel? If yes just restore it.
If no, try wiping cash and dalvik/art cash then reboot. If that doesn't work I'd flash the latest twrp then copy your valuable files from your phone to a USB using twrp's native file manager because you'll probably have to wipe everything in order to fix your phone.
If non of the above works, go to fastboot and type fastboot getvar all. Then post the result here after deleting your imei and serial No.

Probably flashed the wrong version for his rom version, like you suggested. Most kernel issues can easily be solved simply by flashing back the stock kernel, no need to restart from scratch. If he did a backup, simply restore the boot partition, wipe caches and reboot

Unlocking bootloader always erases Data Partition. First check that yours one is unlocked or not, not most devices are come locked. Unlocking will take time as Xiaomi gives you permission to unlock by their own software.
Make a backup, get all your data off then root it. I'm not entirely sure if you can unlock without erasing, but you should never be in a position where you can't afford to reinstall your applications.
This is why it is always best to get twrp on your phone asap so you can back up it.
No, unlocking bootloader doesn't wipes data but you must backup everything just in case anything goes wrong.
it is always recommended to backup everything when flashing ROM, kernel, mod, zip, flashing rom via fastboot method and recovery. in short you should backup everything in all this cases.

Actually I know most part and have already done getting permission but this was just a quick question as that's my sister's device and she won't accept its data being erased still thanks for your quick answer...
And by the way that device's bootloader is locked I have checked it.

Yes i have flashed recovery and roms i always do backup important thing and i take screenshot of installed apps before making any changes and save them to pc or to cloud storage.
there was issue i had was when i flashed TWRP 3.2.1.0 via adb i do not why but it asked me for password i didn't know to password so i had to wipe everything including internal storage and data.
latest twrp is must which is TWRP 3.2.1.0 in order to flash Oreo based ROM.
i was using TWRP 3.0.2-0 before and i had no issue with this recovery i has flashed several nougat roms on this recovery even have upgraded and downgraded from miui9 to miui 8 everything worked perfectly.
i don't know why but i wasn't able to flash any marshmallow based or nougat based roms on TWRP 3.2.1.0 recovery.
yes i did lose data when upgrading from TWRP 3.0.2-0 to TWRP 3.2.1.0 but i had done backup so no issues.
i would highly recommend you to do backup if you are making any changes in your device.

Thanks bro
you need to install stock rom after unlocking
Unlocking Xiaomi Redmi4x santoni bootloader doesn't delete the data partition, but after unlocking the bootloader your phone won't boot, you need to install the same stock rom it was on phone previously.
Download MIUI Stock ROMs (if you didn't make OTA update from MIUI, check Older versions and download the correct ROM)
You can copy the ROM image to phone before unlocking or if you have already unlocked and stuck in boot, you can copy the ROM to an USB flash drive.
You need ADB installed on your PC.
Download the TWRP for Xiaomi Redmi 4X image.
If you want to restore the existing state of your phone, you need to make a backup of the data partition.
Press Volume Down + Power until phone gets in FASTBOOT.
Connect phone to PC with USB cable.
From PC command prompt type the command: fastboot.exe boot twrp-3.2.1-0-santoni.img
TWRP will start on your phone, you can backup all of the partitions, but you need only the data partition to restore.
Now Install the stock rom (you can select USB OTG if ROM is on USB drive), then RESTORE the backed up DATA partition only.
I've read a couple of threads about this matter and it seems that I have to wipe the phone anyways because of installing TWRP?
I want to root only for one reason, to recover very important camera videos I accidentally deleted. And I only know one way to recover them and it requires rooting.
So If rooting requires full data wipe, will I still be able to recover my videos?
maybe If I backed up everything on the phone this will increase the chance, or once I do the full data wipe there will be no way to get the videos back.
Thanks.
I think you have misunderstood a few things.
TWRP is a custom recovery. When you flash TWRP, you change the layout of a small dedicated "room" in your device, which has nothing to do with your data, which sits in a different room.
You wont be able to flash TWRP without having OEM Unlock available.
The moment you have it available, and you flash TWRP, you need to boot directly to TWRP after the flash, meaning, the system cannot start as it will sense the change, and flash a package here that deletes a few files that will take the phones ability to sense the changes.
After that, you flash the Magisk package, which gives you root, and preferably, wipe "cache rooms", which none of this affect your data and pictures you want to save.

are you sure about that ?
i have note 8 and i'm thinking to root it using magsik and twrp , but i'm afraid it wipes my internal data?
Any guide I have seen indicates that the mere unlocking of the bootloader requires a wipe.
