Trouble accessing specific site, regardless of browser of device (through hotspot) - Verizon Motorola Droid Turbo Q&A, Help & Troublesh

Hey all - really scratching my head here. For the last two weeks, access to www.phantompilots.com has been really terrible for me *on my phone*, or any device connected through it's hotspot. Occasionally the site will work flawlessly for 30 seconds, but usually, each time I click a link, it will hang at 10% and take maybe 2-3 minutes to load fully, if at all. Nobody else on the site is having trouble, and if I use a different wifi connection, it works like a charm. This happens regardless of browser on my phone, my iPad, or my PC laptop. I called Verizon several times and they tried to reset a few things from their end, but none of it helped. They finally said "well, the internet is working on your phone, so beyond that we can't help you." They also knew my phone was rooted. They probably didn't know the bootloader was unlocked too
Anyway, I'm really grasping at straws here - anything buried in my phone that would be handicapping one specific site? Before two weeks ago it was working fine.
Many thanks in advance for the help!

Wanted to also mention that even when I go to click "like" on a forum post, often it takes 10 tries for even that to go through. Just like information is getting totally dropped...but every other site is fine. Thanks!

Do you have any kind of adblocker? (For instance, I use adaway.) If so, as an experiment, temporarily disable your adblocker.

Good idea, CM, but I actually don't. I experienced some strange things (not unlike this) when I had one, so I uninstalled. But it *is* acting similar to a problem caused by that - except it does let it through unfettered for brief spurts! So strange.

Hmm...well, now it appears there are others on the same site having the same problems! *Really* glad it's not just me! Which likely means it's on their end.

Problems with Sling Player Mobile

Is anyone successing using the Kaiser with a Slingbox? I have the latest version of the SB Mobile software that is supposed to run on WM6 but it's very unstable and crashes constantly. I did determine that running Wisbar Advanced would make it crash every time it tried to connect, but shutting that down before starting the program only slightly improved it's stability. I generally can connect and watch video, but any menu options will crash it, as will trying to disconnect and connect again. The Slingbox folks are no help at all, they say the Tilt is not a supported phone (what the heck is WM6 support supposed to mean then??) I'm using the stock HTC ROM, nothing custom or fancy that should be causing problems.
I have a Kaiser/unlocked TyTN II. Works fine for me. There have been some with browser proxy issues. Do a search on this forum for details.
Works great on my Tilt and has from day 1. Try a hard reset and only install SP mobile to isolate your issue. It's likely another piece of software causing the problem.

I did search the forum for any comments on sling player, but didn't find much more than a couple mentions of it, only person mentioning a problem was on a thread about the WIMP GPS tracking program. Not sure what you are referring to about a browser proxy issue, what browser?

Aggh, I have been through so many stinking hard resets with this device so far, I just can't stand wasting yet another day trying to reinstall everything *again*. It just seems like every program I attempt to put on it causes something else to break. And I've tried very hard to only install stuff that is stated to work for WM6. But no matter, I have these constant issues all the time. If it's not crashes, it's email failing to check or alarms not going off, or the time not updating properly or whatever. It's really getting frustrating, why is it so freaking hard for Microsoft to write an OS that *works*?! Between Window Mobile and Vista, it's a wonder that more people haven't jumped ship at this point.
Wow, sorry it's been so agro. I can say that I have one of the first out Kaisers, running Sling Mobile and a slew of other progs, Wimp, iGuidance, Google Maps, MS Live, ContactsCM, PocketInformant, JournalBar, and my SlingBox has never hung. I've not hard reset yet and seldom soft reset. So I know that it can work, you need to start out with a fresh install and add 1 thing a time till you find the problem progs. One of them is messing with you, and unfortunately you've got to find it, one fricking app at a time.
Well, hard-resetting did make the SlingPlayer run flawlessly. I've been slowing adding stuff back on over the last day but have yet to run into whatever it was that was causing the problem. I was hoping it would be something obvious, so I could just restore from backup and not have to spend a lot of time on this, but of course, I couldn't be that lucky and have to put hours of work into it....
I tend to back up a lot as I add apps and test (I prefer SBP Backup), kinda like setting restore points in windows, just in case that last straw app trashes things. Seems the shell progs cause the most issues.
I generally do as well...in this case though the last app I installed *was* the Slingbox Player, so going back to earlier backups wouldn't necessarily save me any time.
I see, I always load Sling 1st then Core player and go from there.
My slingbox wasn't currently connected and running, so I hadn't bothered to download and load the mobile player yet. I don't even have it registered yet, as on my old phone, I never got a good enough connection to get much use out of it. It definitely flies on this phone though!
I'm beginning to wonder if it was simply the order of install that made the difference, as I have all but a couple things reinstalled and it still is working fine. Had one lock-up yesterday from trying to go to fullscreen and back again, but it's definitely far more stable than I was getting before.
I must say as well, this player really blows any other internet TV options out the window! The playback quality really is awesome and being able to watch my own favorite shows at any time is so cool. I never got a ton of use from the Slingbox in the past because a lot of times when I travel I just didn't have access to a good high-speed connection, I'm glad I will finally really be getting some good use out of it. Only problem is that I have the classic model that has these crappy mini-jack inputs with input only (no video pass-through) and I don't have enough outputs on my Tivo as a result to connect everything that I use at once. So I'm trying to decide if it's worth paying to upgrade to a new Slingbox or not. I would guess that the Slingbox Solo would also do a better job with all the HD stuff and correct the aspect a bit better (with the classic, the image is always a bit squished).
Well, haven't quite solved my Sling Player Mobile issues. It seems to work fine over 3G, but crashes every time if I try to connect over my home Wifi connection. Anyone else seeing this? I'd prefer to use the Wifi when available to not overuse the phone service too much (not sure if AT&T really is monitoring this, but no point in testing it if I don't have to!)

It is easy to point the finger at Microsoft but the fact is that your problems are almost certainly caused by one or more applications you installed which were not well written and are causing resource conflicts.
You may recall a few years ago when Microsoft went to a signed driver model. Lots of people complained about it, especially companies that produce hardware. But what did we get for it? Fewer crashes and resource conflicts caused by driver incompatabilities. If the mobile world would develop some standards in development and testing the problems you are seeing would become less frequent and easier to resolve.
Is Microsoft perfect? HA! Far from it. But make sure you are pointing the finger at the real culprit.

Sorry, but this I feel is just a convenient excuse. Yes, you can occasionally run into a really badly written app that causes problems, but I'm talking about constant issues, and I am using all programs that are very mainstream and heavily used by many other PPC users. I used Palm devices for many years and never had the kinds of problems I've had with Windows Mobile devices. And these are problems it's had for YEARS. My very first Pocket PC device (HP Jornada) many years ago had issues with waking up and sounding alarms. Here I am years later, and this *still* is a problem. Look at all the people complaining about the device not waking up to check email. You really want to try and say it's due to something else they have installed that's causing the problem? Come on.
Can I ask a question to you guys about what sort of frames per second you are getting. I am sitting here with my TYTN 2 getting about 8 FPS on Hsdpa full signal. Any thoughts on why the FPS might be so low?.
Many thanks.
Matt.
I have had a look about on the net and the seetings that seem to be the best are 65 bitrate ,full FPS, 30 iframe. I am now getting a good 24 FPS. I hope this helps someone.
Matt.

I am Sorry, that YOU loaded something that didn't come with your product and it broke.
Out of the Box my Tilt checks email. Vanilla JUST about everything works as advertised. Does the Tilt have bugs ? Sure everything has bugs.
Using a password and coming out of suspend the back-light is DIM. Completely unreadable in sunlight. Not an OS issue as other WM6 devices didn't have this problem.
Microsoft has a responsibility to make this OS robust. I think they have come along way since 2003, WM5, moving toward WM6. As for Palm there have been multiple version of their OS mostly geared toward PDA's.
Every OS has issues thats why we get new versions.
If I load something that isn't from Microsoft and it breaks, how is that a WM6 fault ? All blame aside do you really expect Microsoft (or anyone else) to regression test every possible version and combination of application out there so YOU will be happy. I am guessing here but I don't believe Microsoft will show up and fix it, nor will HTC. YOU get to fix it
Slingplayer isn't perfect. There have been multiple versions since the beta all aimed at refining their product.
I use it, and like it, so much so that if an app breaks Slingplayer I remove that app not Slingplayer. Others may feel the same way about a Wishbar or an SPB product. If an application is considered CORE that should go in first warts and all.
I installed Microsoft Live search with beta voice support. Cool app like Google maps. It locked up my device hard, twice, and I had to stylus reset to recover. Was it this beta or something else that didnt play nice? I removed the 'not ready for prime time' search application and all is well.
Any application that hooks API's and interrupts in an attempt to supplement and extend functionality is suspect.
That Tilt is a very complex little product. If you are striving to improve its functionality beyond what came in the box, it will be up to you to strike a balance as to what works for you.
Frustrating, at times....
Fun, it can be. I didn't spend hundreds of dollars to be eternally pissed off.
And when it stops being fun and or productive maybe a different OS or closed venue like the iPhone might be a better way to go.
These forums are here to help. We are trying to look for solutions to make these products as cool as they can be.

Wow, you must be some kind of magician to just come to that conclusion. I have had PPC devices that did NOT work as advertised out of the box. My last one never was able to properly connect with Wifi. I did a hard reset all the way back to nothing but the core apps and it still had problems. The manufacturer blamed it on my router (even though my laptop and Palm device previously had no issues) but I still went out and got another router...and still had problems.

Gee, aren't you lucky then. The fact that it works for you does not therefore mean it works for everyone else, particularly since there are many different types of email servers that it needs to connect properly to. With the HTC home app running and nothing else whatsoever installed on my Tilt, I had issues with it checking email.

As you JUST said above, they have a responsibility to make the OS robust. If it was a matter of a single app causing a problem, that's one thing. But it's not, it's a problem with the Windows Mobile platform. How many times do you see on this forum people told they will need to hard-reset their device because of a problem? That's just absurd. If I had to reformat my desktop every time it started misbehaving because of something new I installed, I'd be up in arms!
All blame aside do you really expect Microsoft (or anyone else) to regression test every possible version and combination of application out there so YOU will be happy.

This is just an absurd statement. I don't expect them to regression test every combination of apps on Windows XP, but I also expect if I install something it's not going to bring my entire system to a crashing halt. But even if it does, on those very rare occasions if you are using legitimate software, at least I have a system restore point to get my device back to a working state, or can boot into safe mode to remove the offending program, etc. Where is the similar type of functionality for Windows Mobile?? Oh, I have to get a 3rd party app like Sprite Backup for that kind of thing. Of course, I had issues with that crashing on me as well (only some of the backup options work).

Well, I've gone as far as hard-resetting the device and installing ONLY SlingPlayer and it still crashed on me when trying to connect over Wifi. So who do I blame for that one? If I have nothing else on my device other than the core apps and SlingPlayer and it still doesn't work for me and it works for other people, what then??

So you've had issues with WM devices connecting via Wifi before? Does it work on someone else's Wifi network?
Which version of Slingplayer are you using? When you say it crashes, does it actually crash or just closes itself?
Also, the HTC Home plugin should have zero effect on checking email.
You can blame the software/hardware, but I don't think there are any other users having so many unique issues. Maybe WM isn't for you?

PIE not working on 3G

Okay, I'm just wondering if there is a setting somewhere that I'm not aware of and hopefully someone could point it out. When I am at home and the phone is connected to my home Network ( WiFi ) Pocket Internet Explorer works just fine. Now turn off WiFi, reverting back to 3G, and Pocket Internet Explorer doesn't function. Just loads blank pages continually. The reason for me thinking it's a setting somewhere is because I also have Opera, which works fine on both WiFi and 3G. So while PIE is oblivious to the World around it, Opera's singing along. LOL! Honestly I wouldn't really even care except I have the mod installed that allows PIE to transfer live video streams to TCPMP thus making YouTube and such work rather well on the device. If that worked in Opera, PIE would never be used on my device. Hehe... So, anyway there's my problem. I eagerly await ideas. Thanks!
No one huh?
Geesh, I hate when I find a problem the technical like crowd can't even answer. :\ That leaves ya with... Technical Support from the... MAN... And we ALL know just how extremely useful / helpful those folks are.
Keep in mind that some people don't LIVE on this forum.. (i do though..) and the members of this forum are from all across the world, so people are on at different times.
Your posts are 13min. apart. If everyone could get their solution within 15min i think people that help out on this site should be paid! but thats not the case...
now to solve your problem; Are you on AT&T? if so i'd recommend finding the disablehiddenproxy.cab and installing that. I had the same probelm and after disabling the proxy everything was back to normal.
if i remember the manual correctly, for wifi you want proxy's off...
for MediaNet you want the proxy on

Firstly, thank you. I will try that.
Secondly, please check the dates of my posts. I realize that people do not live here. And all help is appreciated. I waited 24hrs.. And, by the way, I don't get to live here either. It is sheer coincidence that I happened to check back pretty much 24hrs. later on the button. LOL! Well, pretty close for not really even paying attention to that anyway.
Thirdly...
And thirdly, that is precisely why we all love ya! Disabling the proxy corrected the issue. I think that my phone actually came with that active, I don't recall PIE ever working over 3G... Until now that is. I figured it was simple since, as I said, I have Opera on the device also and it didn't care. It worked no matter how the device was connected to the 'net. Anyway, thanks much!

Captivate wifi fix?

Ok guys. I am not sure what is going on here.
I can't connect to my schools wifi and it is becoming a royal PITA.
I can connect to wifi perfectly fine at home.
At school, they don't require any sort of "password" to access the network. (no wep or anything I mean) They do have one of those annoying/retarded portal login systems which seems to be coded to only care for laptops.... Actually I should say coded for a hand full of browsers ON the laptop.
I once or twice a week or so ago was able to actually access the login page either by entering it manually and being able to actually use wifi for a few minutes.. or by getting redirected.
I took the problem up with the help desk, they said we now have alimit of 4 wireless devices and my allowance was maxed.
Unlikely but, whatever..
So now over the last few days won't redirect me, it won't let me even enter the login address manually.. (before it wasn't a sure thing but, I could at least do it.)
I am rooted running cog 3.03. (Which does have the 2.2 update) Had the same problem on stock 2.1.
Goes without saying I'm rooted and willing to do what it takes to get wifi working here.. Even if I did happen to have unlimited data.. my school is pretty Iphone heavy... especially at lunch, And some days I am just happy to receive the occassional text I can get from my girlfriend.
But, fact is I don't have unlimited data.. I have extremely limited data.
If anyone has a solution, I would appreciate it.
Tried:
Wifi fixer in market.
Rebooting.
"forgetting" then reconnecting. (a million times).
Manually assigning an IP address.
Praying to Cthulhu
Using multiple browsers to see if one works with portal better.
and I am out of idea's..
Any chance you need to enter a proxy server?
I have never needed to enter a proxy server before with any other device.
And I have never found anything suggesting I would anywhere on the school website.

You might ask around about it. The browser is probably set to auto detect a proxy. You don't have that on the phone.
Although, you do indicate you actually did connect for a bit a while back, so it likely isn't the proxy.
Sorry. Don't know what else to offer.
I appreciate the effort, unfortunately my school didn't resolve the issue either so I am unsure what to do..
You might be on to something with the proxy...
No telling how the looney's set this stuff up...
Do you have the login page in your favorites? And does the device connect to the wireless "hotspot"?
I'd test it at a starbucks (or mcdonalds of all places have them too) and see if the issue repeats itself. The ATT hotspot requires you accept the agreement before it allows you to browse.
If it doesn't work.. I'd go back to stock and see if you continue having the same issues. If the issues are resolved when going back to stock - then you'd need to bug DG for a possible fix with his ROM as that is possibly where the problem lies.
Yes it does happen to connect at other places.
I can get it working at home no problem.
I have the url memorized at this point to log in..
Part of the reason i rooted was one or two people said it cleared whatever wifi problems they wre having up..
Infact I would agree with that more than anything..
Although it didn't fix my problems, I have been able to do a bit more..
I hate with a passion bumping my own thread.. but, if anyone can help.. I would appreciate it.
i think your issue might not be your phone but your school unfortunately... when you are there to connect, are there a lot of others there as well?? for example, where i am at, they have their access points set up and i can select it with my phone, but sometimes i get on and sometimes i dont.. the issue is that they limit the amount of connected users and it might show that you are connected, but you don't in fact have access.. does this sound about like what you are having??
a test (and this will suck) is to let it connect and if it isnt connected, sit there for a while and watch as people leave and see if you connect.. usually they slot peeps in order as they log in via their IP.. so depending on how many users are not able to connect, you might not be the first to get on.. this sux and i know.. it happens here all the time and some times i have drained my laptop battery sitting there trying to connect.. now that i have my phone, 1 or the other will connect first
hope it helps a little.. but like said.. good chance its not your phone .. if it is your phone.. i am not really sure what else to think of at the moment..

[Q] SGH-T599N Network Mods?

I've had the SGH-T599N since October, and, coming from the Samsung Admire with all its roms and mods and support, I've found having this phone to be, well, not as great.
My 2 main gripes with using internet on this phone, are that some sites I go to just don't quite work right with however MetroPCS/T-Mobile has their network setup, which I'll sort of elaborate on, and as of late, the, for lack of better phrasing, the peaking and subsequent slowdown of my internet speeds.
I'll start with the latter, since it's easier to explain, and because I tend to ramble, I'll state the question again before explaining:
1. Is there any way I can mod this phone to bypass automatic network speed capping?
I have MetroPCS's unlimited 4G plan, which ran at satisfactory speeds always at hundreds of KB/s until recently, which I assume is due to my speeds being capped out of over-usage. Considering I use USB tethering daily, this is not shocking. The thing is, I could get around that with my Samsung Admire thanks to this mod: http://androidforums.com/admire-all-things-root/563714-mod-data-governor-remover.html and by extension, this mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888372
Considering that was a 2.3.4/Gingerbread OS phone, this is a 4.1.2 phone, and I've looked around both of these forum sites long enough to know not to do any phone modding without extensive research and to wait for the bugs to be sorted out by others, I dare not even get my hopes up about being able to do that with this phone unless there's a confirmed forum post saying I can. Before that, I also found ways around the limits of my 3G network area that's bogged down by the sheer number of users, as thanks to QPST, but falls under the same situation. I don't even want to try modifying the build.prop, much less those deeper settings on my own for risk of breaking/bricking the one and only phone I have and still need to have functioning fully for many more months. So far, I've only gotten around all this by turning my phone and maybe the mobile network on and off, because the slowdown lock takes a couple minutes of use to kick in.
2. Can I change the network settings of this phone in a productive/significant manner, via APN changing, QPST, ROMs, or other such mods?
I've done all of these before on my Admire without any permanent errors. I found that APN Manager Pro is too outdated for this OS, and have yet to try similar APN programs for risk of permanent network damage. I cannot currently recall any significant mention of using QPST on this phone, or even this OS, so I've not tried that. The only ROMs I know of are Unjustified Dev's, both of which break the video camera functionality, which I have to have working. The only thing I've even done to this phone is root it and put ClockWorkMod from this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2421743. I haven't even bothered with the odexed files, bloatware, and such yet because I mostly use this phone as just a camcorder, an internet modem, and of course, a phone.
I wonder about this because it may indirectly solve the first problem, but there's different issues as well...I'll just explain:
Now, I notice that some sites I try to use with this phone simply fail to work as properly as they would if I were using a Wi-Fi network, something that also happened with my Admire. Unfortunately I don't have many examples that I can share for one reason or another other than these following two, which luckily involve big name websites. However, they may or may not prove useless in the end, so I'll put them in spoiler tags to be easily skipped over to go on to the more important part.
When I tried to access Tumblr with my old phone's network, whether I'm on my phone or USB tethering to my laptop, it always refused to let me log in, meaning I had to go to a Wi-Fi network and log in from there first, and then, if I wanted to "ask a question" aka submit a message to any of the blogs/pages I'm following/subscribed to, they would always say that that function is not available "at this time", which basically means forever since it seems to involve some error on Metro's side that'll never be fixed. I know it's not some kind of script error on the browser end, because if I stop the page from loading at the right moment, the text input field would actually display and maybe even work, rather than be dummied out by some eternal error message that doesn't even come up if I were using any other network.
Also, on my current phone, when I try to upload a video to Youtube on an associate's account while tethering to my laptop, it refuses to upload, much less even recognizing that I'm trying to upload, as it stays at 0 percent. This is also circumvented by just using a different internet connection. This does not ever happen when I'm using my own account, however, and I've managed to circumvent by changing the browser's user agent or switching browser completely.
Now, I said that the above two examples may not even be relevant, because these may be issues only I can reproduce. For some sites, I manage to get around the issues with different web browsers and/or user agent or proxy settings, but I sometimes get Gateway Timeout messages and other such unavoidable errors on sites that imply server side problems, but don't come up when I use other internet connections. Because the issues vary from site to site, I'm only asking for a verified method I can test directly on the phone, on my own, to get around these problems.
That's should explain enough of, if not all of the issues I'm having network-wise. It might seem like rambling, but it's better for me to explain it all now than for someone that actually has the answer to come by only to be missing one crucial bit of info. In case it is just rambling, to reiterate:
I have the 4.1.2 OS phone SGH-T599N, the Samsung Galaxy Exhibit from MetroPCS, which has been rooted along with CWM, but no other modifications. I'm trying to modify the network settings, and need a confirmed method, not a guess, on how to go about it.
Have you tried using a different browser? Opera will usually do things that chrome/stock can't. There are also YouTube uploader apps out there.
I think that if there was a magic hack to circumvent metro throttling out there it would at least have a sticky.

Firefox, Chrome, Opera, Stock, no matter what browser I use, it fails to load. It's a network problem, not a browser problem. I also don't quite see any such app allowing me to schedule video posting, when even the Youtube app doesn't have this account specific function. What I do see is bunch of Youtube player apps and downloader apps, but no uploaders. Even if there was one with the option, I'd still have to go back to my laptop for it anyway, because there's a lot of information and tags I have to add to the videos, most of which is automatically loaded from Youtube's settings when using a comp, none of which shows up on a mobile.
As for the hack, considering the one I linked worked for me, but not for others, a mod that works only for certain networks isn't really the kind of thing that should be stickied. If this thread turns into a discussion on that, I'll never get a legitimate answer.
Suppose I need to bump this thread, since it got moved, and is over taken by the other threads.

WIFI Stopped working.

I've had my two TP's rooted for years, mainly JC Sullins' builds. My wife's TP stopped connecting to our wireless, and she gave up on it a few years ago. I dusted it off, did a clean install with the TP Toolbox and loaded JC's Cyanogen 12.1-20160109. I also took the opportunity to delete the WEBOS since we never used it anyway. Well, the upgrade to a new operating system didn't fix my wireless problem. It still shows that it's trying to turn the wifi on. It never happens.
I've been searching for days, and still can't find a solution to this dilemma. I'm a firm believer of searching for an answer first, and hate to admit that I can't figure it out.
What do I need to do here?
I also loaded my TP with the same build, and it works like a champ. Mine never had a wifi connection problem.
I'm all ears.

I've had my two TP's rooted for years, mainly JC Sullins' builds. My wife's TP stopped connecting to our wireless, and she gave up on it a few years ago. Give this a try, it's a shot in the dark but I had this happen back in CM7 or 9 days.
Power off bothfo the TP's. We'll use your's for the 'known good' device.
Change the channel on your router to a higher number, like maybe 12...
Power cycle the router. (sorry if this screws up any other devices that are attached.)
Power up TP#1 & see if it connects and verify that you can get out on the net.
Then try #2.
if a no-go go then grab this terminal emulator so we can grab some info using the good ol' command line.
I wondering if the Wifi interface is dead but holding out hope that it isn't.

Thank you for the reply.
I really can't get to my router right now to try that.
When I turn on her wireless setting, it just says "Turning wifi on...." and never does. I never get to see a list of available networks.
So what is this wifi interface that you speak of? I'll start looking into that.
Better still install this for retrieving syslogs. Someone in another thread recommended it and it is a lot easier to use.

I finally got the SysLog installed. Opened it up, and there is a statement that there is - "No root access. Without root access, it's not possible to get system or modem logs, and with some 3.x kernels it also may not be able to get kernel logs."
