By popular requests, here is my everyday orthodox cleaning procedure prior flashing all these roms:
Prerequisites:
- Be in MM6 already.
- Make sure you upgraded your device via .kdz file only
Benefits: Your phone will feel like new.....
1) Resizing partitions:
- Flashing all these roms, sometimes cause resizing your system partitions and you wont even know it....... please do the following: Boot to recovery > wipe > advanced wipe > select system > click repair or change file system (bottom) > resize file system > swipe to resize (bottom)
Notes:
- If you get errors resizing these partitions (red), just reboot to recovery and repeat this procedure again, until no error shows up.
- You will do this resizing to three partitions (system, data and cache).
2) Wiping everything:
- Boot to recovery > click mount > check all partitions (but external_sd) > click home or back > click in advanced > file manager > in root "/" click check mark (bottom right) > click delete > swipe to delete
Notes:
- This procedure will delete all extra files and junk files on your partitions....... don’t worry the important partition's files are read only. So, after reboot everything will be fine.
- This procedure will freeze the phone with some errors (in red). Just take the battery out
- This procedure will wipe your internal storage
3) Boot to recovery and flash your new rom.
4) Profit!!
Enjoy your trouble free phone

hi Luis.... if you are in 20o and rooted, you can do this and will be good. I always like to do kdz as first choice, since it cleans and upgrade everything from scratch.......

Haha yea, luckily I have autobackups for everything
After wiping /, you can reboot into recovery via this method:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/g4/help/how-to-manually-enter-to-recovery-mode-t3129643
I always forget the manual way (specifically, the part where you need to let go of the power button, then hold it again), so hopefully this helps someone here too.
to enter recovery mode using hardware buttons do this.
phone completly off.
press volumen down button, make sure you press firmly. never release this button keep it pressed.
then press power button. keep it press.... phone will turn on when you see LG logo
then do 2 clicks on power button keeps pressing adter 2 clicks then it should take you to recovery.
thanks for this. works well, though it didn't fix issues I've had with the phone.
Boot to recovery > click mount > check all partitions (but external_sd)... Not choose external_sd ?
Dont want to wipe external storage beacuse rhe rom you plan to flash will be stored there. As well as it doesnt need wipe for installs of roms. Its not part of the main partitions.
Thank you very much Turbo for directing me here.
Among the prerequisite, i am right now using cm13 based ROM and i flashed it using twrp.. How to fulfill the second requirement?

Important Notice Due to my exams i wont be available till 25th. I have tried to make instructions as clear as possible still if anyone is having problems u can use 1.2, 1.2.1, 1.5, 1.5.1 all stable.1.5 and 1.2.1 have most positive feedbacks.

Dear friends ..
You need a rooted wildfire for this...
Thanks frnds for ur interest and testing support ::
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED I can't say it enough be it this or any other ROM, Always Back-up your current stable ROM with Nandroid.
IMP IMP IMP::Please format your SD card to FAT32 before flashing and remove all partitioning.This way you wont have Boot Loop Trouble.
To Flash the zip file needs to be copied to root of ur Sd card and flashed from recovery.
You can also use Koush's Fake Flash.
This ROM wont delete ur personal data from your sd card.
Its better to Wipe ur Caches from recovery menu before flashing. Recommended.
DOWNLOAD the ROM.Complete Following steps.Same steps for all ROMs here.
# Flash the ROM and Make the first boot (will take little time).
# Reboot Once. Now Boot into RECOVERY..and complete following Steps::
HOW TO SET UP SD CARD FOR APP2SD to work properlyA. backup your sd card to your computer, as partitioning will wipe the entire card.(Just to be super safe::Format your card to FAT32 on your PC and then insert it into ur Buzz/Wildfire)
B. Reboot into recovery
c. Select partition sdcard
d. Again select partition sd card.
e. Follow the instructions on the phone to partition your sd card. You can optionally set a swap file while you are partitioning your sd card.
Recommended setting (Swap=0, Ext=256, rest=fat32)
F. In the partition sdcard menu, select sd:ext2 to ext3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
G. ONLY FOR Vibes v1.1 Others skip this step nly perform this step if you want ext4 and your rom supports it: in the partition sdcard menu, select sd:ext3 to ext4. Follow the instructions on the sdcard.H. Press the up volume button on the phone to go back to the main menu.
I. Reboot and viola you are done.

LOTS of partitioning trouble causes phone to have boot trouble.
1. Please before flashing remove your partitions you had created earlier.
2. Then Format to FAT32.
Its just partitioning problem i have checked the ROM friends once u partition ur card..then formatting will clean only one partition other is still unusable you have to remove partion. then Format to Fat32 and boot.
HERE ARE SOME INSTRUCTIONS AND A TOOL that will solve ur problems once and for all..
and after this partition removal, ur card is fat32 again ..this time just create a partition with recommended setting (swap=0 and ext=256)..try ext2 first.

I'm not allowed to ask this in the dev forum as I'm not up to my 10 posts quota, so sorry for posting this here!
In the LightJB instructions instruction 3 is "wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik-cache, wipe system"
I've got CWM installed (LQ4 and CoCore 6.0) and the options in the CWM recovery menu are "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition".
Am I right in assuming that I should choose to do both of those two options, and then also in the "advanced" menu do the "wipe dalvik cache" option too? Just checking! Once I've done this once, I'll become a natural at it...
Cheers!
Matt
I guess you're right... But why don't you just flash a CoCore E kernel with TWRP.. Wouldn't that be much easier?
Its way more user friendly than CWM....
And yes, do have a backup of everything as Factory Resetting and wiping data is going to erase all your apps, etc.
BTW- Questions like this belong to Q & A thread.. Not the Development thread

I guess I'd just heard more about CWM than TWRP. I might be a noob here, but I'm not put off by command line-type stuff. I can still remember how to join multiple uuencoded text files together to get lovely pictures of Winona Ryder appearing on my screen in 1993, before I'd even heard of a graphical browser.... happy days!
Cheers for the pointer!

Matt,
Read my thread with CWM guide (see my signature) and i think you will be fine.
Do a Nandroid Backup before start to flash a new ROM.
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition
Advanced -> Wipe Dalvik cache
1. Download the ROM from the link given in the article featuring that ROM. It should be a zip file.
2. Connect your phone to your computer via USB and mount its storage card.
3. Copy the downloaded ROM to the root of the storage card.
4. Power your phone off and reboot it into recovery. This will involve using a combination of your device’s hardware keys. Once in recovery, you can navigate its menu using the volume up and volume down hardware keys or your phone’s trackball / optical track pad if it comes equipped with one.
5. Use the ‘backup and restore’ feature of recovery to backup your existing ROM installation, software and data. This step is known as performing a nandroid backup. ALWAYS perform a backup before flashing a custom ROM, UNLESS you can afford to lose everything that’s on your phone at the moment.
Note: ALWAYS choose to perform the following steps 6, 7 and 8 UNLESS the ROM you are attempting to flash is an updated version of the same ROM that you are currently using, and is compatible with the current installation’s data. It is usually mentioned with the update whether you can install it over a previous version without wiping its data or not.
6. Get back to the main recovery menu and use the option ‘wipe data/factory reset’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select “Yes – Delete all user data”.
7. From the main recovery menu, select ‘wipe cache partition’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Cache’.
8. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘advanced’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Wipe Dalvik Cache’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Format/System’.
9. From the main recovery menu, enter the ‘Mounts and Storage’ menu. From this menu, select ‘Format/System’. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Wipe Dalvik Cache’.
10. Go back to the main recovery menu by pressing the back button and select the ‘Install zip from SD card’ option.
11. Select ‘choose zip from sdcard’ to get a list of the files and folders on your SD card. Scroll to the ROM’s file that you copied there in step 3, and select it. You will be prompted to confirm this action. Select ‘Yes – Install file_name.zip’ where file_name.zip is the name of the zip file that you are trying to install.
12. Wait patiently while the ROM is flashed to your phone via recovery.
13. Once the installation is complete, head back to the main recovery menu if you aren’t there, and select ‘reboot system now’. Your phone will now boot into the newly installed ROM.

My last question - when i've rebooted, I'm prompted to sign into my Google Account and re-install my apps from the google backup. Is this the "best" way to do it, or is it better to use alternative sch as Titanium? I'm not bothered about lost data, the only data I care about is in my gmail account anyway.
Cheers!
Matt
Reinstall your apps with that app you make backups. If you do it with Titanium, then go for it, and restore with Titanium.

Thanks. Its that sort of common sense stuff which I've found missing from many of the guides - they tell you how to root / flash etc, but leave nagging other questions unanswered - perhaps because the answers are so obvious to the authors that they are just second nature.
As it happens, I didn't bother with a Titanium backup as I wanted a clean phone - I've been trying to resolve a strange issue where my wifi goes really slow and stuttery after the phone has been on for a few hours. No-one else seems to have the issue, so I suspect it is down to at least one of my apps causing some chaos. With that in mind, a fresh install with no baggage seemed to be the best way to go.
(I used to suspect the Facebook apps (particularly Pages Manager) but I don't think they are the cause)
Thanks for all the help!

For me cwm is more user friendly and more straight forward compared to twrp. I once tried twrp and after I mount system suddenly it said there's no os installed and I can't boot my phone. Luckily I can still enter download mode to flash back fw with odin. I don't understand how twrp works..haha :silly:

It was my pleasure, Matt. :highfive:
Well, for no other reason than that I wanted to tweak a few things before I started to live with LightJB, I chose to restore my phone using the CWM nandroid restore.
Bad move!
It all seemed to work fine, but on restoring I get the message that "Unfortunately, the process com.google.process.gapps has stopped". Mildly worrying, but moving on...
Then I came to try to reply to a sms message from my wife. Pressing in the reply box didn't bring up a keyboard. Odd.
I went into other apps and found I couldn't type there either.
Went into settings, and neither the samsung keyboard nor the swype keyboard appear to have been re-stored via the backup / restore.
Any hints?
Matt
Hi all,
First I must point out I'm a bit of a noob at this flashing kernels/roms etc. I want to install Jelly Bean Mini Project | Android 4.1.2 on my xperia x8.
I rooted it ages ago with superoneclick. I got the rom here in the download section of this post and got the kernel here. Not sure how to proceed do i unzip the rom folder called "X8_JBMP-Release4"? I need a tutorial on what programs to use etc. step by step would be handy. I did look did look am continuing to look. Thanks in advance and sorry.
first of all you have installed nAa's jb kernel right?
---------- Post added at 06:27 PM ---------- Previous post was at 06:21 PM ----------
if not, download Flashtool from here
then do the following steps
1. go here and find the "Flashing custom kernel" step
2. Flash the kernel, beforehand, be sure to have the proper drivers installed, go to the flashtool directory, drivers, execute the .exe file then choose drivers for x8, fastboot and flashmode
3. You are ready to flash a kernel, just follow the instructions on the thread I pointed out to you
4. No need to unzip the ROM file as it is a flashable zip, after flashing the kernel power up your device and click the back button a couple of times
5. You are now in the CWM recovery, go to mounts and storage and select: format /system, /data, /cache and then back to the CWM main menu, select Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe cache partition, and to the advanced option, wipe dalvik cache
6. Now you have just performed a full wipe, go to install zip from sd card, find the ROM zip file you just downloaded and install it
7. Then install the GAPPS needed to work with JBMP
8. Reboot and Enjoy

Will a reflash do it? do I need to flash back to a stock rom first? Or is there something I need to do to let a2sd work like give it a partition somehow?

just format system cache amd data after a full wipe (wipe cache amd dalvik too) and reflash rom.

Thanks for the reply. I will try it in a couple of days as I'm busy with work and will post back here with the result.
moving apps
I booted into CWM recovery and used the advanced section to create a 1gb partition left swap size setting at 0 and that fixed the issue. I guess if I wasnt a noob I would have made a partition on the card in the beginning. Apps can now be moved except those that dont allow movement but I am using link2sd for those. Its cool to see jellybean on this phone. I get quite a few hangs/crashes using the browser, bluetooth earpiece connects fine but I cant hear calls on it and the countdown timer is erratic closing by itself quite often. Maybe there are some settings I need to tweak to get the best performance? Thanks again for all the help and replies by the way.

@shem2409 created a nice youtube video guide to assist you in your work, be sure to check this post for it! Thanks m8!
In the following guide I suggest you use an external SDCard but that's just good practice, you can use your internal storage or even an USB OTG storage device in TWRP if you like to install, that's no problem!... If you are modding and the likes, best is to have an external sdcard, just for safeties sake.
C6602: How to update to 10.3.A.0.423:
NOTE: STICK TO THIS ORDER AND STEPS!!
For C6602: Download C6602.flashable.423.zip (Bittorrent: 686MB) and C6602_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf (15MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6602.flashable.423.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6602_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash 'C6602.flashable.423.zip' in TWRP, do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6602_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf';
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
C6603: How to update to 10.3.A.0.423:
NOTE: STICK TO THIS ORDER AND STEPS!!
For C6603: Download C6603.flashable.423.zip (Bittorrent: 719MB) and C6603_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf (15MB), save it somewhere you remember;
Put 'C6603.flashable.423.zip' on (the external) SDcard1;
Put 'C6603_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf' inside the Flashtool/firmwares folder;
Create a backup of your phone in CWM or TWRP and don't forget to backup the contents of 'SDCard0';
Flash 'C6603.flashable.423.zip' in TWRP, do not reboot but go back to the main menu, then go to reboot->power off;
Flash everything in 'C6603_10.3.A.0.423-stripped.ftf';
Reboot to system without clearing (dalvik-/)cache.
The first boot will be considerably slower and after a long wait at the boot animation you will see Android optimizing the apps on your phone.
After updating your NFC firmware and some update information has been displayed, all is done!
I have done this myself, using my own method and I have not found any problem yet, again! :fingers-crossed:
Enjoy! :victory:
Known XZDualRecovery Issues:
TWRP Usage warning: It seems TWRP 2.5.0.0 has issues with the internal storage, which seem related to the changes made to support encrypted storage volumes... This means the internal storage sometimes shows up almost empty (just folders) and no files. Try to use CWM when that happens.
Busybox Updater/Installer: If you have XZDualRecovery installed, un-install any Busybox updating app/tool as most if not all of them will install a version of busybox which does not support the lzma compression applets XZDualRecovery depends on. The version installed together with XZDualRecovery is very stable and I have yet to hear anyone complain about it's stability.
How to report errors:
Please, before shouting out "It doesn't work!!1!" or "I lost root!" or even "My phone reboots when remounting /system RW!!" try the following:
Restore a /system ONLY using any means you are familiar with so you can try again.
Root it using [Z][ROOT] DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit.
Install XZDualRecovery and then try to update again using TWRP. This time you can skip the FTF as it has already done it's job.
If it still fails something from there on: LOGS!!.
NOTE: The important ones can be found in /cache/recovery and in /tmp/XZDualRecovery, pack them up and send them to me.
Thank you
Flashable ROM Mutator:
Download AROMA ROM Mutator 0.14
This (former patch package) uses AROMA to create a user friendly menu to choose between updates to be installed.
If you want to switch from SuperSU (default in this ROM) to SuperUser (Be careful, SuperUser is incompatible with 4.2.2!) you can use this to make the change.
If you have the reboot problem when trying to remount /system writable, you can reinstall the superuser app of your preference, it's installation includes the latest patch.
If you are missing /system/bin/chargemon.stock and you want to be able to charge your phone while it's turned off.
Flash using one of the recoveries!
Version 0.13 and upwards is using AROMA 2.70B1 or better, the below warning can be ignored for now. Let me know how it performs!
AROMA Warning: AROMA currently works best in TWRP but even there it has some issues on the Z/ZL. It sometimes does not start up correctly or it has a 'sticky button' issue. It makes it a little less easy to use but this will be fixed in time. It is a combination problem caused by the new hardware and incompatibility with it and the fact the recoveries both have been updated considerably to work on the latest phones, causing issues with some functionality of AROMA.
If it hangs when trying to start, reboot your phone and try again.
If it has the sticky buttons, press the button again to activate.
You can avoid the sticky buttons by pressing them for about half a second (that means not too short and not too long). It will work, it's just showing a bug associated with the latest recoveries.
The Samsung S4, HTC One and One X and the Nexus 4 & 7 show the same issues. For them AROMA sometimes crashes, this is an issue i have not yet observed on the Z/ZL.
Thanks go to @Androxyde for the FTF creation, cheers m8!
nice! so does that mean we dont need to factory wipe before upgrading? I thought if we go across versions (4.1.2 > 4.2.2) you gotta wipe all your stuff first.
After flashing the stripped ftf, the phone doesn't go into recovery. It shows green light, Sony logo and nothing else. Then it just reboot again. Already tried downloaing the file and flashing again. still the same problem.
Ya, I need manual install dual boot to access back to CWM/TWRP then just can install but the preinstall superuser root is not working at all.
Root working back by installing DooMLoRD Easy Rooting Toolkit (v15) - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2327472
Is there any reason why the dalvik cache are not wiped in this release process?
Is it simply a speed/optimisation thing, or will it cause issues if it happens?
Comming from PAC... Do i need to install other Stock rom before update or just use the instructions above? thanks.
Ok, so this is what ive done to get this to boot, on existing rom with recovery installed I flashed the .432.zip, obviously it bootlooped, but then flashed the ftf file which got the rom to boot. Then rooted and installed recovery as Andrewtst has linked to above.
Cheers.
Can't download the zip and ftf file, doesnt work, anyone can confirm that? can you reuploading or verify if is everything ok, thx for the work you done.

I found out with the leak by doomlord that it would be possible to update, no need to wipe, the official update works even better

It's meant as an update process and not wiping anything will make the ROM treat your phone as one that just got updated

Yes, you need a stock ROM before you can flash this, I would not recommend updating your phone from PAC...

I have modified the guide a bit as i should have done before i posted it...
Restore the kernel to anything other then the 4.2.2 one and then try to flash the update package, after flashing the update, re-flash the kernel.
I made one error in my guide: If someone is not using the correct version of XZDualRecovery (2.5 BETA) then you lose recovery when on the 4.2.2 kernel. The correct steps order to prevent this from happening are now in the OP.

Sorry guys, the server is under a heavy load at the moment... the webserver lost a few workers that ate up much of the cpu time. I've killed them all and restarted the webserver.
IF the problem was caused by that, it's solved now

No need: /data/media IS the 'new' location.

But strangely, my phone isn't detecting the media from the above path, its just showing the pictures form newly created DCIM folder which is on a different location

Ooh... i now see what you mean... you are correct. I'll patch up the flashable package to do it automatically.
For you, use a file explorer to move the contents (skipping the 0 folder) of /data/media to /data/media/0/. Sorry man, i missed that completely on my phone
server stilll unreachable.

Thank you so much for the answer Sir AviNash. I've got a question, if I swipe to factory reset, all my downloaded apps would be gone? Or their settings only? I am hesitating to downgrade because I am thinking that it would lost all my downloaded apps including the data. Am I correct sir?

Yes .. factory reset will remove all app setting and app data. You will need to backup appdata on cloud.
Storage data on SD card will not be touched. To be safe .. backup data on Internal Storage as well.

Now my phone is on v331, and this 331 version is bad,.. worse than the 327, but instead of downgrade to 327, I prefer to wait for your "334 upgrade file for 'UBL-TWRP&Root' user" like you did with the 331
Ty Avinash
Thanks for this
sir,can you give a tutorial to edit firmware updates for flashing on twrp?

Latest update 339 is proven to be stable and reliable release. Probably it's your phone hardware issue.
Maybe you can try to clear the cache first. If that does not work then try reset the phone. If still doesn't work then bring it to service center.
