I am flashing a new rom almost every day at the moment... and the thing that gets me down the most is having to re-enter my phone company`s APN settings each time.
Would it be possible to make an app that simply downloads all the necesary settings???
I would pay money for this! would save me alot of time!
if you are italian, there is a good software for you: "APN Italiani".
you can get it from market.
bye
i thinkt the best way is, to download this anps-conf.xml
http://www.karrderized.com/romguide/apns-conf.xml
look into it and be sure your provider is in there.
take a copy onto your sdcard and after flashing the rom just dp
adb shell cp /sdcard/apns-conf.xml /system/etc
or
adb push the file into /system/etc
after you replacet the file, go to your settings and restore "default"
this is working perfect on my magic, and i think on dream too
Guys, I flashed my Indian SGS with Asian firmware. Trying to add my network's APN from settings failed to work.. it wouldn't save. And I'm unable to edit the /etc/apns-conf.xml file to allow my network's internet APN to work... Using root explorer, I'm unable to edit or delete the file, only copy it... Therefore unable to get online!
Has anyone else faced this issue, or is it just me ? Please advise...
Never mind... Got it working
please help with APN not saving
can you say how did you get it to work, i am facing the same issue here and can't save any APN, please help

You have to get the correct APN (Access Point Name) for your provider to make data/MMS to work, you should not require the XT883 firmware. Just try google with your SIM provider followed by APN settings.. such as "Orange UK APN Settings" or check their website, or give them a call for the correct APN settings. Some SIMs have the APNs locked into the SIM, some of them do not include APNs (You might check a phone from the SIM provider for the APN).
When you find the correct settings, go to Settings > Wireless & Network settings > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names
Create a new APN and enter the info you found. Also check Battery & Data Manager > Data delivery to ensure data is enabled.

I personally use MavRom (Maverick Rom) version 4.0, as version 4.5 has a battery drain issue with the overclock script. It's based on 906 with modifications and tweaks.

On Stock and Blur based roms, there's a little line in the build.prop that Verizon snuck in.. that makes any GSM network appear to have bad reception (only 1~2 bars) but if you check under status, the reception is actually good. You can fix that by editing this line in build.prop;
ro.mot.phonemode.vzwglobalphone=1
Change the 1 to 0 and save, then reboot, this should fix the 'reception issue'
A free root browser would be JRummy's Root browser lite, or ES File Explorer (you can enable root browsing in settings).
Build.prop is in /system
IF YOU INSIST ON FLASHING XT883 (Only required for using AT&T/T-Mobile/Other USA GSM networks)
Open a root browser; copy the build.prop you have to the SDCard or somewhere safe. Copy the build.prop (after you edit the line I mentioned before on the PC, you can use notepad). After you put it in /system MAKE SURE YOU FIX THE PERMISSIONS. Most root browsers just long-press build.prop, then tap permissions (ES is Properties > permissions) Check only Read (on all three, user, other, etc) and Write on Owner ONLY.
Then use the fastboot instructions to flash the XT883 radio. THIS WILL BREAK VERIZON CDMA.
Hello to everybody. I'm italian and I have a problem with my XT890 stock (booloader locked, android 4.1.2, system version 91.2.26001.XT890.Retail.en.EU) and sim card by italian operator Noverca. Noverca is a Full Mobile Virtual Network Operator, MMC 222 MNC 07, working in roaming with TIM (222-01).
When I enter my sim Noverca, on phone: menu> Setup> Other> Mobile Networks> Access Point Names> APN cannot find any access point. If I try to create one ... > New APN> Edit access point> (insert the parameters provided by my operator)> ... > Save, the new APN created by me is not saved and the list of APN available is always empty. Similarly if I receive a message from my operator self-configuring and save these settings, I see a pop-up that the configuration was successful but when I go to see the list of APN find it empty again.
I tried to configure it with the data on and off, data roaming , but always no results. The problem also doesn't occur with sim of other carriers.
The sim card is new and works fine on my other Android phones (RAZR XT910, Galaxy i5800), making right APNs.
In system/etc/ apns-conf.xml file there is written the configuration for my carrier but it's wrong (there is written MMC 222 MNC 01)!
I contacted Motorola XT890 but the answer is that it was not released in Italy and may have compatibility issues. (But in Germany, France and UK has been released and the gsm/wcdma networks are the same as in Italy!)
Thank you for helping.
Same happens to me. Try reseting apn to default and edit the config that should appear.

Thanks but in my case doesn't work. Also at the reboot there isn't any apn saved.
I solved this problem unlocking the bootloader and making Root.
After I went to system/etc and renamed apns-conf.xml in apn-conf.bak (only to have a backup, i could delete the file and it was the same).
Then I went to menu> Setup> Other> Mobile Networks> Access Point Names and resetted APN to default.
Now I can write my carrier's APNs and they are saved without disappearing.
Hello, I have a Verizon DE and am having trouble receiving MMS. I believe the issue is because the MMS port in the APN settings is blank.
However I am unable to add a new APN or edit anything except the name of the existing one. I have tried reseting the APN to default, adding lines to buildprop and even a few apps from the play store with no luck. I'm bootloader unlocked running stock rooted 4.4.4.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
Yes, SQLite editor can help you edit, add, delete Apn ....i need to refresh my memor to get you the exact location of the file to edit...look for telephony.db ...gotta be rooted of course
