I was able to update to 4.4.4 on my XT1053, but I tried checking updates on the phone and on motorola device manager, and they all say there are no updates. What gives?
System version says 213.44.1.ghost_row.Retail.en.US
Also, is it better to root and unlock the bootloader from 4.4.4, or from 5.1?

Hi all,
I was just wondering about following:
I own a Canadian Version (Rogers) of Moto X. Rogers did not start rolling out KitKat upgrade to Moto X yet. However, there should be OTA upgrade roll-out some time soon. My Moto X is unlocked and I'm using it now on non Rogers network. Question is if my Moto X will receive KitKat OTA if I'm not on the Rogers network? If not how can I upgrade OS without losing all my apps and settings. P.S. phone is not rooted and would like to avoid that if possible.
Thank you all.
So nobody on this forum has any idea about my question?.....

I am rather newbish myself with the MotoX, but I have played around with a few ROMS on my old H0X and I assume the principals are usually the same.
When the stock Rogers OTA becomes available you will be prompted to download the OTA. If you choose to install this, it will most likely lock the bootloader.
Your best bet would be to root your phone, and get a custom recovery program on the phone (personally, I like twrp), and do a backup of the entire phone. This way, you can always revert back to that state afterwards.

It shouldn't matter that you aren't physically on the Rogers network. The Moto X should check back to Moto for the update, not a Rogers server. I also have an unlocked Rogers Moto X that I gave to my wife that is on TELUS.
The said thing is, the clueless Rogers reps who man the customer support Twitter don't even think they have an update. They are blaming Moto on not having sent it to them. Hopefully this is just the standard case of clueless CS...

If you do receive the ota and you are running any sort of custom recovery, do not install it, why? It will result in bootloops and it will not install. You must have an untouched system and running the stock recovery for the ota to flash correctly.
As for your boot loader, that will remain unlocked. Now what i suggest is neglect the ota and install the rogers KitKat sbf firmware zip instead.
I did accept the rogers camera ota and I could not flash twrp recovery afterwards, it some how prevents you from over riding the stock recovery. To get around this I flash the sbf firmware and I have no issue flashing twrp recovery. Yes my boot loader is unlocked

No, it will not update directly. All OTAs are "incremental updates"..... e.g. you must be on 4.2.2 to accept the "camera update", you must have the "camera update" to take the OTA to 4.4, and you must be on 4.4 to take the OTA to 4.4.2, etc.
If you want to go straight to 4.4.4, it is possible, but only when the ENTIRE stock SBF is made available. When it is available, you will find it here:
http://sbf.droid-developers.org/phone.php?device=0
You will follow the instructions in the "Return to Stock" thread to flash an entire stock SBF file.
As long as your bootloader is unlocked, you should have no issues rooting once on 4.4.4 (whenever it gets released).
Good Luck
Also note that unlike OTAs, SBFing will erase ALL of your data (equivalent of a factory reset).
I have a Verizon moto x and am just wondering now that lollipop is rolling out whether or not I should wait to update.
I wasn't sure if now a root path might be found. I'd rather have root on KitKat than lollipop with no root.

Not a VZ expert, but I was under the impression with their locked bootloader root was going to be a no-go either way. I may be wrong.
Hi all,
I recently got a new Moto X 2014 XT1096 that came with 4.4.4.. I upgraded from a Moto X 2013 XT1060.. Was happy to have a new phone I could get the bootloader unlocked (and root) and did so on the Moto X 2014 with Sunshine. I did this before taking the OTA to bring the phone to 5.0 lollipop. I realize now this probably wasn't the best sequence, but didn't want to take the OTA because when I did after I got the 2013 it was brought to 4.4.4 then I couldn't root it.
I've been unsuccessful getting lollipop on my 2014 since it wouldn't take the 5.0 OTA I believe due to my unlocking the bootloader. Right now I have "xt1096.system.21.21.43.victara_4.4.4.verizon.rooted.ext4.img" on my phone with mofo. How can I get lollipop on there?
I flashed the stock firmware "XT1096_4.4.4_KXE21.187-43_cid2_CFC.xml.zip" found on rootjunkysdl and it operates just fine.
I tried installing what I believe to be the 5.0 OTA "XT1096_5.0_LXE22.46.11_cid2_CFC.xml.zip" (also found on rootjunkysdl) via the sd card and it says the following...
--Install /dada/media/0 ...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
Installation aborted.
And it doesn't proceed past verification, apparently. Anyone able to help me with this? Have I shot myself in the foot by unlocking the boot loader before I had 5.0 on there or is there still hope?
Problem solved...
I followed the steps to remove the bootloader unlocked warning message and then when I tried to take the OTA it actually worked!
I have AT&T XT1058 Moto x with Android 4.2.2. and I downloaded 41MB big critical update and installed it, so the system version now is 139.12.54.ghost_att.ATT.en.US.
Android version is still 4.2.2.
How can I root it?
Try pie, dont take any update past 4.4.2 after that your out of luck. http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x/orig-development/root-4-4-x-pie-motorola-devices-t2771623
