So I have 2 Note 4's. One has issues, and is my wifes. So I am wondering if I can flash twrp on hers, back it up, then take the backup, and resstore it on the other note4? The reason I want to do this is she does not want to restore everything all over again. My only concern is if I flash twrp, does that wipe data and such??

Installing TWRP will NOT wipe your phone so you're good to go. Remember when flashing twrp over with odin to Uncheck Auto-Reboot.....After Odin says pass unplug phone, pull battery then replace battery and Power up+Home+Power to boot into TWRP.
As far as the rest of your plan it should work fine, just be sure Not to copy/restore the EFS partition
Do i need boot loader unlocked?

I went into CWM to do a restore of a nandroid. After the restore finished and I thought I was going to boot up the google came across the screen and I booted right back into CWM. I can not get out of CWM. I can not get to bootloader by pressing vol + - and power. Everything I do just loops me back to CWM. Can anybody help? Thank you.
Have you tried flashing a rom to see if it boots up? I would wipe everything and flash a rom.

Yes I have flashed my backups and I have flashed JR6 and after it finishes and I touch reboot it goes to the google screen and acts like it is gonna reboot and then reboots right back to CWM.
It could be similar to the way boot flags don't (I mean, are supposed to...) work on the tf201/tf300t models...
You may have to dd away a few bytes on one of the partitions via adb.
I don't own a N7, so I can't guarantee or confirm.
Good luck!

Well did not have to worry about all that. Found my fix here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1781250 should be able to work for anything given you have the files for your device.
I'm following this tutorial on how to root my Orange UK GT-I9305 LTE Unlocked phone running 4.1.2.
Everything goes fine with Odin the phone reboots, then I unplug and turn off my phone, and boot into recovery mode only to find it hasn't installed and Android system recovery 3e is still there.
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

I did follow them to the letter, does installing CWM Recovery actually root the phone or is "rooting" the phone a different process entirely that's required for installing CWM Recovery?.

All depends upon the package but most CWM are root and recovery .

I initially had a rooted stock ROM that i was using for ages then upgraded to a custome ROM but for personal reasons decided to go back to stock.
Loaded stock ROM with intention of rooting only to get rid of bloatware, but not one of the ODIN Flash recoveries work at all, not one, so like you ended up using CF Auto and that worked but now im still stuck with Stock Recovery. I dont understand why none of the recoveries flash when they did before.
Cheers
trouble with cwm/ twrp
Hi all. Yes I'm a noob and I wouldn't ask If hadn't tried a plethora of ways to install either cwm or twrp.
It took me a good hour to find this thread so hope I'm in the right place.
Ok I used odin to root and cwm didn't stick so still on stock rec. However I used framaroot to get super su working and titanium says I'm all rooted up. Other apps only for root also work.
I've since tried using goo manager and Rom manager to install cwm or twrp and both say unsupported.
I've searched these here threads and found a few with same problem namely when using odin cwm wont stick and android reinstalls stock recovery.
So I'm a bit stuck, I'm rooted but have no cwm or twrp.
Any help would he much appreciated.
Try Philz recovery .
I have never used a custom recovery on this phone but i think i read somewhere that when flashing by odin the thing to do is not let odin reboot the phone. untick the reboot option. then when odin is done flashing and says pass shut down the phone . dont let it boot up.once phone is off you can boot into recovery by vol up+hom+power Here is the tricky part. as soon as you see the white samsung start to load aka bootloader screen release the power button but continue to press volume up and home. you should see the circle with the hat symbol. and enter into clockworkmod once in clockwork mod you will need to wipe data cache and dalvick DO NOT WIPE SYSTEM then flash a custom rom zip that you have previously copied to either your extsdcard or sdcard0 at the same time you probably will want to flash gapps as well. the thing is if you boot up before entering recovery . the default native recovery from samsung will take its place back. maybe it is easier to just flash rom manager in the play store. flash clockworkmod and then boot into recovery from the app itself. I9300 is supported . dont know about I9305
thanks !

Thats exactly how I understood the cwm not sticking problem. I have tried rom manager and said not compatable with my device as did goo manager for twrp. I think odin is the only way I get it to stick. So il flash in odin and il try to get into cwm as it boots and wipe those two files you mentioned.
But then can I just boot up as normal ? or will android try to reflash its stock rom ? Damn my phone for being so difficult
I only ask because I haven't decided what CR to use yet (or even looked for any). I was gonna get it all ready first then learn how to install a CR - 1 thing at a time i thought.
Anyway thanks for your help :good:
JJEgan I found Philz thread to be helpful but something I feel Im just not ready for. Im new to this and although the updated cwm looked cool there were just to much going on, maybe for a later day.
Thanks all the same :good:
wiping data plus cache plus dalvick cache is done to prepare your phone for the custom rom that you are going to flash. the wiping is to clean those partitions because if they are not erased you will have problems. especially if you go from one android version to another or touchwiz to aosp. it is done so you get a clean install with minimal issues. if it is not done you will most likely bootloop. effectively it is a factory reset. all of your apps and app data will be gone so you do not want to do that unless you have backed up your apps . however sometimes google automatically installs them after you sign in.
I am not sure why clockwork mod does not stick but if you copy the rom you want to your phone install clockworkmod with odin and then use clockwork mod to flas the rom and gapps package then factory reset you will not have the stock recovery anymore. but this has to be done without booting into android stock . PLEASE FOLLOW THE FLASHING INSTRUCTIONS TO THE BEST OF YOUR ABILITY. AND UNDERSTAND ANYTIME YOU FLASH OR MODIFY YOUR PHONE YOU VOID YOUR WARRANTY AND POSSIBLY CAN CAUSE IRREPARABLE DAMAGE. BEST OF LUCK!

think I got it lol
Ok that's sounds good. However I've just read the threads you linked and now I've got to back up my imei and NV files first or il loose them when flashing. The procedure is all there and seems doable for a noob but i read some peeps are having trouble just doing that. I really wanted to root/install a CR regardless of the troubles cos I want full access and more importantly want to learn all the ins and outs so I can get the best use from my phone so glad I found this forum cause I'm sure I would have bricked my phone otherwise.
Might I ask if I've got this right tho?
1: backup imei/NV files
2: use odin to get cwm to stick using your method
3: boot into cwm to wipe data/dalvick cache and gapps
4:use cwm to flash a CR
5:factory reset
I think that's right?

Thank-you for all that,I really appreciate it.
Can I ask the difference between the apps nandroid manager and titanium? I've backed up with both and wondered if i really needed to? The nandroid backup was nearly 3gb!
Also I was gona backup with qpst for imei and NV files but then read its only for US versions? Will the backup of efs folder include those?
honestly i really dont know what the differences are. l do not use custom recoveries or custom roms. i dont use titanium backup .Any rom I flash i get from sammobile.com. one reason i do not use custom roms is that none can support mhl. I use a monitor and bluetooth mouse and keyboard . without mhl I cant mirror my screen so i always stay with stock roms. i use Xposed framework for modifications.

I wanted to wipe my phone clean using the safe strap recovery and i wiped system, data, cache and forgot to install a rom into that slot.. now i can't make it pass the Note 3 boot screen with the lock on it.
Anyway for me to get back into safe strap without having to odin and erase everything on my phone?

As of version 3.0, Safestrap Recovery is now based on TWRP 2.2.2.1. For more on TWRP you can visit their website: http://www.teamw.in/
Note: Safestrap is heavily modified to be “Safe” for your device. Do not download TWRP from their website and expect it to work the same way. Also TWRP does not support Safestrap, tho some issues that may come up will be TWRP dependant, please try and look on the forums for your device for answers before hunting down TWRP people. They won’t be able to help w/ Safestrap specific questions.
Hello,
So my Galaxy S6 is stuck in a boot loop and i've literally tried EVERYTHING already and nothing will solve the problem. Safe mode won't work, clearing the cache partition won't work and USB Debugging was turned off so adb wasn't seeing my device either. I also tried Kies and Smart Switch. I am convinced my phone is soft bricked and I need to recover some very important pictures and files from it. At this point my last hope is to flash the stock ROM via Odin and I saw that some people said that they have successfully done this without losing any of their data. Is this possible? If so how do I go about doing it properly?
Thanks for any help!
Phone is not rooted and 100% stock.
Recovery and Download screens are working.

Because the phone is stuck in a boot loop. Kies won't detect my phone because it never fully boots.
Weird. I completely removed the system on one before reinstalling the system via Kies before sending it back via warranty exchange. I'd suggest trying again. Obviously you will need model and serial #.

Since you can get into recovery, if I were you I'd flash Unikernel (latest version is 9.1 I believe) and then flash a custom rom. If you can get it to boot you shouldn't lose data in the sdcard/download.

Forgot to mention but I am going to have to return this phone to T-mobile for a warranty exchange, that's why I was trying to avoid custom rom's thinking it might become ineligible. Want to be able to recover data and then reset the phone for return
The phone i wiped the system on was returned via warranty with Tmobile (of course I later reinstalled it via Kies). I would install a custom rom to attempt to get the thing up and running. Once you do that then go from there (back to Kies or factory reset...)

Ok, Thank you! I was worried about the warranty exchange. I will attempt to install a custom rom let's see how it goes.
The purpose of installing the custom rom is to attempt to retrieve your data. If you can boot and then successfully get your data, it would be advisable to remove the custom rom and restore it to factory. Let me know how it goes...

If you've got recovery installed it would be just for that purpose. Restoring your backup (i.e., recovery). I gather you don't have a backup?
What device do you have?
G920F International. The Recovery is not a custom one . It is the default recovery that doesn't have backup mode.

Ahh gotcha. Well...if it were me what I'd do is to boot to download mode and flash TWRP custom recovery file using Odin. Once that passes I'd boot into TWRP and do a backup.
You can then reboot into TWRP and try to restore your backup but you'll likely end up in a bootloop again. If that happens...
Then, I'd download a stock recovery (looks like they have your variant here.
I'd then flash the stock recovery using TWRP and then reboot.
If you get stuck in a bootloop again then I would do a factory reset (which doesn't wipe storage which is where your photos etc. are) and then reflash the stock recovery zip file.
I can't say for certain if that'll wipe your photos, etc. or not but I'm not inclined to think it would.

I didn't flash TWRP as I learned that Samsung Pay will never work not even Stock ROM flash. I instead pulled some vital data files from adb pull on 'the window of around 1 minute' each time it was active during safe mode rebooting and thankfully Google Photos had a backup of my Photos and videos.
I used the wipe data option on stock recovery that wiped everything. The device is like new.
EDIT: I realized that i had the wrong TWRP version for the backup, i already could restore the correct backup and the phone is already working with CM12.1
Hi, i have a i8190N phone, so, i flashed TWRP 2.6.3.0 via TWRP Manager (the data pins on the charge port don't carry signal so i can't connect my phone to a pc for data), after doing it i made a backup, i tried to flash CM12.1 and it didn't work, so i restored the backup and it came back to normal, after that i did a second try, this time using CWM Touch, failed again flashing, so i flashed TWRP 2.7.0.0 and it didn't work restoring this time, it gets stuck at middle and after long times it says failure, i really need help because i'm soft bricked because of this! :'(

If you made a backup with 2.6.3.0, it only can be restored with twrp 2.6.3.0, not with other twrp version. Made with CWM, only can be restored with cwm version xxx, got it!? So, flash/install back 2.6.3.0, if you want to restore that backup

Do yo enable USB Debugging on your phone? And try to wipe data also while wiping in custom recovery, then install root file (I suggest to use superSU) before you flashing CM12.1 rom again.
