Good workaround (Kernel/Firmware) against overheating? - Xperia Z4/Z3+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys I got some huge problems here.
I recently switched from my Z2 to the Z3+ and actually like the phone but the overheating is insane and especially kills Pokemon Go through CPU throttling, which runs smoothly on my old Z2 .
So far I am on 253, cleaned it up and tried a self modified and the zach beta9 Kernel and and runs quite bad on both. Is heating a lesser issue of 224? I actually do not want to reflash the whole system to 224 just to find out it doesn't get better.
Also is there a way to undervolt/underclock? I can change settings in Kernel Aduitor but I have the feeling the phone doesn't really care.
Help much appreciated - thanks!

Try Zach beta 8 kernel. Limit max cpu frequency by kernel auditor.
Still it's only your Goodluck if your device cools down. It's a bitter truth about this model.

Do you have a clue whether 224 or 256 make a difference?
I will try beta8 and report back.

no there was no thermal improvements between these builds, dont flash your system back
but do underclock and tell us the results!
Im also affected by your exact problem

Try this kernel, seems promising. I haven't tried it since it doesnt have twrp.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xpe...m5z-kernel-t3421630/post67813517#post67813517
Edit: Today I have flashed 256, haven't found any improvement. As per my experience 256 haven't brought any noticable change.

**** posted twice and dont know how to delete

Thank you for the replies!
Tested zach beta8, didn't help. Now I am testing http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/orig-development/kernel-om5z-kernel-t3421630/ as suggested and if that doesn't help much also with http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/kill-overheating-flash-zip-t3421782.
And Stamina Mode helps at least a bit.

Statusreport: It always runs bad. But best at the moment with root patched Stock Kernel (253) and that underclocking zip. Although I think that underclocking doesn't really help at all.

What are your temps? When does it start to throttle? Done any thermal-conf configuration to allow more heat?
---------- Post added at 21:03 ---------- Previous post was at 20:58 ----------
I know that @Trilliard has a very good and stable cpu governor where he has disabled two of the little and two of the big cores, this helps a lot if you underclock the remaining 4
Here are his files:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/dont-custom-kernels-want-to-avoid-idle-t3409647
UPDATE: Added my edited files used to apply CPU tweaks (cores down clocked to 0.9 and 1.2ghz, two core disabled, tweaked cpu governor, power and others mods) and these files located in etc folder. Replace them and set correct permissions then reboot.

Actually I didn't know about this combination - I will try it thanks!
Do you know about a thermal-conf? Actually never tried one. The phone gets hot indeed but I still think there might be some space before it actually melts.

Thats what i thought as well i have my own here, its based on another persos post, but i dont remember where...
Anyways, his camera mod worked, but cpu throttle was not tampered with, and it caused a very unbalanced throttling... Ok yay i can use the camera linger and fluently, but when i exit the camera app, i cant use the phone couse its runnig at 348 mhz...
So i i did some modifications to it cpu never get under 840 for little cores, so your phones menues end web browsing are always safe from performance drops.
I made it to be able to play Pokemon go, and achieved a lot better resault than without any changes.. still prefer playing on my shield tablet, but if i dont have it around when theres a lot od pokestops nearby, then this will work for me.
While playing Pokemon go it does not go over 80 degrees, but using snapshat it can get to 85, so dont use snap for to long
Let me know if it worked for you!

Im using stock kernel, may switch to another soon. Im using stock bcause of batterylife and idle power consumption
Im using the governor and cpu modifications in this post ; http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/general/dont-custom-kernels-want-to-avoid-idle-t3409647

Hmm. Still runs ****ty.
Can anyone give me a short guide how to edit thermal and governors?
According to my observations the phone gets hot and then cold. I think the throttle is more aggressive and needed and I want to make it less aggressive.

Update:
I made my own modifications to the thermal engine. It is pretty bad for battery I guess but I had a very good expierence playing Pokemon Go with it today. Yes the phone gets hot. Like it doesn't drop below 70°C while playing and regulary hits 80°C but it works good. No dark screen, no 0 CPUs downclocking. So far it's fine for me, maybe I get squeeze even more out of it.

Still working good for me. Not sure if I can really squeeze out more and as long as it works at the moment I do not have a good motivation to try anything else.
No idea about SoT. Always running around with a powerbank. Probably bad, it is not designed for good battery life.

[Kernel]Alternative CM6/Ruby Kernel

Hey folks,
It was requested of me to make a thread regarding this. I have compiled an alternative kernel for aosp based roms. It should work with any of them.
1.0
All governors enabled, interactive patched in, conservative as default
Anticipatory scheduler vs. deadline ins stock cm6
Supports wired tethering
Latest source (may be newer than cm6?)
tun.ko support for vpn
More will be added later.
Thank you Koush, for providing me the fix for screen tearing and thanks sniffle, for helping me with making the kernel work with aosp

Any plans to get undervolt and oc?
Trying now, thanks...
Is there a place I can find the Stock CM6 kernal, in case I don't like this one? Ill report back in a little bit
Its slower than the CM6 kernal. I ran a linpack of 27 and quadrant of 1277. This was both running "performance" mode, and turning set cpu to the max which was 1000. I Am going to give it a try, maybe the battery life will make up for the performance loss. If not, nandroid here I come.

I just hope it fixes my WiFi shutting off constantly.
Seems to be really solid, a bit slower than cm-6 but also took care my screen flicker and haven't found any negatives yet (1.0+ hr up time) . Looking forward to some overclock variations. Thanks for the work adrynalyne.

Oh I didn't take it as such.
I just don't know why
Unless the scheduler differences are doing it. Its possible.
Did you say that the top speed showed 1000 in setcpu vs. 998400?
unstable for me on 9/10 nightly wifi on and no setcpu, 3 random lockups/reboots in past 2 hrs
32.61 linpack and 1341 quadrant. Its not much slower than cm-6. @adrynalyn, do you plan on bumping up the clock speeds? Mine is showing 1000 max btw. Thanks again

1k max for me as well. 998 didn't seem to be an option.
I'm getting similar performance as I get with kernels i compiled from koush's source where i only changed cpu speeds for overclocking and udervolting. Not as fast as koush's even when i bumped it up to 1.19Ghz. Which i couldn't figure out why since i used exact same source

i already did, raise the oc limit from 1504mhz/1325mV to 1556Mhz/1350mV
it doesn't seems instable or more heat. it can handle this, of course im not using this at default only in xoc mode
but im definetly not reccomended to raise the sdram freq above to 350Mhz. it can damage your hardware! the memory is very sensitive. maybe for a short time it will work really fast but long time cause irreversible damage.
the max gpu freq is 400Mhz
the max avp is 300Mhz
the max vde freq is 700Mhz
if you go above that levels you risk the potentital hardware damage.

[Q] Best Galaxy Ace Overclock Frequancy... And something else thanks

Hey guys
I know their probably another thread out there with this in it but... Yeah. But go ahead troll me lol, im still a bit of a noob.:silly:
Anyways, i have a Galaxy Ace s5830. I have Beats with smooth sense ROM. I had it upto 883MHz Yesterday but after i turned it off then back on ROM Toolbox reverted it to 806MHZ. 883MHz seemed a lot faster even though some people get theirs close to 1GHZ
My phone afterwards rebooting had issues such as the phone becoming un-responsive when i was even doing nothing (maybe the overclock to 883MHz had some short term effect?) But the phone seemed fine after safely turning it off then back on several times. Still works perfectly i got scared when it started to become un-responsive. But it works well now i have also used pimp my ROM, and the scripts work like a charm. Especially the call quality one (it uses bravia engine or something?). But with pimp my ROM wi-fi and network tweaks it completely broke wi-fi saying wi-fi connecting... Then saying under the network name 'Error'. Dam it took so long to get the IP address then said error like i said lol
At the frequency 883MHZ the phone seemed stable and faster than ever before, i did change it in small increments
So just wondering, what is the safe and most reliable frequencies to set it at? I currently use 225Min and 806 Max. With the userspace governer.
I know the terms of ' Safe ' and overclock don't mix (sorta like water and my dads S2 :crying: ).
Im also considering buying a 2450MAH battery from ebay for about 5.99 AUD. Any suggestions on should it be okay and better? But i mainly would like to knwo about the overclcoking lol.
So yeah, basically what is a good frequency to set it at? Is 883MHZ okay? Am i going to fry it out or completely brick or damage the phone or cpu if i set it at 883MHZ? Would love to buy a new phone but i need to save im only 14
So yeah please help me and you could help others too. Please be welcomed to troll me
I plan on having this phone another 3-4 Months before i consider buying the S2 or Galaxy note when their cheap (like really cheap)...
Like i said please help, and feel welcomed to troll me when you do help :highfive:
Man i feel like a Rebel when i overclock

Right now I am just using the stock one. I personally wouldn't change my battery to anything other than stock, but people have reported that 1500mAh or 1600mAh work well. I wouldn't use anything that has a higher capacity than that though. Also, if it's very inexpensive it's probably not real.
Clocking actually goes on the rom. I've seen people having OC over 1gHz & still stable with the mad kernel but I gave up clocking as I didn't see much of a difference & also underclocking started giving me FCs on some heavy apps while it was all fair in the unclocked state. And again, there's no such thing as a best frequency. You find your own values. What works well for him might mess up your phone rebooting all by itself. Stock batteries are always fine & they also keep you under warranty. Anyone ever wondered why the phone manufacturers didn't implement clocking as a part of it ? Stability is the word. I've seen here, I've seen there. East or west, stock is the best ! Try keeping as close to stock as possible, just to have that extra touch of safety & stability

Hello all.
I was reading this thread and became interested in overclocking. In my case my device is:
Samsung Galaxy Ace GT-S5830L (labeled as GT-S5830 by CyanogenMod)
CyanogenMod-7.2.0-cooper stable (Android version 2.3.7)
Kernel 2.6.35.7-perf-CL882825 ([email protected] #21)
I was checking in CM settings -> Performance -> CPU settings that I could adjust min and max clockspeed, but in max frequency the maximum one is the same processor's speed, 800 MHz. So my kernel doesn't support overclocking.
After a search in the forums I found there are plenty of custom kernels for this legacy device. But I'm relatively new to the kernel world, so I wanted to ask you for advise. What custom kernel could I try for my device for overclocking? Or King Android, what custom kernel are you using?
It'd the first time I do the overclocking stuff, I'd like to try it to see if some higher quality mp4 videos (which are run by MX Player only in software acceleration) can run better, as well as some games and emulators.
I'm also kind of a noob as you can see. If you want to troll/scold me...
Thank you all.

Hi you can try FireKernel or BlackHawk kernel. Use the search function to find them easily. Both supports Overclocking and are made for CM7. [MAKE SURE THEY SUPPORT YOUR S5830L]
At the moment I'm with Democracy ROM which is based on unofficial CM7 and I don't really feel the need of overclocking. It is all smooth with firekernel at
Min 245
Max 806
Governor smartassv2
Sent from my... oh wait, who cares?
I did my search.
Maybe I forgot to mention I haven't installed a custom kernel before... Does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I already mentioned what CM7 I have installed. It's the "official" stable one.
Would OCing help to improve videos and games performance? i.e, faster, no lag...
You can set it to whatever your phone can handle. Mine can't go past 844Mhz otherwise apps start force closing and such. If your phone is completely stable at 883Mhz then you're good.
As for the battery, no. It's a fake. Buy a 1500mAh like I did. Works like a charm and it brought 3. Lasts a little longer and it's really amazing. Had it for a while now. Still have one in the pack, only been using 2 when I don't get to charge my phone. Really handy.

OCing helps the phone over all. But remember, without much free ram, OC won't really change much. You need a balance of ram and CPU. Like me, I use swap and OC to 844Mhz. Even if it's a low OC, it's still better than nothing.
1. @SuperAce609: I have 104 Mb free RAM out of 278 Mb total RAM. Mine is Galaxy Ace S5830L with CM 7.2. Would OC work for me? Up to what frequency?
And how can you have 600 Mb of RAM? Is your device really an Ace?
2. There's still a doubt I haven't been able to find out myself: does the kernel come as a file itself, or along a CM7 custom rom? And if it comes as a file itself, how can I install it? I was suggested FireKernel or BlackHawk ones...
Any help?

1.- Every Ace is diferent..some Ace's can go up to 960 Mhz while other just 844 Mhz, the thing is: try it yourself overclocking in small jumps. Swap is a small amount of memory of your SD card, that Android use it like if where RAM, but decreases SD card life...
2.- Some Kernel came Built in on Some particullary ROM's but generally cames on a CWM Flashable zip; FireKernel & BlackHawk are specially for CM7; In my opinion FireKernel is the best... And there are others like Battery Extender Kernel or NimsKernel but these Kernel are only for Stock ROM's...
I hope you find useful my info...
Thank you, Blake2893.
Then there's just 2 doubts left, if you don't mind.
There's a fair number of custom CM7.2 roms with FireKernel in the developer forum. Is there one you or someone else could say is the best in terms of stability and least number of bugs? Or is that something I should test myself in the S5830L?
The Ace S5830/S5830L has 278 Mb total RAM by default. If I understand well, you're implying I could modify SWAP partition in order to increase RAM and, probably if lucky, with this make OC work better. How can I do that? Do I also need a custom kernel/rom for that?
The best stable Roms so far are the stock GingerBread based ones... but if you aks me about CM7 there a few like Apocalypse rom(ICS styled ROM) with the FireKernel that suports swap I think...
and for Swap you only need a Kernel with Swap enabled and a SWAP Partition on your Sd card...
lets see im fine and stable with 979 mhz without reboot for 9 hours
overclock is depend on your hardware
best over clock freq.

The best and most stable overclock freq. is actually 906mhz-864mhz. It works like a charm mate! Try it.

Using CPU high frequencies is not recommended, your device's life will be reduced considerably

Choppy/Framerate Issue When Gaming?

Hello, everyone.
Thought I'd take this question to XDA, since I'm unsure if I have a defective unit or not.
I have a HTC One (obviously) and it's stock, unrooted 4.1.2, running the latest 1.29 update. But when playing some games, I've noticed that ever 2 or 3 seconds, I'd get some sort of...frame jump, or random choppyness when playing. It's not framerate lag as far as I can tell, and when running benchmark tests, they appear to be fine.
The games I have tried where I can see this issue are:
-Mini Motor Racing
-Ski Safari
-Temple Run 2
I don't game that often, but these are the games I mainly play when I do. I know that not all CPUs/GPUs are made equally, so some people may not have this issue, but some *hopefully* might.
But as I say, when I run an AnTuTu benchmark and watch the GPU benchmarks, I see no jitter or jumping.
I'm wondering if I have a defective GPU or not, and just wanted to see if people are in the same situation as me.
It could be that 4.1.2 doesn't have optimized GPU drivers for the Snapdragon S4 processor. 4.2.2 runs games like butter, but I think the GPU got a speedbump on that OS. I know you said your on stock, but try applying a custom kernel like from Faux, and see if it makes a difference, maybe OC the GPU a bit.

Interesting...I didn't know that, I'll definitely give a custom kernel a try. Thanks

It's not about drivers, it's about heat throttling. HTC somehow decided that when the CPU hits 40 degrees everything should slow down to keep below that target. Which is bonkers considering many countries have ambient temps of 30+, and the speed of the monster in the One. With custom kernels you can adjust this setting and to delay the throttling.

Everyone does if it hits 40c ElementalX kernel allows it to hit 55c with the Run Hot option I believe

Thing is, when the phone is cold and below temps and I start a game, it's still pretty jumpy. So I don't think it's that.
I got the same problen..

Custom roms, or stock rom modification?

Hi,
im on stock rom, with bootloader unlocked and root installed. my deivce is still very hot even after system configurations, so id like some advice on how to tweak the kernel or improve performance, make it not overheat, install custom roms or delete system apps and so on.
Ive tried uninstaller system applications or bloatware, tweaking the kernel with CPU Tuner, installing and configuring the L Speed app, who i was someone had awesome resaults with here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/themes-apps/one-to-tweak-apps-l-speed-t3350288
i only get around 2 hrs of screen on time with my deice, and a lot of heat, i saw it over 80 degrees yesterday...
id like some good optimization and battery life for the device, as im not able to do so now...
thanks in advanced

Ive been using that firmware sins the day it released (a weak ago almost)? but no change there...
what i have done now is done some heavy modifications to the kernel and some CPU governors.
I flashed this Kernel: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-z4/development/kernel-andropluskernel-t3392772
the kernel works like a dream after under-clocking it with this program: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.grarak.kerneladiutor&hl=no
Used the "alucard" governor, CPU is sitting around 60 degrees when using the camera, and its a bit laggy, but much more survivable that it was before...
This Kernel is the best you can do, perhaps you can try to deactivate one or two of the big cores.

I never tweaked anything but mine is only hot when I play heavy games and record video for more than 20 mins (720p)
Anyway your lag is too much or just a little bit???
And one thing I use stamina mode whenever I'm about to do something CPUy
So try it without tweaks and tell me what's the result.

I get the stamina thing, id do that too if i did not need the screen brightness
The laggs are not small, im talking CPU om 80 degrees an so hot that i can not touch top backside of the phone
and thats withou any tweaks on MM .244 with everything stock. Ive also tried it with root, but really that does not make any differense, i need to edit the kernel to be able to use the camera, or else it will shut down when recording in 720p.
Anyways, underclocking the device for me, actualle made it faster in my case, i have no idea why makes no sense, but there is no throtteling and cpu struggles when underclocking it, so now it relly smooth, a lot smoother than on stock .244 MM,
Hope it help!

Well it gets hot but I don't mind about the heat, I'll throw it in a glass of water or inside the refrigerator if it's too hot [emoji48] . And I didn't underclock it. It's still running stock governor.

I dont mind the heat as well, but it is throttling in my day to day use applications, that's what's bothering me?
