Noob question but what does changing dpi settings do and whhat are advantages/disadvantages I see people talking about changing this and wondering why?

Changing dpi all in your screen will be smaller than stock.
good→better looking
bad → some apps stock and not doesnt have compatibility (for example dialer isnt in the center of the screen.)
So would recommend to change this on my note? Also what would be the best setting?
Also would this make apps crash if they not compatible?
Thanks for your reply and help

Hello
I have been using the golauncher ex on my Note and for some reason there is a lag in the home screen transition and also the general functioning of the phone has become slower. It works perfect on the stock touchwiz launcher. Can anyone please tell me why this is....and if there is anyway to fix it.
U ll have to root your phone.. These launchers apparently have this lag issue which can be eliminated by rooting your phone.. No lag with a rooted phone whatsoever...

cannot confirm this, "only" rooting without changing some stuff afterwards wont gain you anything...
launcher lag can be reduced by tweaking it's settings, use a different kernel with proper governor and settings (search the forum, i could recommend abysnote 3.6, lulzactive, ramp up 4, max. 1,6GHz) or consider a change to 240 DPI mode (through build.prop edit or app which does this for you): but 240 DPI has some issues (dialer, smemo, snote,... wont work perfect)!
I meant rooting ur phone to flash custom roms...

I haven't heard anything like what you describe for SGN. Does the problem continues on all dpi changes? Have you tries 260?

This app will solve all your problems https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.birdapi.android.dpipro the 'fix market' options lets you install a customised version of the market that tricks it into thinking your using a dpi of your choice
Love my Galaxy Note, but wish I could fit more onto my massive screen at times. On other devices such as the Nexus 7, changing the DPI will enable a tablet UI? Is this the same on the Note, so if I were to root and change to a lower DPI will tablet apps run?
Is it safe to do this, or will it ruin pre-built in apps such as S-Memo and the dialer/other phone apps?

I don't want to change ROMs, as I need the Samsung S-Pen apps. I like their functionality and use them to map out homework and my day-to-day schedule. Can't lose them. Nope, just wondering if changing the DPI would enable tablet UI and have it work properly. If not, then I won't bother. Not too worried, just would be a nice thing to have if possible to do!
Changing dpi won't turn your phone into a tablet it will just simply make things smaller so you can fit more on the screen

You can change your phone to tablet mode with any kernel/ROM. Can't remember the details but a quick search in Q&A and DEV should throw up the hack.

Tablet mode is 213 dpi and lower. It will work on stock gb roms, but has been disabled on stock ics.

This is an odd problem for me. I really love the Lux Auto-Brightness app and use it all the time but I've been having this issue that's now preventing Lux from doing it's job. Third-party app control of Screen Brightness doesn't work. If I go into the Android settings and change the brightness from there it works fine but every single Third-party app I try can't control my brightness. I can't even control the Screen Brightness from within MXPlayer anymore and that was working fine as well. I've thought maybe something is wrong with Lux but uninstalling and rebooting didn't fix anything. Does anybody have any ideas what's causing this?

I'm running rooted Stock 4.1.2 with only mod being the change of dpi to 160. I've made no other mods.

Stupid question but did you try changing the dpi back to the original setting? If so and it didn't change anything I would just do a dirty flash of stock rom. Changing dpi can screw up a lot of things.

Changing the dpi didn't help. Doing a dirty flash is an idea but I'd prefer trying something less extreme before doing that. It'd be a pain to re-setup root and things just to get brightness control fixed. At that point I'd probably just move on to a Custom ROM.
