Can you flash ROMs without root?
What twrp version is best for this device? Thanks

Yes. You do have to have your bootloader unlocked though. Most custom ROMs come rooted once you flash them.

I'm no stranger to this....just making sure. Lol. How can I sideload a ROM? There's no o.s on mine. Do I go to a cmd prompt and type su...then adb push.....? I've always had issues with adb side loading. Thanks.

No problem. I moved this conversation into its own Q&A thread.
I've never had to ADB sideload before. If I remember right, the one time I had that issue, I was able to copy the ROM file over through the custom recovery. So, you'd put TWRP on first, boot into it, and then copy it over that way.
Since you have no OS, you could also run the RUU to completely reset the phone back to stock. Then unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, copy the new ROM over, and then wipe and flash in TWRP.
I don't think Facepalm still works. If the phone has an older bootloader, one of the older methods might work, but the only s-off method that works on newer bootloaders is called Sunshine.

You can also adb push a rom while in recovery.
1. Download said rom, place it in your adb/fastboot folder.
2. Open a cmd window from said folder.
3. type adb push RomName.zip /sdcard/
It will take a few minutes to complete so be patient.
4. Wipe data/cache/dal cache/system
5. Flash rom.
6. Profit.

OK. Every time I tried that, it kept saying error. All drivers were installed..drivers for while in BL, normal mode and recovery were installed on my PC. Maybe I typed it wrong. After .zip, there is a space then /sdcard/...right?

You'll definitely want to update that as I've heard older versions can have issues with newer ROMs. Not sure about that particular one.

@Sloth might have kept up with this better. AFAIK, those Rumrunner will still work if you are on an older firmware, but I'm not sure.

RumRunner might work if it is still on one of the earlier updates, Firewater has been discontinued, if RR does not work you will have to use SunShine to s-off.

Yeah, TWRP. 2.6.x is pretty old. Since you've hacked a few HTC devices in the past, this device isn't much different except without an SD card, you can't use a specially named zip (like PGxxxx.zip) to flash firmware. It must be done with fastboot.

4.3 update messed up my phone

I have rooted HTC one google edition. I received a new official updated that I installed through twrp, after installation it told me that root access was lost and i could restore it by pressing restore root access option. Since then i cant get past the Google screen. My phone basically gets to Google screen then restarts, gets to Google screen and restarts. I tried factory reset, did not help. What should i do?
If you have a Google Edition rooted phone, it shouldnt have installed the OTA with a custom recovery installed. You'll likely have to use the RUU in the original dev thread. you'll want to backup your sdcard via adb cause the RUU will wipe everything.

Just use this, its either pre-rooted or unrooted, follow the instructions but being on a GE One you should already be all set to flash it.

The RUU won't help anyway. It's not signed therefore will only install on s-off phone.

what does device manager say?
if it says something like QHUSB_Download mode, you're screwed, get it swapped out
if you can get to the bootloader, you can probably install a recovery again and install a stock 4.2.2 or 4.3 rom and get back up and running.

Learned the hard way.
Your phone is not recognized, because you haven't updated your ADB and Fastboot files on your computer. Once, you do that.. You will need to download hboot 1.44 that gunnyman has in the 4.3 thread via RUU. After that is done find yourself, the RUU from whatever provider your phone is running under.. Ex: Dev or Tmo or ATT etc etc.. That should fix you up. I did this to my device once messing around with it.. But my problem also was with a locked boot loader that had 4 exclamation triangles on each corner.. No boot screen for start up even came up.. Just back to the boot loader of doom.

then all is not lost. you're having either a driver issue or trying to use a usb 3 port or something like that.
boot to recovery
type adb devices
if it gives a number you can sideload a ROM.
download this rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2390346
it's stock rooted 4.3
sideload it in twrp
start the sideload mode in twrp
type adb sideload then the name of the rom. the rom will push to the phone and then install.

Help, I need somebody! (Serious problems restoring original firmware)

Hey guys,
I'm really sorry to bother everyone but I just spent 10 hours straight trying to get my HTC One back to its original state.
I'm really frustrated as I have tried 15 different tutorials and have about 1 million tabs open right now.
- I tried the whole re-locking thing and tried flashing a RUU (tried so many different ones but always some signature error. And with exe's I should get the right utility because it's the wrong bootloader). I don't even know what's the right one. Here's the getvar version-main I get: 1.29.401.12
- I somehow wiped everything and can't even get my phone as an external flash drive.
- I read I should have S Off whatever that is, but for that I needed to re-flash a rom. I can't even get that to work anymore. I tried to sideload it. It worked...but there's nothing on the phone except an ever turning cyanogenmod wheel.
- I took a pic of my bootloader screen, maybe you guys can decipher what there's to be done.

Okay, your hboot is 1.44 (April 2013), so you should be able to achieve S-Off using revone.
can you please post a "fastboot getvar all" (remove IMEI and serialno), and confirm your bootloader is unlocked

Sorry for having to rewind a little, but can you let me know your goal?
1- hboot -> OK
2- getvar -> OK
3- you can achieve S-Off using revone with a Sense 5 / Android 4.1.2 based ROM
I need to go now, and may not be back till Saturday, in the meantime, if you need to get you phone up & running just use: http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/guru_reset_m7_1-29-401-13-zip/ (unselect "stock recovery" during installer) or any other custom ROM out there.

Ah I think I know what your problem is ... 1.29.401.12 doesnt have a full RUU file anywhere ... can u tell me the filename you tried running (RUU exe?) ..
So what you need is ...
1. TWRP/CWM Recovery installed and working
2. TWRP/CWM Backup ROM file for 1.29.401.12
I could only google and find CWM backup for your ROM so you need to flash CWM recovery first (I assume you know how)
Download your ROM backup from here -> http://www.htc1guru.com/dld/m7-cwm-nandroid-backup-cid-htc__102-1-29-401-12-2013-05-16-zip/
adb push this to your sdcard and use restore option from CWM... also best if you wipe data/factory reset first since you had CM on it

No need to relock
i don't know how adb push works. i tried following a tutorial but it says to mount sdcard which i don't have. i only have system, data and cache.
i then re-locked, then tried to flash via fastboot oem reboot and flash zip.
that didn't work because of "signature verify fail".
i'd love to try adb push, if you could be so nice to tell me how i'd have to proceed.
It would be easier if you download a Custom ROM and then in CWM choose Install -> Sideload
And then from PC , adb sideload yourfile.zip
This should load the Custom ROM ... it will be easier to transfer and manage the nandroid backup files once the OS is loaded

yes i tried that but it does not work. and i don't get why.
1. i sideloaded a cm stable file.
2. the file had been renamed sideload.zip
3. i started the install and it said successful.
4. when i boot the phone, the cm wheel turns and turns infinitely.
5. i tried a different rom (infection), it said succesful install, i re-booted but that darned cm wheel was still there turning and turning thinking "you like that huh?"
If you have nothing to save on sdcard , this is what I would do ...
1. Wipe System
2. Wipe Cache
3. Wipe Data
4. Wipe INternal Storage
And CWM Sideload should start the flashing immediately after transferring the zip file unless u r doing it some wrong way

It depends on the recovery, but it works in TWRP.
It is the ROM that is rooted, so if you sideload a non-rooted ROM and flash it, you will lose root. It seems you don't have a working ROM, so you don't "have" root.

Let me correct you. You had a custom ROM that was rooted.
My suggestion is to fix the problem.
I can't help you because:
1) I don't know what recovery you have
2) I don't know what tutorial you followed
3) I don't know in which way it is "not working"
I suggest you flash TWRP 2.6.3.4 and use adb sideload.

You need to get adb working on your PC or you could try what bored_stupid is suggesting. You are a long why from requiring supersu at this point.

You don't even have a working rom so why are you still talking about root??? You don't need root to use a usb otg cable to flash a rom.
Make sure you have the latest android sdk installed on your computer and latest htc drivers.
Post the output of fastboot getvar all minus imei/sn

It is problem globally! Google is experiencing major error with sync servers.
or try this: go to accounts.google.com and in security (left panel) go to the list of 3rd party applications that are using your Google credentials and start revoking the applications that you no longer use.

Issues with unrooting

I am trying to apply an update that was pushed to my Verizon Nexus 6. I was using Nexus Root Toolkit V2.0.5 developed by Wug, to do the unroot and re-lock the boot loader. It went fine no issues, have the correct build of android plugged into the toolkit. Rebooted, and I used root checker to verify that root is gone, and it is not, it is still rooted. I can unroot using supersu, and root checker confirms that root is gone. After locking the bootloader, I go and try to apply the update and it still fails. I am able to restart the phone and use it, but I do not understand what is going on with it. Anybody have any thoughts?

for the couple thousandth time it has been mentioned here, you can not apply an update if any stock files have been changed. with you having root at one point, your files have been changed. and to really unroot, you have to flash a factory image. otherwise, even tjough you unrooted, your files are still changed.

Yeah hey thanks hadn't seen that a million times or so. I know updates cannot be flashed while rooted or unlocked. I am trying to unroot by flashing a factory image and it is not taking, no errors come up in the log and it reboots fine.

Yes I am. I had locked the bootloader and tired to apply the update and that didn't work. I currently have an unlocked boot but did not root yet, was waiting for feedback from here.

ok, boot into the bootloader, connwct via usb to your computer, the type fastboot devices. at that point, it should list your phone via a number. if it does, then its all connected right. then you can flash the factory image, but do not use the flash-all script, flash them all individually.
Ok thanks, Does it work the same if you do it through Wugs tool, clicking the flash stock + unroot button, and letting it run the scripts?

ill be honest.. its best to do it the first time manually. that way you learn to do things that can fix your phone in the future, plus tool kits can and fo mess up occasionally, which make things hard to fix. i tell everyone that they can use toolkits, but they wont learn anything and will remain clueless. if you already know what you are doing, then tool kits are fine
I concur. I have used "the" toolkit to see what happens. Have had multiple failures using toolkit and always had to revert to fastboot to fix. Might as well use fastboot up front. Saves a lot of time and headaches.

are you flashing with flash-all or are you flashing each image individually. dont use flash-all, flash them individually.
Share a screen print of the command prompt, with the command you executed, and the error message?
was doing the flash-all. is the command "fastboot flash system system.img" minus the quotes? If that doesn't work I will try and drop and drag see if that works

You don't need to put the system.img there. Please do read general > sticky roll-up thread > adb and fastboot...
...some time.
I guess my issue was in my head. I am so damn concerned that I am going to do something wrong and brick the phone that I am afraid to run the commands. I just flashed the system.img had it write in 4 different parts.... and it worked fine, rebooted and everything.... so far.

Yes the flash-all.bat can't break up the image. Has something to do with how it sees the partition. Have heard that fastboot in SDK 23+ has fixed this problem. Have not confirmed as I do each individually anyway depending on what I want to do.
---------- Post added at 12:13 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:07 PM ----------
Only way you're gonna possibly brick is flash wrong image to wrong partition. Not sure that even that can be corrected with fastboot as long as the one you bork isn't the bootloader.

Unrooting Verizion nexus 6 on 5.1.0 build number LMY47E

I have been rooted for a few months now and need to get a replacement phone from vzw. I have been searching for the better part of 2 days on how to completly unroot my nexus 6. i used the method used in "[HOW-TO] The Nexus 6 All-In-One Beginner's Guide By xBeerdroiDx" to root it. Which installed TWRP, with any other phone ive rooted i could just go to SuperSU and click full unroot and it would do it. That is not the case now. Can i get a step by step directions from someone on how to unroot my phone please.
Thanks in advance.

sure.. get the factory image from the google site, download it to your computer, unzip it, then flash each part of it individually via fastboot while youre in your bootloader. thats the only real way to "unroot" a device.every othet way removes root but keeps the changed files. so they think that youre still rooted.

nope, thats it. but, to finish, you want to make sure that you will boot first, then youll have to relock your bootloader at the very end

if you want the phone clean, you will need to use -w command in fastboot to wipe all the data also.

ive never wiped before flashing a factory image(i assumed it does it automatically before flashing each partition), but that can be a good idea as well :good:

-w only wipes the data partition as far as i know.
i havent dissected the files for this phone, but all past device img's i have, has a wiping command of some sort in there somewhere.
its usually something like "erase userdata" or similar.
the files are .tar and .tgz my computer wont recognize them am i doing something wrong?

you need fastboot(and adb for other things). you can get that from google or you can search google for a smaller download. its in the sdk( i believe), but that download is huge. i installed a fastboot for dummies version a few years back, with adb as well, and ot turned out to be only 35mb.
