So I have been a die hard Samsung guy since the beginning of Galaxy s. Today I decided to go with a nexus6 from at&t. I know zero about the phone and the Motorola **** tied to it. I am very familiar with odion and and using custom Roms and recoveries with my note phones. My general question is, will any ROM work on any nexus 6 or is it service provider depending...? Also if anyone could post a link to the best root method for the AT&T Nexus 6 I'd greatly appreciate it!

Any nexus 6 rom will work with any nexus 6. Some might not work well on sprint.
As for root learn to use adb/fastboot. You flash recovery via fastboot and then you can flash root via recovery (I recommend TWRP) . It all starts with the bootloader unlock done via fastboot which WILL wipe the phone.

http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/how-to-nexus-6-one-beginners-guide-t2948481 is a great guide to learn how to root / unlock bootloader etc. Don't use toolkits as they typically don't teach you anything.
All ROMs should work with Sprint at this point, unless they're using the AOSP APN list instead.

It doesn't matter, it'll work for any carrier.

The guide zephiK linked to is great. Once your setup, unlocked, rooted and have a custom recovery; do a full nandroid backup then try any of the great roms and kernels here (they are not carrier specific, they work with all of them);
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/development and http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/orig-development
If you don't like it or get stuck, just boot into recovery and restore your backup. Have fun!

you dont use adb to unlock your device nor to root it. you use fastboot to unlock the bootloader and to flash a recovery, then your new recovery to flash supersu(root). so adb isnt part of rooting, at all.

Just bought one from Verizon, but 5.1d is already installed, am I screwed as far as rooting?
On Verizon you want to be on E. Versions have nothing to do with Root

Dude you really need to read up on this. No you are not screwed, this is the easiest phone in the world to root.
I tried reading up, but everything I saw had to do with rooting 5.0.x, but not 5.1. Does that same wug method work? I think that's how I spell it

this works on any nexus at any time..
1. fastboot oem unlock via fastboot while your in the bootloader. this will unlock the bootloader.
2. flash a custom recovery via fastboot while you ate in the bootloader
3. flash the latest supersu iwiththe new recovery that you just installed
4. reboot with root.
the basics, but thats the right way to root any nexus device.
Did you do that with the wugs toolkit?

via fastboot, while ypu are connected to a computer and are in your bootloader, you type.. fastboot oem unlock. this will unlock your bootloader(and will wipe your whole phone.
and while you are in fastboot and connected to a computer while in your bootloader, type.. fastboot flash recovery recoveryname.img. to flash a recovery.
AND.. welcome to xda
What he said ^^^^^
Or you can use one of the toolkits. Personally, I prefer the method via fastboot. You will learn more by doing it "the old fashioned" way. And yes, welcome to XDA!

One thing to add this, starting with the Nexus 6 and 9 you need to boot into the phone, unlock developer options, and flip the switch on "allow OEM Unlock." Otherwise the oem unlock command in fastboot will fail.

If you intent to flash a lot of roms keep "OEM unlocking" enabled in developer options!!! If will safe you from being locked out from your google account for 72 hours inn case google finds your login attempts suspicious

I haven't found a bad one. Chroma, Cataclysm, Pure Nexus, Xtra smooth, many others. Try different ones to get a feel for what they do. You will discover that each has its own focus and ways of doing things.

Hello all
I have had my phone for almost a year and have recently decided to root my nexus 6. I have root 3 phones in the past: Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 5, and S4. I have followed all the steps on this thread: . I have checked the box to enable OEM unlock but when I boot in to the bootloader it says locked.

nexus 6 and nexus 6p use different methods now-a-days..
boot into your bootloader, connect to a computer, turn on fastboot, type fastboot devices to see if fastboot sees your device, if it does then type.. fastboot oem unlock. before anything though, go into developer settings and enable the oem unlock option. thats how you do it on a nexus 6.

Yes. The url was still in a Chrome tab.
I thought the article is generic enough to answer.
And ...... some laziness ?

If you missed the part in the article where it says to run fastboot oem unlock you probably also missed the part where it says that issuing that command will wipe your data. Make sure you have your important things backed up.
