I was playing around with my evo and used my nexus one to film some bootloader stuff and noticed that there was a purple led flashing wildly in the camera shot that I couldn't see with my bare eyes.
As it turns out the nexus one camera picks up on the ir from the proximity sensor, ego does the same. You can point your nexus cam at any ir remote at home to verify, its kinda weird. Any idea why they would do this?

Pretty much all digital camera sensors can do that. Try looking at it with your webcam. Digital cameras and SLRs and such may have an IR filter to get rid of that.

True story.
Its pretty much how the Wii works. There is no special camera in there. Those cctv security cameras can use IR for night vision; and I have used a camera and remote as a sort of night vision before.

I've also built a ghetto night-vision set using an an old camcorder viewfinder for the display, a cheap camera phone camera sensor for the camera, and a bunch of IR LEDs to provide "invisible" illumination. Worked pretty well :-D
Almost all camera sensors pick up IR ^^
Try with some phones or webcam, and you'll see =)
Edit : The only way to stop the IR, is to put a filter
After lil more than 1wk, I still discover a few new things about this amazing phone. Particularly the built in sensors. I read somewhere that S4 is the first smartphone with hygrometer to measure humidity. Cool.
But i have no idea that there's also the magnetometer is there also to measure magetic flux and field strength. I had fun moving it close to electronic equipments and an old phone case with magnetic clasp and see how the reading changes. testing near MRI is of course not rec.
Of course the barometer and thermometer are there too.
Between the two apps: weather signal and weather station, all these sensor readings can be accessed live... amazing.... forget about accessing s health to read sensor...
the only thing iphone got above s4 is the fingerprint reader. But i am quite certain that samsung won't let that by on their next iteration of the galaxy... Maybe they can figure out how to make a pulse reader and pulse oximeter sensor to build into the phone? I think built in body function sensors could be the next big things...
Btw, i am about to enclose my S4 into a watertight case. I imagine the barometer, thermometer and hygrometer will be a little less accurate .

I showed the s4 sensor readings on weather station..... my friends thought I was just pulling the local weather numbers off the internet and said their iPhones could do that too... I don't think they completely believe me that the numbers on the s4 were not from internet....
How does the thermometer measure anything but the battery temperature? I figured that the battery temp would overshadow anything else it could measure. Maybe my phone just runs too hot?

I've just encased mine in a watertight lifeproof knockoff. So now these sensors are not as functional. I do see yr point about battery temp and i think weather station actually has a pro ver which try to compensate for even the presence of battery heat. I am fairly certain though that the sensor doesn't just measure your battery temp and can't measure anything else....
We all know about the video demonstrating the so-called hacking of Samsung's iris scanner. What I want to know is whether or not anyone else in any part of the world has since successfully replicated the hack. (I don't care which Samsung phone was used, as long as it was successful. Any?)
I ask here because I couldn't find anything about this online, besides the original video.
I want evidence that it can be done, or, evidence that it cannot be done (at least so easily). That's what I'm looking for.
AND...... I've thought about this for some time...
If someone is trying to take a high-quality infrared photo of my eyes while I'm wearing GLASSES, could it also fool my iris scanner? When I'm trying to unlock with my glasses on, I'd have to open my eyes pretty wide for it to work, whereas without my glasses I don't have to make that extra effort. So I guess maybe my glasses would offer some protection from infrared cameras??
I have tried and failed. Took pictures with s7e and with my Nikon dslr. Printed high quality photos and used phone screen. Only way to unlock was using my real eyes. Just my experience, I am not a real hacker or anything , just curious .

Did your devices support infrared? You'd need to capture an infrared image of your eyes to do the hack.
Part of the appeal of a fingerprint scanner is to be able to use it in situations where you can't use face unlock.
I use my phone at literally all times throughout the day. My biggest concern is unlocking it via face unlock when there's no light. I use my phone in bed while my wife is asleep and find myself constantly locking it, unlocking it, etc.
So will it work in the dark? Normal face unlock on most Android phones just use the camera to match a face, but does the Pixel 4 do the exact same thing, or is there a bit more technology in it that will somehow scan my face in the dark and unlock it?
Any insight would be great!
That's one of the main reasons I got this phone, believe it or not. I can't stand unlocking in the middle of the night with those god-awful f*cking optical fingerprint sensors, blinding the sh*t out of you. So, yeah, I'm pretty sure it works in the dark since they used infrared cameras, the soli radar sensor, flood illuminator and the dot projector.

Yes
I turned all the lights off. You do have to press to lock button. It lights up the screen and unlocks it instantly

Which phones have a lit fingerprint sensor? My Pixel 2 XL is just a drab, dark circle on the rear of the phone.

This. Which is unfortunately what I have been stuck with, to date. The 31st can't come fast enough.
Not only will your phone unlock in the dark, but if you face your phone towards a mirror and get close to the mirror, it will unlock from your reflection (yes, even in the dark).

That depends on the type of fingerprint sensor. You seem to be referring to the under the screen kind of which there are two types. There are the ones that basically use a camera sensor to take a picture of your finger through the screen. Those are less secure and do require the screen to light up. There is also the better one from Qualcomm that uses ultrasound to make a 3D mapping of your fingerprint. It is more secure and doesn't require the screen to light up. The Galaxy S10 and Note 10 have the ultrasonic type. I think OnePlus uses the optical type but I'm not sure.
I really would have liked it the Pixel 4 had the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor instead of (or many in addition to) the dumb face unlock.

Yes, I am aware that there are two different types of FP sensors currently available for in screen operation. Ultrasonic being the better and more secure of the two, and obviously works in more conditions than the optical sensor, but unfortunately it's slow as hell as of right now. Which is something I don't understand about OnePlus, why they couldn't use the ultrasonic and just work on the software. Part of the reason why I'm ditching one plus, they're not really good when it comes to software, but they have no problem throwing a sh*t ton of hardware at it to try and make you forget that fact. IMO, optical was last year's tech, companies should be working on making ultrasonic more functional and affordable. As for adding one to the P4, I guess that's user preference. I feel the face unlock will be enough, for me.

My only guess on why One Plus went for the optical sensor is the same reason it doesn't get IP certification.....cost. The ultra sonic sensor probably costs more than the optical sensor. I haven't really had a chance to use either one myself but in the videos I've seen of Samsung phones the ultra sonic sensor does seem to work pretty quick.

Lol, it nearly has. It has been everything I can do not to chuck this POS against a wall. I have even considered selling it and buying a burner, it's so bad. P4xl is due Thursday, so another day or two shouldn't be too bad. Stoked
