So my question is... can I text over wifi?
Here are the details: In two of my college classes, I get no signal, but have great wifi access. I want to be able to use something to text over wifi while in those classes. I just installed google voice after a quick google search... but it seems like you have to change this to be a permanent default messaging app (which I havent even tried to do). Most posts Ive run across have been people that want to text for free, but I have unlimited so thats not an issue. I really like handcent, so is there a way to text over wifi or an app just for those two classes or while Im at school or something without having to change the default messaging app 2x a day?
Thanks in advance for responses =]
You can't send SMS messages over a Wi-Fi connection with your default messaging app, so that's out of the question. You can use GV, but it you don't need to make it your default messaging app to send or receive anything. If you bring your computer to class, you could use Gmail, the Google Voice website(Which would be faster than your phone), AIM, or you could just not text anyone in those couple of classes and pay attention. In fact, that's what I recommend.
Pingchat is free, awesome and multiplatform (android, blackberry, iphone). Your friends also need a smartphone of course.

Okay MOM haha. Ill see If I can use GV for just a temporary fix... and Id rather not bring my laptop to school, its an inconvenience. My phone fits in my pocket. My classes are really easy and sometimes my text message conversations are much more interesting.

Ill try that out, I dont really like the fact that all my friends have to have it installed, but thats definitely a start!! thank you for the advice
I actually use GV as my primary form of SMS (I opt out of SMS on my plan) for unlimited SMS and free SMS to Canada.
If you do go that route, I recommend using this older version:

The newer version has an annoying lag to it.

Is there an easy way to turn the older version on or off? What if your not on wifi?

Thats seems okay, the only problem with that is that I would have to ask all of my friends to install that, and not all of them have phones that can install apps. So that is a good idea, but I dont think it would work.
I have a small SMS plan with ATT. I downloaded the GV app and leave it running. I see no lag for what I use it for.

So I tried google voice and I can still make outgoing text messages without having it be my default app. So I think this still wins for people in my situation. I had a heck of a time getting a google number though, I ended up just doing it through my gmail and it was much easier.
Thanks guys for all the helpful advice!!
I am looking for an app that can sync calls and SMS form my android phone to TP.Need it even when i have the phone in my pocket and tablet in my hands or even when the phone is at the next room.Live in Greece so i can't have Google voice.Any suggestion?
PS.i use cm7
I'm interested in this as well for the SMS part of it. On the touchpad my android phone and webos talk well and SMS shows up but on the android side not so much. Will pair but not connect.

Paid app SyncSMS might help u
Both TextTab and Tablet Talk will do this. Both can sync over bluetooth, and tablet talk can sync over wifi as well. Both have similar interfaces and will notify you when you recieve a text or a call, and you can reply to texts directly from the app. Tablet talk has popup notifications as well(similar to go sms or sms popup). Both apps are paid apps on the market(Textab is $2 and Tablet Talk is $3), although there is a very limited free version of Textab.
Tablet talk worked the best. Was seamless and painless and connected right away. The ui needs some improvement but its not that bad. It needs to be themed better. Use the light theme and not the dark theme as not everything shows up right in dark...at least on miui it does not. Can't speak for a cm based rom. But get that one it seems to be the most painless and smoothest for Bluetooth connectivity
Again, I'm only talking about SMS usage. For other usage I can't give input I only wanted it for SMS communication. I am using go SMS as well it seems pretty flawless even with the third party messaging app warning.

Mighty text works
Been using MightyText with my HTC EVO <=>TP for a while and I really like it. I had it running on 10.1, 10.2 and now kitkat.
Ok folks,
I have my new Samsung Gear Live and its paired to my HTC One M7
Although I'm sure that I should be able to reply to SMS messages, the option is not available.
I can say "OK Google" "text fred bloggs" from the home screen and that works.
Do you think the limitation is something to do with HTC's SMS client?
Rik
I have the Live w/HTC One M8.
I'm inclined to believe that the reason my replies work is because I have (just started) SMS texting via Hangouts. I only switched from my normal texting client because I knew that the Wear watches would work out of the box w/Hangouts.
That said, Hangouts is a pretty lousy texting app, but I like that it's baked into Wear.

Ok so I don't have my Gear live yet (is on the truck out for delivery), however I asked a similar question and for what I understand you won;t be able to replay to the SMS until the App is updated with the new API to support that. I believe the only one that currently support that is Google own's "Hangouts".
On Google's promotional video for Android Wear, where the guy is on the bus, he gets a text message and says, "reply - be there in 2" and the message is sent.
That does not seem to work but you can make a swipe until you get a "reply" screen that enables you to speak a reply.
Thanks for the info chaps.
I don't even have the swipe across to reply option - all I get is the open on phone option
The reply by voice is one of the key things I was hoping for.
Naughty Google promo's grrrrrr.
Oh well - I suppose we are the beta testers
Same issue here with Gear Live and HTC One M7. I can "Open on phone" when I receive an SMS, but no reply options. Assuming this is a limitation of the HTC Messaging client not being "Wear-aware".... although FWIW I can reply to SMS natively on my M7 via Google Glass, which is essentially using the same set of APIs as far as I know.
So I switched (grudgingly) to Hangouts as my SMS client and all works fine. (Interestingly, the HTC SMS client as well as Google Voice continue to stay synched with Hangouts in the background, so I can still use the GV app or Web interface from other devices.)

no i think it needs to support android wear specifically. hangouts and evolve both do as of right now, i'd imagine most of the big apps will follow suit sooner rather than later since they stated that it was minimal amount of code that needed to be added in
A little disapointed to read this (mine will be here thursday) but dont forget guys. Updates, updates, updates!! Im sure it will work soon.

if the sms app you use don't support wear, i'd get in contact with the devs, it's almost a trivial amount of coding that needs to be done to support wear!

i wonder if will be updated with wear support since google uses hangouts now and i don't see them adding wear support to aosp apps that they have essentially abandoned.
maybe see if the 8sms devs can add support since it's very similar to aosp messaging?

When I swipe, I see REPLY, but when i press it, it basically just goes to a check mark.. doesn't even let me say anything.

What app? Apps need to be updated to trigger voice input from Wear notifications, so it might be opening the "reply" screen on your phone. If not, I have no idea.

The stock text message app on the Samsung Galalxy S5
I'm using Hangouts on an N5, but anytime that I try to send a message, it defaults to SMS (through Hangouts) instead of a chat message, which is what I want. Even if I'm replying to a chat that someone just sent me, it tries to send it as an SMS. Quite annoying.

that won't work until samsung updates their apps to include wear support.
as of right now the only apps i know of are evolve sms and hangouts
when i initially received my watch, I added most of the apps to my G2. I'm using contacts+ for SMS which has wear compatibility. works fine for verbal replies from the watch.
Does anyone have any recommendations on any keyboard apps? I want to be able to respond to text messages via the watch using a keyboard.
Also, what text message app do you use?
I use "Coffee" - works very well. Only keyboard I've seen is on Wear Mail and it's just too cumbersome for more than a couple words. I haven't seen a text messaging app with a keyboard but I'm sure they exist.
What do you guys prefer in regards to texting?
I find hangouts a bit choppy but seems like it has more features.

I have 2 gmail accounts work and personal and it is a pain in the butt looking for different contacts in hangouts because you can only use one account at a time they dont combine the contacts of the 2 accounts
It seems like Hangouts does not work with the Galaxy Gear (watches), huh?
my choice messenger will always be WhatsApp (messaging, voice/video clips, voice calling) for its simplicity, yet is pretty feature-packed. i hate what Talk has become (since it became Hangouts Messenger). but for voice or video calling, i ultimately prefer WeChat. the quality is really good and it holds on to a connection pretty well (doesn't disconnect so easily) when in poor signal conditions.

I like the way Google Messenger and Hangouts work with group messages but for right now I can't get with the lag that both app have so im sticking with the stock messaging app for the moment. if they update them to make the more fluent I will jump on hangouts. Google Messenger also have too many colors.
I went back to the stock messaging app, Google hangouts doesn't have quick reply, and it lags.

I noticed the new 4.0 version of Hangouts lags backing out of app and opening some MMS. Clearning cache/data and reverting to previous stock version fixes the lag.
I'm currently using Google messenger. It does lag a bit.

Textra
Yeah Google hangouts is really laggy I went back to messages. I'd type several letters before they'd register on screen

UPDATE : This man was right. Totally made a difference
I have this with Hangouts 4 and Swiftkey. Constant lag. But the Sammy messenger app is butt ugly.
I'm using hangouts due to the Google voice ans hangout integration. It is a bit laggy with swiftkey
I just started using textra, I like it so much more. Just had to disable it from turning the screen on.

Hangouts notifications were really inconsistent for me on the Note 3, so I'm not even going to bother testing with the N5. I have my Google Voice integrated into Hangouts, and I use it occasionally for work chatter, but nothing that requires any sort of reliability.
I only stick with stock apps if they off what I want, and that's mainly a Quick Reply feature. I was using Google Messenger as my SMS app because my last phone (One M8) did not have that built in. Since the Note 5 does have it, I found no need to use Google Messenger anymore. And I like the stock app cause I can quick reply while in landscape aswell. Google Messenger would only allow you to quick reply in portrait.

Check out an app called Gear Notifications. It will allow you to reply to hangouts messages. The device also has a thread on the gear s forum on xda.

If you are using the stock keyboard because you like google's speech-to-text, check out the swype xposed plugin 'SwypeTweaks.' Replaces the dragon voice with google's. I get lots of lag in several apps with the Samsung keyboard on my Note 5...Swype all the way for me.
