Hello,
I just bought Gear VR today and I connected it to my Samsung Galaxy S6 (6.0.1). I have successfully installed Oculus software and downloaded some apps, however when I connect my phone to the VR headset, I only see the black screen. When I remove the phone from the headset, it says "Calibrating Gear VR..." after which an X appears in the corner, and doesn't allow me to do anything. I have to force restart my phone as it doesn't respond to any other function.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Samsung Gear VR services, Oculus Home etc. but it didn't help. I also did a factory reset for my phone, to no avail. I've also spent many hours looking for a solution, but nothing works for me.
I am not sure whether it's my phone or my Gear VR headset, but something is not right. It seems that my phone is unable to run Oculus Home (or whatever it's supposed to run) when I connect it to the headset. I hear that "connect sound", but then the screen goes black and I can only restart it by holding volume down and power buttons.
Could you please tell me what to do?
Thanks!
I've found a workaround, if anyone reads this.
I made it work, not as it's intended to work, but all functions are working and that's fine for me. I basically enabled developer mode for Gear VR service which allows Oculus apps to be run without the headset. Then I connected it to the headset, which is then recognized as a mouse, allowing you to use headset's controls and touchpad.

Sure!
First, I downloaded SideloadVR. You need to create an apk that has your device ID and install it. So go to Google Play Store, download the app and then follow instructions to build the apk. After you build it, download it and install in your device. Doing this will allow you to enter developer mode for Gear VR apps (developer mode = running VR apps without headset).
After you're done installing it, go to Settings -> Applications -> Applications Manager and look for Gear VR Service. Tap on Storage, then select Manage Storage option. You will see a few things in the new menu, and now you need to tap 6 times on VR Service Version and developer mode should be enabled.
When you do that, you can go to your Oculus app and Enter VR, and it should work. You can also run pretty much any other VR app (that's not intended for Gear VR) this way.
I am not sure if I explained it well, but please let me know if it worked for you. If not, I'll be glad to help you as much as I can.

This is good information, I used it to get mine going in my note4 which has been an endless struggle. Only problem I'm having now is my track pad won't work and my phone isn't saying mouse connected. Is there a way to enable the mouse function when I connect it?

I don't know if you know this, but when you connect your phone to Gear VR, the phone screen light is controlled by the light/proximity sensor built-in in Gear VR (between the lenses and above them) and not of phone. So the screen lights up only when you wear it or cover this sensor by hands or something.

Updated my gear 1 to tizen and also my note 8 Ltd to 4.2.2 using the official Germany dom. ...
Watch pairs with phone both showing code but then......nothing.......tries to connect to watch and fails.....
am I missing something
please help cos right now I hate Samsung so much for making this gear not work
I had that happen while trying to flash a custom recovery and failing which resulting in the watch hard resetting itself. My phone would recognize and pair with the watch but it would go in an endless connecting spree. The solution is to go into your Gear manager and gear plugin app info on the phone or tablet and just clear the data. Or you could just uninstall/reinstall the app and it should do the trick.

So I went back to Null Rom 23 from Tizen because I got an Iphone 6 and wanted to at least use the watch with it somehow or other. This is probably a real dumb question(Most of mine are) but how Do I get past the screen at boot up where it is looking for a Samsung Phone with gear manager on it> I saw in a Video from "didi" I believe where his gear watch boots straight to the home screen without the annoying "play screen" showing how to connect watch to gear manager. Thank you all very much for answering my stupid questions... I did try and search forums for an answer but no luck. - DjSkipEllis
I try it before to connect my GG with iphone via bluetooth and it works.

Hi I just bought galaxy s8+ and gear vr 324 with controler. I have a problem with controler pointer dissapearing when opening oculus application with gear/phone on. It's visible for a few seconds and its dissapear. Home/previous/volume+- buttons still works, but I cannot see pointer and touchpad dont work. Application seems to think controler is connected because "head pointer" is disables but when I enter settings, under controler it shows "disconnected". When I take googles off and go back to android I can see controler is still paried in bluetooth setting and oculus controler settings. Phone is new with fresh android.
Has anyone saw similiar problem please ? Or is it just damaged controler I bought.
Thanks in advance

Hello All.
I'm quite new in this Tizen world. don't know if someone worked to make it work.
Is there any way to switch my paired GWA2 from Samsung phone, where it loads the SO with the plenty of apps and health options like ecg an bp, to iPhone, without wipe and loose all "Samsung Exclusive" options?
I know it is not possible to do it the regular way. I'm able to pair my watch with Samsung and change it to iPhone, but it didn't get anything from there, like notification and even connection with the Samsung watch app, exception by receiving calls, cause it is done by different bt connection.
Is the only option using the watch as an standalone device in such case?
You will loose the BP,ECG but there is a tutorial step by step how to install them back in your phone manual,if you are worried about your achivements and other STATS they are saved in your account (samsung one)so make sure you log in with the correct details
Thanks for answering @oache . However, this is exactly what im trying to avoid. Even disconnecting from bluetooth via shell, when I connect to the iphone, it shows connected through the bluetooth (both connections), but completely dead, no traffic at all and Galaxy watch app on iphone can't see the connected watch.
I bought a used Gear VR for cheap and was going to use my old S8 to run it. After much searching and checking I know I have followed the directions for initial setup correctly, but nothing I did caused the headset to install or activate the Oculus app. I at first thought maybe it had something to do with the phone, but using the iVRy installer from steam I was able to successfully install the Oculus for Gear VR app and pair the Gear VR remote control. Yet plugging in the phone to the headset does nothing. I tried fiddling with the apps (force stopping apps, reinstalling, etc...) and trying cleaning the phone connector, but I think a major clue is that with the phone in the headset and a power cable plugged into the aux type c connector on the headset it doesn't charge the phone... so I assume I'm just not getting a connection with the headset at all.
So I guess my question is (1) does anyone have a better theory and (2) does anyone have tips to repair this issue?
Update: I was able to try my S8 in another headset that was a year newer than the one I bought. It also was not recognized by the phone, so it does seem to be the phone that is the problem. I'll post what version of android and of the Oculus for Gear VR app I'm using a bit later when I can take the time. Just to have here as data points. Maybe it's the phones USB C port pins?
I have same problem, I have note 9 and gearvr sm-r325 and I can't connect
