how is the phone? - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

I have the Nexus 4 right now, & am looking at the mi 5 to upgrade. I have some questions about it:
1. How is the camera quality (vs the nexus 5x & oneplus 3)
2. Can I replace miui with stock android? and will everything still work? (I find the miui ugly)
Thanks

Phone is great! Very fast and compact design. Camera in my opinion is better. The 4 axis ois is fantastic.
There are a few cm13 roms and other variants that's as close to stock.

And how is the build quality? I read somewhere that the back glass scratches easily, & feels like its going to come off

Both the front and back glass are gorilla glass 4 protected, unless you use a very sharp knife it won't scratch so easily.

Since I am planning on buying it, I have found those problems so far
some people have problems with GPS
the phone is not durable for falls at all, you must buy a case
some experience weak wi-fi signal
it has heat problems
major problem since you are browsing XDA, no kernel source so far, just why in the world they don't release it, and how can google overlook this
don't forget every device has issues, especially budget phones, I think they are all not that important but the kernel source one is

[Q] LG G2 to Z1... Is it worth it?

First of all I know that most of you will prefer the Z1,,, since this is a Z1 forum. But I just would like some opinions n whether it's a good decision replacing the G2 with a Z1. I did search most of it, but still unclear due to a very mixed reaction.
The number one reason I am thinking about this is because I know devs will port the Z2 launcher and other goodies to the Z1 soon, and I love the
look of the Z2 interface. ( I would not be able to afford to buy one though)
I prefer the build quality of the Z1, but will probably miss the back keys of G2.
Is the camera all that great? Or even better does someone know if it's better than the G2? I heard very mixed reaction.
My wife got her G2 last month when I got my Z1s, they're completely different phones. The G2 has more customizations options for sure.
As far as camera performance I prefer the Z1. Sometimes her camera produces better pics but more often than not mine wins out. Also, the Z1 takes the pictures faster, seems to take forever from the time we hit the button until it takes the pic on the G2. The Z1 takes them super fast and has way more options. I love this camera.

The G2 is a great phone so I would stick with it. It's got a bigger and better screen than the Z1, too. I only went for the Z1 over the G2 because I need lots of storage (no SDcard on the LG) and I prefer a premium finish to glossy plastic. if those things are important to you, go for the switch.

I love my z1 but was looking at the htc one and g2 when I was choosing to buy my phone. Any of those are good solid phones..but I wouldn't replace one over the other if I had any of them. I'd just wait for the next generation..

I decided to make the jump and I have got to say the build quality is superior. As for Camera. It's what I expected, awful in low light, amazing in good light. speed is about the same and prefer Sony's skin.
I actually prefer the G2, I quite like the bigger screen, and the smaller bezels are really nice. It also seems to be a better point and shoot when I compare my dad's G2 and my Z1, and images turn out a lot less grainy. The only things I prefer on the Z1 is the premium feel and the microSD card slot, as well as glass screen protector, as the G2 is really lacking in good glass screen protectors. I also prefer the Xperia UI over LG's Touchwiz copy UI, however, I'd just flash an AOSP based ROM over it anyways, like I would if my Z1 had an unlocked bootloader.

I think pictures in good light look much better on the Z1, but low light G2 easily wins. And the Z1 takes pictures faster.
I am pretty confused how G2 Devs have managed to increase image quality with a MOD yet their are no mods for the Z1 that do.

Anyone Come from an Note 3?

Any one switch from a Note 3? I have been highly looking into getting the Z1, and my Note 3 just sold on Amazon (Wasnt expecting it too) So I need a new Phone Any Issues to be aware of besides the Viewing angles?

Nope... not a single one... and imo the viewing angles really aren't that bad... maybe i just got good panel but colors arent washing out on me... no matter what angle... its just that there must be a "problem" on every phone.
Btw lol my gaming rig has more performance than your server

I`m really thinking about buying one it seems like a great phone!
So Your Gaming Rig has Intel Xeon E5-2620 X4 Physical CPU`s? Right now the going price is like $400 a CPU
Or do you mean my Personal Computer?
if you consider viewing angle an important point, you better start looking at Xperia Z2 instead of Z1
things to watch out for.... the glass scratches easier than you thought, at least in my case
and Z1 still have that plastic anti shatter film on both sides, unlike Z2 which goes naked glass
you'll need a good tempered glass screen guard
Yes its the best phone ive touched !
And yes i was talking about your server no 4 physical cpus (would if could) but i have 2 Intel i7 4960X that costs about 1000 per one and they are oc'd to 4.5Ghz. so atleast same amount of speed... motherboard is EVGA SR-X 270-SE-W888-KR, videocards are Nvidia Titans x2 on SLI mode, 64Gb DDR3 ram, 2 240Gb SSDNow KC300s on RAID1 and some other stuff including self built liquid cooling etc. Case is Corsair Obsidian 900D
So yeah

I don't know. Maybe for the front facing speakers and the IPS display. Which is a big improvement imo because IPS display is just beautiful and since I like to watch movies a lot, the front facing speakers is what I prefer.

Yup, but its not so big of a deal to me, like i said, maybe i got good panel but my Z1 screen is really good... aand the speakers are bit quieter but i dont mind since i dont use them much... smartwatch handles notifications and basicly only thing i need speakers when im with friend and its really enough for that... For me, Z1 does fine, Best phone ive touched !

[Q] Would you guys recommend buying the LG G Flex?

Hi,
I'm looking for a new device, as my Note 1 looks like it's about to join the big charger in the sky.
I know the basics - large screen, good battery & processor, meh resolution etc. Judging form the specs and reviews I've read, it looks like a good fit for me.
What I'd like to know is if you'd recommend buying it for long term use (I'm not one to change phones every year), and if there are issues with the phone you think I should know about.
It's a great phablet. Fast, comfortable and bug free. Battery seems to last forerver. Feels solid yet slippery in the hand, and close to impossible to use one handed. You won't feel the difference made by the 720p resolution after a few hours. Color reproduction is great and the screen is sharp and bright.
Coming from the note 2, i see only 3 downsides In the flex.
1. The camera. Real slow to focus indoors, produces lots of noise in dark areas... Sometimes i cant determine where the focus point is. Perfect daylight and closeups though.
2. Lack of development. This phone is locked down tight, so if you love to flash like me, it's a disappointment.
3. No cases, no glass screen protectors. Almost. You can still find them around ebay and amazon, but not as much stuff a samsung would have.
On the bottom line this is a great mid-high range phone, and for the right price, and the right mind it will do.

I don't really care about the camera. The lack of development is a bummer. Might have been a deal breaker for me if it wasn't for Xposed.
Oh, one more thing - some users had an issue with ghosting or after images on the screen. Anyone had this problem? How widespread is it?

It really is a matter of luck... Some of the phones were bad from factory.. You have something like that, you'll get it replaced with your warrenty.
If you want to keep it long term and lack of updates (and also latest apps) will bug you then I suggest Nexus 6 over it. My dad has this phone and I have the nexus, dont get me wrong g flex is a nice phone but starting to fall back in technology and will likely not get updates for 2+ years

Quality feel (use of materials)

Rate this thread to express how you think the LG Nexus 5X feels in terms of quality. A higher rating indicates that it feels premium and high-quality (attention to detail is high, manufacturing defects don't exist, etc).
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
My Nexus 5X actually started making creaking sounds about a week after use. I know it's plastic, but there are plastic phones out there that don't do that. So, I'm not too keen on the build quality.
Would you guys say it feels better or worse than the original Nexus 5?
Very high quality, but the buttons are shallow

I would rate them the same. Solid plastic devices, but with clear signs of being built on a budget.
There's a bit of a gap between the back cover, and heat expansion as well as removing the (very tight at first) USB-C connector seems to increase the gap and potentially cause some creaks. However it is minor and rarely happens for me, so it's easily forgotten.
Hello, I had the Nexus 5x Black in hand yesterday and it is polucarbonate soft feel in hand, definetly better material than dhe Nexus 5 2013. I want to ask you guys? The white color its the same material as the black? Because the Nexus 5 2013 there was a diference in bulid materials....

Same matte plastic feeling with all 3 colours of the 5x according to online sources.
Not a huge fan of the back cover, but it grew on me with use. I think it feels great in the hand.
This feels waaaaay better than my S4. The plastic back on that was cheap af, cracked in a week. You could see where the pressure points from the corners of the battery were because it cracked there. Ofc I got the white and the cracks are now filled with dirt.
The back of the 5X feels sturdy and robust, I haven't had any creaking like others. I have an ice blue made in Oct 15

No I have not, the backing resists fingerprints, smudges, and discoloration.
Guys, totally different issue: if you look closely with your eye on the other end of the longer edge of your Nexus 5X (having your shorter edge vertically) - can you see the edge is perfectly straight or it's bent/curved in some areas, especially around buttons? I thought my new shiny N5X will be damn solid, but I believe it's a problem of how the housing is made.
Please confirm! Thanks!

The only way i alleviated the creaking was using a supcase, or i would have returned it myself.
just received mine on tuesday, and got to say the only thing that immediately stood out to me as being "cheep" feeling was the buttons. they are very mushy and dont have good tactile feedback. but overall the device feels great.
The reviews are wrong, this is really nice device. It's hard to believe that it costs $400 less than other phones.
I absolutely love how the back feels. I'm using the Quartz White version and since i'm very careful with it from being dirty, i ordered a DBrand skin (Black Leather for Back, Frame and Camera) from overseas.
The phone doesnt feel cheap to me. But I did put on a supcase for added protection. Gives it a great feel in hand, very durable.
I wish it has,
1) Dual stereo speaker,
2) Great buttons,
3 At least 3gb of Ram
4) 3000mAH battery at least
5) Amoled display
Well, it's my 2nd phone so I think it's no big deal.

No regrets at all. Just AOSP rom would be a lot better, which should arrive soon.
The device has a piss-poor camera. Guess that's the only thing I regret. Its so bad that some phones almost 2years old takes better photos.
This is because of the very small Omnivision sensors used on this device.
But I knew about this even before I bought the device and since I don't take a lot of photos on my phone, it doesn't bother me much.
The fact that the device is very fragile and doesn't have any premium cases available also bugs me a bit. I really wish there were some decent looking protective cases for this phone.

I've seen the Pelosi case online. The product images looked like the case didn't offer much in terms of protection, especially around the screen. Also the material seemed to be very light, possibly to keep the case slim. The case looks good and I was tempted to buy. I didn't because of these reasons.
But if you have the case and its good, please post photos in my thread. Link
I created that thread as there are very few good cases available for this device and if everyone could post photos of what case and screen protector they had on the device, it would help other buyers too.

I did, until I got the unlock approval. I immediately flashed the xiaomi.eu rom and (most) of my gripes were dealt with; being android auto not working and horrible background battery drain. I still hate the home screen icon backgrounds, the fact it wont rotate, and the stock dpi... but other than that I am happy, for now.
My only complaint is that the screen is too small for my liking. I've had several larger phones in the past and I really miss the extra screen real estate. It almost seems like the screen is too skinny and long. So webpages are still small but long.

Try 320dpi. I'm lovin it! 320 was the stock dpi on the Xperia Z Ultra I had a few years back. And it works great on the Mix too. I feel 320 should have been the default DPI on the Mix.

No issues mate! I'm on the EU ROM and I don't see any issues at 320. This should have been the stock DPI. I can confirm that everything works fine. No issues with icon or any UI elements. Stock apps and all the other usual apps work great as well. All good! You'll be able to see more info on the screen and I bet you'll love 320!
I was waiting for something like the Z Ultra to show up. And finally it did! If you had the Z Ultra, you may remember that camera wasn't Sony's priority. It was all about the experience. And Xiaomi has made that experience even better! The mix is just perfect!

I just tried 320DPI, oh man, I love it!!! It even fixed my News360 app that I love but would only show me 2 articles per screen on this phone and now shows 6!
The only downside is that top status bar with the clock and battery and such is pretty small. But that's certainly a good compromise as the reset of the phone looks normal now, all I did was bump the UI font size up from small to medium and it all looks great.
All of the icons appear to be working fine, but I use Nova Launcher, so maybe that why.
320 DPI is pretty much a standard DPI for android, and so I expect alot of apps are tuned for that DPI.
Thanks for the great suggestion! The phone looks like a normal phone now....
Received mine today. I thought I could get by without a case but no way. It's slippery! Luckily a case came with it.

The fact that the device is very fragile and doesn't have any premium cases available also bugs me a bit. I really wish there were some decent looking protective cases for this phone.

There are, just use eBay or AliExpress.
About the camera you can take better pictures with another camera app or just learn to hold still and focus correctly xD I can take n decent photos.
It was easier in my s7 edge but even so I knew from the beginning this camera was inferior.
Here you have some photos taken by the default camera app and being steady.
I would say it's the same type of quality of my old LG g3 if you learn how to use it ?

Those are some good clicks mate! Like I said, camera was not a priority for me when I bought this device. I usually don't use my phone cameras a lot and only for some occasional snaps.. I knew that this device had an inferior camera compared to the competition.
Most people usually depend on their phone's camera for random clicks like when your drunk friend is doing something funny at a party or when it appears as if your dog is smiling. Random events like these, when you may not have your dedicated camera at hand. That's when your phone's camera is handy. And for casual spur of the moment clicks like these, this phone's camera is quite unreliable. In most cases those moments you intended to capture would end up as a blurry or noisy mess.
Like you said, if you put enough effort, you may be able to get a few good shots like you just shared. But that was not my point as it defeats the purpose of a phone's camera.

Jeez, nothing wrong with those at all.
I agree as well. Took a few shots and pics look fine. From all the reviews, I was expecting worse.
Best phone I've ever owned.
iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5 -> HTC One -> Samsung S5 LTE-A -> Note 7 (pretty nice) -> Xiaomi Mi Mix.
This thing is a MONSTER. Fast as hell, best battery I've ever seen (better than the Note 7), humongous display, sexy as build quality, tons of RAM, tons of fast memory, fast charging, etc. I'm surprised this exists.
