Concept Marshmallow vs. AOSP Developer World - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm way out of the loop on this phone right now, it's my wife's. But she's been running the Concept Marshmallow Edition, and is currently on build mob30m.z1.3633-somc
It works ok overall, but we have a couple camera issues. Specifically, the video not recording and videos not playing back. A reboot fixes the issue for a short time, but then it creeps back up within a day.
Does any one know if the AOSP build available on developer.sonymobile.com is a better route? I can't imagine reverting her to Lollipop at this point, but I'd really like to solve the video issue for her if at all possible. Any one have any input? Thanks if you do!

Well if you would go with that route the problem would be the camera would not be good because there is no DRM fix and to install that you need to have an unlocked bootloader while for concept if I am not mistaken you don't need to and you do have DRM fixes, try reinstalling Concept to fix the camera issues

Preventing auto focus on video GE Stock

Hello guys,
Wondering if you could help me with a pretty unique problem. I've shot a bit of video with my One with some pretty impressive results, I'm really pleased with what I can get out of just a phone.
However I have one gripe, the auto focus seems to be always trying to correct itself. I don't mind if I have to lock in focus from beginning to the end of video, I just want to try and stop it in video.
Is there a specific ROM or an application that I could run to stop it from doing this? I'm currently running stock GE 4.3

No one? This is sort of a serious issue for video--we do not need aggressive auto focus in every single video.
I'm having the same issue... Any fixes?

[Bug] Snapchat/third-party camera apps choppy recording

Purchased a new P9 Plus the other day and installed both Snapchat and Instagram. Went to take a video in Snapchat and as soon as I started recording the recorded frame-rate dropped to ~10fps making for a nice slideshow.
Also noticed this occurred in Instagram so it is not isolated to just the one app. I must also point out as soon as the recording started it seemed to zoom in slightly, unsure whether this has to do with the lens crop-factor or what.
Original camera app works just fine without any choppiness in recording.
This leads me to believe that it's something wrong with the firmware and makes me curious as to whether there is a solution out there (as I use Snapchat on a daily basis and this purchase was meant to be an upgrade, not a downgrade.)
Current version: VIE-L09C706B102
EMUI: 4.1
So using even more third party apps I am relatively confident it is instead just a Snapchat and Instagram related issue as other camera apps on the store don't seem to exhibit the same symptoms.
Submitted a bug report to Snapchat in an attempt to get it fixed. However I'm still convinced with a tweak somewhere in the Kernel and a rebuild I could flash a version that solves the issue. Anyone have ideas about where to look?

FWIW, I recorded a Snapchat video and it come out perfect. No choppiness at all.

I also have a highspeed Class 10 microsd card that I use as the default storage. Not sure if that would make a difference.

Ah right yea see you're on a much newer firmware version than I am (FYI I don't have a microsd in my device atm). I'm stuck with B102 here in NZ which is what I think the issue is. You wouldn't happen to know an easy method of debranding my device and potentially swapping to the international/EU version would you?

I just got my phone a few days ago so I haven't done much in the way of researching how to root, but I know you can root it.

U should post this on P9 Plus forum, this is for P9.
Had the same problem, updated FW to EVA-L09C432B166, has up to Android Snapchat standards ever since (still kinda slow, but you know, some devs just don't like Android).
Do you guys have the same where it zooms in upon recording as well? I'm guessing this is because of some resolution change, but it's way too zoomed for my taste.

Camera stottering - New rom / kernel a solution?

Hello,
because i bought a new phone i gave my "old" Nexus 6 to my wife. Since a updated to Marshmallow i had problems with the camera. It stuttered while making a video. But i dont often used the camera, so i ignored it. My wife is Snapchat addicted and she can't make good videos with the front camera of the N6....it's like a slide show....the record is not smooth. I searched at the internet and a lot of people have the same problem since Adnroid Marchmallow ....
I flashed her CM 14, because i thought it might be a problem with the stock rom , but the problem remained. So my question is. Because i know i had not the problem at Android Lollipop. Is there anybody who had the same problem and solved it with flashing another rom? Or is it worth to try another kernel? I looked at the "rom forum" and found the "sky dragon 5.0 with a "new" kernel and probably i will try this. So my question is....is it a problem with the rom? is it a problem with the kernel? is it a problem with the hardware? What you expert think its the best way to fix the problem (i tried tips in the internet like diasble geodata at the photos or disable the battery safer for the camera app).
I hope you are able to understand my english. Otherwise i will explain it in other words.
Thank you very much!
Flash a factory image (will wipe the phone 100% but take it back to bone stock). If the camera issue is present on stock rom, stock kernel, with no modifications, then it's a hardware issue.
i have had problems with stuttering camera app before but it was fixed by resetting the phone. not really sure why after installing a new ROM you still facing this issue.
have you tried other camera apps? download a free one from the store and see its the same deal.
My first Nexus 6 had no issues whatsoever. When I had to RMA that one for the massive battery bulge issue, my second Nexus 6 had the camera stuttering issue. It would happen whether I was taking still shots or video. Obviously it was more noticeable on video, but it still made taking stills difficult. I took a video at the time to post on here to see if other people where having the same problem, but actually never got around to posting it...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k23njriKiDk
Anyway, I RMAed that phone for the camera issue but then the third N6 had the same issue. I decided to live with it though since (a) Motorola has a really frustrating return policy/procedure, and (b) since two different devices had it I didn't think there was any guarantee that an RMA would fix the problem.
Fortunately, I've noticed that lately (running Nougat now), the stutter has mostly gone away. I'd say that for still pictures it has gone away entirely. For videos, I think it is gone as long as you use the stock camera app. I've noticed that if you use other apps, like Instagram for example, my video still has issues. In that case though, it's more of a constant refocusing issue than a stutter issue.
So moral of the story is... for me at least, it seems to be ok on Nougat as long as you stick to the stock camera app.

Does Oreo or Pie bring significant performance changes from Nougat?

Basically, and I'll make this short so I don't ramble, if this is a side/wifi phone where all I need it for is gaming and music, does upgrading bring anything that people 'cant live without', or is staying with an older version that has had more time to be customized a better option? I'm on Pie right now, but it's one of those things I really can't tell without setting aside time to test/experiment and focus, which I haven't ;p

Compared to nougat, the custom rom status of Oreo and Pie is miles ahead and better.....yes, there are some bugs here and there but those are minors and won't hinder your day to day usage and not to mention that even some of those bugs are being fixed and will be ironed out in the next few months of update.....recently the camera issues has been rectified and by the next updates, the camera should work flawlessly without any crashes.....even GCAM is working perfectly on the rom.....try Pixel Experience if you want, updates normally come on a monthly basis and the latest camera build prop fix posted at Pg 60-62 fixes many camera crashes.....
The only bugs which are left are normally based on the rom and its sources and normally gets fixed in the next update
.
Yes,4k recording still now doesn't work in footej camera or in Gcam, but if you really need 4k recording, use the Filmic Pro camera, it will allow you to record at 4k with variable frame rates.
In terms of performance, there are some internal improvements but for day to day scenario it is more than enough, in short you\ll be able to play PUBG at low/medium settings at 30 fps ......
What we really need is a kernel developer who can make some good custom kernels which will help in performance improvements and increase overall stability and feature array across the board....
So, in short the custom rom status is better than ever for le 2, right now ..... and this is coming from a guy who was there from the beginning when CodeWorkz was developing the nougat rom for the device....
Well then, I guess Ill stick with Pie :0 Guess Im just used to windows, to where when 10 came out, you were able to upgrade for free from 7, and dx12 was supposedly ready to be supported, so i figured, get the new directx, get to make my OS legal, why not?
Hardly any games use dx12 still to this day. Compatibility with games and such was funky, especially with scaling. Audio software like Audacity had, and still has, bugs which arent there for win7. Hardware certificates had issues for quite a while (esp Asus hardware) so i couldnt us3 my network card.
Ive prolly gone back and forth like 4 times, until i decided to just stick with 10. So i figured there might be similar issues with a phone that wasnt planned to be updated with a new os to run better with an older version.
Hope that made sense ha

Worth buying the Xperia XZ2 in the late 2019?

I am interested in a buying a 2nd all-arounder phone that mostly ticks all key boxes and found out that the XZ2 is almost there.
As it will be my first Sony I need your experience with the device to decide to buying it or get a different one:
1) are there any serious issues that affect the device, maybe design issues or bad experiences with the device? Maybe display, speakers, or other hardware stuff to concern me?
2) I am interested in root-ability o this phone. Is I saw that there is some development. for this phone and since I am sort of experienced in Custom ROM stuff, I want to know if there are specific rooting issues? Are the valid options for un-bricking it, just in case. Is there a big amount of bricked phones?
3) how's sony with the updates for this device for official firmware updates?
4) is Google Camera functional after rooting?
5) is the phone performance still holding good in late 2019?
I appreciate your responses in any form or shape!

1-some devices are affected from bad production including mine, ghosting on LCD below room temperature, horizontal static electric lines appearing after rubbing the screen, speakers may get temporary damage for no reason (can be fixed by opening the sim tray and pulling that paper in there and waiting a little) or can get permanently damaged if you overdrive them with something like xLoud easily, if you dont want a super slippery 200g heavy 1.1cm thick glass brick look somewhere else (buttons are jiggly too)
2-custom roms have problems with audio and camera and it'll take some time to get fixed and at the end there's the possibility of it not being better than stock camera (also typical sony drm stuff will be lost after unlocking the bootloader)
3-device getting regular security patches and will be updated to android 10 in early 2020 (keep your bootloader locked if you want OTA)
4-no, gcam requires full camera2api and raw support which isnt there on stock
5-performance is good probably due to having close to stock android
this is my first xperia and I'd not recommend this phone to anybody unless you are crazy about what is sony doing with their sony open devices project like the guy above martin

I'm sorry to hear that you got a faulty unit.
Did you try to RMA it?
Because I never had such issues, except touch issues in Android 8, which got 90% fixed now (Sometimes while I super fast do swipes on the keyboard it may not recognize only a single swipe at the beginning of the writing).
Camera and Audio are work in progress on the custom roms based on sony open devices project.
SODP is an isolated sony employee team in the sony company + volunteers which need to implement everything by themselves without access to the stock source code (but with access to the closed source Qualcomm source code and documentations).
The camera doesn't degrade on unlock on your stock firmware, so you can freely continue using the stock firmware until the SODP camera reaches a equal or better quality.
(Since SODP supports the entire Camera2API with RAW and GCAM support to raise the quality it may become better than stock.)
And the performance is like stock on SODP.
My benchmark shows the same values like stock, too and you don't have bloat/stock apps preinstalled without the possibility to remove them without root.
PS: The SODP based custom roms are not affected by DRM, since they are a reimplementation of the hardware drivers, there isn't any usecase for DRM keys.
