Audio Quality

Is the LG O4X audio quality & volume through headphones really that bad? I've read GSMarena's review as they've now posted the audio part of the review. They said it possibly one of the worst devices they've tested
This will be a deal breaker for me. :-( what do you guys think?
Any previous GSII ownes in here that can provide input on personal opinions between the quality of the two?

Audio quality seems fine to me. GSMArena suspected they had a faulty unit, and said they would try another but I have yet to see an update to the review to reflect this.

I did see that but thought what is the chance of them receiving a faulty unit. Im currently using a Galaxy S II, and the audio quality via music player suits me. I reappy want the 4X as its a sexy beast, just wouldn't be able to cope with crap music quality.

The sound quality is pretty good on the 4x. I upgraded after breaking my milestone and I was also iffy on buying the 4x because of the gsm review... when I tested it out, it sorta felt like my entire phone became a speaker but it instantly became muffled when I covered the grill. Black magic is at work here lol

Oudio output is fine for me too, though not as good as the One X, a little louder would not be a bad thing, but overall as good as other smartphones in the segment.

It is, once again, fine. Satisfactory. I don't like in-ear headsets so I just use the ones that came with my milestone 2 years ago >_> I did try the headphones that were in the box though, they unlock some eq presets along with an option to manually tweak the levels. But plugging in any headphones will unlock that.

...as good as the other six smartphones I use, honestly. I always check music quality through my $500 akg closed headphones with quite a range of high quality files and the 4x sounds really fine, absolutely no problem here.

Just bought 4X to replace my 3.5" iPhone 4S, everything is fine except the sound quality which I must say is terrible compared with iPhone especially when using the built in speaker Maybe it's because the speaker is at the back of the phone

What if you set the O4X on its front so that the speaker grill is facing upwards? Will it be not as terrible? Is it really that bad compared to iPhone 4S?

Only the sound is louder, quality won't improve no matter where you face the speaker. Apart from Moto's Raxx, iphone's sound quality is excelent (from my own experiece).
I downloaded Poweramp as recmmended by local forum here to my 4X and the sound quality improves a little bit.

ok the sound of the built-in speaker is poor, but with headphones, for me, the sound is great. I don't think it's very exciting listen music with the speacker ......

Use the right headphones (i got a HTC set) and download the POWERAMP app...

hi guys, what about the call quality? is it loud n clear on speakers?

It's okay. I went through a few phone calls and I didn't experience any problems and have no complaints.
Although... has anyone else noticed that the voice for navigation is kinda quiet? I turned it up to max and drove a few suburbs over but I felt like it was a bit too gentle for a car environment.

Music over bluetooth, Motorola Motorokr s305 stereo headphone & headset works good. But dolby mobile setting stutters (to bad, cause I liked the sound). I now use the headphone amplifier setting. Also good, but not as loud as Dolby mobile.

Did anybody try the headphone out with high-end multidriver iems (Like Shure SE535, Phonak PF232 or Westone UM3x...)?
I'm an iPhone 4S user and the headphone out is almost perfect when listen thru my UM3x. Hence i was wondering if the 4X would be close in terms of noise floor, resolution and frequency response.

Im using Trple-fi 10, the sounds is good and even better than iPod touch which I used before.
btw, the app Im using is Poweramp and the music format is ALAC.

If the TF10 sounds good and you have your treble then output impedance of the LG must be quite low which is a great thing.
Could you fill me in about the noise floor (Noise that you can hear when you pause the music till the amp section shuts off).

Audio quality problem
I sometimes hear below average audio quality and I have to re-insert my head phone to get normal audio. Do any body facing this problem

Nexus 4 Sound quality = GOOD!

Got my Nexus 4 today, for those in the UK, i bought it on PAYG from o2 (£399)
Been running FLAC files through PowerAMP with my Sennheiser IE7's and they sound as good, if not better than my Cowon J3 DAP.
The Cowon J3 is a high-end DAP so i'm really impressed this phone can compete.
No yellow screen issues so far either, but i've not been benchmarking yet, gonna give it a week before i stress it out.

Yeah I was really surprised with the audio when I first plugged in my XB-1000's. I was expecting mediocre-bad audio quality that you typically get with phones but this seems really great. It's a really well rounded phone.

Wow, surprising, and good to hear. My GS2 really has dead lifeless sound through my ety's. I've taken to using my Pre for MP3's as it sounds infinitely better. I hope others post their impressions here as this may be one thing that pushes me over to this handset once it arrives here. Damn shame they only put max 16g in it if it really is a musical media player. Did supercurio weigh in on it yet?

Is it better than Galaxy Nexus? I got budget Sennheiser earphones so I doubt I'll hear much of a difference, but I'm thinking of getting a good pair.

Thats amazing! I am back on my gnexus after selling my sgs3 and the audio of the gnexus is terrible, I miss my sgs3. Hope my N4 arrives soon

I think the Nexus 4 has the same DAP as the GSIII (US). There is a noticeable sound difference although the amp volume is lower. It still sound much better than the GalaxyNexus + Sound Tweaks.

Actually now I've tried headphones, incredible on stock audio settings with Poweramp.
I have one issue, using the headphone jack with the line input on my car suggests the output is quite low (I used to have an Atrix, I had to turn that down one from full because it distorts!). I now have to turn my car up quite high to be able to hear anything. One thing I am appalled about is the fact the device doesn't seem to play nice with my car charger... i get serious background noise when that is plugged in (no issues on the Atrix)

i had an international SGS3 with the voodoo sound implementation from siyah, while the Nexus 4 does sound worse its not a whole lot worse.
the main differences fell with the bass they are not quite as deep and the highs are a bit rolled off compared to the SGS3 but not enough to cause an unpleasant listening experience; im sure with time perhaps with DSP manager it will be even closer.
but the bottom line is its not that much worse that id go back to the SGS3 and audio quality was my main concern with the keeping either handset (i've only just put the SGS3 on ebay )
for the comparisons i used Shure SE535;s IEM's

I don't have any Apple devices so I can't compare, but I can tell you it sounds really good with my older XB-500's too in comparison to my PC soundcard & especially previous phone (Xperia X10).
It's not head-thumpingly bassy and loud like you'd get with a proper amp, but there is still some good bass and just overall the sound is very pleasant. :good: I think you will be quite happy with how it sounds if you're not overly audiophilic.

cant speak for the iphone but!, i have a cowon S9 and as many know sound ALOT better than apple devices and the Nexus 4 is not far off of the Cowon S9 once again not quite as deep bass, or as crisp highs but pretty damn close. (for reference tho SGS3(int) with siyah kernal sounds the same as Cowon S9 + J3)

I noticed a much better audio then I had on my inspire through Bluetooth.
But then again my phone was 2 years old. So I was expecting as much.:laugh:

I was using an iPhone 4 while I waited for my nexus, I can say the nexus sounds a thousand times better.

Testing now through Sennheiser HD 280s. Sound quality is excellent to my ears. No hiss, pops. Much better than the GS2, the DAC on that is a pile. Volume could probably be a touch louder, I'm between two and three clicks down from max volume in Google Music for regular listening volume. That may explain the low volumes with car stereos. I'll compare with an iPhone 5 later.

Ah so it wasn't just me! I did notice a difference when switching from my gs2. I use the new xb600. It sounded like crap on my gs2.

loving the nexus 4 but music hooked up to car stereo sounds like crap compared to the iphone 4s/5.
Output level is extremely low on the nexus as well. What needs to be at a level 20 on my wifes iphone is like a 32 on the nexus 4. Ill experiment w/ the equalizer tonight but as it stands it doesnt compare. (sorry for being unbiased)

I thought the GS3 had better sound output. My n4 just doesnt get as loud. Is there anything I can do to fix this? btw i use google music

What style of headphone? In the ear, over the ear, noise cancelling?

Any set of Shure headphones.
The sound on the N7 isn't that great though. You can't make it sound good even with $500 heaphones. Trust me, I've tried. It's like trying to polish a turd.
That being said, Shure is my brand of choice when it comes to headphones and microphones.

I've been waiting for a thread like this. The zaag ear buds I have are great as and work well with my phone.

Yes audio on nexus is not best. Definite improvement over DAC on sgs2 but nothing compared to the note2. Currently using using klipsch s4a v2s. Was looking at some brainwavz today but stooped myself from pulling trigger. For many iem are the way to go for portability.

seriously though people need to know what you are looking for in headphones to recommend the best pair for you...

I strongly recommend the JVC HA-FX3X in ear monitors.
They retail at around the $80-100 mark, depending on where you buy them.
They're on Amazon frequently for $29.
Sound wise, they built very solidly, and have more bass than you could possibly want.
The sound quality is excellent out of box, but they warm up considerably better after burning them in.
I recommended these headphones to quite a few aquaintances so far, they took my advice and purchased them from Futureshop here in Canada and from Amazon for the $29 sale price, and are all simply blown away.
They are very strong and exceptionally clear for highs, mids and tons of bass. They easily compare to other headphones in the $100 range, and even besting most of the competition in that segment.
When purchased at $29, they're an easy winner BY FAR. I know people that even work out, bicycle with them, and do other activities since the cables are also on the thicker side and do not twist up and tangle easily. They also come with a carrying case to keep them safe when in transit, which also prevents them from tangling them up.

Great for any applications, games, movies, music.
I've also used them heavily for music like Mumford And Sons, bringing the accoustics to life. Most of the music I listen to with these headphones have been in super high quality lossless formats.
Before these headphones, I used to hate wearing earbuds or in ear monitors because they were simply uncomfortable. I can wear these headphones for HOURS and not be uncomfortable in the least. They also come with 3 different sizes of ear bud cushions.
These are definitely the BEST value for the money. Exceptional headphones at this cost.

As others have said, true audiophile quality just cannot be achieved through the normal headphone jack of the nexus 7. It is a great device, but just not meant for that type of thing.
That said, I have a pair of Sennheiser HD595's and they are pretty great. I can't afford the HD800's as suggested above. I also agree that Shure headphones really whip the llama's a$$. For ear buds, I own Bose IE2's because I found them for really cheap.
I also would like to second the comment about avoiding Beatz. Way way too much bass there. If you only listen to hip hop or drum and bass, I guess that might be okay. But I just think that excessive bass is very overrated in our popular culture today. Go with something that gives you good balanced sound that gives you the option of using an equalizer to up the bass. I would just find it terrible to not be able to ever turn the bass down.
Oh I also used to own AKG studio monitor headphones, and those were pretty awesome as well.

AKG's are great. I still have a set of studio monitors from the early 90's which are still going strong.
And yes, all this hype about bass is just silly. Headphones which have a lot of bass tend to sound crappy overall. You want a balanced sound, with the mids, bass and treble tweaked correctly... not just the bass turned up to 10. Headphones like that just like character. You should always go for sound quality rather than other things. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't know what good sound quality is. I've been using AKG and Shure for 20 years now so I'm kind of spoiled in that department.
I don't think you can find a better set of earphones than the Shure SE215's in that price range. They literally mop the floors with those dumb Beats headphones that cost $400.

If you want an amazing budget pair of studio reference monitor headphones....look up digitech pro monitor headphones...70 dollars shipped. They are rebranded Fischer audio fa-003 or brainwavs hm5. Great set...comes with an extra set of pads and a great carrying case. These are NOT beats....they do not have exaggerated bass but good clean firm fast bass. They are my closed headphones of choice. Open are my sennheiser hd-580 with hd 600 grills and iems are my jh13s. I have pretty high standards for headphone/iems and these will not disappoint anyone who appreciate music that doesnt want to sound like youre at the club

I have a pair of noise-cancelling headphones (PSB M4U 2) that I use for commuting that have an internal amplifier, and that seems to be a good usage mode for me. They allow the built-in amp to be used without noise cancelling, which seems to improve the sound quality from the Nexus 7 a lot without requiring me to carry an external box. Be careful though, because most ANC headphones have so-so audio, and you can still end up paying through the nose for them.

For best you might want to pick up a pair of Sennheiser Orpheus, they usually go for around $10,000.

if you need some low-cost one go get some coloud (knock) headphones. I was really shocked how good quality they are, and sound is really good for this price. Other adv is they're hard to break. I'm really satisfied. And yeah I know they're not audiophile headphones, but still good thing imo.

Included Samsung Earphones Quality?

Hi guys
I was just wondering if the included white earphones (with the mic + remote) that we got with out Note II are any good? I have been using other ones + the bluetooth Jaybird BlueBuds X, but I was wondering if the included ones are any good? I suppose I'm looking for the answer of whether they are any good for included earphones, and if they are any good in a more general term?
The reason I ask is because I have not used them or removed them from their packaging since I've had the phone (over 6 months) as I wanted to have them as new for when I eventually sell the phone. But curiosity has got the better of me but I'm wary of opening them in case they are awful.

They are better than Apple's old earbuds for sure, but can't beat the EarPods in terms of mids and lows. I'd say they're good for bundled earphones, but sound too weak to be good IEMs.

The problem with the stock Note 2 is sound level is too low and bundled earphones are no solution for it.

The problem with cheap earphones - low sensitivity. You need to drive them with a high output signal level, and when it's loud you also facing distortion. Do you want to try something good? Use UE 600vi (these ultimate ears, which i have reviewed in my signature link, now on sale on amazon for $59) - they have very high sensitivity and even at low volume level everything will be loud and clear, not to mention these are the most comfortable in-ear headphones I ever had, and also come with mic and controls where using JAYS or 3D MAVEN free apps can turn single function button into multi-click playback control.
Regarding OP question, I have blue buds X as well and you will laugh you arse off going from bbx to stock headphones. No comparison. Btw, only a few carriers included stock headphones with their Note 2, Verizon never included headphones so you will not loose much in the value of sale if you open these up to test them out Worry more about your screen, battery cover, and the area around micro-usb connector that gets warned out.

Thanks for your info mate, will give those a look. I'm on the lookout for good earphones with a working mic that I can use when not using the bluebuds. It's a shame they don't have 3 buttons but I can live with that if they're the best in their price range.
On a side note, curiosity got the better of me and I tried the stock ones. They were ok but yeah, as expected they weren't great.

The problem with headphones supporting apple controls - only function button will work, but not volume control. But that single function button will play/pause audio and video, will pick-up/hang-up call, and using JAYS or 3D MAVEN apps you can configure double-/triple-click for other functionality. I typically have double-click to skip next and triple-click to skip prev. Plus, those free apps allow you to set delay between clicks so there is no mistake (setting it longer will eliminate errors). For breaking headphones in, refer to my UE600vi review where I have a link to on-line white/pink-noise audio player loop. Hook up your headphones to laptop and let it play for 10hr, just don't put it on your ears It's the best way to break any headphones in, and with UE600vi it help with bass definition. Still not as deep as Klipsch S4A but, UE has it's own driver for mids/highs - it creates almost 3D soundstage. Of course, you can get more expensive $200, $300, $400, etc earphones from Klipsch, UE, Shure, Seinheiser and others, but for a budget price I found UE600vi to be the best. They also have regular UE600 without inline mic/control for the price, but if you interested, get the one with in-line remote/mic.

My Samsung pair has been breaking in for 6 years, and they've gone through the washing machine once!

I haven't rooted my N7100 yet but Samsung's update policy is pushing me to do it ASAP. There are really good ROMs that could replace the stock one.

They are actually quite good for OEMs. I like them MUCH better than most earphones in the $20 and $30 range. But nothing beats a premium earphone experience.

For me the quality of the original samsung earphone are really good.. I use, for hobby, piooner hdj2000 and the sound obviously is better, but is not bad for the original..

That's what I think too. For IEMs, you'll need to go past $50 to really make a difference. I personally prefer on-ear and over-ear sets over in-ears though.

They were $12 including shipping and blow away the included white Samsung earbuds (which I always thought were great till I tried Awei). Mic works perfectly for phone calls however the headset volume controls don't work, only the hang up button (skip songs etc). There are apps you can get to get around that issue.

Audio Quality on Nexus 6?

All I can say is the audio quality through the headphone jack, and speaker on the Note 4 is garbage! That does not make it a bad phone, because with all its other features, the Note 4 is awesome but for an avid audiophile like me, my phone needs a great DAC/ headphone jack. The iphone 6+ Does have fantastic audio quality, but I use android phones as my workhorse, and Ipad as my consumption device, so iPhone is out for me. I am REALLY hoping that since the Nexus 6 has the 2 front facing stereo speakers, that it is being pushed by a strong high quality DAC. I currently have the M8 , and the audio is quite nice, but I have always wanted a nexus device after owning the HTC Nexus 1 , and the Nexus 6 checks all the boxes for me personally. It just has to have great audio and battery life and I'm sold! Hopefully we can get some reviews of the big sexy nexus before pre ordering starts?

I will admit, I am no audiophile. Can you go into detail on what exactly you notice in a bad audio output?

Hiss at higher volumes. Crosstalk/ Interference. Lack of soundstage or depth in the audio. Or lack of volume and "punch" in bass. I'm no "hardcore audiophile" that will ONLY listen to FLAC/ High Res music, as I listen quite often to Play Music on the go and at work @ 320kbps track that are streamed to me. But when reviewing new music or at the house wanting to check out new tracks and just want to be taken in by the music, then I load up some 24-bit/192kHz files, Ah the beauty of Android!
I know I can get a dedicated music player that serves this need, and I have one (Still have my old Zune 120 but with the way digital music distribution being so awesomely convenient through Gplay Store/ Itunes, I just like having a device that can "do it all" if I can find one. The Nexus being pure Android, "supposedly" all day battery life" Amazing screen, with hopefully excellent audio performance and supports High res audio files, sounds like that perfect device for me... Crossing fingers.

I'm not sure if root is available for the note4 yet, but if it is, install V4A. It helps to a degree. The nexus 5 is not a great when it comes to audio, however, with V4A installed, it is bearable. I use UE900 CIEM.
Edit: I am also hoping the N6 will have a powerful audio chip.

How do you like the P7's? I bought the P5's years ago but admittedly they don't get much use. I have tried the P7's and while I'm not sure if their sound sig is for me, they were insanely comfortable.

If it helps, the new Moto G, a £150/$180 phone, comes with an excellent DAC. Its even more impressive given the price of the device.
I can only assume they'll implement the same solution as in the Moto X. Unfortunately I can't comment on that, but I'd assume it's at least equal or better than the Moto X.
Obviously it can't compare to any dedicated player though. I still regularly notice the huge difference between my Note 2/3 Z3 experience and my old ipod touch 3rd gen. iPod destroys everything still.

Yeah those UE900's are some mighty fine phones my friend! But yeah I just want superb audio out of the box without tweaking. I know I can get it if I go back to apple for a phone, but I use iPad, so to me having an iPhone with its boring software when I already have an iPad that I use for consumption/work just seems like unnecessary overkill. As I use Android as my workhorse/EDC device. I have the HTC One M8 right now, and its close to what I want, but I don't particularly care for the software, except Blinkfeed, and I loath the camera. Headphone audio is damn good only because it is the loudest phone on the market right now due to the DAC having to push the BoomSound speakers and also pushing that same power to the headphone jack. But louder is not always better. The iphone 6 Plus's audio quality is quite a bit better, but not as loud, or "punchy". I hope its not too much to expect excellent audio quality with the way Googs is going away from the decently priced cutting corners Nexus devices to the absolute best Android has to offer Android device, which is what the N6 is sounding like they are marketing it has.

I know right.. I think Apple's audio superiority comes from the fact that they use a totally separate processing unit, independent of the processor for Audio processing. Where as Android phones generally use qualcomm's SOC and they dont have there own dedicated DAC. I may be mistaken on some of that lingo, but I think its close enough.

I am a M-100 user as well, hell year brother!
As for audio quality, personally I never use something as spread out as a Cellphone/Smartphone for quality music listening. Most of the time they are not equipped with the proper magic for good audio compared to PMP's and other quality audio sources. That is why I still carry around a PMP for most of my music listening (Better HW for sound, Storage all for Music, Separate battery for Music).
I know it's almost archaic to still have a PMP and a SmartPhone since the latter can technically do both, but if you want the best audio quality it's best to get a PMP for your audiophile needs. As for the N6, its up in the air. But I usually would not bet my wallet that it would make a quality music player. It might be good for some music here and there but as a whole with pro cans it just might not be enough to get the most out of them.

To me the original Moto X audio quality through headphones was great. I ordered a Nexus 5 trying to decide which one to keep and ended up sending the Nexus back. One of the reasons was the audio wasn't as good as the X. I HOPE the N6 will be just as good. Motorola hasn't let me down yet.

I wonder if the N6 will be able to play FLAC lossless files. I really would like to hear my music in it's purist form. I have tried looking on Moto's and Google's spec websites and there is nothing about the audio part of the device....

I am fairly sure FLAC files are supported by the current version of android. I just flashed a completely stock rom, no root on my N5 and I am able to play FLAC on it using Shuttle+.

Power amp pro is worth the purchase. It made my N3 sound soooo much better. Out of the speaker, headphones, and aux out for playing music. Also ViperFX and Volume+ were good at tweaking your sound.

There are 2 main improvement in android L for sound: low latency and usb-enabled headphones. I'm not an audiophile myself but I guess for startes those two should make a difference.
That being said, unfortunatly, headphones quality output is something hard to tell without specific reviews.

Funny you talk about Apple's "audio superiority" when their headphone jacks across iPad, PowerBook/MacBook, iPhone, and iPod lines have been poorly grounded for years.
