Hi, I installed CM 12.1 and still want the Books app, etc that comes on stock firmware. Is there an upload of this somewhere?

Most native FireOS apps have variants available in the Google Play store. Search for "Amazon". Be aware Amazon Underground (legit app) is needed for access to Prime Video. Google banned it from their app store; nothing like a little competition to whip up the book burners.
These aren't as full-featured though.

Many are, just arranged differently. In general native FireOS apps not not compatible with generic Android as they leverage features in the Amazon framework. Of course you can always return to FireOS if you prefer the native presentation.

Ever since I got my 8.9 Galaxy tab I've noticed issues with the Google Play store. Things like the HBO Go app not being available for it, but if you were to go behind the Google Play and manual install the Kindle fire's version it would work beautifully. I've ran into other apps that are not available for me, but are for similar devices. Now I'm noticing google is offering magazines, but they are only for 7 & 10 inch devices. Which makes no sense to me since you can buy a whole range of monitors for your computer and that doesn't seem to affect what your doing on it.
I guess I'm used to a world where to run an app you only need to have the correct OS and hardware to run it.
Why does android applications seem more concerned with brand name of your device and the screen size?
magazines
Looks like just after my post they updated my Google Play to allow for the purchases of magazines. It still seems that there are issues with the Android Market when it comes to compatibility that don't truly reflect if your device is compatible or not.

Google Play has been like this for a long time. Developers may wish on allow their app on confirmed working devices and will place restrictions on who can download it. While this helps keep their ratings higher from incompatible users hating their app. It leaves less popular devices out in the cold regardless of compatibility issues. But its why we have apk files and friendly xda members to get them for us
Hbo go updated their app it works now

I was looking to buy AVIA media player for using with my chromecast. Since, I had a few credits left in amazon app store that i can use for in-app $3 purchase, i was thinking of getting avia from amazon app store.
But........
Current Version of avia at amazon appstore: 7.0.27433
Current Version of avia at goggle play store: 7.0.27477 (updated on dec 26th)
So had a few queries...
Is avia's app on amazon meant more for kindle fire tablets and hence not suitable for android tablets? Or is it just outdated version available on amazon?

It works the same (have it on both G2 and Note 10.1 tablet), just the Amazon store version gets updated behind the Playstore version. I have Avia from amazon appstore and it still has issues...

Yes, generally speaking apps on Amazon App Store get updates later than Google Play. I don't know if Amazon has a slower approval process or what, but it has been the case for a number of apps I've looked at.
So, Google Play is my preferred app store, especially since the local Costco is selling 3-packs of $20 Google Play cards for $54 or $55.
However, if your device that doesn't have access to Google Play, or you can't get a Google Wallet, then your options are limited.
...and I love Amazon's free app of the day.
Functionality-wise, as SKyRocKeting727 said, they are meant to be the same. I have the Amazon Avia installed on my daughter's tablet as it doesn't have Play Store yet.
Amazon is giving $5 credit to be used in app store. So you can get Avia or Plex for free. This promotion ends tomorrow. The credit will be available until March, 2014.

Note that in addition to using the newest App Store version, you need to download an app that is not already in your account. Uninstalling something you already have and downloading it again does NOT count.
You should see a pop-up in the App Store that tells you that you qualified for the $5 credit.

Sorry for continuing off topic but I just tried this in the UK and what was my prize? A whole £1 credit to spend on an Amazon MP3. Bah I can't even remember the last time I used an MP3. Clearly a US only offer FYI.

Yes, it needs to be a new addition to your account, added from the most-current (7.5x) App Store version. Updates and reinstalls do not qualify.
Thanks!

I actually have access to both amazon and google play stores... but wanted to use the $5 promotion from amazon..
So the avia downloaded from amazon shows up as update required in google play store. When u click update on play store, it gives an invalid license error...
But good to know its the same app on both stores.

I noticed today that I wasn't receiving an update notification from amazon appstore that avia was able to update, it didn't even show an update available within the appstore itself. Yet, the version of Avia I had installed was older than the one that the store said was available. So in order to update to the newest version, I had to uninstall and reinstall from amzn. Just wish I would have bought it from playstore instead.
On another note, has anyone else gotten Avia stuck in the notification bar? It's persistent and can't be removed unless I restart my phone. It can't be swiped away like all other notifications, even after force closing the app. It happens when I try to click on my media server that is hooked to my router. (I've included a screenshot showing what I'm talking about)

Amazon's update notifications are a bit odd... I turned them off because all it really loved to tell me was that I had new apps to install. Yes Amazon, I wish I could install all 875 apps (Free App of the Day - it's not my fault!)...
Anyway, the way you're meant to update an Amazon Appstore app is:
Launch Amazon Appstore
Tap the Amazon Appstore title to get the menu (if this doesn't work you need to update Amazon Appstore itself, which usually takes two passes - first for notification to download, second to actually apply the update after Appstore is killed)
Tap My Apps
Tap Updates
Choose app to update. If the app doesn't show up, tap the refresh circle button at the upper right and wait...
Uninstalling and reinstalling also works, and arguably may be faster, depending...
I have never seen that weird stuck notification you have there.

Same here. Other Amazon apps show update but not Avia. Maybe it's because of in app purchase. I only found out about an update through this forum.
As for stuck Avia notification, l found that only happens when Avia can't play a file and gets an error when casting to Chromecast. The solution is to play a compatible file to Chromecast. Then pause it. Now remove from notification by hitting x.

Ain't that a PITA, you would think that when the app is closed out of recent apps it would remove the notification. At least that is an easier work around than a full reboot. Thanks
Amazon Appstore showed me an Avia update where it's supposed to be (My Apps > Updates), but I had to refresh before it showed up.

Amazon is behind on many apps. The game Magic 2014 had some installation problems on my Nexus 7 from Play Store but worked on Amazon so I went and did my in-app purchases there. Unfortunately now, Play Store has version 1.4.0 and Amazon has had 1.3.0 for many weeks.

This seems to be a general theme for Amazon Appstore vs Google Play. Not sure why Amazon is slower. Maybe more bureaucracy?

Perhaps. I know that the actual APK file in Amazon has some changes to include their DRM.
Or maybe devs think of Amazon as an afterthought and are lazy in submitting the apps.
I know you can download the Amazon Underground app no problem, and i can even get a version of the app store from Apkmirror, but the one that came with the tablet was far superior. (it has a dark background with tabs up top)
I tried taking the apk from the stock OS and installing it back manually, but it just throws up an error.
Obviously its not as simple as that, so i was just wondering if anyone had any other ideas? or if its even possible?
Thanks
As the Stock Amazon App Store is so integrated into the Fire OS what you are asking for is highly unlikely. Which then begs the question, if it is important to you why not just root the tablet instead of switching to CM 12.1? Most of us switch to get rid of the ties to Amazon.

Yeah i thought as much. I was just trying to get the best of both worlds!
What you've suggested is what i was going to do as an alternate.

I am in a same boat, probably.
I just want a amazon vod, w/o the rest of the amazon eco-system. So Custom ROM + Amazon AppStore is not an option?

custom rom + Amazon Appstore or any other amazon, or non amazon app should work just fine.
Amazon offers amazon underground for android. It is an app that you can find with a quick google search and provides apps you have purchased from amazon as well as a download for the amazon instant video app.

My apologies; somehow I missed that.
I did the nuke-it-and-make-it-usable upgrade. This is my first, so please forgive me if I don't use the correct terminology. I used FlashFire and uploaded SlimRom, SuperSu, and mini-gapps. It seems most of the apps I try to install says its not compatible with my device. Some apps I know are supposed to be there, don't show up in a search. Also, it kinda leans like it's a phone instead of a tablet. This may be normal, not sure there. Someone smarter than me, feel free to chime in. Am I doing something wrong, or did I miss a step? I used the tool from RootJunky. They gave this forum a lot of props and said you guys are the go-to peeps. I believe I got my files from the mirrors here. Amazon Fire 7", 5.1.1, Thanks in advance...
You pretty much would have to install the APK for each app that you cannot download from the Google Play store, part of the reasoning behind this is because Amazon Fire isn't officially supported by the Google Play Store, thus some apps will be unistallable via the app store.
You can download the APKs here: https://apkpure.com/app?hl=en
All the APKs should work. Just one thing to note would be that in the future, you'd have to reinstall the APK whenever a new update arrives for your app.
Best of luck!

So, in the background its still an Amazon Fire? I guess I just assumed by doing the new ROM, it would get rid of everything Amazon. That's what I get for assuming . Thanks!!
Great question and thanks for the answer. This may not be related to the "505 error" but I noticed with apps like "Open Camera" that it says the device is not compatible, and now I know why!

Yeah, I had the same problem, particularly with "Google Play." Sadly, my local news channel app is not available there, but a lot of other apps I was having problems with were.
I'm looking for an inexpensive tablet to run the Tacx Cycling App available through the Google Play Store. It appears that one can download the Google Play store to the basic 2015 Amazon Fire 7 but I'm wondering if having done so that I could actually get the Tacx Cycling App to function correctly with the Fire 7.
The Tacx Cycling app mentions:
Works with Android 4.3+
Connecting to Bluetooth devices requires Bluetooth 4.0 support on your tablet.
I'm hoping that Fire 5.XXXX is Android like enough to work with the app but working from a limited knowledge of the topic.
Thanks for any educated thoughts on the topic.

Yes. FireOS is essentially heavily skinned Android. Unless the app relies on Google Play Services you can run the app on FireOS.
If your OS version is <5.3.2, however, there are custom ROMs that give you stock Android goodness (AICP and Fire Nexus, CM12.1 is there but discontinued), and you can run any Play Store app.

Thanks Negusp,
For the current $39 selling price, it makes for an attractive computer to use specifically for this purpose. Bike computers cost nearly 10 X as much and won't control the trainer as well.
Cheers,
