Galaxy S Unlock Not Working on CM 12.1 - Galaxy S III Mini Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried unsuccessfully to unlock my wife's GT-i8190 using Galaxy S Unlock. It fails on step 1 backing up the EFS file and therefore won't progress any further. Is this because of the type of file encryption? Will I have to revert to a stock from?
I really don't want to pay to have this phone unlocked purely down to principle. T-Mobile have already extorted enough money out of me. The phone's rooted. Can I use Odin to root it?
I've just migrated to Three who now unlock their phones for free. This phone unlocking industry has to stop because it's a racket!

I also had a simlock on my Galaxy S2 earlier, I also tried various unlock apps, but no one worked. I finally somehow got rid of it via flashing Cyanogenmod. I don't know what exactly did it, but one guess is that it was removed at wiping the /system partition. Perhaps give it a try. Go to recovery, wipe /system, /data, /cache, flash ROM and Gapps and reboot. Consider making a backup which you can reflash via recovery if simlock is still there. Really hope this helps somehow.

[Q] Is temp root possible for a stock Vivid with ICS update?

I've been searching this forum without finding an answer to this question. I know that older temporary root methods exist, such as this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1341162
However, I want to be sure something like that will work on a stock ICS vivid. The phone is not mine, it's my friends, therefore I don't want to go the unlock bootloader/perm root route if I can avoid it. I could run titanium and save whatever data she wants to save if a temp root without unlocked bootloader method out there exists for a stock ICS vivid. Does anyone have any more information? Thanks in advance!

To be very honest, temp root is not really viable for backup either. You'll have to reroot if you want to restore data, etc.
Honestly, what I would suggest is that you just unlock bootloader and permaroot. If you are paranoid about the whole "bootloader-unlocked warranty-in-the-toilet" deal, just know that using an RUU reflashes the bootloader back to *LOCKED* state, not just *RE-LOCKED* state.

I'm someone who usually perm roots everything I can ge my hands on, but it is not my device. I'm not worried about the warranty, but my friend would rather not lose her data if this can be avoided (its more for peace of mind than anything). If I don't have to bootloader unlock, I rather wouldn't.
If I did back up, what would stop me from temp rooting again to restore?
I have been rooting android devices and dealing with custom roms and recoveries since the G1, so I know the benefits of permanent root access, but I know it isn't for everyone and I'm not going to do it for my friend right away if it can be avoided.
So does the temp root method work for ICS?? I've had my phone for a while and I don't wanna lose data on all my apps again >< (happened a lot when I had the Play)

[Q] Cricket S5

Hello all,
I managed to grab a Cricket-branded Galaxy S5. I decided this was the best area to post and ask questions because I believe this phone is locked down the exact same as the AT&T one (and might even be 1:1 other than software and the logo on the back), plus the fact that AT&T owns Cricket.
Currently, I only have the device rooted using TowelRoot.
I want to install SafeStrap, but wasn't sure if it would go smoothly, and I don't have an image to use with ODIN if I mess things up.
Can anyone suggest how to best create a stock image, or provide links/info to a stock ROM for this phone on Cricket?
Model: Samsung SM-G900AZ
Android version: 4.4.2
Baseband: G900AZTUU1ANE7
Kernel: 3.4.0-1732610 [May 29]
Build: KOT49H.G900AZTUU1ANE7
I would like to back it up, install SafeStrap, and try out some custom ROMs (I know Bootloader is locked, so I'd be limited in that regards), or possibly install Xposed to tweak some device behavior.
Can someone please advise?
Thanks.
Install safestrap, the worst that can happen is it may say installed but when you try to reboot to recovery, it will just reboot like normal and its as if the installation didn't actually 'stick'.
That's what happened to me...
After uninstalling the safeatrap installer and re-installing the app, then re-running the app, it said that safestrap was successfully installed, and this time upon tapping 'reboot to SS recovery' it actually worked.
You definitely do not need all the trouble of making a backup right now.. Just install ss and then make a full backup as usual.
Ps we have the same phone
Recently bought a s5 cricket, and what I have rooted for odin using the method cf-root, now I want to change the recovery to philz and change the kernel by one a bit more efficient and thrifty, and read about the Ss but not sure which version should I use because I can not find any for my team, I would assert that this circulating ND3 or that could use?
This is my phone

I hate to tell you that will be impossible..
Unless soneone can correct me, i am 99% sure our boooader is locked and will remain as such.
So, safeatrap is your only option for recovery/flashing, and in addition you will be limited to flashing tw-based Roms. Custom kernels are not an option unless /until the bootloader is unlocked.
Sorry to be the Bearer of bad news

I understand, however I wonder what version of SS I use to at least make a backup of my current rom and to test some custom rooms? the truth is that I feel bound hand and buy the tlf a good price and would like to customize much as my S3, but hey I'll have to resign myself to use it well and lighten the version that brings factory.
Edit : in case anyone wasn't sure here is the link to safestrap http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2794087
Hi, I'm kind of new to this, but I have a Cricket S5, and have some quick questions regarding rooting.
1. Is there anyway to fully unroot the cricket phone after rooting it with towelroot? (unvoid the warranty)
2. Will the bootloader ever be unlocked, so that I can flash custom roms?
Thanks for any help!

1. Yes, theres an unroot option in SuperSU that ive suggested to be used or you can reflash with odin, there are guides in the general forum if you check there
2. Will it ever be unlocked? Most likely not. Can it be unlocked? Yes, but unless something pops up it would have to be by getting the decryption key.

The bootloader is unlocked. From the beginning, unlocked. No need to decrypt anything or get a key or any of that hassle.
Yes, you can fully unroot if you choose

How to Unlock/Root Your Galaxy SM-G920T 5.1.1 without Tripping the Knox

Hello Everyone,
Today we'll be unlocking the Samsung Galaxy SM-G920T 5.1.1 using the Z3X Samsung Tool or Octopus Box Samsung, which both required you to root your Galaxy S6 SM-G920T. I will guide throughout the steps to root your phone without tripping the knox counter, which will allow us to use one of the programs above. We will use the (sboot.bin) which allows their service centers to do flashing and repairs to the device without tripping the Knox counter. The modified bootloader also disables write protection on the device. Once you are done rooting and unlocking the Galaxy S6 SM-G920T, we will restore the official firmware 5.1.1. Don't worry, your phone is unlock permanently regardless of the times you restore the phone.
The steps to root your Samsung Galaxy SM-G920T 5.1.1
1. Install Samsung USB Drivers
2. Put the phone in download mode by: Power phone off then press and hold Volume down, home and power keys at same time until you see warning screen then let go and hit volume up one time.
3. Plug phone in and wait for drivers to install if necessary.
4. Download Odin
5. Download sboot.bin for Galaxy S6
6. Open odin and then you should now see phone’s modem port highlighted in blue.
7. Click on BL tab and select the correct sboot.bin that you downloaded above. Then click start.
8. When phone comes back on, power it off again and put into download mode.
9. Download UniBase_BOG8_v2
10. Open odin again and this time select AP tab and select UniBase_BOG_V2 file and click start.
11. You're Done!!!
When the phone turn on, it will be rooted. To verify that knox has not been tripped go back to download mode and it should still say KNOX WARRANTY: 0 (0X0000). Now you can go ahead and unlock your Samsung Galaxy SM-G920T 5.1.1 using the Z3X Samsung Tool or Octopus Box Samsung. The sboot.bin isn’t playing very well, causing issues with Calls and Fingerprint sensor, but it is only for the meantime until you restore your phone back to the stock firmware.
Restoring your Samsung Galaxy SM-G920T to the stock firmware 5.1.1
1. Download the SM-G920T stock firmware
2. Open and extract the firmware file, then you should get the a file in .tar.md5 format.
3. Put the phone in download mode by: Power phone off then press and hold Volume down, home and power keys at same time until you see warning screen then let go and hit volume up one time.
4. Open odin and then you should now see phone’s modem port highlighted in blue.
5. Click the AP button tab and select G920TUVU2COF6_G920TTMB2COF6_G920TUVU2COF6_HOME.tar.md5
6. Make sure Re-partition checkbox is NOT selected, under the Options tab. Click start and wait for it to finish completely.
7. Enjoy!!! The G920TUVU2COF6 Android 5.1.1 firmware on your Galaxy SM-G920T.
I hope this guide helps everyone who wants to unlock their Samsung Galaxy SM-G920T, but needs their phone rooted first temporarily.

I'm sure it works on the G920TUVU2COF8 build, but I'm not 100% sure. If anything, you can always go restore your phone through odin.
Any chance we could get links to the files you reference? Thank you in advance.

I can't post the file links here, I would recommend you to use the search engine such as: Google, Bing, Yahoo and others to find the files you need. The files will be in the first two pages of the search engines.
Anyone with some credibility willing to try this? Or have tried it... No offense but the two people that posted have a combined 7 posts...

Yeah, I'm familiar with Google and the like. I just thought it may make things easier on people if there were links to the files since this was put together as a guide of sorts.
I ended up using the guide that noodlev1 posted since it came up frequently in the search for the needed files. I tried to post it earlier but I'm not cool enough to post links yet. I can confirm that I was able to root a bone stock sm-g920t without tripping knox.
As far as the sim unlock goes, still not able to successfully keep the sim unlock after a factory reset.

I honestly forget which baseband I was on. I spent all day flashing different builds to try to get the sim unlock to stick. I'm currently on COF9 on a metro pcs rom for the sm-g920t1 in hopes that I can receive a working unlock code. (Metro PCS rom is the only way to enter an unlock code apparently.)

Root and flash Custom Rom without PC

Hi,
I have an unbranded and unlocked nexus 6. I wanted to root and install twrp so I can begin flashing custom roms... Only problem is, I don't have a pc at home to ADB flash twrp, etc.... Is there any method to flash custom rom without having a machine at home? I have absolutely no need for a pc at home, until this precise moment when I get a new phone and I want to start flashing, lol. Im gonna assuming the answer is NO, im thinking there may be some OTG method with files from a thumb drive, but I'll wait to hear from the experts. Thanks in advance.
I have been wondering that very question myself. I really doubt it's possible, but since I have had my N6 and LG G Pad, I don't ever use my antique Pentium 4 Dell PC hardly at all.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
It's totally possible but highly recommended against. There is an app to root, which then you use flashify to flash recovery but if you ever have a problem, you won't be able to fix it because you need a PC to get a rom back on your phone if you accidentally wipe the os or do some other mischief that prevents you booting, you wont be able.to unlock your bootloader which means you won't be able.to.flash stock or return for warranty purposes either, so as.much as you want to do this, it would really put you in an awful position and you'd be screwed if something goes wrong, which the chances are, it will.

I have no issues with the first potential problem you mentioned (having to get a rom back on phone using a pc) because I have a backup phone, plus if it gets to that stage, I can use a friends computer if I really need to. But the last comment you made about the chances of an error occurring and saying that it most likely will and i'll be unable to get it back to stock scares me. Is this method really that unreliable? I will read up on it more, and search through the forums.
If you can provide details of the app to root, that would be great. Also, how reliable is the app to root alone by itself? Minus the flashify portion...

It's not the method that's unreliable the app "kingroot" (I believe it is called) works fine. The issues occur with everything and anything else root users do. Flashing a rom, a mod, wiping the os via recovery etc.
Then if anything hardware goes wrong, returning the device for repair under warranty will likely be rejected if its not stock.

I'm not going to commit to an answer there
One thing I will say though, you'll never be able to update with an OTA, so if you're going to root, have a custom recovery,. Allow.oem unlock and have an unlocked bootloader.
Best bet is to do the proper.routing and unlocking using your friends of as a one off. You can then safely.maintain the phone without a pc and use the pc in am emergency. Not unlocking the bootloader from the beginning is.asking.for.trouble

k, I already used the kingroot method and verified using root checker. Installed adaway and everything seems to work perfectly (so far anyway). Uninstalling Kingroot unroots the phone from my quick series of test that I've run so OTA updates doesn't seem like it'll be a problem.
I agree though, if I really want to do any rom flashing, ill just unlock, root, and flash using "proper methods".
Appreciate all your help man.

Uninstalling Kingroot removes root but does not uninstall all modified files. Will show as modified and thus no OTA updates. Another thread on same thing here somewhere. Have to flash system back to stock with PC for any updates.

It's also not safe to update without bootloader unlocked anyway. Too many reported bootloops with OTA.

Exactly this. All root methods edit.existing files but do not restore them after unroot. So the system is modified. We're.100% certain there will be no OTA.
Unlock the bootloader and do it properly.

Can you provide a screenshot with another phone or type the code. First rule is don't panic. Also you might be to sideload a zip of Android n to boot into Android.

Does the phone boot after it gives you the corrupt message? All that means is the phone detected the /system was modified which in a lot of rooting methods is commonplace. Also there's a guide around somewhere about how to flash factory images which is more indepth than I'd be willing to type up right now.
ignore the message that you see, its googles way of scaring you. that's all that is.

But with the bootloader being locked (I assume it is) him rooting it that specific way didn't corrupt it just sent trips of the bootloader police. Security checks fail.
